On Tuesday, the board’s Policy Committee, headed by board member Julie Blouin, approved a proposed policy to be sent to the full board for a vote that reads: “Reconsideration of an item voted on shall be made by someone on the winning side, during the meeting in which the Board voted on the item or in the meeting immediately following the vote on the initial action.” The proposal suggests mat-

The Policy Committee also voted to have board attorney Jeff Diez look into formalizing a policy on how board members can put items for discussion on meeting agendas, after board member Robyn Penn Delaney sought clarification on the matter.

mara Lee Viccellio, a fourth-grade student at Central Primary School, doesn’t need to open her school books to learn about American history. She can just talk to her greatgrandfather, Thomas A. Wintz, of Dutchtown, for a lesson. “He was in World War II,” Amara said. “He’s a part of history.” Wintz, 88, who served in the U.S. Navy for two years as an electrician aboard the USS Leon in the South Pacific, was honored with about 100 other veterans for their military service during a special Veterans Day lunch Nov. 11 at Central Primary School. The school’s Parent-Teacher Organization covered the $375 cost of providing lunches for the service members. “I wouldn’t have missed it,” said Wintz, who also dined with greatgranddaughter Arayna Wintz, a prekindergarten student.

The lunch was a good chance for students to meet real-life superheroes, school officials said, because Central Primary has incorporated a superhero theme in the classroom this academic year. “The PTO wanted the kids to understand superheroes are not just people who wear capes,” said Lisa May, a Central Primary kindergarten teacher and PTO member. “They’re people who go out and protect us. They make sure our freedom stands.” Central Primary Principal Christina Knight said the students created posters and wrote thank-you notes to the service members attending the Veterans Day lunch. The veterans were also presented with a certificate of thanks and a lapel flag pin, Knight said. “Some students don’t ever have the opportunity to meet veterans,” said Knight. “We feel like this is a good time to truly understand what these people have done for our country.” Veterans from various military branches were represented at the lunch. U.S. Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Richard Banai joined his daughter, first-grader Elise Banai, in the cafeteria lunch line to pick up some jambalaya. “When she was real little, I had to deploy,” said Banai, who has served two tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. U.S. Army National Guard Staff. Sgt. Richard Banai was deployed when his daughter, Central Primary School firstgrader Elise Banai, was a baby. Now that Banai is stateside, he likes to spend as much time with Elise as he can, including attending events like the Veterans Day lunch with her at Central Primary School on Nov. 11. the veterans’ lunch are so special, Banai said. U.S. Navy Petty Officer Teressa Hill served overseas aboard the USS Thomas S. Gates. Hill, with her fiancé Terrell Stepter, joined Hill’s children, first-grader Cadynce Hill, third-grader Zadyn Hill and fourth-grader Triston Hill for lunch. Hill said she appreciated the veterans’ lunch because of all the events she had to miss in her children’s lives when she was active duty. “Now that I have the time, it makes you realize you didn’t do it in vain,” Hill said. “You aren’t looked over.”
Bob Carles, 76, who served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a corporal, dined with his great-grandchildren, Jadyn and Laiten Lessard. “They asked me, and I try to do as much as I can with them and the grandchildren,” Carles said. “I’m Italian. I’m family-oriented.” Dr. Augustus A. Hall, Jr., 82, a retired colonel with the U.S. Army Medical Corps served 30 years. He joined granddaughter Vivian “Boo” Hall, a first-grader, for lunch with his wife Becky Hall. “I was happy,” Dr. Hall said, when he learned of the school hosting the lunch. “I was happy to come.”

Advice from the Pros! Got a question? INVESTMENTS
chasing “hot” investments Q: Will improve my returns? A:
Investors tend to convince themselves that recent investment performance represents the future. The problem with chasing today's investment options is that by the time you hear about the latest “hot” performers, you may have already missed out on all or most of the opportunity to participate in the price appreciation. Chasing past winners can also lead to overtrading too often increasing the chance you'll buy high and sell low. One potential solution: work with a financial advisor. In fact, some have found that investors who work with a financial advisor tend to hold on to their investments longer and realize better returns than do-it-yourselfers.

COSMETICS I am on a budget. What skin care products do I really need?
1. Sunscreen is the most important anti-aging, skin-protecting product on the market, and for good reason. It protects your skin from damaging UV-rays that lead to photo-aging and worse, skin cancer. 2. Apply a prescription retinoid before bed, or an over the counter product containing retinol. We know for sure that retinoids are the most scientifically proven-effective antiaging ingredients to date. Applying a retinoid-type product every other night you will see noticeable improvement in the evenness and smoothness of your skin. 3. Add an antioxidant serum. Antioxidants can help protect the skin against sun damage and skin cancer. These antioxidants work by speeding up the skin’s natural repair systems and by directly inhibiting further damage. Including more antioxidants in your regimen can improve the look of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne, redness and dehydrated skin. 2306-A

Dutchtown High running back Fitell Bolding and quarterback Jared Sparks celebrate a Griffin touchdown at the Dutchtown versus Zachary game earlier this season. The two teams will meet again in the playoffs on Friday.
Griffins skin Bearcats for playoff win The Dutchtown Griffins traveled all the way to Ruston to face the Bearcats in Round 1 of the state playoffs and came away with a 31-17 win. The 15th-seeded Bearcats’ heads were sort of spinning early on — the 18th-seeded Griffins took the opening kickoff and drove for a touchdown as senior quarterback Jared Sparks took it in from the 2-yard line. Both teams lined up for the kickoff as usual, but coach Benny Saia opted to surprise the Bearcats with one onside kick that was successful for the Griffins. Dutchtown drove down the field, setting up kicker Christian Carillo’s 37-yard field goal. The Griffins (8-3) scored 10 points before the Bearcats (6-5) ever touched the ball on offense. Senior running back Fitell Bolding was the workhorse of the offense as he ran for 82 yards on 27 carries for a tough 3 yards per carry. Jared Sparks mopped up after Bolding as he scored all four Griffin touchdowns. Next on the menu for the Griffins will be the No. 2-seeded Zachary Broncos (10-1) in the regional round of the 5A playoffs Friday night at home. The Griffins and Broncos get to do it all over again. Early in the season, the Broncos won a 44-34 shootout at Dutchtown. The Griffins will rely on Bolding to set up the passing attack. Both quarterbacks started their careers at Dutchtown as quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. moved to Zachary and led the Broncos. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Dutchtown.
Gators extend playoff run
The St. Amant Gators used a balanced attack against the Covington Lions and came away with a convincing 3621 win. The Gators (9-2) are seeded No. 10 and the Lions (6-5) were seeded No. 23. St. Amant set the pace as they took their opening possession and went on a 66-yard drive that ended with a touchdown as senior quarterback Hayden Mallory hit receiver Tanner Mayo with an 11-yard strike and took a 7-0 lead. The remainder of the first quarter was scoreless, but the Lions answered early in
the second quarter as quarterback Joshua Alfaro hit receiver Tyson Blanks with a 66-yard touchdown pass. The Gators responded with a two-play scoring drive when Nathan Taylor ran for a 65-yard touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. Covington tied it up at 14 with a touchdown on its next possession. The Lions lost their second fumble of the half and Briggs Bourgeois hit a 40-yard field goal to give the Gators a 17-14 advantage at the half. Covington took their first lead of the night on their first possession of the third quarter. ASCENSION They went ATHLETICS on a 13-play, 80-yard drive as Austin Schexnayadre punched it in from the 2-yard line for the score and a 21-17 lead. The Gators responded again with a 70-yard drive as Taylor took it in from the 13-yard line for a 23-21 score and secured the lead for good. With the score 23-21 late in the fourth quarter, Taylor put the icing on the cake as he returned a Covington punt 52 yards for a touchdown. The Gators scored once more to end the game with a 36-21 win. The Gators will travel to Boutte to face the No. 7-seeded Hahnville Tigers (8-3) in the regional state playoffs on Friday at 7 p.m.

Spartans lose to John Ehret
The East Ascension Spartans ended their football season in Marrero on Nov. 13 as No. 9-seeded John Ehret crushed the No. 24 Spartans in its Class 5A playoff opener. Things started out even as Spartans quarterback Kyran Irvin and Ira Washington combined on a 64-yard touchdown in the first quarter to tie the score 7-7. The rest of the night, things went downhill for the Spartans (5-6) as the Patriots went on a scoring spree and put 32 unanswered points on the board. All three 5-5A teams in the parish made the playoffs. Congrats to the Spartans, the Gators and the Griffins. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate.
