Simone Angelle Ancelet grew up trying to downplay her Acadiana culture. Now, she embraces it. Ancelet and her husband, Louis, represent two generations of French immersion and the return of a language that once struggled to survive. “I’m from Breaux Bridge. We had a French teacher and we just got 40 minutes about the weather and such,” she said. All that changed when she met her husband Louis, son of University of Louisiana at Lafayette Cajun folklorist and language professor Barry Ancelet. “Louis had a home immersion program, it wasn’t really a thing yet, so he didn’t go to French immersion schools. He can speak Cajun French. His family does also, and I didn’t know what they were saying, I had to go learn.” she laughed. As an adult, Ancelet enrolled at St. Anne’s Nova Scotia University with the support of her new family, undertaking a rigorous five-week session of language immersion. “I was still in college, and had to take a written exam and an interview. I had only taken a couple of classes, the interview was awful,” she laughed. I got Beginner 2, and I wanted intermediate.” Ancelet proved so strong in class, she was moved up: Four hours every day, Monday through Friday. “My in-laws funded this whole experience,” she said. “You sign a contract to speak French the whole time. If you get caught, you get an avertissement, a warning. The warnings were displayed in the cafeteria. Three of them and you were out. “It puts pressure on you.” Matt Mick is the Charge de Communication for CODOFIL, the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana. “St. Anne’s impact on Louisiana has been a huge part of Lafayette culture. We’ve been sending people for 15 years. It’s sparked renewed interest and renewed energy.” “CODOFIL has done a lot of work over 50 years, not always in the public eye. The best example is the French immersion system. Immersion is a solid pedagogical tool, the best way to do it.”
Myrtle Place Elementary School is on track to be full French immersion by fall 2020. Today, with three children of her own— twins Lissandre and Isolde, and baby Elias, Ancelet has chosen immersion for them also. “I spoke to the girls when they were babies, and Elias can count in French. The twins started in kindergarten at Myrtle Place Elementary and French is spoken at home, but not strictly—just basic sentences.” Results were swift. “Now by the middle of the first year, when they play, they speak more in French. They also have to address the teachers at school in French.” A busy Townsquare Media marketing rep in her professional life, Ancelet tries to surprise her girls for lunch at school and reinforce them. “They all start ‘Je m’appelle…it’s special,’ ” she said. “Their accents are cute. They make the guttural r’s.” Ancelet also lives next door to her inlaws. “They [the children] play school, ‘Bien fait’ [well done], ‘Assieds-toi.’ [sit down] Sometimes I go and sit and pretend to be a student. They do their math problems in French.” “And then sometimes it’s ‘Je suis going to sneeze.’ ” Historically, South Louisiana schools were the first to see French decline. A law passed that mandated English as the language of instruction, part of a wave of Americanization to assimilate. “The school system is where it happened, English was prioritized,” explained Mick. “It’s a beautiful irony, schools were

It also has a pre-K program. “It’s not only popular and successful, it works,” said Mick. “We’re seeing generations come out.” Recently accepted into Leadership
Lafayette, the flagship program of the Leadership Institute of Acadiana, Ancelet was one of only 32 accepted from hundreds who applied. “A big part of the application was to name a time when you challenged an idea,” she said. “I took my culture for granted, and now it’s something to be proud of, something to celebrate. They chose me.”

Off-season repair work offers advantages Paint a room
Spring and summer are high season for home improvements. Winter, especially after the holiday season has passed, seems more like a time to hunker down and get cozy. But the professionals who do home improvements and the suppliers who sell the materials are in business year-round. And during their off-seasons, these businesses will often lower prices to attract more customers. That means homeowners may find that it’s not only easier to schedule these professionals, but also even get a break on the price. Here are a few projects to consider during this winter season:
Spending more time indoors might draw your attention to dingy walls or make you wish for an updated room color. With dry winter air, a window open a crack, and maybe even an exhaust fan in the window, should be more than enough ventilation for a fresh new coat of today’s low volatile compound paints.
