City Council approves building funds $44,700 allotted for new public works complex

The Ascension Parish Council approved the move at its Oct. 16 council meeting in Gonzales after Parish President Tommy Martinez explained that several government buildings would be used as polling places throughout Ascension Parish.

Special to The Advocate

DONALDSONVILLE — City Councilmen voted Tuesday to move $44,700 in disaster relief grant funding to assist in building a new Ascension Parish Government public works complex on the west bank. The funds are part of a larger $1 million Community Development Block Grant for renovations in areas affected by hur-

ricanes Gustav and Ike. Funds from the grant were originally divided to cover construction of the west bank public works building and the Lemann Center improvements, as well as improvements to the city’s sewer system, Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr. said. While the sewer work has been completed, higher-thanexpected estimates left a lack of funding for the public works building project, Sullivan said.

The vote removes the Lemann Center project from the plan and shifts remaining funds to the public works building project. “The $44,700 is how much is remaining from the funds, Sullivan told the council, adding that the money will cover overrun and construction of a fence around the site. The mayor said the Thibaut family, which sold the property to the city, required a fence

around the facility. The city is helping with the costs of building the parish facility as part of a previous land swap agreement. The new public works building, located on Thibaut Drive, should be completed by the end of the week, parish grants coordinator Martha Collins told the council. “The city agreed to handle construction of the parking lot, Collins said. “We’re going to wait until that’s done to call the Fire Marshal’s Office for final inspection.

Collins said the public hearing was required, because use of state funds were being shifted. No one spoke for or against the proposal during the public hearing. In other business, the council voted to make its city trick-ortreat hours from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday The council had originally voted to hold local trick-ortreat hours on Thursday. The change comes to keep in line with the times set by parish government, Sullivan said.

High schools take home honors at marching band competition Advocate staff report East Ascension High School’s Pride of EA won the best in class award Saturday at Dutchtown High School’s 10th annual Dutchtown Marching Band Competition. More than 3,000 people attended the competition, which featured the halftime performances of 18 bands, including the showstopping Spirit of Northwestern Demon marching band. Ascension Parish bands earned high marks, with East Ascension earning all 1s, as well as best in class for percussion and best in class overall, and St. Amant earning two 1s and a 2, as well as best in class for auxiliary and second place for best in class overall. Because Dutchtown Sound hosted the event, the band did not compete but performed its “Picture This halftime show, complete with picture frame props and dynamic choreography. Parkway High School, of Bossier City, took the top prize, first place in best in class and grand champion of the entire competition. “This is the 10th time we’ve hosted this festival, and we are very pleased with the turnout of supporters, participation of the bands and the results of their accomplishments, said Sheily Bell, Dutchtown High School band director and festival organizer. “The all-day event gave bands from all over the state a chance to network, show their skills and take home honors. We are proud of everyone who participated. Beginning at 1:30 p.m., the competition started with the single-A class bands and worked its way up to the AAAA class bands before Dutchtown Sound performed and Northwestern State University closed out the night. The college band brought volume, spelled out “demon in formation and concluded its performance around 8 p.m. with a blaring send-off from the sidelines mere feet away from the stands, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd. Bell said she looks forward to hosting the festival again next year. For now, Dutchtown Sound is gearing up to compete at the Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands competition, the largest of its kind, on Nov. 8 at University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Cajun Field.

Former Tiger Thomas visits St. Amant Middle Former LSU basketball player Tyrus Thomas visited St. Amant Middle School Oct. 16 to talk to eighth-graders about respect and leadership. Thomas said he was raised by his grandmother and mother and spent a lot of time alone. He said he was faced with many decisions early on, many not easy, but his decisions allowed him to be successful in life. “Everyone should want to empower someone else, he said. Thomas started a nonprofit organization to help children do better academically and to provide character building. Thomas played for the LSU Tigers as a starting power forward and was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2006. Thomas’ professional career included seasons with the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets. “Be respectful to get respect. Empower your peers and do good. When you do those things, success will come, he said in closing.
