GONZALES — Willie Baxter used to avoid the police, he said, but for about an hour on Saturday he sat next to an Ascension Parish deputy as they ate plates of jambalaya and enjoyed friendly fellowship. Sitting next to Baxter, at a long row of tables set up in the front parking lot of Divine Grace Temple, was Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office Staff Sgt. Richard Boe. About a dozen local law enforcement officers and nearly 100 Temple members and community residents were attending the first — but probably not the last -— Police Appreciation Day sponsored by the Temple’s Men’s Fellowship group. “There was a time I wouldn’t be near a police officer unless I was handcuffed, but I gave my life to Christ and all that changed for me,” Baxter said. “This (event) is important because we need communication between the authorities and the community.” Boe agreed. “This keeps us in touch with the community. A lot of times all you have to do is ask to find out what the problem is,” he said. “The community supports us hands down, second to none.” Apostle Alice S. Martin, pastor of the 300 member Divine Grace Temple, located at 728 E. La. 30, said she had been burdened to host an event like this for awhile, especially in light of the clashes across America between some African-American communities and their police departments. “I felt in my spirit that the Lord wanted to bring the policemen and the church together as one,” Martin said. “We’ve got to keep order in the church and the police need to keep order out in the world so we can have äSee POLICE, page 2G

community Wreaths Across America ceremony set Saturday Advocate staff report A Wreaths Across America Day ceremony is planned at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Veterans Memorial Park in Gonzales. The Ascension Veterans Associations is hosting the ceremony, which will include the placement of seven ceremonial wreaths to remember all military personnel “who served, honor their sacrifices, and teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms, AVA committee chairwoman Tanya Whitney said in a news release. Specially designated wreaths for the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POW/ MIA will be placed during a ceremony that will be coordinated simultaneously at more than 1,000 participating locations across the country. After the ceremony, the AVA will distribute wreaths to volunteers who will place wreaths on the grave sites of veterans
throughout the parish, she said. The AVA also has a minimum number of wreaths that are available for purchase through Dec. 12. In 2015 it is estimated that about 1 million wreaths will be placed nationwide, by over 600,000 volunteers as part of the Wreaths Across America. Currently, 130 wreaths are slated for placement during the AVA’s inaugural event in Ascension Parish. The group is starting its 2016 campaign in January and hopes to double its efforts next year. Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreathlaying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman, Morrill Worcester, in 1992. He and a crew of volunteers cooked enough jambalaya to feed about 300 people, he said. “I feel it is important to do this as Christians because a lot of the negative feelings toward police officers have been coming from the black community, and what better way to bring reconciliation to the community than to have a black church host a law enforcement appreciation day, Bayer said. Inside the store, nearly 150 volunteers from school clubs, community organizations and the Sheriff’s Office received cards with a child’s first name, age and a suggested list of toys. The Sheriff’s Office placed a $40 limit on the amount the volunteers could spend per child. Volunteers then brought their purchases to specially-marked registers to check out where Wal-Mart waived all taxes. Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley told the crowd that while

the youngsters enjoy receiving gifts, the night offered a valuable lesson for those young volunteer shoppers giving a hand. “We want you to also learn how to give stuff,” Wiley said. Donations from various community organizations continue to allow the Sheriff’s Office to buy these toys, including $870 from G.W. Carver Primary School, $700 from Ascension Credit Union, 120 bikes from the charity Bikes for Tikes and a toy donation from Bizzy Bunch Preschool, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Lake Elementary School’s Beta Club raised $5,000 by selling jambalaya and holding other events, said the school’s Beta chapter sponsor, Morgan Hutchinson. “The kids are so young,” said Hutchinson. “It’s good to get them out to volunteer and give back to their community.” Cheyenne Moran, a Lake Elementary School seventh-grader and Beta Club member, shopped Thursday with her cousin, Kobi Mayers, and aunt, Daphne Domingue. The group was shopping for three family members, all girls, Moran said.
Moran wanted to surprise the older girl with some body wash and spray even though the items were not on her list. After attending last year’s toy distribution, Moran said she hoped to go again this year. “It’s usually cool to see how the kids react,” Moran said. Down another toy aisle crammed with shoppers and stocked high with Barbie dolls, Shawanda Hebert shopped with daughter, Madisyn Hebert, a seventh-grader at St. Amant Middle School. They were searching for Dora the Explorer toys, baby dolls, board games and a Leap Frog learning toy for 6- and 8-yearold girls. Madisyn Hebert said she enjoyed the experience of shopping with Christmas Crusade because she liked the idea of toys “going to families that need them.” But it was harder than expected to shop for strangers, some said. Ayden Delapasse, 10, went through his suggested list for an 11-year-old girl rather quickly though, selecting arts and crafts projects, canvases and paint. His brother, Stantyn Delapasse, 7, was having a more difficult time thinking of gift ideas for an 8-year-old girl, especially since one of the items on his Christmas Crusade card was a phone app without actual merchandise to purchase, said the boys’ mother, Kassi Delapasse. Ayden said the shopping trip made him feel “good because you help people.” Kassi Delapasse struggled to describe how she felt about the excursion without becoming emotional. “That’s the word,” Kassi Delapasse finally said. “Fortunate.” Christmas Crusade toy distribution will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 12 at the Donaldsonville Courthouse and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Gonzales Courthouse, said Fontenot. The city operates municipal gas and sewer services but not a system for potable water. Peoples Water Co., a privately held agency, supplies potable water to customers within the city limits. However, Ascension Parish government is in the works to purchase Peoples Water, having authorized Parish President Tommy Martinez in June to negotiate the deal for up to $5 million.
“If the parish proceeds with purchasing the water company, it is more than capable of adopting this ordinance, as it will be the water purveyor to enforce it,” Long said. Area water companies, including Peoples Water, have begun sending notifications about the new equipment, which must be installed and inspected by customers. Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr. said the city has received a second
notice from state government concerning installation of the new equipment on city properties. Sullivan added that Carroll Aucoin, manager of Peoples Water, informed him that if customers do not install the equipment, their water service will be deactivated until they do so. The cross connection and backflow preventers “need to be on all potable water sourc-
es, whether it be sprinkler systems or structures,” the mayor said. Long said the city should comply with the mandate, regardless of its choice to become involved with its enforcement. Long suggested the council table the issue until March, so it can wait for the parish’s proposed purchase of Peoples Water to be completed before possibly adopting the measure.

Gators host basketball shootout The St. Amant Gators hosted the Gold Dome Shootout over the weekend, winning three of the four games they played. St. Amant is 7-3 on the season and opened with Hammond, notching a 71-55 win over the Tornadoes. Game two found the Gators pitted against the East Feliciana Tigers. This was a close contest as St. Amant held on for a 58-52 victory. The third contest was against Airline of Bossier City. The Vikings are a good team and would test the young Gators. The Gators had to come from a 16-point deficit with six minutes left in the game to steal the win from Airline 71-67 in overtime. “The game against Airline was the most intense game I’ve ever been involved in my whole coaching career,” said head coach Travis Uzee. “We found a way to come from behind and win in overtime. As a matter of fact, we were behind in six of the seven wins we have and in three of them, we were behind in double digits.” Game four turned out to be the only loss of the weekend as the Thibodaux Tigers handed the Gators a 70-45 loss. The Gators have a young team without a returning starter, although Travis Cole and Nick Fehn rotated the fifth man position last season. “Travis and Nick have plenty of game time but neither was a real starter last season,” Uzee said. “But they will bring us some experience and floor leadership.” Freshman K.J. Franklin is one of the new players that will start this season and expects to be an impact player from the start. Sophomore Jahnoi Daley Has had a five- or six-game stretch where he’s really shined. Three other juniors are on the starting roster: Carter Templet, Cole and Kameron Kelson. Cole averages 12.7 points per game with 4.7 rebounds, which is pretty healthy for a guard. Kelson is a junior forward who is averaging 10.6 points per game and a respectable 7.5 rebounds. Templet is averaging 8.9 points, Franklin, 8.7 points, and Daley, 6.5 points. Daley has been the catalyst on the defense and Fehn is tough playing the ball as well, but he hasn’t been healthy for the past week. The Gators have a really balanced scoring attack, with one guy stepping up each game, and it might be a different guy each time out. Fehn, the only senior, is a good leader who will be team captain as well. Cole and Franklin are the starting point guards who play at the same time. “We have a young team without a lot of experience but a very talented team,” Uzee said. “But what I value the most is that we have some good kids. They want to get better, they like playing and just hanging
out with each other. This is what will make us a success. “This is sort of a rebuilding year of sorts, but we expect to be very competitive,” Uzee added.
Griffins play in Gator Shootout
The Dutchtown Griffins played three games in the St. Amant Gold Dome Shootout and came away with two wins and a single loss. The Griffins opened the event with a win over the Woodlawn Panthers, 56-43. The second contest was a blowout against the Hammond Tornadoes with the final score of 6636. The last game was the only loss ASCENSION of the tournament ATHLETICS against the Airline Vikings 58-50. The leading scorer for the Griffins was junior guard Neill Caldwell. The leading rebounder was 6-foot-4-inch junior guard Aaron Hodoh. The 3-4 Griffins are a young team without one returning starter. “We’re young in so many ways,” said head coach Patrick Hill. “Neill Caldwell logged a lot of minutes, along with junior forward Devin Jackson, so we are not without some experience on the floor. “On the offensive side, Neill Caldwell is the most consistent scorer we have right now. Starting to emerge as being aggressive with the basketball looking to score is Aaron Hodoh along with senior guard Tim Hasten,” Hill said. “Sophomore guard Jacolby Ambeau is coming around as well. “What we’re looking for on offense is two guys to score in double digits every game and that would give us 20 points or more,” Hill said. “They rest of the points will have to come by committee, each other player contributing a few points. We are going to be a mid-40 to low50s points a game. I don’t think we can score 60 to 70 points a game.” At this point, with seven games under their hat, Hill is pleased with their defensive effort overall. “Devin Jackson is playing well on defense as well as Aaron Hodoh is rebounding the ball well. Junior guard Kendrick Oubre is helping the defensive effort as well.” Hill said he expects improvement. “My assessment of our team at this point is that our players have the will to get better,” he said. “They take my constructive criticism well and use it to get better. They are taking time on their own on the court and in class to get better. It’s going to be a tough but learning season and we will improve with each game because the guys want to.”

St. Amant’s Travis Cole picks up the ball after an on court battle with East Ascension’s Jimel London, at left, as Shedrick Smith, in blue in back, and head coach Barry Whittington look on during a January game at St. Amant High School’s Gold Dome. Cole is expected to contribute this season. every species of fish an angler might want to catch. Fly fishing has caught on like wildfire in the past few years so the interest in tying your own fly is a pretty neat idea with lots of advantages. Uniqueness is one of them; when you get some experience, you can tie them the way you want to instead of having to buy only what’s available. Another is cost. Buying them can be a little expensive as some of the better flies are a bit pricey. Buying the equipment and supplies will cost some money but it pays off in the long run. These demonstrations and lessons are open to the public at no cost. The workshop will be held at the Ascension Parish Library at 708 S. Irma Blvd. in Gonzales from 9 a.m. to noon. Call the library at (225) 647-3955. The classes will be held on Jan. 9, Feb. 13, March 12 and April 9. Call Crawford at (225) 644-7989. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate. He can be contacted at reelman@eatel.net or ascension@theadvocate.com.
