Learn about the Holocaust survival story of Siggy Boraks during a 6:30 p.m. talk Thursday at the Ascension Parish Library in Dutchtown. Mandy Perret, an English language arts teacher and fellow for the Institute of Holocaust Education at Tulane University, will share the life story of the struggle and survival of Boraks under Adolf Hitler’s reign. Students, business volunteers and residents raise the money needed to buy the toys and gifts, which were handed out Saturday in Gonzales and Donaldsonville. Many area groups donate toys and items for the program, Deputy Janet Fontenot said. Parents apply for the program and provide wish lists. It takes weeks of planning and countless hours of work to prepare for the giveaways. The shopping night has become a tradition for many families and groups that have taken part for years. Since its inception, the award has been given in her honor to the “association member who has most exemplified the call of volunteerism and service to the Jambalaya Festival and who has shown a great dedication to its mission,” a news release from the group said. Taillon has been involved with the festival for more than 15 years, serving on numerous committees and working nearly every booth at the festival. Will chasing “hot” investments improve my returns?
Investors tend to convince themselves that recent investment performance represents the future. The problem with chasing today's investment options is that by the time you hear about the latest “hot” performers, you may have already missed out on all or most of the opportunity to participate in the price appreciation. Chasing past winners can also lead to overtrading too often increasing the chance you'll buy high and sell low. One potential solution: work with a financial advisor. In fact, some have found that investors who work with a financial advisor tend to hold on to their investments longer and realize better returns than do-it-yourselfers.
AUTOMOTIVE TIRES, SERVIcES, & AccESSORIES
Q: A: Michael W. Patterson, CFP®
Can you recycle tires??
Yes, in fact Americans recycle around 290 million tires a year. One of the most popular ways to recycle tires is by grinding them up and adding the pieces to asphalt for roads, race tracks and playgrounds. When we use rubber-modified asphalt, it increases the pavement life without needing maintenance and also prevents early cracking. Some other uses of recycled tires go to boat bumpers, carpet padding and insulation. If you need new tires, recycle your old ones and visit Skid Mark’s Tire Pros!

Q: A:
Often consumers do not understand and/or not explained the difference in leather made upholstered products.
Full or 100% top grain leather is the finest and best wearing option. Leather/vinyl is popular. The item is manufactured with high quality top grain leather in all sitting and wear areas with matching bonded leather or vinyl sides and backs. Bonded leather is relatively new and is leather scraps manufactured in the polyurethane vinyl. Most often the blend is 17% leather-83% vinyl, but there are variations of the actual blend percentages. 100% Polyurethane vinyl is the lowest priced option.

Murray Walker and volunteers with the Donaldsonville High School Alumni Association are making sure Donaldsonville has a Christmas parade this year. “Nobody was going to do it, so we decided to step in,” Walker said Monday. The parade rolls at 2 p.m. Saturday, starting at the ball park on Church Street, rolling down Marchand Drive to Railroad Avenue and ending in Crescent Park. For the past few years, other area volunteers and groups have hosted the parade, but this year’s parade was in jeopardy of not happening until, Walker said, “I knew I had to step up.” “I love my community so I’m doing what it take to make this parade happen,” he said. On Monday, he had 10 float entries and a few marching units signed up and two groups on board to host a toy giveaway in the park. Louisiana Rider from Alexandria and Street Legal Riders agreed to donate toys for a party after the parade. “I’m excited ... because it’s all coming together,” he said.

Advocate staff report Members of the East Ascension Rotary Club warmed up their voices and got in the Christmas Spirit on Dec. 2 as they caroled for a cause. The Rotarians, joined by area schoolchildren, visited neighborhoods to sing Christmas carols to families in exchange for new, unwrapped gifts, which were then donated to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office Christmas Crusade for Children, a news release from the club said. “This is always a fun way for us to contribute to a worthy cause and get in the spirit of Christmas all at the same time,” East Ascension Rotary President Bridget Hanna said. “We want to thank all of the families that contributed gifts or donations this year.”

community/schools FFA members attend leadership conferences Advocate staff report Six members of the East Ascension FFA chapter attended national leadership conferences recently in Lafayette. Students from FFA chapters across Louisiana attended the 212 Degrees and 360 Degrees Leadership Conferences held Dec. 5-6. The conferences are an activity of the National FFA Organization made possible by title sponsor Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, an FFA release said. East Ascension students Daniel Stover, Caitlin Jacque, Steven Jackson, Donquell Saylor, Kevin Caster and Shawn Badeaux attended the conferences. The 212 Degrees conference focused on taking students to the boiling point of leadership, the release said. New East Ascension FFA agriscience teacher and FFA sponsor Kiesha G. Nall called
the conferences a great opportunity for her students. “At 211 degrees, water is extremely hot, but just one more degree gets us to the next level, the release said. The two-day 212 Degrees Leadership Conference focused on student development and helps FFA members become aware of their passions and virtues. FFA members attended sessions on discovering their passions, making positive decisions, setting SMART goals and taking steps towards selfimprovement. The 360 Degrees event takes students full circle in terms of chapter leadership, the release said. The two-day 360 Degrees Photo provided by KIESHA G. Continued from page 1G Approximately $25,000 was spent on purchases, Bacala said. After items were bagged, they were taken to be matched with bags of gifts contributed by other organizations. Outside the store, bags were matched through a coding system, divided by city, family and child, Bacala said. The Marine Bikes for Tikes program donated 150 new and refurbished bicycles. Inmates from Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola donated refurbished bikes and made hand-crafted wooden toys and jewelry boxes and jewelry to be given to children this Christmas, Bacala said. “There might be $40,000 total value of gifts being given, Bacala said. “We have thousands of gifts, Fontenot said. This year alone, Donaldsonville Glass contributed $1,500, and Marine Bikes for Tikes raised $7,000. Rubicon provided $500, as well as gifts for 40 children, and Wal-Mart gave $2,500, Fontenot said. Students from Lake Elementary School also helped distribute gifts on Saturday, St. Pierre said. Student Sophie Smith, 11, said of the Christmas Crusade for Children, it “gives people

It’s good to have something to open. Since the Christmas Crusade for Children began more 20 years ago, thousands of children have benefited each Christmas, Bacala said. “We confirm that these children are truly disadvantaged, Bacala said. Hudson said approximately 685 children from nearly 340 families received gifts this year. “It does put a smile on your face when you see children receive a gift, Bacala said. Wal-Mart employee Josie Young called the program “the most marvelous idea that they could come up with. “That shows that there is still peace somewhere in this world, Young said. “It helps the fortunate think of the less fortunate in such a busy season.

Gators soccer team harnesses abilities
Soccer season is well underway, and teams are getting ready for the Christmas break. I got a chance to talk with the St. Amant Gators boys coach, Adrian Garcia, about this years’ team. Garcia made his way here via Houma in an effort to move his family to the Ascension Parish area and took a job as assistant coach for the soccer team at St. Amant. Due to the head coach leaving, Garcia got the opportunity to take the reins and has made good use of his time so far. “We have a very young team but a very talented team. My thoughts at the beginning of the season were, if we can harness all this ability in the right direction, we could compete for district and even state.” Last year’s freshman phenom Briggs Bourgeois is leading the team this year as a sophomore. Oh, by the way, in his spare time, Bourgeois is an outstanding kicker on the football team and plays baseball. There’s another freshman, Hector Rodriguez, who will help the team for three more years, and junior Trey Cutrer plays the role of leader. “I am very pleased about the way the squad has gelled together; we’re playing at a high-

ly competitive rate,” Garcia said. “I’m looking forward to the finish line of this season.”
Soccer schedules

Hunters give back
The Christmas season is well underway. This time of year is about giving back and showing goodwill toward others. The hunters from Ascension parish have an opportunity to give to the less fortunate in a unique way. Deer hunting is in full swing, and hunters can heed the call to give by donating part and sometimes all of their harvest to families in need this holiday season. In 1994, a group of local hunters gathered to discuss sharing the game and fish they harvested each year with the needy in the Greater Baton Rouge area. The hunters contacted the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and the donations that first year were given to its dining hall. The response from hunters was so great that the dining room’s storage was soon pushed to the limits, and help was enlisted from the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. For families struggling with food access, protein can be the
most expensive and hard-tocome-by food source. That’s where hunters come in. This holiday season, Hunters for the Hungry is calling on the hunting community once again to help bring vital nutrients to those who need it most during the harsh, colder months of the year. Hunters interested in donating part or all of their harvest after a day in the field can bring their field-dressed deer to any processor in the Hunters for the Hungry network. To view the network of processors, visit hunters4hungry louisiana.org. Donated deer are processed at no cost to the hunter, and all donations are tax-deductible. Hunters can keep the more desirable cuts of meat, such as the tenderloin and back strap, and then donate the rest of the deer to be ground and used in recipes like spaghetti, casseroles and sausage. The donated protein is routed to area food banks and local charities that directly serve those in need. Around the holidays, food is never merely a matter of nutrition. Food is about family and belonging. The mission of Hunters for the Hungry is not only to help feed the hungry,

This is one of almost two dozen crabs I caught Friday while roadside fishing in Delacroix; it’s a pretty big one, at that. but also to welcome those less fortunate into the extended family of the hunting community during the holidays. To learn more about its work, visit the website or call (225) 765-2860.
Crabbing in Delacroix
I got an opportunity to slip away last Friday and made a quick trip to Delacroix for a little fishing on the side of the road. No boat this time. I caught almost two dozen
crabs that made for a great boil, five really nice bass as an added bonus along with watching a bald eagle for an hour or so. There’s no place quite like Louisiana for escapades in the outdoors. Get out and enjoy some. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate. He can be contacted at reelman@eatel.net or ascension@theadvocate.com.
