Trained up in families’tradition Annual bonfire taking shape

BY KATE STEVENS

Special to The Advocate

GONZALES — As the calendar turns from November to December and turkeys make way for holly and Santa Claus, the Laiche and Duplessis families know where to find their young men. They’ll be outside working on the bonfire. Constructing a special bonfire on family property on La. 74 and setting it ablaze before revelers on New Year’s Eve is a tradition the men have continued for 13 years to honor the memory of slain family member Luke Villar. Villar, 18, was killed during a 2001 armed robbery in St.

Amant. The families always had burned brush piles and even built tepee-style bonfires to usher in the new year, but after Villar died, the men decided during a Thanksgiving camping trip to honor him with a special bonfire, said Courtney Laiche, Villar’s cousin. “He liked bonfires, and he liked family,” Laiche said of Villar. “It’s just a good way to get together and stay united.” The men discuss what to build over the Thanksgiving holiday and, during the first weekend in December, haul willow trees from friends’ property along the Mississippi River to 28 acres belonging to Laiche’s parents. Every weekend through December is taken to construct and perfect each year’s bonfire, Laiche said. The bonfires are usually mod-

eled after something taking place in current events. Last year, the families burned a 28foot space shuttle in honor of the end of NASA’s space shuttle program. They constructed and burned a fleur-de-lis when the Saints went to the Super Bowl in 2009. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, they built a Blackhawk helicopter after watching them fly between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Other years, the men have built a tank and the south end zone of Tiger Stadium. This year, ideas were more difficult to come by, so when a locomotive engine was suggested, the men all agreed. “We’re kind of winging it this year,” Laiche said. On the Saturday before

Monson, who moved from Plaquemine to Ascension Parish in 2000 to live near her daughter, was invited to join the club in 2006 by member Loretta Sepligene. Monson became president in 2013 and serves on committees for the yearbook, awards and school gardens. Monson said she has been interested in gardening all her

life. At 5, her idea of play was transplanting weed flowers into rows like tiny crops, she said. Today, flowerbeds surround her house and line the perimeter of her yard. Much of her landscape came from cuttings from plants her parents grew in the yard where she was raised. She grows satsumsa, Meyer’s lemons, Bradford pears, Ce-

leste figs and Japanese plums. Through the year, her garden boasts blooms of roses, gardenias, bottlebrush, candelabra, bridal wreath, hibiscus, irises, daylilies and a variety of spring bulbs. Island plantings of crape myrtle laden with Spanish moss accent the front and rear lawn areas. Monson said her favorite plants are the ones people give her from their own gardens.

Sweet potato seed orders available through Jan. 19 Advocate staff report Residents interested in growing sweet potatoes can order seed potatoes from the Ascension Parish Extension Office through Jan. 19. As a service to Louisiana residents, the LSU Agricultural Center’s Sweet Potato Research Station produces foundation sweet potato seed annually. These seed potatoes are to be bedded in the row to produce “slips or cuttings, which are then transplanted to the field to produce the crop, Craig Roussel, horticulture agent for Ascension and St. James parishes, said in a news release This year, eight varieties will be available for purchase; however, some varieties have limited availability. All varieties are certified to be free of viruses. The varieties available are Beauregard B-63, Beauregard B-14, Evangeline, O’ Henry, Hernandez, Porto Rico, Jewel and HeartoGold. Beauregard B-63 was selected in Louisiana. It is well adapted to local soil types and has a light rose-colored skin, which fades slightly in storage, and a moderately deep orange flesh, the release said. Beauregard B-14 was select-

ed in North Carolina. It tends to make shorter roots than B-63 when grown in the sandy soils of North Carolina. However, it tends to be a little short and blocky when grown in Louisiana’s silt loam soils, especially if the soil becomes somewhat compacted. Evangeline was released from the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station in 2007. Its skin color is slightly redder than Beauregard and flesh color is a vivid, bright orange. Evangeline is similar to Beauregard in production characteristics and has been a consistent performer in research trials, the release said. Yield potential is comparable to Beauregard, but it does not produce as many jumbos. O’Henry was a mutation selected from Beauregard. It has a cream-colored skin and white flesh, and has disease resistance similar to Beauregard. Hernandez is a late-maturing variety, and has a red skin color and deep orange flesh. Porto Rico has a copper skin color and a salmon-colored flesh. Jewel was released from North Carolina Agricultural Research Service and has a copper skin color and orange flesh.

HeartoGold is an old variety that was released from the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station in 1947. It has a flesh-colored skin and a deep orange flesh. A description and pictures of these and other varieties can be found at tinyurl.com/ o6twyaw. The top two varieties recommended for the area are Beauregard B-63 and Evangeline, Roussel said. The cost of a 40-pound box of seed potatoes is $16.50 for Beauregard (B-63 and B-14), $18.50 for Evangeline and $25 for all other varieties. Ordering deadline is noon Jan. 19. To order, call the Ascension Parish Extension Office at (225) 621-5799.

Continued from page 1G Christmas, Laiche, Villar’s brother Lance Villar, Chad and Caleb Duplessis, and family friend Mark Blackwell braved the cold temperatures to work on the locomotive engine and tender car measuring nearly 10 feet tall and 40 feet long. Laiche said the men will spend all their spare time until the bonfire is complete, usually on New Year’s Eve. “We thrive under pressure when the game’s on the line,” Chad Duplessis said. The men will light the bonfire at 8 p.m. Wednesday and set off fireworks at midnight. People ask them how they can burn their masterpiece once it’s completed, but Laiche said, “That’s what we build it for.” The bonfire will burn until daylight and remain hot for two or three days, Laiche said. In 13 years, there have been only two injuries, including a smashed finger and an accident with a chain saw. Small arguments are more common, Laiche said. “Feelings get hurt all the time, but you get over that,” Laiche said. No alcohol is allowed during construction because there are five chain saws typically running, Laiche said. Safety is important to the men. “We try to design it so we know how it is going to burn and how

BASF presented a $5,000 donation to Ascension Parish’s high school robotics team, Robot Ascension, earlier this month to help the team prepare for the national For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology robotics competition in 2015. The donation is part of BASF’s ongoing effort to promote and improve science, technology, engineering and math education in schools, a news release said. It is the second year BASF has supported Robot Ascension, the release said. Along with the donation, employees from BASF’s Geismar site serve as mentors to the East Ascension, Dutchtown and St. Amant high school students taking part in the team. Computer science teacher Phillip Blanchard leads the team. BASF also supports a juniorlevel robotics team for students in sixth through eighth grades at Central Middle School in Ascension Parish. “Robotics is an exciting field that challenges students to combine academics and creativity in team projects that have a direct link to real-world industry applications,” said Tom Yura, senior vice president and manager of the BASF

site in Geismar. “This is a great example of how industry can support STEM education and inspire the next generation of scientists, researchers, inventors and innovators.” FIRST is a multinational nonprofit organization that works to promote science, technology, engineering and math. The FIRST program provides teens with the opportunity to explore science in competition against thousands of other students. Every year, the teams receive new challenges to design and build a robot to compete with other schools. In addition to demonstrating proficiency in science and math, the team members perform community services, mentor new teams and act as ambassadors for the program. Winning teams can qualify for nearly $10 million in college scholarships. “Through BASF’s continued support of STEM education in our schools, our students have the opportunity to gain handson experience that can prepare them for successful careers,” Ascension Parish Superintendent Patrice Pujol said. “It is through the generous support of our business partners like BASF that help to make Ascension Parish public schools one of the top-rated school systems in the state of Louisiana.”

Gonzales Primary students visit zoo

Students in Moquita Winey’s prekindergarten class at Gonzales Primary School recently visited Audubon Zoo in New Orleans as part of a field trip. Winey said students were able to identify different varieties and characteristics of zoo animals and learn about a zoo environment and the job of a zookeeper. ‘After learning about the zoo animals, this was a great way to provide our students with that hands-on experience,’ she said. Stopping for a photograph at the zoo are, from left, student Malik Irvin, paraprofessional Alishia Lawrence and student Tiana Magee.

Anyone ready for a‘bowl’game? No, not a football bowl game. Actually, I’m talking about a bowling program in Ascension high schools. Kyle Manton was an active bowler in leagues in the Baton Rouge area who switched over to a league at Premier Lanes when it opened in Ascension parish three years ago. Bowling teams had been attempted in the past for area high schools but logistically could not be sustained because of the distance to travel for practices. The idea soon faded away, only to be a distant memory in the minds of those who gave it a try. Enter Kyle Manton and his idea of starting a team at St. Amant. After getting an enthusiastic OK from the principal and athletic director, Manton found out much needed information from schools in Baton Rouge and got the bowling ball rolling. In 2015, the St. Amant Gators, the Dutchtown Griffins and the East Ascension Spartans all will be competing in boys and girls bowling districts for the second year. “Last year was our inaugu-

Wildlife and Fisheries had to seek a law with a stipulation of how close a person could get to the nest so as not to harass the pair and make the birds leave. Over those 35 years, the numbers of bald eagles nesting in Louisiana grew exponentially. In 1972, only six active nests were reported in Louisiana. By 2008, the bald eagle was removed from the federal endangered species list due to recovered populations. In 2008, Louisiana maintained 387 active nests that produced 530 fledglings. The Amite/Blind River basin has plenty of those active nests, and there is one in Flat Lake, not far from my house. The pair has returned already this fall and probably has laid their eggs already. Fish are a main part of their diet, so you’ll always find them nested near or on the water. With a good eye, one could see them, but you have to look close. When a large bird catches my eye, it’s usually a buzzard, and it would be easy to take your eyes away.

Majestic bird

I recently spotted this eagle on Flat Lake, not far from my home. It’s worth the effort to take a little time because one time you’ll see a bright, white head or tail. Then your breath gets taken away. Look for the eagles, we have more here than you might

think. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate. He can be contacted at reelman@eatel.net or ascension@theadvocate.com.
