Two recent Lafayette residents live the dream BY PATRICIA GANNON fete@theadvocate.com

Morning DJ Emily Jensen is Townsquare Media’s newest talent. Every morning with CJ Clements, Jensen co-hosts CJ & Emily J from 6 a.m. to 10 on 99.9 KTDY. Her quick speech is a dead giveaway she’s from upstate New York. “CJ is always NEW KIDS telling me to slow down,” she laughed. ON THE Jensen, 30, came BLOCK to Lafayette in November from Townsquare’s Lake Charles market, and has replaced recently retired Debbie Ray. How she got on the air at all is a happy accident. “I thought I wanted to do PR and was working as a promotions assistant at iHeartMedia in New York,” she said. “One day they had me sit-in, and then asked me back. And again. And again.” She and her military husband are geographically separated for now. “We’ve survived the distance thing before,” she said. “When this job came up, he said ‘you have to go.’ ” A communications major and self-confessed musical theater nerd, Jensen loves acting, singing, and performing, skills she says translate to radio. Her on-air persona? “For the most part, bubbly, energetic, and upbeat,” she said. Since the show was a staple before her arrival, Jensen’s trying to keep what the audience is used to. “It’s more of a partnership,” she explained. “Team work makes the dream work.” “I could never be Debbie Ray. She’s legendary.” Jensen pegs the show demographic as female-driven, 30s and older. “I love the music and what we get to talk about,” she said. What she loves about Lafayette is the welcome. “It was an easy transition. It’s refreshing not to feel like an outsider, and there’s so much to learn and to do. I’ll be riding on Townsquare’s float this Mardi Gras, at least I think I am.” Her goal was always to be in Lafayette and work here. “It’s just the best feeling. My dream job. The show has been so great, I’m trying not to mix things up. Tweak it in smaller ways,

It works.” Not surprisingly, Jensen likes it quiet on a short drive, but on her own during longer stretches, she’s a music omnivore. “If I’m turning on the radio, I like a mix--country, Top 40, classics, Ed Sheeran, Avett Brothers, and Taylor Swift — because she’s just feel-good.” Much like Emily J.

Promoting the arts Samuel Oliver also thinks he has the best job in town: promoting the arts. A Lafayette native and LSU grad once headed for academia, Oliver was assistant director at the Contemporary Art

Center in New Orleans, did contract work at The Ogden Museum, and got as far away as Edinburgh’s jazz venues. “They have a festival for everything, a cultural capital in Europe,” he said. Since November, Oliver has worn the director’s mantle at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. He goes for the big picture when he talks. “An arts and cultural organization is a core part of humanity,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll ever have the lay of the land, but I feel confident knowing where they’ve been and where we’re going.” “It’s why I moved back to Lafayette.” A big piece is promoting arts of the region. ”Re-embracing its roots as the

Acadiana Arts Council,” he said. “What we can do for individual artists to support them.” Part of Oliver’s plan is to bring resources and helping small organizations such as the Teche Center for the Arts make connections. “We’ll continue to present local work, expand the audience, and support the local businesses. Our role is to support the broader community.” As for galleries leaving downtown and the ecosystem supporting both, he sees the AcA not as a competitor, but a partner, and hopes to make ArtWalk more of a signature event. Those plans include more music and performance, including paid buskers. “AcA has a strict policy — pay artists for their time. It brings value to downtown. We want to be able to explain coming downtown on the second Saturday every month is a good night out. It’s also a more viable business model for a commercial gallery.” Ultimately, he envisions making things accessible to all and hopes the person who’s moved to Acadiana but isn’t an artist will join the tribe. “We’re not just this museum space where you may not know art. I envision a sign saying, ‘Come on in, ya’ll.’” “And our artwork is excellent.”

The 14th Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival began Jan. 23, but there are many opportunities to see screenings before the festival ends Wednesday, Jan. 30. Hosted by the nonproďŹ t Cinema on the Bayou Film Society, the festival will screen over 180 ďŹ lms at venues in and around Lafayette. The 2019 lineup of ofďŹ cial selections includes 41 feature-length narrative ďŹ ction and documentary ďŹ lms and 140 short ďŹ lms, including narrative, documentary, animated and experimental ďŹ lms. The majority of the ďŹ lms are world, U.S. or Louisiana premieres from across the United States and Canada as well as from France, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Haiti, Belgium, South Korea, Thailand, India, Lebanon, Germany and Brazil, with over 60 French language ďŹ lms screening. In addition to ďŹ lm screenings, the festival will present panel discussions, workshops, music and parties with over 200 directors, producers, cinematographers, distributors, actors, grant sources and other industry professionals expected to attend from across the U.S. and Canada as well as France, Australia, Japan and Lebanon. The festival will close on Wednesday, Jan. 30, with the world premiere screening of Finding Cajun, which provides an in-depth and historically informed perspective on the origin of Cajun identity and how it has evolved over the last 70 years. Director Nathan Rabalais will

be in attendance for a question-and-answer session after the ďŹ lm. The ďŹ lm will screen at 7 p.m. at Acadiana Center for the Arts, 101 W. Vermilion, Lafayette, and will be followed by music provided by New Brunswick singer-songwriter and ďŹ lmmaker Daniel Leger and a reception with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at www.cinemaonthebayou.com or at the door on the night of the event. This year’s festival will include its ďŹ rst Artist in Residence, QuĂŠbecois ďŹ lmmaker John Blouin, who will present his LUX 35mm ďŹ lm installation at Acadiana Center for the Arts, throughout the Festival, and concluding with Art Walk on Feb. 9. Blouin will also conduct a ďŹ lmmaking class and provide outreach to local schools during his month-long stay in Lafayette. Remodel or relocate? Factors to consider Often, both options offer benefits but disrupt your routines It’s becoming clear that you’d really like a kitchen where two of you can cook at the same time. A playroom that’s not the living room. Increasingly it seems like there are too many people and not enough bathrooms. Or maybe you’re looking ahead and want your place to be more safe and usable as you age. You’re ready to make a change and now you have to decide: Remodel or relocate? There’s no one right answer for every situation. So before you look at houses for sale while also sketching out plans to redo your current master bath and expand your kitchen, take a look at which approach best suits your wants and cans. That way, you can decide the best option to pursue and focus your efforts toward that goal. Answering these questions can help you sort it out: • How do you feel about your neighborhood? Do your friends and your kids’ friends live there, is your favorite park or coffee shop within walking distance, are the schools a great fit for your family? Or do you keep wishing you were closer to work, had more open space nearby, had shops within walking distance, or a bigger or smaller yard? • How does your home compare in

And once you do move, there may also be costs for fixing up the new house. • What’s the market for the type of home you want? How likely are you to find a place that you can afford with the features you’re seeking in a neighborhood of your choice? Awareness key to storm preparation Keep tornado readiness supplies handy. These include clean water, batteries, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, and packaged, nonperishable foods.

Metro Media Roughly 1,000 tornadoes per year are reported to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Tornadoes are intense, violent storms that feature a column of air that extends from a thunderstorm cloud to the ground. Tornadoes can occur anywhere in the world. However, the U.S. experiences more tornadoes than any other country. According to Verisk’s Property Claim Service, tornadoes accounted for 39.9 percent of insured catastrophe losses from 1997 to 2016, and the average annual loss on these severe storms was $11.23 billion. Tornadoes are volatile, powerful storms. They have the capability to flip cars, destroy buildings and send deadly debris flying into the air. Intense winds can reach more than 200 miles per hour. The Department of Homeland Security notes that there are many things people can do to keep themselves safe from tornadoes before, during and after these storms.

Practice what to do in the event of a tornado so the entire family knows what to do if disaster strikes.

Tips to overcome everyday aches and pains Metro Media Pain is a significant concern for many people. Estimates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in five adults across the globe suffer from pain. Pain can affect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suffered an injury while playing a sport or performing another physical activity. For example, lower back pain, which can be caused by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain in the U.S. Such pain may be unavoidable, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday aches and pains cannot be overcome.

BEGIN A WELL-ROUNDED EXERCISE REGIMEN

Athletes over 40 who engage in activities that require repetitive motion might need to take more days off between rounds of golf or other competitive and/or repetitive activities. If tendinitis flares up, take some time away, icing any sore areas, wrapping them in bandages, and elevating them while

Age should not prevent you from being physically active, and numerous studies have touted the benefits of continuing to exercise into your golden years. However, as the body ages, muscle fibers become less dense, resulting in a loss of flexibility that increases the risk of injury and/or soreness. As men and women grow older, they shouldn’t abandon activities like gardening or strength training. But they may need to scale back on the intensity with which they perform such activities.
