Andrea Andrews and her husband Ryan live in Youngsville. From that base, they reach out to help others in crisis. Their Meadow Bend Lakes residence is home to five dogs currently, sometimes as many as a dozen, but that’s only part of the story. An account executive for Townsquare Media, Andrea Andrews rescues and fosters shelter animals and has for most of her adult life. “Eight years now. I joined AAVA last year — Animal Aid Vermilion Area — it’s a closed group on Facebook solely devoted to the Vermilion area,” she said. “They post ‘this one needs a foster’ and I’ll figure out which one I want to intake.” “I go for the ones who haven’t got a shot. The ones on their death beds that will not make it in a shelter. Puppies have a tendency to get sick pretty fast, and my pack gets along better with puppies.” Andrews owns four dogs of her own, three of which were rescues, and fosters one currently. All stay indoors and bed down with her, but her home boasts a big backyard also. “I had 12 dogs in my house last week, a mama and her seven pups. They went to a new home in Florida, so it was only for a night. My husband just rolls his eyes,” she laughed. Andrea also helps people who find out about her and want to rehome their pets for whatever reason. She does help out with kittens, and her first rescue was a litter of kittens. “We need more fosters to step up. The more we have, the more we can get them out of the shelters. People are cruel, there are a lot of dumps and abandonments. And a lot of us who put a lot on our plates. Most of us have kids, personal pets, and full-time jobs.” “We find a way to make it work.” A lot of help is needed is needed at the shelter, especially on the weekends, walking and cleaning kennels. “I can’t always make it on Saturday, and sometimes we’re the only human interaction the animals get.” She says it’s a myth that only mongrels end up homeless. “There are plenty of purebred dogs in shelters, expensive

It was my second day in Air Med and I was dispatched to a shooting. I’d been flying before with a whole team, this was my second day on my own. The 15-year-old female had attempted suicide, she was unresponsive, and I had to treat and intubate her. After months of surgeries, physical therapy, and learning to walk again, she made a full recovery.” “Now she’s a big-time advocate for preventing teen suicide.”

Most sought-after kitchen, bath features Walk-in pantry tops list of features home buyers seek in kitchens Today’s savvy home buyers are paying more attention to kitchen and bathroom features, and new homes are reflecting their preferences. A kitchen is not only a cooking area – it is a space where people gather to create and share meals. Similarly, function and design are characteristics home buyers are looking for in bathrooms. With a variety of finishes and amenities in kitchens and bathrooms available, which features stand out for home buyers? A recent study conducted by the National Association of Home Builders reveals what kitchen and bath features are among the most wanted this year. The survey asked first-time buyers and existing home owners to rank several kitchen and bath features based on how essential they are to make a home-purchasing decision.
Kitchens When asked about kitchens, more than half of home buyers ranked walk-in pantry as the top desirable feature in the kitchen. The second most wanted kitchen feature was a double sink, followed by a table space for eating, central island and granite/natural stone countertop. The preferred finishes for cab-

Bathroom When it comes to the bathroom, home buyers say having a linen closet in the master bath is the most desired feature. The second most wanted feature was having both a shower stall and tub in the master bath. Other top preferences include a double vanity and private toilet compartment in the master bath. Home buyers increasingly say they want a white toilet, tub and sink. Unlike kitchens, there were stark contrasts in bathroom feature preferences among different generations. More than a third of older home buyers age 65 or older do not want a whirlpool tub in the master bath, compared to only eight percent of buyers under 45.
