Cancer survivor Julie Roark will be walking the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Denham Springs High School on April 17, in part for her family, including her son and daughter, 15 and 16, who both celebrated a birthday April 4. Roark was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in 2011, and started a Relay for Life team consisting of her significant support network soon after. “I have a big family, she said, estimating at least 30 people —

probably more — who will be making laps around the DSHS track from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. April 17. She is fighting lymphoma for the third time. “I just got another PET scan to see if the hot spot they found has grown, she said. She will get her results the Thursday before the race. “It’s upsetting, especially after you’ve already been through treatment twice, but there are so many people who are in so much worse shape than me, she said. She walks for those people, too. She said she had a great sup-

port system and phenomenal friends who chipped in to buy her a wig when she lost her hair after chemotherapy. “Wigs are expensive. What I love about Relay is that it comes back to the Livingston community to pay for things like wigs, and rides to doctor’s appointments,â€? she said. She walks because she can. Because, despite the uncertainty she’s living with at the moment, she feels good. “For me, personally, during the time I was going through treatment, I obviously felt reäSee RELAY, page 2G

Blue Run aims to raise awareness of abuse prevention BY C.J. FUTCH

cfutch@theadvocate.com April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, said Ginger Cangelosi, and Child Advocacy Services hopes to raise both awareness and funds with the fifth annual

Blue Run, scheduled for 7 a.m. April 11 at Gonzales City Hall, 120 S. Irma Blvd. The event includes a one-mile Fun Run and a 5K race, both starting at City Hall, Cangelosi said, and proceeds will benefit programs provided by Child

Advocacy Services, a nonprofit agency that supports the Court Appointed Special Advocates program, Children’s Advocacy Center, along with clinical services and prevention education for children and families in 10 Southeast Louisiana parishes

including Ascension, Assumption, East and West Feliciana, Livingston, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John, and Tangipahoa parishes. “The first year, the run was in Hammond, and we have people participating from all over,

Cangelosi said. “We had lots of requests to move it to Ascension, because it’s more centrally located (to the service area), so we did, and we’ve had it in Gonzales ever since.â€? äSee BLUE RUN, page 4G

Town should consider the missing deposits a theft of funds unless proven otherwise,” the audit states. Additionally, each of the town’s utility funds had a deficit at the end of 2014. Water funds were $55,883 in the red, and sewer $20,988 short, according to the audit. “The user fees are not adequate for the expenses of operating the systems,” auditors wrote, saying the town should consider reducing spending or increasing utility rates.

Part of the problem is the city charges a flat rate for those utilities rather than a usage rate. The town also is not in compliance with its own ordinance because it bills customers differently based on whether they live within the town limits, but the boundaries “are difficult to interpret and some customers’ parcels are dissected by the municipal city limit boundaries,” auditors wrote. There is some good news, though. According to the au-

Prosecutor Malnar honored for DWI work Advocate staff report Assistant District Attorney Le’Anne Malnar received the DWI Prosecutor of the Year Award on March 24 from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission during a Baton Rouge ceremony, held by District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux. Malnar, of Amite, was honored along with other honorees that the LHSC felt had demonstrated commitment in reducing the number of impaired drivers in Louisiana, a news release said. This included law enforcement officers, a judge, a district attorney and other agencies. According to the Louisiana District Attorney’s Association, the district attorney board was asked to nominate a district attorney and an assistant district attorney to be honored. Malnar was nominated by Perrilloux,

the 21st judicial District Attorney. Malnar was selected because of her work in prosecuting DWI offenses and her efforts in community education in relation to impaired driving, Perrilloux said in a news release. She regularly performs presentations, law enforcement workshops and area high schools mock trial demonstrations, the release said. In Perrilloux’s nomination letter he addressed the many reasons Malnar should be chosen, stating: “Over the years, Le’Anne has shown a continuous commitment to fulfilling her duties as a prosecutor utilizing her talents in the exceptional execution of her job,” Perrilloux said in his nomination letter. “She is able to work under difficult, highpressure situations and still attain excellent results. Nevertheless, the town ended last year with $168,000 left in the general fund, down slightly from $181,000 the year before. The audit lists other concerns, including a possible violation of public bidding law. According to the audit, the town “could not provide sufficient evidence” that they sought multiple quotes when they purchased a $22,500 used dump truck.

She refused to give into it, she said, instead getting up every day and doing something, even when she felt like rolling over and going back to sleep. Life moves on, she said, and the laps she does as part of the relay are very symbolic of that. She walks with her team in groups, and they are the same people who supported her emotionally and physically. “It’s really a celebration,” she said. “And we have such a good time, it’s really a lot of fun.” Laura Dunlap, organizer of the local event, said last year an estimated 1,000 people participated in the walk, and they raised more than $32,000. This year, they’ve set a goal of $37,000. Dunlap, also assistant principal at Seventh Ward Elementary School, said several schools in the area have teams, and her school’s team is at about 40 people, mostly teachers. “Individuals interested in being a part of relay can go online to join a team or start a team, but you do not have to be on a team to attend. Retired Navy Lt. George Will was a recent guest speaker at the Tangipahoa Volunteers for Family and Community meeting. The group is an all-volunteer arm of the LSU Extension Service that meets quarterly. Will represented South East Louisiana Military Organization, a local nonprofit organization of veterans of all military services. SELMO’s purpose is the coordination of efforts to better serve veterans with the limited funds available to military service organizations, he said. One of the group’s main local projects is involvement in the national Wreath Across America program, which places balsam wreaths on veterans’ graves. Individuals preorder wreaths that are delivered to one central location in the area for distribution. On the same day — Dec. 12 this year — the wreaths are laid. Friends and family of veterans of all wars from the Revolutionary War to the current conflict are invited to purchase the wreaths, he said. SELMO and WAA work together to place wreaths on all veterans’ graves nationally, he said. Last year, Wreath Across America placed wreaths on more than 720,000 graves nationwide, and SELMO placed more than 100 wreaths locally. SELMO hopes to distribute 500 wreaths this year, he said. Another part of the Wreaths Across America project undertaken by SELMO is the identification of every veteran’s grave in Tangipahoa Parish, he said.

Lt. George Will, retired U. S. Navy, was a recent guest speaker at the Tangipahoa Volunteers for Family and Community quarterly meeting. Will distributed forms asking TVFC members to search local cemeteries for veteran’s graves, even if not a family member. The location and other pertinent information will be logged into a database. Many of these graves no longer have family members locally to report the location, he said. Local residents are encouraged to adopt these graves as a way of respect for the service these men and women have given, he said. For more information to order a wreath, adopt a local grave or request a Veterans Graves Location Project form, call Will at (985) 517-0076. Tangipahoa Volunteers for Family and Community is a local group volunteering more than 6,000 hours each year to area charitable organizations, Sandra Madere said. New to this year’s lineup of programs are Zoom Into Computer Science and Zoom Into Environmental Sciences, a news release said. Favorite Zoom programs from previous years to be offered include animation, automotive technology, industrial and engineering technology, photography, television, and theatre. More Zoom programs are being developed now. Zoom into Careers is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for June 15 to 18. Registration will be limited in each workshop to small groups, some as low as six participants. Registration will continue through June 4 and will soon be available online at www.southeastern.edu/ zoom. The workshops are $280 prior to May 7, and $295 until

June 4. “Our four-day workshops are designed to explore the variety of career paths available in each of these exciting fields. Participants attending Zoom workshops are exposed to a real work environment that focuses on teamwork and project completion,” said Charlotte Collins, director of Non-Credit Programs at Southeastern. “At the end of the week, Zoom participants demonstrate what they have learned to family and friends.” Workshops are open to all seventh- through 12th-grade students and are scheduled on the main campus in Hammond, the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker, and at Southeastern’s St. Tammany Center in Mandeville, as well as NTCC’s Greensburg campus. “To celebrate our seventh year,” Collins said, “Southeastern has partnered with area high schools and NTCC to provide a taste of work in various fields. Please visit our website or contact us for updates.”

BLUE RUN

Continued from page 1G One of the services CAS provides is forensic interviews for physical and sexual abuse cases, Cangelosi said, which significantly reduce the impact of abuse on the victims. Ashleigh Fuller, forensic interviewer covering Ascension, St. James and the Felicianas, sees children just after they’ve told someone about an instance of abuse. Her field is fairly new, she said, and was the answer to an interview process that added the trauma of retelling the story of abuse many times to a child already experiencing a traumatic event. “I’m a neutral third-party for investigations started by the Department of Children and Family Services and law enforcement,” Fuller said. “I interview the child in a developmentally sensitive and legally sound way. It’s audio and videorecorded, and supervised by the investigating party.” That breaks down to openended questions that take into account children’s age and grasp of concepts like time and place, she said. Younger children can’t answer when and where questions as accurately, because time and place don’t exist in the same way to them yet. The recording makes it more likely that the child would have to tell the story of the traumatic events as few times as pos-

sible. “Ideally, just twice,” she said, once when the child tells someone, and once for the forensic interview. “Say a child tells a teacher. The teacher would take the child to the counselor, where the story would be repeated,” Fuller said. The principal would come next, then the DCFS, then law enforcement. Because the interview is recorded from start to finish, Fuller said, and the investigating parties are witnessing the interview from another room, the situation is more ideal both for the child and the investigators. CAS also offers a class called Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children that teaches first responders, police, teachers and anyone else who wants to learn what to do when a child comes to them with a complaint. The run is a light-hearted way to promote CAS in the community, Cangelosi said, and is already strongly supported by the agencies who use them frequently. “The 23rd Judicial District Bar Association has the biggest Blue Run team,” she said. For all those who want to participate, registration will be open all this week and will also be available the morning of the run. The cost is $35 per person. Runners and walkers may register as individuals or teams. To register, or to learn more about CAS or view the Blue Run’s sponsors, visit www. childadv.net/blue-run.html.

schools Despite snow, SLU dance delegation attends forum Advocate staff report Southeastern Louisiana University dance faculty Skip Costa and Martie Fellom and four Southeastern students traveled in early March to attend the 2015 South Region American College Dance Association Conference in Clarksville, Tennessee. Unfortunately, snow got in the way. “Southeastern was the first school to arrive; and we learned that Austin Peay State University had closed and would remain closed for several days due to 8 inches of snow,” Fellom said. Fellom said the group, consisting of Faith Allen and Christa Clement Sevin, of Ponchatoula; Lindsy Brown, of El Paso, Texas; and Joseph Matherne, of Luling,

were airborne en route to the conference and never received the message that the university was closed. “The four-day conference was compressed into two days,” she said. “Even so, it was still an enriching experience filled with master classes, concerts, adjudication feedback sessions and meetings.” Fellom said much of the cost associated with the trip was paid by student self-assessed fees and grants. University dance faculty from the region and guest artists offer classes and lectures during the conference, Fellom said. There are also informal concerts performed, and Southeastern student Brown was selected to present her work, “The Book of Life,” with all four student at-

tendees performing it. Southeastern selected two works to perform for adjudication at the conference: Allen’s solo work “Time” and Costa’s piece “Courage, Hope, Strength.” “One of the highlights of the conference is the gala concert, in which the adjudicators select several pieces to represent the best works at the conference,” Fellom said. “Skip’s piece was chosen for the gala because, in the words of one of the adjudicators, ‘It was elegant in its simplicity and beautifully crafted.’ ” A panel of judges selected eight works out of 31 dances performed at the conference to be showcased at the gala performance on the festival’s final day.
