Cajun and Creole: Breaux Bridge is a hub for both cultures. Breaux Bridge — le Pont Breaux en français — may be small, but big things are going on. “We have a little more than 8,000 residents in Breaux Bridge,” said Susan Brazell, “Not a huge area, but I’d be hard pressed to think about what we don’t have.” “We’re growing like crazy and our street signs are in French. That lets you know right away you’re somewhere else.” According to Brazell, the reason Breaux Bridge is bustling is the food, music, joie de vivre. Home to Cajun musicians of international acclaim including the Huval Family Band, the Balfas, and “South of I-10” slide guitar player Sonny Landreth, there is live music in the cafes downtown every other week. “Café Sydnie Mae, Buck and Johnny’s Saturday morning zydeco dance — there’s a dance scene like you wouldn’t believe,” she said.

Acclaimed slide guitarist Sonny Landreth lives in Breaux Bridge. Designated as the Breaux Bridge Cajun Creole Cultural District, the town has attracted tourism and new development. “The Thai Bayou Café is opening in September,” said Susan. “They were awarded the best Thai restaurant in Denver for five years. We’re excited about it.” The Louisiana Cultural Districts Program was created by Act 298 of the

2007 Regular Session of the Legislature. The primary goal of this initiative is to spark community revitalization based on cultural activity through tax incentives, technical assistance, and resources. Also arriving shortly is The Pink Alligator, located at 112 E. Bridge St., a new art gallery belonging to local sculptor and chainsaw artist Kelly Guidry.

“There’s new shopping — the antique shopping mall — I spent four hours in there the last time I went — Rustic Relic for jewelry, Cochon Cannery — every one of them is a family-owned business. That’s pretty unusual,” said Brazell. Her husband Carl is vice-chairman for the Teche Center for the Arts, located at 210 E. Bridge St. in downtown Breaux Bridge where Susan is also board member. “We are really not lofty,” said Carl. “A bunch of people who live in Breaux Bridge and celebrate the culture of the Cajun and Creole people. I was invited six years ago to participate.” Brazell, who has lived and worked abroad in Europe, is originally from Crowley. “We’ve created a mission to serve as the primary cultural arts and historical center for St. Martin Parish, but we serve Acadiana as well,” he said. “Our passion is for the culture and we do all kinds of things, like educating young people in culture, music, and the arts. For instance, there’s Treble on the Teche, a four-day Cajun French music seminar taught by Brazos Huval where they can play accordion and violin, cooking classes — we bought an old movie theater so we now own the building.” TCA is located at 210 E. Bridge St. and forms an outer boundary of the Breaux Bridge Cajun Creole Cultural District. Its status as a 501C-3 qualifies it for additional local, state, regional, and federal grants. “We have exhibits and concerts, it’s very well-rounded. Acadiana Center for the Arts programming, but on our scale.” Brazell once emceed in French, and until recently hosted a French Table at the TCA every month, an event where interested parties get together and practice French — Cajun French. “The mailing list has grown to 45,” said Carl. The organization hopes to offer Creole language classes soon also. Creoles and Cajuns both speak either French or Creole and in some cases both. “Cajun French is more like the French of centuries ago,” said Brazell. “Creole is a different language. There are Creole speakers in Cecilia, for instance.” “To help perpetuate the culture is a dream come true.”

Once you’ve decided on a home renovation project, the first step is to hire a qualified contractor. Research and preparation are key to finding the best contractor to get the job done. To help find a contractor who is right for you and steer clear of illegitimate partnerships, consider the following tips.
