Taking Care of Business The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce helps the Latin Community do just that

Much of the nation has had its attention riveted on Latinos in recent weeks. They’ve been Mayra Pineda’s focus for decades. Originally from Honduras, Pineda is a businesswoman and the president and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, where over the years, she has worked tirelessly to develop long-term business relationships between Louisiana, the Hispanic community, and Latin America. A former Consul General of Hondu- Mayra Pineda ras in New Orleans, she’s worked with the community in different capacities. “I’ve had to connect with private and public sectors and owned my own business for 25 years,” she said. “Our mission is to build capacity—education, helping connect opportunities and access to capital. We are the vehicle that can help them do that.” “We also connect business owners or those working to reach out to the Hispanic business community.” Although headquartered in New Orleans, Lafayette has not gone unnoticed. “Since 3 years, we’ve started doing events in Lafayette, and we started a partnership with One Acadiana to participate in our initiatives. I believe a lot in collaboration.” Recently, HCCL hosted two events, a networking event and a seminar at a local restaurant to listen to the community and assess the needs. They also had an

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana seeks to unite both Hispanic and non-Hispanic communities exhibit table at the recent Latin Music Festival in Lafayette. “The Hispanic Chamber has been in existence since 1984, a long time, and presently we have 523 members as of my last count—and counting.” Pineda says HCCL is growing as it adds new programming. She is particularly proud of the Workforce and Development Training Center and English as a second language, computer literacy, and business management courses. Her involvement spans over 20 years as a board member and chairman, and since 2013 as director, president, and CEO. Her mission is one not only for the Hispanic community, but for the community at large, as a conduit for traditional American businesses to the fastest growing minority population in the United States. “Being the Hispanic Chamber addresses more specific needs within the community for both Hispanics and non-Hispanics,” said Pineda. “Our bilingual center makes them feel more comfortable where their language is spoken. We have members at all levels, from CEOs to corner shops, we advocate for public issues, city halls, anything that requires an official voice.” “We get criticized sometimes because some of our programs are in English,” she laughed. Lidice Ortiz Manor is evidence of what membership can accomplish. Manor

owns her own business, Momentous Event Planners in Lafayette, and serves as HCCL’s Lafayette ambassador. “Since I started with the business, I told them we need some representation in Lafayette,” she said. “If we Lidice Ortiz Manor train, educate, and become a workforce, it improves the economy locally.” Manor not only plans weddings and quinceaneras, but currently helps Hispanic businesses brand themselves, as she did with Cactus Grill. She has plans to do corporate trade shows and says HCCL has personally connected her to other businesses both in New Orleans and elsewhere. Puerto Rican designer Raoul Blanco has owned his own business in California, New Orleans, Lafayette, and now Arizona, which also has a Hispanic Chamber. “Hispanic Chambers should be a link to unite all Spanish-speaking cultures to make their voice stronger, welcoming and uniting Latinos and Hispanics,” said Blanco. “As of now, these two are kind of divided. Mostly each one’s pride.” In addition to connecting communi-

Pineda is also the National U.S. Hispanic Chamber representative, and represents not only Louisiana, but Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. She does this on a shoestring, with only a two person staff, a part-time intern, and the rest volunteers. “We are very busy planning 2019 and proud of our signature events, our annual town hall meeting, round table meeting, trade show gala, and our seminars in the Lafayette area on business basics and finances,” she said. Also on the agenda is a relationship with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and planning an event for March next year. “We go from one event to another.”

Prepare your home for winter Take steps now to keep your home a warm, safe shelter for cold weather Colder temperatures can take a big toll on your home. Severe winter storms can also knock out heat, power and other services to your home. That’s why it’s important to take a few steps now to prepare your home for the changing weather ahead. Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help you make sure your home is the best shelter possible for you and your family during the colder months ahead. • Ensure you are keeping out outside air and moisture. Insulate walls and attics, caulk and weather-strip doors and windows, and install storm windows. • Clear rain gutters so they don’t fill with water that could freeze and cause damage to the roof due to the added weight. • Trim tree branches that could potentially fall on your home during a storm. Hiring a professional is strongly advised, especially if any branches are near power lines. • Have your heating equipment

But doing so can increase the risk of electric shock, house fire or carbon monoxide poisoning if the necessary safety precautions are not taken: • Keep fire extinguishers around the home, and make sure all family members know how to use them. • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning device inside your home, garage, basement, crawl space or any partially enclosed area. And do not place the unit near a door, window or vent where carbon monoxide could seep indoors. • Space heaters should only be placed on a level surface and away from heavy foot traffic when in use, especially if pets or small children are nearby. It’s best to have space heaters that automatically turn off when a room reaches the desired temperature or in the event it is tipped over.
