Navigating Carnival BY CHERÉ COEN
Special to The Advocate Lafayette continues to be one of the largest family friendly Mardi Gras celebrations outside of New Orleans. In addition, many krewes offer Carnival balls — some are open to the public — and there are numerous Carnival-related events and the unique Courir de Mardi Gras, or Cajun Mardi Gras run that occurs in the countryside is like nothing throughout the world.
Here’s a primer to help you navigate the Mardi Gras landscape in Acadiana.

Parades for Children Lafayette and surrounding area tout themselves as a family friendly Mardi Gras. A parade specifically geared toward kids is the annual Children’s Parade, which will roll at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2. Another parade that’s fun for children is the Krewe des Chiens Parade, or dog parade, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, on downtown Lafayette streets.
Mardi Gras Day The parade schedule for Mardi Gras, March 5, is: • King Gabriel’s Parade, 10 a.m. • Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival Parade, 1 p.m. • TownSquare Media Independent Parade, 2:30 p.m. • Courir de Mardi Gras — In the countryside surrounding Lafayette, communities celebrate Carnival with the “Courir de Mardi Gras,” or Mardi Gras Run. This rural ritual dates back to France and has been practiced in Louisiana since the earliest days of settlement. Bands of masked and costumed horseback riders roam the countryside “begging” for in-

Special events Vermilionville Living History Museum and Folklife Park presents its annual Courir de Mardi Gras and Mangé: A Community Celebration of Foodways from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. The Basile Mardi Gras Association conducts the traditional country Mardi Gras run, Feu Follet performs in the Performance Center and there will be king cake and capuchin (courir hat) making demonstrations.
Mangé is a new addition to the annual event, feature cooking demos, exhibits, food historians and more. For information, visit www.vermilionville.org/events/ courir-de-mardi-gras. Le Festival de Mardi Gras à Lafayette happens every year with carnival rides, live music, food vendors and more. This year’s festival will be March 1-5 at Cajun Field, which is also the end of the parade route so festival-goers will have a chance to catch a parade.
