Carencro blends history, new growth One of state’s oldest communities attracts new residents, business BY CHERÉ COEN
Special to The Advocate Carencro is considered one of the oldest subdivisions of Lafayette, lying north of Interstate 10 and straddling Interstate 49. But the town’s history dates back centuries. The Attakapas tribe resided in the region and it’s said that European settlers heard an Attakapas legend in which carrion crows feasted on the bones of a mastodon, thus giving the area its name. Another story lends itself to a red-headed buzzard. You be the judge. In the late 1700s, Acadian Arceneauxs and Bergerons acquired land in Carencro upon arriving in the Louisiana colony after being expelled by the British from their home in Canada. They named their new residence Beau Bassin after their Canadian home, a house that’s been relocated to the Vermilionville Historic Village in Lafayette. Today, Carencro is known for its modern Sports Complex, Pelican Park and the North Regional Library, but its history exists in downtown buildings and St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church where more than 100 pews are decorated with Carencro family crests. And the Robert Dafford mural at the Therapy Center on East St. Peter Street depicts early Carencro residents in horse and buggies heading to Mass. Also on East St. Peter Street is Swanky’s Cajun restaurant, located inside a restored 1901 building and serving up everything from poboys and seafood platters to hamburgers and chicken wings. Carencro also offers a wide variety of shopping, from unique boutiques, art galleries and antiques to big box stores and groceries that have recently opened alongside I-49. This blend of history and convenience is what attracts residents to Carencro but the charm remains, said Barbara McConnell, who has lived in Carencro for 30 years.

Today, Carencro straddles Interstate 49, but its history dates back centuries. “I thought Carencro was the best kept secret in Lafayette, but somehow we have been discovered,” she explained. “People are moving here and they’re building homes. We have areas that are not subject to flooding and you can still buy larger tracks of land.” McConnell is excited about the new shopping opportunities afforded residents along I-49, stores such as Lowe’s, Super One grocery and the Walmart Supercenter. Some Lafayette restaurants and food producers such as Don’s Specialty Meats and La Pizzeria, have
opened new locations along the interstate corridor, joining the long-standing Prejean’s, which has been popular with tourists and residents alike for years. “New restaurants and shopping opportunities practically pop up daily it seems,” McConnell said. The eastern-most boundary of Carencro skirts the old Coteau Ridge, created when the Mississippi River flowed through Acadiana thousands of years ago. Because the river’s water poured through the area when glaciers melted up north, natural trenches were made
and parts of Carencro include rolling hills, a unique natural feature to Acadiana. “We haven’t been overbuilt (yet) so there are natural areas of rolling prairieland and hills,” McConnell said. “The Coteau Ridge looks similar to what it was like before western man arrived.” Famous Carencro natives include musician Marc Broussard and New England Patriots football star Kevin Faulk. Spain Alive! festival to celebrate New Iberia’s founding Author from Malaga, Spain, will be guest lecturer
Staff report New Iberia will celebrate the seventh annual El Festival Español de Nueva Iberia on Saturday, April 27. The focus and mission of the festival is to celebrate the 1779 founding of New Iberia by 16 Spanish families from Malaga, Spain. The event helps create an educational and cultural awareness and exchange of food, music, art and history between New Iberia and the Andalusia region of Spain, while recognizing the contributions of the original Spanish settlers to Iberia Parish’s culture. The festival will provide many activities such as Running of the Bulls 5K Race, arts and crafts, a “Paella, Tapas, Jambalaya and Spanish Desserts Competition,” genealogy display, a parade, lots and lots of different cultural music and a children’s tent filled with activities to celebrate this fun, family oriented day. The host agencies are La Asociación Española de Nueva Iberia and the city
of New Iberia. This year they are also partnering with Cycle Zydeco as many cyclers will be in town on festival day. “The committee selected Spain Alive – Happy Birthday New Iberia as this year’s festival theme to help create an awareness that the Spanish culture and heritage of our great city is very much alive in 2019 along with the many other cultures that make New Iberia the great city it is today,” said Festival Chairman Ebrar Reaux. The guest lecturer will be Jose Manuel deMolina, author and researcher from Malaga, Spain, who will attend the festival and serve as the Grand Marshal of the Festival Walking Parade. Friends of library book sale set for March 28 to 30
The Friends of the Lafayette Parish Public Library is preparing for its next sale at the Heymann Convention Center in March. Friends Night is Wednesday, March 27, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The sale is open to the public on Thursday, March 28, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.; Friday, March 29, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; and Saturday, March 30, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Gently used hardcover and paperback books are sold by the inch. In preparation, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office will assist with moving 550 to 600 boxes of books to the sale site. The Friends are grateful for the continuing flow of book donations at the library’s working warehouse at 211 E. Pinhook. Only gently used books are accepted. They do not accept encyclopedias, magazines, or VHS tapes. If you need help with your donations or need a donation form, volunteers are at the warehouse from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays.

Origins of leprechauns

The tricolor flag. A pint of Guinness. Bagpipes. All of these tangible things are symbols of St. Patrick’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint of Ireland every year on March 17. Yet, another symbol of Irish culture is more elusive. Leprechaun imagery is ubiquitous during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, yet many know little about these mythical creatures or the origins of the myth. Widely depicted today as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lœ Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorp‡n,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,”

Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun. Some historians believe the myth of the leprechaun has origins in ancient Ireland, when people believed the tiny creatures were among the various inhabitants of fairy forts and fairy rings throughout the Emerald Isle. Another take on the source of the leprechaun myth is that these tiny creatures were modern incarnations of the Euro-Celtic god Lugh, who was the sun god as well as the pa-
tron of arts and crafts. Manuscripts from the 12th to 15th centuries suggest leprechauns lived underwater and were not all male. In fact, the resource Ancient-Origins.net says female leprechauns were depicted during this time as figures devoted to luring human men away for various adventures. While in the 21st century, leprechauns always wear green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red. The images of leprechauns can be seen everywhere on and around St. Patrick’s Day, and those images have evolved considerably over the centuries.

Today, dance studios around the world specialize in various types of Irish dance. There are a number of notable styles of Irish dance, each boasting its own unique components.
Stepdancing Irish stepdance is a solo dance, although it can be performed by several soloists in unison. It is characterized by a generally stiff, immobile upper body and quick, precise movements of the feet. It is among the most common dances performed in a competition called a Feis.
