LIVINGSTON — Yellow Jackets may have a chance to become military cadets in the future as school officials consider establishing a Junior ROTC program at Denham Springs High School. Leaders stressed that the process can be lengthy and said they haven’t even determined which branch they will approach to invite on campus.
The Army seems an unlikely partner, as that branch has currently reached its JROTC funding limit, according to the Army website. The parish’s only other program, at Walker High, is affiliated with the Marines, and principal Jason St. Pierre praised the effect it’s had on campus in its first three years. “They’re strictly implementing Marine Corps principles in the program. ... (The cadets)
have standards they have to meet behaviorally and academically,” he said, adding that the desire to remain in JROTC has kept some students from dropping out. Schools do have to invest in the program though, providing classrooms, office space, an area to practice marching and an armory, St. Pierre said. The Marines also require a secure shooting range for air rifles, which Walker does not yet have
but is building as part of their ongoing expansion, he added. The Navy application makes no mention of firing ranges but asks several questions about campus computer resources. The Air Force would require a school the size of Denham Springs High to field at least 100 cadets. Schools are also responsible for paying half the salary of two officers to serve as instructors, one commissioned and one
non-commissioned, St. Pierre explained. School Board Vice President Buddy Mincey said he’d like to establish a program as soon as next year but admitted that working with the federal government, the process may take a bit longer. Superintendent John Watson noted the decision does not just rely on the school — the military branch will have to agree to the partnership as well.

By encouraging children to read, we hope to help them grow their imaginations and develop their critical thinking and decision-making skills,” Jindal said. “With this book, we hope that the students of Louisiana not only develop a lifelong love for reading but also cherish the state that they call home.”

Hammond Eastside Magnet welcomes SLU education students
Fifth-graders in Becky Tobin’s class at Hammond Westside Elementary Montessori conducted a scientific investigation lesson Nov. 9 to determine what factors affect the period of a pendulum. Students tested three independent variables having to do with motion: release point, mass and length. Concepts discussed during the lesson were motion, speed, gravity, force, potential energy, kinetic energy, independent variable and dependent variables. RELEASE POINT: Using a 6-inch ruler, students released the bob of the pendulum from a height of 6 inches above the desk. They timed the amount of time it took to complete 10 periods (10 complete swings). They performed two trials at the same height. To determine if it would swing faster if released at a higher point, students did two trials from a height of approximately 16 inches above the desk. It took the same amount of time to complete 10 periods no matter from what height the bob was released. MASS: Students timed 10 periods of the pendulum swing using one large washer and then compared the time to two large washers. The students determined the mass did not affect the time it takes to swing. LENGTH: Students compared the initial length, 18 inches of string with a shorter length of about 8 inches. They determined the pendulum swung much faster with the shorter string.

Wildcats challenged to repeat On display above a baseline in the Walker High gym, a giant portrait of the team that advanced to the Class 5A title game in girls basketball last season keeps the legacy of those Wildcats alive and well. Adding another deep playoff run this year could be challenging, however, given the amount of experience and production Walker lost when the 2015 class graduated. The team’s only three seniors, Jamie Gibson, Baylie Stears and Kacie Fountain, combined to average 52 points SPORTS per game as ROUNDUP Walker made its first trip to the state tournament since 2009 and advanced to the state title game for the first time since 1977. All three of those seniors signed Division I scholarships. But coach Korey Arnold said he isn’t expecting the kind of drop-off the numbers would suggest. “I think we’re going to get better as the season goes on,” Arnold said. “The young ones have to find their role and gel together. Once that happens, I think we’re going to be tough to beat.” Off to a 5-3 start, the Wildcats entered the Livingston Parish/Blount General Contractors Basketball Tournament at Live Oak as the No. 2 seed behind District 4-5A
Scott Hotard
rival Denham Springs. Holden was seeded third and Albany fourth. Walker won the Livingston Parish tournament each of the last two seasons, part of a run that included a 31-5 mark in 2014 with a berth in the 5A quarterfinals and a 31-6 finish last year en route to the 5A title game. The Wildcats now move forward with a lineup that features two seniors, one junior, one sophomore and a freshman in the starting five. Senior forward Keeona Brown, a Nicholls State signee, will be the go-to offensive weapon after averaging 12 points last year. Junior guard Treasure Mansur missed the early part of the schedule with a knee injury but is expected back later this month. Arnold admits it may take some time to get his young team up to speed. What has already been established, however, is the Wildcats expect to win. “That’s one thing I don’t have to fight like a lot of schools,” Arnold said. “I don’t think we ever walk into a gym intimidated. We practice hard, we prepare hard, and I think the kids know that. They saw last year what it took. So they know what kind of work goes into getting there.”

year coach Kevin Caballero. On the girls side, a potential matchup of Denham and Walker would pit the programs that have dominated the tournament in recent years. Denham has won the parish tournament six times since 2004.
