Children’s Choir enrolling now The award-winning Livingston Parish Children’s Choir is now enrolling singers for the spring semester, choir officials said.

The Livingston Parish Children’s Choir has two treble choirs: its Apprentice Choir for children in grades kindergarten through third grade, and the Chorus for youths in third through ninth grades. Both choirs meet at New Covenant Church, 215 Florida Ave. S.E., Denham Springs. The Apprentice Choir meets between 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. and the Chorus meets from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

The Livingston Parish Children’s Choir will host its 17th annual choir camp for students in kindergarten through fifth grades from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 5-8 at First Baptist Church, 308 N. Construction is set to begin on the long-awaited lighting of La. 22 from Interstate 55 west to the Natalbany River Bridge, which was designed through the parish’s Road Lighting District.

Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess said project specifications call for 5.03 miles of new lighting.

Approximately 64 existing utility poles and 184 new utility poles will be used to install the 248 lights along La. 22.

The project is the first of a three-phase project to complete lighting along state roadways inside the lighting district.

Parish Councilman Bobby Cortez said the three phases of work — lighting areas along La. 22, Pumpkin Center Road and the I-55 Service Road — proved challenging.

Cortez, who represents the District 10 area, said officials were well into the lighting project when state regulations changed. “To put up lights on a state highway, you have to do a study on it first,� Cortez said, noting that the study “costs a good many thousands of dollars.

Cortez said the new lights will create uniform illumination throughout the roadway. “State guidelines say you must have the same amount of light all the way through, so the lights are placed where light meets light,� Cortez said.

Tangipahoa Parish’s Director of Finance Jeff McNeely said that was the biggest challenge: making sure the lights are consistent. According to the Department of Transportation and

Increased call volume leads to need for new Albany fire station Advocate staff report Call volume has increased almost fivefold since Livingston Parish Fire Prevention District No. 1 in Albany began handling emergency medical response calls, according to a news release from the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority.

With the additional call volume, officials with the Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 determined they needed a larger, more modern and better-equipped fire station.

The fire department is scheduled to move into its new building in January.

Demolition of the original

fire station, built in 1968, began in June. The $250,000 project, which is made possible, in part, by a $33,000 zero-interest loan through the LPFA grant, should help improve response time and efficiency for this growing department, said Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 Chief Joe Foster in the release.

The former Hammond firefighter said the expansion comes not a moment too soon.

When Foster assumed the chief position in 2013, the fire district board asked him to steer the department to serve more of the area’s medical service needs.

“Our board saw a need, and

we responded. Our department handled 196 incidents in 2012.

Our EMS program started in May of 2013, and call volume increased to 638 calls. We expect to top 1,000 calls this year,” Foster said. Firefighters are now required to have emergency medical responder certification, as well.

“This new station speaks volumes about our community’s faith in its fire department and the role the fire station plays in the community,” he said. “Also, having a modern station will do so much for our recruitment.

Although we are now able to hire some contract firefighters, our department still relies

on our volunteers.

“Our crew is excited about the new station. Maybe it’s everything firefighters experience together, but fire departments are families; that’s part of the attraction. Now, we can give our fire department family a better working and living environment so they can more adequately and safely do their jobs.”

The new station will have almost double the space of the original, at 5,000 square feet.

It will accommodate four firetrucks instead of three and will include firemen’s quarters, a day room, kitchen, locker rooms, showers, two offices and

Options program gets $21,400 boost Advocate staff report The weaving program for Options — a private nonprofit agency located in Hammond providing services for people with developmental disabilities — received a big boost for its expansion efforts, thanks to Middendorf ’s Manchac Run. The restaurant’s owners, Horst and Karen Pfeifer, hosted a luncheon on Dec. 4 for sponsors and organizers of the event and presented Options with a check for $21,400; $11,400 of that was raised by sponsors and race participants, a news release from Options said. Middendorf’s donated an additional $10,000. “It was an easy decision to donate to Options,“ said Karen Pfeifer, Middendorf’s owner and head of the Options program. “My friends and I volunteer every Monday and Tuesday to guide people with disabilities in the art of weaving, and we need funds for the program to grow. Now, we’re on our way to expand the program from just enrichment to another Options business that provides meaningful work for

North Oaks doctor named SALTY OYSTERS Physician of the Year Advocate staff report Dr. Jay Smith has received the 2014 North Oaks Health System Physician of the Year Award for exceptional service to others, leadership, performance excellence and his dedication to the community, according to a news release from North Oaks Health System.

Smith is North Oaks Medical Center’s Emergency Services medical director and a 24-year veteran of the North Oaks Medical staff, the release said.

Nominations praised Smith’s care and concern for his patients and the respectful working relationship he fosters with the entire hospital Smith staff. Nominations also commended his focus on providing quality care and his community service at North Oaks Sports Medicine student-athlete screening events through the years.

Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Smith is the department chairman and a past vice chairman for Emergency Services on the hospital’s Medical Executive Committee. He was North Oaks Medical Center’s chief of staff in 1998, and he has contributed as a member of the Emergency Department Steering and Bylaws Committees numerous terms during his career.

The Louisiana Hospital Association appointed Smith to the Louisiana Emergency Response Network’s Regional Commission for Region 9. He represents hospital service district facilities and is the commission’s vice chairman.

He also has been recognized by New Orleans Magazine as one of Louisiana’s “Top Doctors.�

SLU professor reveals history behind famous carols Advocate staff report

Southeastern Louisiana University communications professor Joseph Burns researched the history of Christmas carols thoroughly for a presentation he made recently at the university’s annual Fanfare festival, a fall celebration of the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Burns said many people can get the wrong idea by going solely according to the title or lyrics. For example, in “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” he singles out the comma placement.

“It has nothing to do with happy, merry men. It was first published in the mid-1700s and is referenced in Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol,’ ” said Burns, who produces the weekly radio show “Rock School” on the university’s station, KSLUFM. “The word ‘merry’ means strong or mighty, as in ‘merry old England,’ and the word ‘rest’ means to keep or make. So the title translates to ‘God keep you mighty, gentlemen,’ and refers to the lamplighters and additional men hired to patrol during the holidays.”

“You may sing ‘We Three Kings,’ but you should recog-

nize that in Matthew 2:1-12 there are no references to the number three, kings, the Orient or their names,” Burns said.

Mater Dolorosa School class gets dictionaries Advocate staff report Tangipahoa Volunteers for Family and Community Busy Bees, an all-volunteer arm of the LSU Extension Service, visited Karen Wilder’s third-grade class at Mater Dolorosa School in Independence last month to celebrate National Dictionary Project Week.

The Bees presented each student in Wilder’s class with a new dictionary.

Mary French founded the Dictionary Project in 1995 to provide dictionaries for thirdgraders in the South Carolina public school system, a news release from the Busy Bees

said. Soon, it became a national program, fully funded by individual donations and by sponsors who implement the program in their local school systems, the release said.

The organization believes a dictionary is an essential tool for a quality education and that students cannot do their best work without one. It can be used to improve vocabulary by encouraging students to learn more words, the release said.

Nearly every third-grader in Tangipahoa Parish receives a dictionary from a sponsoring organization, the release said.

Southeastern Louisiana University’s visual arts program has received full-member accreditation status by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

The accreditation signifies that the program meets national criteria following an academic peer review, said Ken Boulton, interim head of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.

“Accreditation is considered a seal of approval,” he said. “It follows a process of self-assessment of how well a program meets NASAD criteria and a

site visit by a team of peers who independently review the program.”

Southeastern is among approximately 320 NASAD accredited programs in the nation.

The program integrates artistic study with a liberal arts education. Graduates typically pursue careers as professional artists, museum and gallery professionals and graphic designers.

The program offers degrees or concentrations in art education, art history, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, drawing, painting, photography and new media and animation.

Girl Scouts launch site for online cookie sales

The traditional Girl Scout Cookie Program is going digital.

For the first time since sales began nearly 100 years ago, Girl Scouts of the USA will allow its young cookie-selling entrepreneurs to sell their wares online.

Members of the Girl Scouts Louisiana East Council will be among the group of Girl Scouts embracing the new Digital Cookie platform, with the local sale beginning Jan. 16, a news release from the Girl Scouts of Louisiana East Council. “Through Digital Cookie, we are bringing the Girl Scout Cookie Program fully into the 21st century,� said Alisha Moore, vice president of sales at Girl Scouts Louisiana East, which covers 23 parishes of southeast Louisiana, including Livingston and Tangipahoa. “Digital Cookie tailors the traditional Girl Scout Cookie Program to fit the modern world, helping give more girls an important foundation in technology.�

ie program is intended to enhance, not replace, traditional sales made door-to-door or during booth sales.

The new platform will allow local Girl Scouts to market their online cookie businesses by inviting customers to visit their personalized cookie websites through a link sent via email.

Customers who buy cookies from girls will be able to have their order processed, paid for and confirmed at point of sale, with the option of having cookies shipped directly to them or delivered by the Girl Scout, the release said.

Moore sees Digital Cookie as advantageous to both girls and customers, because in addition to giving girls a new sales channel, it gives customers, who may not have had access to Girl Scouts and their cookies, the opportunity to order cookies.

The local sale runs from Jan. 16 to March 15, and the council will be offering two new cookies, including a gluten-free cookie at $5 a box, $1 more than the other eight varieties, selling at $4 a box.

Last year, southeast Louisiana

Girl Scouts sold over 1 million boxes of cookies with 211 girls selling at least 500 boxes each.

All proceeds remain within the council’s jurisdiction, funding troop activities with the remainder helping the council to maintain properties, train and recruit volunteers, and support council initiatives, the release said. “By participating in the Cookie Program, girls develop important life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics,�

Jeremy and family members began this summer preparing for the display. In addition to outfitting their home to accommodate the displays and the lights, Jeremy Messenger built a new warehouse to display the time line.

the neighborhood, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office has posted no parking signs along the street. Those who wish to view the display must park at North Park and walk over to the Messenger’s home. Law enforcement will help people walking over to the home get there safely, Jeremy Messenger said. He expects about 25,000 people to view this year’s display. “We’re going to learn a lot this year,� he said.
