Life after Forty Triton celebrates four decades of camaraderie BY PATRICIA GANNON fete@theadvocate.com

The family that parades together, stays together. At least it’s true for father and son duo Carl and Adam Sonnier. Adam is a Triton board member, their treasurer, and once a duke; Carl is a past board member and twice a duke. The senior Sonnier has been a member for 36 years; the son for 13. “We had young kids, and were looking for excitement,” said Carl. “We joined thinking the balls would be fun. What happens is, you make a whole bunch of new friends.” While not the oldest member, Carl says he’s close. “Krewes out there were too expensive and not “available,” explained Carl, referring to the social exclusivity of some. “The krewe formed because working guys can have a good time. Less than 20 guys got together, and back then the ball was at the Heymann. We just walked around.” “We’ve come a long way.” Greater Southwest Mardi Gras Association board member Chuck Peddy, whose father was one of Triton’s first members, said 12 men signed the original charter in 1979 with Marion “Buddy” Guirovich as founding captain and Mike Thibeaux as the first king. “Although a working man’s krewe, some doctors and lawyers who didn’t have the chops to join other krewes joined Triton,” he said. “It became a landing place for those who wanted to do Mardi Gras.” Fathers and fathers-in-law were in, then younger men joined. Adam was once a page for the man whose business he now owns, and has the yellowed newspaper clipping in his Oil Center office to prove it. Triton is unique in that their tableau is actually an indoor parade. The only place they can fit is the Cajundome with full-size floats and vintage cars. “We can’t have the cars inside the Dome anymore by order of the Fire Marshall,” said Carl. Although work continues throughout

Adam and Carl Sonnier at a Triton event in 2011.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

The Krewe of Triton’s tableau actually is an indoor parade with guests catching throws from floats as seen here in 2013.

Chuck Peddy attends Triton’s 12th Night party at the Petroleum Club. The event traditionally ‘roasts’ this season’s dukes. Peddy’s father was one of Triton’s first members. the year, float modification begins in May. “We’re working men and we do it ourselves,” said Adam. “No paid carpenters or contractors.” Carl remembers the year of the 1996 Spanish galleons. “We simplified after that,” he laughed. “That was the most over-the-top.” “Nothing is difficult,” said Adam. “You socialize, there’s beer in the fridge, we have a no beer and power tools rule, however. You’re going for that fifteenfeet-away, 2-3 drinks audience quality,” he laughed. Adam says the krewe is looking to build new floats in the future. “We want to promote the street parade, to be seen where the public is, and sell both ends — the ball and the parade.” The broad goal is keeping the mem-

bership up. “We want to see the krewe recycle and younger people join,” he said. Adam, one of the youngest members to be in Triton, was brought up doing Mardi Gras. “Children’s krewes, watching rehearsals, getting dragged to the warehouse,” he laughed. “I’d been going as his [father’s] guest for umpteen years. Doubloons were my favorite thing to catch.” While recruiting younger people is a main focus, the dues are a small part of what Triton does. “The Captain’s job is the most intense,” said Adam. “Paying bills takes about an hour a week and we meet once a month.” Around 120 men are members of Triton and those interested in joining fill out an application. There are no ball tickets to be sold, members simply invite their guests. Prospects are located through whomever invited them, and usually that sponsor serves as a reference. “I can’t remember anyone being rejected,” said Carl. “Membership is open, Triton does not discriminate. The King is a random draw.” Adam has a picture of himself with his wife on his desk, and both agree the women are as much a part of Triton as the men. Wives, daughters, and granddaughters serve on royalty courts. The best part of Triton for Carl is the friendships that developed over nearly four decades, and cites several mem-

Adam Sonnier and his sister Arielle Sonnier enjoying a Triton ball. bers who are too elderly now to do much of the heavy lifting, but they still come to the warehouse. For Adam, it’s that Mardi Gras moment. “I do love when the curtains open, you come out on your float and all the faces are upturned toward you.” “It’s an adrenaline rush you can’t describe.”

2018 Home for the Holidays campaign proceeds distributed $140K distributed to local shelter organizations Home for the Holidays Inc. recently contributed $140,000 to local, shelter-related charitable agencies, proceeds realized from raffle ticket sales during the 2018 campaign. Home for the Holidays is an annual project of the Acadian Home Builders Association and KATC-TV 3 in which AHBA members construct a new, high-end home, raffle it off and donate the proceeds to local non-profit shelter organizations. “Despite the continued uncertainty of the economy, the outpouring of support from the great people in Acadiana never fails. The 2018 campaign ranks among some of our most successful ones with regard to ticket sales. The generosity of our community enables us to continue our mission of providing safe, affordable housing to our neighbors in need and, for that, we are most appreciative,” said Doug Trahan, Home for the Holidays president. This year’s campaign brings the total amount of contributions to $2,213,000 that Home for the Holidays Inc. has been able to distribute to its adopted agencies since the project’s inception 14 years ago. A reception was held Feb. 11 to distribute the proceeds from the 2018 Home for the Holidays campaign to local Acadiana agencies and educational programs. Trahan conducted the ceremony while members of the board of directors presented the monetary donations. Each of

the project’s four adopted agencies: Faith House, Healing House, Lafayette Habitat for Humanity and the St. Michael Center for Veterans received $34,000. Faith House of Acadiana serves an important role in Lafayette by providing protection and aid to abused and battered women and their children. The shelter and its services provide safe housing, food, clothing, health screenings, medications, counseling and legal assistance to help mistreated individuals and their kids escape dangerous situations. Healing House, Hope for Grieving Children provides support and education to children and their caregivers who have experienced the unfortunate death of a loved one. Their facility provides a safe place where these children are able to express their thoughts and feelings in a comfortable atmosphere through interactive play, expressive art work and discussion groups with peers experiencing the same trauma. Lafayette Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to make the American dream of home ownership a reality for low income families in the Acadiana area. The organization builds simple, decent, affordable houses and then lends a no profit, no interest mortgage to a selected family to help them purchase one of the newly built houses at a very low monthly payment. In the 20-plus years Hab-

Acadian Home Builders Association

itat has been operating in Acadiana, they have built over 100 homes for their partner families. St. Michael Center for Veterans is a division of Catholic Services of Acadiana and is an emergency and transitional housing program for homeless veterans. They offer supportive services including substance abuse recovery, education, and employment and housing placement. Proceeds from previous Home for the Holidays campaigns have aided the group in their mission to drastically reduce the number of homeless veterans who are seeking shelter in our community. Also receiving donations of $2,000 each were the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation to be placed within the John “Harry” Hebert Memorial Scholarship Fund and AHBA’s Professional Women in Building to assist the organization with their annual “Building a Better Christmas” efforts. Located in Bayou Tortue Manor subdivision, the 2018 Home for the Holidays was valued at over $480,000 and was built by Lisa & Bill Schoeffler of Schoeffler Built

Homes. The raffle was held and a winner announced during a live KATC-TV 3 broadcast on Dec. 5. The lucky winner, John Richard II, took possession of his home in January. To make a project like Home for the Holidays successful, it takes numerous donors, laborers and behind the scenes volunteers. At the reception, these important individuals and companies were recognized for their generosity. Platinum sponsors, those individuals or companies whose donations exceed $20,000, were recognized for their commitment to the project and Acadiana. Those sponsors included: Bayou Tortue Manor Development, Doug Ashy Building Materials, Home Bank, News Talk 96.5 KPEL FM, Schoeffler Built Homes.

Campaign to launch Sept. 1 The 2019 Home for the Holidays, to be built by Pam & Lee Weaver of W Homes, Inc., will be located in The Reserve at Woodlake Subdivision in Lafayette. The campaign will launch to the public on Sept. 1 when tickets are made available for purchase.

Theater season opens with Que Sera, Giant Monster Staff report The Acadiana Repertory Theatre is opening its 2019 season with the developmental production of Que Sera, Giant Monster by Brad McEntire. The play, which opens Friday, Feb. 15, continues through Feb. 23. This fast-paced comedy is directed by Debbi Ardoin and features company members Steven R. Landry and Erica Jure along with newcomer to the ART stage, Michelle Colon. Charles is having a very rough day. It only gets worse when he runs into an ex who is, herself, having a ridiculously rough day. The giant monster destroying the city doesn’t bode well, either. Performances will be at Cite Des Arts, 109 Vine St., on Feb. 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Feb. 17. Tickets are $15. Tickets can be purchased by calling (337) 291-

1122. Tickets may also be purchased online at acadianarep.org/que-sera-giant-monster or at the box office, starting an hour before the performance. ART was founded in 2009 by Steven Landry and Etienna Wright. The Acadiana Repertory Theatre serves as an incubator where playwrights can develop new work and see that work brought to production. Their website is www.acadianarep.org. Here’s the rest of the 2019 season. Final Flight by Olivia Z. Cote, June 7-15 ; When an asteroid long ago predicted to cause a global mass-extinction suddenly appears in the sky, 17-year-old Gabbi Raleigh is forced to confront the harsh truth of her own mortality. The realization is shared by Gabbi’s estranged aunt Margot, who returns unexpectedly after nine years without contact, determined to be reconciled with her dying younger sister before the end of days. Meanwhile, a therapist haunted by her

troubled past receives a visit from a personal hero in a turn of events that just may set both their souls at rest. The Wooden Heart, by Adam Szymkowicz, Sept. 6-14: Mitch wants to be a carpenter. Heather wants to be a woodcarver. The wolf wants to be an intellectual. Ruby wants to escape the wolf. The woodcutter wants to escape the narrator. A fable-inspired play about love and wood and finding your purpose. Proceed to Highlighted Route by Erica Mann, dates TBA Annabelle Powell has always dreaded Christmas with her parents. Luckily, this year she has the perfect buffer — her good-natured fiancé, Jack. But her defenses are no match for what she finds when she arrives at her family home: the unveiling of a conversational A.I. of her brother, Milo, who was killed in an accident six months earlier. An absurd tragedy, Proceed to Highlighted Route explores grief in the modern age.

Film looks at issues relating to diversions Staff report JEANERETTE — Diversions, a short documentary film produced by Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities will be shown at 6 p.m. on March 27 at the Alex P. Allain Memorial Library, 206 Iberia St., Franklin. Special guest Kerry St. Pe’ will be on hand to help discuss some of the film’s topics. The film looks at the greater Plaquemines community with a look at the science of diversion and the dilemmas it creates. How to spend more time outside Metro Media

metalmart35@mcelroymetal.com

The Environmental Protection Agency says the average person spends 93 percent of his life indoors, with 87 percent of the time inside of a building, and the remaining 6 percent in an automobile. These results indicate that the equivalent of just one half of one day per week is spent outdoors. And people may pay a price for spending so much time indoors. There’s various reasons to believe that being outdoors can be good for a person’s health. The National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School say that, in addition to providing physical benefits, simply spending time in nature in any form can improve mental outlook, boost creativity, elevate mood due to natural light, improve concentration, and reduce stress. A study from the St. Louis University School of Medicine also said that spending time outdoors can help a person sleep better. That’s because natural sunlight can set the body’s internal clock. Despite all of the benefits, many people find it challenging to find opportunities and time. Here are a few ways to enjoy the outdoors that do not require

major commitments. • Bike or walk to work. If you’re close to work, walking or cycling to work is a simple way to spend more time outdoors. If you use public transportation, get off a few stops early to get some exercise and breathe some fresh air. If you drive, choose a parking place that allows you to walk for a few minutes to the office. • Lunch outside. Take your lunch hour outdoors rather than in an indoor cafeteria or restaurant. Office workers are urged to go to a park or green space to give their brains a rest from urban stimuli. • Set strict “no device” times. Schedule a time when devices are disconnected and the entire family enjoys some recreation outdoors. Let kids get back to the basics of bike riding, skating, playing pick-up sports games outside with friends, and all of the activities parents enjoyed as youths. • Dine al fresco. Opt for outdoor seating at a favorite restaurant. • Meet friends at outdoor places. Plan social activities at outdoor venues, such as parks, beaches, town centers, boardwalks, and other areas where everyone can have fun and still be outside.

Parklet’s opening set for Feb. 22 Staff report In conjunction with Downtown Lafayette and One Acadiana, Central Pizza & Bar invites the public to celebrate Downtown Lafayette’s first parklet. A ribbon cutting will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. The event is free. A parklet is a reclaimed area of roadway that is repurposed into a shared public space — a hybrid between a public park and a parking space. The intent is to enhance the streetscape and provide amenities like seating, dining, bike parking, vegetation planting and public art. Providing shared public spaces is a way to bring life to public streets and improve the quality of life in urban areas. More information about parklets in Downtown Lafayette can be found at www.lafayettela.gov/PZD/SiteAssets/Files/Parklet-Design-Manual. pdf To find out how to place a parklet downtown, send a message to info@ downtownlafayette.org.

Get a headstart on spring gardening

l

Gardeners can start preventing weeds and preparing to plant now Metro Media In the winter, many people stare longingly out of the window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes no doubt dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those the early buds and flowers of spring to begin preparing for the upcoming gardening season. • One of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. • While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that

spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check The Farmer’s Almanac or the LSU AgCenter’s website for guidance on when to plant); otherwise, you may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables too soon. • Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to the soil in your particular area to enrich it. • Lawn and garden experts suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in.

METRO MEDIA

Get a jumpstart on spring gardening. Even if it’s too soon to plant what you want, it’s not too soon to repair equipment and clean outdoor areas.

Five things to look for when selecting a lawn service Metro Media Most people want beautiful lawns and well-maintained landscapes, but not every homeowner has the time or ability to do the work themselves. Lawn companies come in all shapes and sizes — from fly-by-night workers with ill-maintained equipment to nationwide franchised companies and everything in between. Finding the right service for your needs may require some homework.

Do some research first Lawn services often are listed in the classified section of local newspapers on their website. People also exchange information about lawn services, including reviews through various internet sites as well. Reading company and product reMETRO MEDIA views on Yelp and Angie’s List can help Lawn care companies are something to consider as the weather warms and spring homeowners make informed decisions. If a worker gets injured companies and individuals working in It’s not the standard to be licensed and on your property or if the mower kicks your neighborhood. Neighbors often are insured, but it is an essential step for a big rock through your storm door, willing to give referrals to the companies finding a business that stands behind you’ll be liable if the company isn’t inthey use. its work and the safety of its employees sured.

Get a written proposal

Be wary of companies that will quote you an offer over the phone without seeing your property in person. Understand which types of services and treatments will be included in the weekly, monthly or annual plan. Discuss the types of fertilizers and herbicides used and whether they fit with your lifestyle and environmental consciousness.

Ask for a contract in writing When you find a business that offers the type of work you need done at the right price, be sure that a contract is worked up and both parties sign it. This protects you as a homeowner and could help you in the long run if guarantees are not met or work is unsatisfactory.

One size may not fit all Landscaping is more than just mowing the lawn. However, some lawn companies may only mow lawns and will plant flowers or perform spring and fall cleanup. If a company cannot fill all of your needs, find one that can; otherwise, you may need to hire specialists in each area of yard maintenance.
