It’s a way of thinking that can be a culture shock for a lot of students, said Claire Luikart, a 2007 graduate of St. Joseph’s who returned to the school after college as technology special projects manager. It can be intimidating, and not just because of the expectation of self-reliance. The all-girl Catholic high

school has a reputation for producing tech-savvy students, and the help desk and 3-D printing lab are run by the savviest. It’d be easy to assume that this kind of self-reliant attitude would limit collaboration, but, in fact, it tends to make the collaboration more sophisticated, because each student is required to approach problems in

a unique way, Richardson said. This way of learning gives each student a deeper understanding of each system they’re learning, he said, and that doesn’t apply just to the computer lab. “We take them to conferences and they give presentations. When the time comes to take äSee LAB, page 2G

1,500 participate in Girls on the Run

BY C.J. FUTCH

cfutch@theadvocate.com Girls from all over the Baton Rouge metro area participated Saturday in the 2014 Girls on the Run 5K. Hydie Wahlborg, exectutive director of Girls on the Run South Louisiana, said the race had nearly 1,500 runners, 550 of those girls from 32 schools in and around Baton Rouge. “We added six new schools this season and expect similar growth for our spring program that will begin late February with our end-ofseason 5K the first Saturday in May, she said in an email. “For most girls, it is their first 5K. Also, according to data from our registration forms, this event was the first 5K for 337 adults, she said. Girls on the Run is a program that uses activity-based lessons to teach girls from third to eighth grades how to deal with everything from self-esteem issues to peer pressure to bullying. The activities also serve to slowly build the girls up to a 3-mile run, which ends on race day. This year marks the sixth for Girls on the Run of South Louisiana, and 3,700 girls have completed the program. Race day activities included several stations at which runners could get their faces or their hair painted, write their reasons for running on the backs of their bibs and take pictures using props at the GOTR photo booth, and many other stations. Gingerbread houses more than just sweet treats for Southside woman BY C.J. FUTCH

Melissa Parrino adds peppermint detailing to her gingerbread replica of the Orangerie.

Melissa Parrino has many niches, but her daughter, Katie Guitreau, who works at the LSU AgCenter’s Botanic Gardens, agrees that baking is one of them. It goes a little deeper than just baking, though. Parrino builds gingerbread houses, and fairly elaborate ones at that. This year, as part of a group gingerbread-house-making workshop held at Guitreau’s workplace, Parrino created a foot-high edible replica of

a Burden property building known as the Orangerie — a former citrus greenhouse now used by the Botanic Gardens for events. The nonprofit organization recently renovated its kitchen, and Parrino admits she offered to teach the workshop partly because of the new kitchen space. “It’s so much roomier than my kitchen at home, she said, nodding at the piles of candy of every possible shape, flavor and description that littered the kitchen island, along with long sheets of baked ginger-

bread. “As you can see, this can take up a lot of room, she said. Not to mention time. In reality, after the baking is done, you can have a house constructed and decorated inside a couple of hours. But as Guitreau, who follows in her mother’s footsteps when it comes to perfectionism, points out, “there’s always a little bit more you can do. Parrino has been decorating and giving her houses as gifts during the holidays for decades, going back to her days as a cafeteria manager at

Magnolia Woods Elementary school. “I’d bake the gingerbread in the ovens at school, but I’d wait to put it together and decorate it until the kids were in the lunchroom. It became something to look forward to, for the students and for me,â€? she said. Each year, she would make a couple and, on the last day before Christmas break, give away the houses to students chosen in a random drawing. “They waited for gingerbread time,â€? she said. äSee GINGERBREAD, page 2G

Continued from page 1G questions, the adults tend to ask them questions thinking they will get simple answers, and these girls just blow them away with their level of knowledge,” he said. At the beginning of December, a few of the students helped lead a session on student-run help desks at the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators in New Orleans. Though it started very small, the help desk has been operating for about 15 years, which makes it among the first, if not the first, all-female studentrun high school help desks in the country, Richardson said. “And when I say help desk, I mean certified to diagnose and make warranty repairs by the computer manufacturers,” he said. “If you’re in Baton Rouge on business, and you have trouble with, say, your Toshiba laptop, and you call Toshiba looking for a certified repair shop nearby, St. Joseph’s Academy will be on that list,” he said. “Our technicians are qualified using the same metrics that a Radio Shack does.”

Climbing the ladder

Students who are part of the help desk program only work to maintain student computers, at least during their computer class time. “They cannot work during school hours, and they can’t work if they haven’t finished their homework or school projects, so we’re not running a sweat shop here,” Richardson said. “While they would be qualified to start working on computer repair right now, this is not a technical school — it’s a college prep school,” he said. But the technical knowledge and, more importantly, critical thinking and logic skills they are developing at the help desk will make them that much more competitive in college. But it’s a long road to get to the help desk. Each student starts off, like Solomon did, with a class. “Every day is a job interview. We’re always watching how they approach problems,” Richardson said. If Solomon didn’t start out as a techie, she may well leave as one. “The first class was just getting to know everyone, how everything works,” she said.

GINGERBREAD Continued from page 1G

When she later moved to a middle school, she continued the tradition, but she used it as a means to make sure no one moved to the “naughty” list in the lunchroom. “I’d tell them they would only be in the drawing if they behaved themselves.” When she stopped working in the cafeteria, however, she kept making gingerbread houses, mostly for family or for special organizations. She makes houses to take to pediatric units in hospitals, and she made a replica of her favorite spot in Colorado and of her daughter’s vacation home. Even her mistakes turn out well. A droopy roof on one of her practice houses became a

Exporting knowledge

St. Joseph’s Academy sophomore Mi’Yana Solomon works on a laptop Dec. 11 at St. Joseph’s Academy. The school’s student-run help desk for computer and software repair has been in operation for 15 years. She started hanging around the computer lab, headquartered in the library, more and more often. The library is a fitting place for the lab, Richardson said, because of his other rule: Read, think, repeat. Read everything. Read anything. Just don’t stop reading. And sometimes, that reading includes computer manuals, because of the first rule: Try three before you ask me. Students set a lot of their own agenda, learning-wise, choosing projects to further their computer knowledge. Once they’ve got the hang of basic troubleshooting, they may be assigned to the intake desk. “This is the first filter, where the basic problems are addressed,” Richardson said. Students at this level know how to reset computers, recover lost data, reinstall drivers or handle other software problems. If the problem cannot be addressed there, it is rerouted to the lab itself. The lab is where deeper diagnostics happen; parts are ordered from the manufacturer and replaced. Students who work for the

Solomon’s next goal is to work up to a service learning trip. Right now, she’s learning the intricate details of the computers that just cycled out of St. Joseph’s 1:1 program, which assures each student a schoolissued laptop. When the school buys new computers, it refurbishes the old computers, and technicians deliver them to a site chosen by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Students have delivered computers to Nicaragua, South Africa, Puerto Rico and many other places around the world. “So they have to know how to do everything. They may have to build cables, configure switches, how to network the system. It has to be in good working order when they leave,” he said. Furthermore, the students have to teach their counterparts at the school they travel to, so that those students will be able to maintain the network. In order to participate, students also have to work to pay for a portion of the trip, “so they really have to want to do this,” Richardson said. It’s hard, Solomon said. Last week, she and a few other students working toward their next service learning trip to Puerto Rico delivered some computers to an alternative school in Baton Rouge. “This is sort of a tryout,” Richardson said. They set up a network there, and taught the students how to maintain the network. “We’re also looking to

haunted house that she donated to United Way for Halloween. More importantly, it’s helped her get through some scary moments: Parrino has breast cancer. “I can’t call myself a ‘survivor,’ technically, because I still have cancer in my body. But I am living with breast cancer, and I get tired. I can’t do all the things I used to do, at least not yet. I’m working back to those things, but for now, this is something that doesn’t take a lot of strength, and I love it. “It’s a great creative outlet,” she said. “You’d be surprised what you can re-create out of candy,” adding that one of her gingerbread students came up with an idea she’s never seen before in a couple of decades of gingerbread construction — a sleigh using a slab of gingerbread with two small candy

canes as runners. “It never gets old, because you can improve upon your ideas every year,” she said. Francine Lee heard about the class and decided it was a perfect chance to take a break from the hustle of the holidays. She brought along her friend Paula Mercer, who decorated her own house using a slightly different roofing technique that included cross-hatching the roof with a grid pattern and the round candies. “It’s very relaxing,” Lee said, adding coin-shaped candies to the roof of her gingerbread house, carefully coating each piece with the icing that serves as glue. “It’s getting me into the spirit of the season.” Parrino hopes to continue the gingerbread workshops every year at Christmas at the Botanic Gardens.

see if everyone gets along. It’s good to know that before you leave the country.” They also have to research the culture of the country they’re traveling to, and learn some of the language. For senior Caroline Wright, her service learning trip to a school in Puerto Rico was profound. “I’ll never forget it,” she said. Especially since she helped deliver and set up a computer network and computer lab at a school that didn’t have funds to buy chairs to go in it. “She won’t brag on herself, but I will. She quietly left the lab, called her parents, who donated the funds to buy chairs. We went directly to the store and got them,” Richardson said. “I’ll hold that experience with me forever,” she said. The students also man the school’s 3-D printers, and all students have access to the printers for school projects, from art to music to sciences. One student made a clarinet reed out of plastic, which didn’t work out, so they reconfigured the printer to use a wood pulp substance. “It’s amazing what they’re coming up with,” said Luikart, who got her start at the computer help desk at St. Joseph when, as a student, she broke her laptop and didn’t have the funds to replace it, so she worked it off. As for Solomon, when she started in Richardson’s program, she intended to go to medical school and specialize in pediatric orthopedic surgery. Now, she’s leaning toward computer sciences. Most students won’t make that choice, Richardson said, but, then again, that’s not really the point. Thinking, learning, and using those skills to serve others, is.

Girl Scouts launch online cookie sales Advocate staff report

The traditional Girl Scout Cookie Program is going digital. For the first time since sales began nearly 100 years ago, Girl Scouts of the USA will allow its young cookie-selling entrepreneurs to sell their wares online. Members of the Girl Scouts Louisiana East council will be among the group of Girl Scouts embracing the new Digital Cookie platform, with the local sale beginning Jan. 16. “Through Digital Cookie, we are bringing the Girl Scout Cookie Program fully into the 21st century,” said Alisha Moore, vice president of sales at Girl Scouts Louisiana East, which covers 23 parishes of southeast Louisiana. “Digital Cookie tailors the traditional Girl Scout Cookie Program to fit the modern world, helping give more girls an important foundation in technology.” Moore said the Digital Cookie program is intended to enhance, not replace, traditional sales made door-to-door or during booth sales. The new platform will allow local Girl Scouts to market their online cookie businesses by inviting customers to visit their personalized cookie websites through a link sent via email. Customers who buy cookies from girls will be able to have their order processed, paid for and confirmed at point of sale, with the option of having cookies shipped directly to them or delivered by the Girl Scout. Moore sees Digital Cookie as advantageous to both girls and customers, because in addition to giving girls a new sales channel, it gives customers who may not have had access to Girl Scouts and their cookies the opportunity to order cookies. The local sale runs from Jan.

Girl Scout Brownies Hannah Istre and Lauren Wesley, of Baton Rouge Troop 10324, man their award-winning cookie booth last year. The troop received first prize in the council’s Bling Your Booth Contest. 16 to March 15, and the council will be offering two new cook-

ies, including a gluten-free cookie at $5 a box, $1 more than the other eight varieties, selling at $4 a box. Last year, southeast Louisiana Girl Scouts sold over 1 million boxes of cookies with 211 girls selling at least 500 boxes each. All proceeds remain within the council’s jurisdiction, funding troop activities with the remainder helping the council to maintain properties, train and recruit volunteers, and support council initiatives. “By participating in the Cookie Program, girls develop important life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics,” Moore said. Girl Scouts Louisiana East serves girls 5 to 17 in the parishes of Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, Pointe Coupee, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipa-

Makes 5 Gallons Ingredients:

4 lbs. Manda Sausage or Manda Andouille 15 lbs. Boneless Chicken Meat 4 lbs. Onion (diced) 3 cans Green Chiles 4 Cans Diced Tomatoes 1 cup Diced Jalapenos

18 oz. Tomato Paste 2 tbs Minced Garlic 8 Chicken Bouillon Cubes 1 cup Flour 1 cup Vegetable Oil 1½ gallons Water (or 25 cups)

You may use either boneless chicken breast meat or boneless chicken thigh meat. But, we suggest a combination of the two. Cut the chicken and sausage into bite sized pieces. Bring the burner up to medium heat. Add the flour and the oil and stir to make a roux the color of chocolate. To do this, you have to keep stirring for 20-30 minutes, so the roux does not burn. Once the roux is formed, stir in the chicken, the sausage, the diced onion, chilies, and garlic so they are coated with the roux. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring so that the roux does not burn. Add the water, bouillon cubes, tomato paste, diced tomatoes and the jalapenos and stir very well so the roux is mixed well with the water. Bring to a boil, reduce and lightly boil for 10 minutes. Lower heat and simmer for 1 hour or until the meat is tender. Season to taste. Serve over rice or pasta.

School celebrates holy day with prayer and music Advocate staff report St. Joseph’s Academy gathered as a community on Dec. 8 to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Rev. Jason Palermo, priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church in French Settlement, presided over the Eucharistic celebration in the school’s Activity Center. Sophomore Abigail Livingston welcomed the large crowd. “As Mary was conceived without sin to bear God’s son, so we are reborn sinless in baptism,” she said. “In faith and wonder, we weave one heart in praise of God.” Sophomore Sarah McDowell read from the book of Genesis, and senior Laurie Lyon read from a letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

Seniors Raegan Gallegos and Betsy Bramer led the prayers of the faithful. Before Mass, the St. Joseph’s Academy Singers presented three songs from their annual Christmas concert, held the evening before. Under the direction of Kimberly Hilliard, the singers performed “O Holy Night,” “Carol of the Bells” and “And Suddenly.” Hilliard also directed the Liturgy Choir. Senior Lizzie Vukovics and junior Katie Vukovics served as cantors. Musical accompanists were Evan Roider, piano; and Stephen Barrios and senior Elizabeth Kasongo, percussion. Following Mass, Assistant Principal Sheri Gillio thanked the Liturgy Team, Liturgy Choir, musicians and Palermo for planning the celebration.

St. George Catholic School cheerleaders gather earlier this month to celebrate the Christmas season and give back to the Baton Rouge community. The squad members donated toiletry items, including toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant, as well as gifts for baskets donated to St. Vincent de Paul. The baskets will be shared with those in need of necessities during the holidays, according to a school news release.

Catholic High football player chosen for bowl Advocate staff report

Catholic High School’s Derrius Guice has been selected to join an elite group of All-Americans for the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Guice recently received the jersey he will wear in the annual East vs. West matchup set for Jan. 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The game will be televised on NBC and will feature the nation’s top 90 high school football players. “Derrius and all of the 2015

U.S. Army All-American Bowl players were selected not only for their ability on the football field, but also because they demonstrate mental, emotional and physical toughness — similar strengths to those of our Army soldiers,” said Mark S. Davis, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing. “We are pleased to welcome these talented athletes to this year’s showcase of athleticism, teamwork and excellence and we congratulate each of them on their selection.” Guice was selected by the

U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee, which consists of All American Games, 247Sports and XOS Digital. U.S. Army AllAmericans are eligible for the U.S. Army Player of the Year Award, the Anthony Muñoz Lineman of the Year Award, the American Family Insurance Defensive Player of the Year Award, the Pete Dawkins Game MVP Award and the Felix “Doc” Blanchard and Glenn Davis Awards. As a result of Guice being selected for the U.S. Army All-

American Bowl, his head coach Dale Weiner is invited to travel to San Antonio to attend the U.S. Army Coaches Academy, an elite three-day learning experience, and participate in Bowl Week activities. Students collect toys for St. Vincent de Paul Advocate staff report

St. Michael the Archangel High School students, from left, Mary Grace Eddington, Jaicey McHugh and Stephanie Verdin recently collect toys for St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The St. Michael the Archangel High School Student Council held a Christmas toy drive to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Students in ninth through 12th grades collected more than 500 toys and almost $500, which Student Council officers used to purchase toys and other items for children ages 12 and under. The success of the drive was due to a contest among home rooms, which religion teacher Donna Bass’ class won. Overall, the seniors collected the

most toys and received the class cup spirit points for this event. “It is important for us as high school students, who are fortunate enough to receive a quality education from St. Michael High School, to come together during this Advent season as a student body and give back to those in need by doing something good for others,” said Student Council President Caroline Campagna. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international, nonprofit, charitable organization, which has a history of service to the needy of our community.

St. Joseph’s Academy cheerleaders headed to national event Advocate staff report The St. Joseph’s Academy cheerleaders are the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s state champions in the Large Junior Varsity Division. The squad competed in the UCA State Championship on Dec. 6 at the Monroe Civic Center. The squad will have the opportunity to compete in the national cheerleading championships in Orlando, Florida, in February. Squad captain, senior Mollye McManus, said her team worked hard to get there. “We have practiced two to three times every week since September preparing for this competition,” she said. “I was extremely excited when we were announced as winners, but I was even more proud. As captain, I see how hard these ladies work at practice and how bad they want it, and that is what makes me the most proud, when we accomplish something that we’ve been working so hard at.” McManus said she is confident going into the national championship in February. “Honestly, I expect us to do very well,” she said. “We have a very high skill level

on this team and a very good shot at placing very high. It just takes a lot of work. Even though we have not been a competitive squad for a while, I believe that we can accomplish anything we want. It will take a lot of work, but it will definitely be worth it. I am looking forward to adding harder skills and just taking our routine to the next level. I think all the girls have the mindset of winning. I could not be happier to go to nationals with this amazing and talented group of girls.” Sophomore Annie Lorio said the experience of winning the state title was fulfilling and rewarding. “We are so appreciative of the outcome, and we are honored to have the opportunity to show our talent at Nationals.” Freshman Adeline Holyfield was equally enthusiastic. “State was so much fun,” she said. “We practiced a lot and worked really hard, but it was all worth it. Even though we have never competed together as a team, some of us have competed for other teams, so we kind of knew what to expect. It was a great experience to have with all of my teammates.”
