Joey Roth, left and brother Charlie weigh money donated to Joey’s philanthropy, Woman’s Hospital’s NICU department. The weight can be calculated using a computer program that is helpful when counting large amounts of change.

Brian and Betsy Buchert loved the idea of volunteering for Court-Appointed Special Advocates from the moment they learned about the program. “It sounded like a really useful way to help,” said Betsy Buchert, an obstetrician at Woman’s Hospital, as Brian, a civil engineer, wrangled their sons. “We care so much about children; it really fits with us.” They are one of the rare couple teams who have gone through CASA training, said Jennifer Mayer, recruitment coordinator for the Capital Area CASA Association, and work together on cases involving siblings. Children who are referred to CASA have come into some kind of contact with the system, either child protective services or juvenile justice, Mayer said, and have been placed in foster care. The Bucherts’ mission, as CASA volunteers, is to advocate for the child’s best interests, in whatever way that might mean, until the child is in a permanent, safe home. The Bucherts see it as a big responsibility, they said, but not too far out of their wheelhouse. They have four sons of their own, two biological and two adopted from Ethiopia. “We went to pick them (the twins) up when I was pregnant, so I went from having no children to having 3 boys very quickly,” she said. When it comes to wild behavior from young children, the Bucherts have a pretty good idea of what falls into the normal range, they said, as three of the four swirled around them, playing a game of catch mixed with tag mixed with increasing volume. “We pretty much live at this volume; we’re immune to it,” Betsy Buchert said, and her husband laughed, pausing to point their 5-year-old, Benjamin, away from the Christmas tree with the ball he’d just kicked underneath it. And they’re familiar with the ways children of that age express themselves, she said. “They can’t always just come right out and tell you what’s going on,” she said.

The Grinch visits Inniswold

Cats available

With their children having grown up and left for college, the Mercers, of Inniswold Road, weren’t very keen on putting up a dramatic Christmas light display this year. Their daughter, Victoria, 19, a student at Southeastern Louisiana University, had other plans. She blew up a drawing of the Grinch, stenciled it, and then cut it with a saw before painting it. The nearly 8-foot-tall replica took a series of three weekends at home to make and has been slowing traffic in the neighborhood as passersby slow to look at it since its installment the weekend after Thanksgiving.

The CASA training process was pretty intense, she said, “but all kind of great.” As part of adopting their twins, they had to go through foster parenting classes, she said, a lot of which involved cultural sensitivity and awareness of biases, she said. But CASA training took that to the next level. “We’re there to be an unbiased social advocate for those children. A lot of going into yourself and recognizing your own biases,” she said. “Everybody’s perfect home is not the same thing.” The CASA training sessions total 30 hours, Mayer said, and are meant to prepare volunteers for anything that might come up during the process of advocacy. There is also continued support and supervision for all volunteers. “We don’t just throw our volunteers out there alone,” Mayer said. “It’s a team effort, always.” What the Bucherts are shooting for is being a bridge to the child’s needs. They keep up with what’s happening with everyone in the child’s life, including biological family members. As with their own children, she said, they’re shooting for perfect, but they won’t be. For anyone thinking of going through the training but hesitating at the thought of not being perfect at it, the Bucherts urge potential volunteers not to be frozen into inaction. “We just try to keep in mind that doing it is better than not doing it. We’re doing it,” Betsy said. The next CASA training begins Jan. 6. To learn more, email volunteer@casabr.org or call (225) 379-8598.

Gardere Youth Alliance teams celebrate

Coach Darrin Fontenette holds up the team trophies that two of the Gardere Youth Alliance teams won this year in celebration with the boys at the beginning of the banquet Dec. 13. The Packers’ D-League team, ages 5 to 7, played an undefeated season and won the championship. The PeeWee team, ages 7 to 9, did as well. The juniors, ages 9 to 11, lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals of the tournament, placing third, said Danielle Thomas, and the seniors, ages 11 to 13, lost in the semifinal game of the tournament and placed third.

Rouge performed the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols for parents and supporters on Dec. 9 in the chapel on campus. The program is a mix of Scripture and song that dates back to 1918, when the program was first performed at King’s Chapel, Cambridge, England, according to Jason Hubbard, former choral director for the school. CHANGE

Continued from page 1G Hospital. To this day, Sternberg has no idea what started Joey on this track. “When he found change, I always encouraged him to put it in his piggy bank and save it for college,” she said. Then one day, she noticed a separate jar in his room, slowly filling with change. When she asked Joey about it, he told her he’d decided the money he found wasn’t meant for him, so he was saving it for sick babies. “We’ve always made philanthropy a part of our family, and he was born at Woman’s, but not prematurely,” Sternberg said. “Both he and his brother love babies. When they see a baby, they’re all about it. We’ve talked about it, and he can’t remember where he got the idea the specific idea to help sick babies.” She thought it was a phase and that he would eventually get distracted by something else. Instead, he started asking other people for their change, starting with his family. If everyone just saved the change in their pockets and put it in a jar, he told his mom, they could change the world. So, they sat down together and came up with a means — jars to be placed in different stores — and a name — J.A.R. for Change. Change to change the world appealed to Joey, as did the fact that his initials spelled out the means of collection.

Cute only gets you so far

To encourage her son’s passion about his idea, Sternberg introduced her son to store managers she knew personally. “I opened the doors, but he had to do the talking,” she said. “We started off in the places we shopped every week.” He’d tell the managers about his idea, and more often than not, he got an enthusiastic yes. Eventually, he started a Facebook page and gave presentations on his idea, first to his own school, Episcopal, then to Woman’s Hospital, which developed into something even bigger than his own charity. Joey doesn’t insist that people collect change for his cause. His page provides templates so that anyone can create their own J.A.R. for Change for their own cause. These days, the family buys plastic jars 50 at a time, and they still get plenty of jars they’ve handed out returned to them full of change. But, while he has no way of knowing how many people have taken him up on his idea, his goal is to change the way people think about giving back — not in a mindless way, tossing leftover change into a bin at the grocery store counter, but by creating something to collect change for a cause that’s meaningful to them. And Joey’s way isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. “What impressed me most about this young man is that not everyone has said yes,” said Beverly Brooks Thompson, chief development officer with Woman’s Foundation. “People have told him that they can’t put his jars out because it doesn’t fit with how their business operates, but he doesn’t stop.” It only happened once, Sternberg confirmed, and Joey was surprised by it at first, but he learned from the experience. “Little things add up,” Sternberg said, and she means that when she says it.

More than a year later, his jars collect so much change that they’ve stopped counting it and started weighing it.

Joey Time

As of his eighth year of life, Joey, who also partnered with Raising Cane’s for Giving Tuesday — a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds on Dec. 2 went to J.A.R. for Change — has raised about $7,000 for Woman’s. He delivered his first check for $5,000 to Woman’s in the fall, where it paid for a brand new program called Joey Time, Thompson said. As the only hospital in Louisiana with a Level III Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit, Woman’s Hospital takes care of the smallest premature babies, the sickest babies and, because it gets cases from lower level NICUs across the state, the babies farthest from home. Physical presence isn’t always possible due to illness in either mother or baby or the impracticalities of distance and travel expense for what can be long hospital stays. Joey Time allows parents to schedule two-way video calls with their infants and their care teams using iPads and Apple’s FaceTime software. Woman’s began testing Joey Time within the hospital in September. “Some of our patients will stay with us long-term, for a year or more, and have to go back home for work or to care for their other children,” Thompson said. In addition to getting a chance to stay in the loop with their baby’s care and ask questions, Thompson said, it allows parents to see and hear their babies and vice versa. While the program was tested in-house only for the first phase, for mothers who are in the adult intensive care unit and babies in the NICU, Thomspon said it was a resounding success and will be expanded to parents outside the hospital. The lines are secure and the technology is paid for by the program so there’s no additional expense on parents, she said. It is a valuable service that they’ve been hoping to add for some time, and Thompson couldn’t be happier to have J.A.R for Change as a partner. “As a person who raises funds for a living, I can tell you it’s not comfortable to challenge people to give, and to ask people for money,” Thompson said. For information on J.A.R. for Change, visit www.jar4change.org Roth also was named the 2014 Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Baton Rouge Chapter.

Students become wetlands‘stewards’ Advocate staff report

Fourth-grade students at the LSU Lab School learned about wetlands and their importance in an LSU Agricultural Center program that provides children a hands-on learning experience. The program is offered to schools throughout the state at no charge, funded by a grant from the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. Mindy Brooks, of the LSU AgCenter 4-H Youth Wetlands Program, said 102 University Lab School students participated in a recent event. Classes at each of six stations were taught by high school seniors who went through the class first to learn the details. “Now they are turning around and teaching it to the fourthgraders,” Brooks said. Brooks said the program has been presented throughout the state since August. Usually the program is staffed by various agencies, including the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Sea Grant and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The program puts students into the environment they learn about, Brooks said. “It gets them outside, and it gets them exposed to wetlands topics. We are teaching them to open their eyes and become stewards of our wetlands.” The experience also demonstrates that science doesn’t just take place in exotic, far-flung settings, she said. “There are cool things you can find just in your backyard,” she said. One of the sessions involved a scavenger hunt. Students probed the ground and removed leaves to find out what crawling critters lurk beneath their feet. Alice Leotta and Evan Burgos-Dugas uncovered the biggest surprise of the day, a scorpion — a crustacean normally associated with a dry environment. Leotta found it, but BurgosDugas made the identification, she said. The scorpion escaped later,

Corbin Nguyen found a spider. “I learned that spiders live in wetlands,” he said. “And the water cycle never ends.” Hill Mittendorff said he learned about dissection. “I learned that the cypress tree is the state tree of Louisiana, and Louisiana is mainly a wetland.” Elise Lathom said she didn’t catch any bugs. “Bugs freak me out, but sometimes they can be fun.” Steve Babcock, high school environmental science teacher, said his 14 students improved their understanding of the physical world. “If you can teach it, you really know the concepts,” Babcock said. “It forces them to reach deeper in their understanding.” Because the high school seniors didn’t know what the fourth-graders would ask, they learned to think quickly, he

“He (Kevin Andry) shines a light on the talents of his students and helps them all develop a deep appreciation for the arts.” MELANIE VERGES, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Baton Rouge

Andry named distinguished secondary educator Advocate staff report St. Michael the Archangel High School instructor Kevin “Doc” Andry was named the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge Distinguished Secondary Educator of the Year. The Distinguished Secondary Educator of the Year Award is annually given to a Andry Catholic secondary educator who reflects the richness and diversity of American Catholic education, a news release said. Andry is a musician, educator and a strong Catholic role model for students and teachers, the release said. He has spent more than 26 years as a teacher in Catholic high schools, while also teaching part time in Catholic elementary schools. Andry received a Bachelor of Music degree from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1982, a master’s degree in music performance from LSU in 1984 and a doctorate from LSU in 1988. “I am overwhelmed and humbled by the recognition of being named the recipient of the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge Educational Excellence Award,” Andry said. “I am truly blessed to be able to pursue my vocation of teaching music and be able to share my faith among my students and colleagues on a daily basis. I am fortunate and blessed to get up every morning and work with the students at St. Michael High School.” Over the past six years, Andry has volunteered his time at St. Jean Vianney School, a local kindergarten-througheighth-grade Catholic school, to help boost the school’s band program and prepare the students to attend St. Michael High School. Andry teaches students that they should use their gifts and talents for God, the release said. Andry gives after-school music lessons to his students who are eager to learn difficult pieces of music or perfect their techniques. “Dr. Kevin Andry’s professionalism, abundant energy and generosity of spirit distinguishes him as an outstanding educator,” said Melanie Verges, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Baton Rouge. “He shines a light on the talents of his students and helps them all develop a deep appreciation for the arts.” With teaching part-time at a local elementary school, teaching full-time at St. Michael High School and playing for St. Jude Masses on Sunday, Andry has a full schedule, the release said. He plays in the Baton Rouge Symphony.

cfutch@theadvocte.com A group of 17 St. Joseph’s Academy students and technology department members spent Thanksgiving in Puerto Rico, working at Colegio Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a Catholic school serving students in prekindergarten through eighthgrade. The SJA team transformed a sparse computer lab into a colorful and functional collaborative space, featuring educational murals and donated tablet computers. Team members also repurposed desktop computers that were sitting unused in the lab, adding more workstations for student use. The family of Caroline Wright, a senior on the trip, made a donation to provide chairs for all the new workstations, and SJA donated several projectors and cameras. The six adults and 11 students stayed with the family of SJA faculty member Lee-Ann Vidal in Guaynabo, part of the metropolitan San Juan area. In addition to their work at the elementary school, the team spent a day at Santa Rosa de Lima, a Catholic church in the neighborhood where they stayed. The students designed and painted an inspirational mural for the youth recreation room and cleaned the church facilities. To gain a better understanding of Puerto Rican culture and history, the group took a walking tour of El Viejo San Juan, the historic, walled center of the capital city. They spent a day at El Yunque Rainforest National Park, hiking one of Puerto Rico’s diverse terrestrial ecosystems. The travelers also enjoyed the opportunity to snorkel a coral reef off the coast of Fajardo.

St. Joseph’s Academy sophomores Jamie Lato and Natalie Baldwin make sure computers are in working order for the opening of the refurbished computer lab during a recent trip to Puerto Rico. After snorkeling, the team decided to pick up trash strewn across the beach in Luquillo. In keeping with Generous Promise No. 2 of the Sisters of St. Joseph, this simple act allowed the students to “take steps now to strengthen, heal and renew the face of Earth.” Colette Burke, SJA’s help desk manager and one of the leaders of the excursion, said the sightseeing excursions were both fun and educational, “supplementing the real-world problem-solving and skills learned from the work completed on the computer lab. SJA provided a well-rounded service experience for our students.” While on the trip, John Richardson, co-director of technology at SJA, met with administrators and technology personnel at another Puerto Rican school, Academia Maria Reina. The school is a ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Richardson was able to lay the groundwork for future collaboration between SJA and a sister school.

“We want to create a partnership through which students from both schools can travel and stay with host families,” he said. “Our technology team will be able to help with their technology needs. I look forward to planning our future service mission trips and exchanges.” Sophomore Natalie Baldwin said she enjoyed interacting with the students and teachers at the school. “All the kids were so happy with what little they had,” she said. “On the second day, the principal came into the computer lab to see how things were coming, and she began to cry when she saw all that we had done to the room in just two short days. We had covered every wall with a beautiful message and set up Internet connections throughout the school. Throughout the time in Puerto Rico, I learned to be grateful for what I have, because people in parts of Puerto Rico don’t have much but learn to be happy with what little they do have.” Sophomore Jamie Lato said

I thought this was really cool because most of them spoke English, and they helped me with my Spanish. I also showed the priest how to work his computer. The priest didn’t know much English, so I had to use my Spanish, which helped me get better at it. The trip made me feel more comfortable speaking Spanish now. It also helped me see the different culture and how different things are, and it made me want to help more.” Sophomore Shelby LeBlanc called the Puerto Rican trip the best she’d ever been on. “I loved it, and it was the best Thanksgiving break I’ve ever had,” she said. “I loved working at the school in Ponce and painting all of the murals. I also loved meeting all of the kids when they

were at recess. It was fun to talk and play around with them. It was interesting to learn what and how many languages they spoke. It was also nice knowing that the kids will have a better place to learn.” Sophomore Ainsley Sonnier said she enjoyed the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the Puerto Rican students. “I really wanted to do this mission trip because I love serving others and being able to see results and physical improvements,” she said. “I also really love to travel and see new places and meet new people. Besides the sight-seeing and actual work we did, one of my favorite memories is the view of the island from the backyard of the house we stayed at. You could see all of Puerto Rico! We also enjoyed Mimi, who is Ms. Vidal’s mother. She was so amazing to us throughout the week and cooked for us almost every night. I will really miss seeing her every day.”
