Sheriff’s Dept. offers cause for shopping
Advocate staff report Decked out in cowboy boots and old-West attire, members of The Rock Church in St. Amant will greet visitors Thursday through Saturday night for the fifth annual Cowboy Christmas. The church turns its Sunday school classrooms into a 19th century-styled Western town for an old-fashioned Christmas experience, said the Rev. Blake Melancon and Cowboy Christmas coordinator Tony Alise. Guided tours of the town start
at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and continue until 8 p.m. and start at 5 p.m. Saturday. The event comes together with the help of church volunteers and countless hours of work and planning. Throughout most of the year, a group of buildings on church property are used for Sunday school. In December, the volunteers turn the classrooms into a Western-style town, complete with a bakery, blacksmith’s shop, hotel and jailhouse. In each room, church mem-
bers dressed in period costume will narrate parts of the Christmas story. The tour starts at the welcome center, where children and adults can play games as each tour waits its turn. In addition to the sketches, there will be a petting zoo, hayride, gospel music show, nativity scene and bonfire. Everything is meant to be a reminder of the past and the true meaning of Christmas, Melancon said. For more information, visit visittherock.com.

Vanessa Blair’s voice mail filled up as her phone “was blowing up” Monday with people trying to register for the Jambalaya Festival Association’s annual Gonzales Christmas Parade. Blair is the chairwoman of the annual Christmas Parade, set for 2 p.m. Dec. 13. The parade starts at East Ascension High School and rolls along Burnside Avenue to U.S. 61. Tuesday was the deadline to register, but Blair said late registration will be accepted “with a late fee.” The JFA, known for hosting Gonzales’ annual Jambalaya Festival in the heart of the city, took over the parade a few years ago after the Ascension Chamber of Commerce gave up sponsorship. “We went to a meeting with other nonprofits, and in the end, we decided we would put on the parade,” JFA President Wally Taillon said. Taillon, 70, said his group is known for “putting on a great family festival, and we just couldn’t see the parade ending … so we decided to take it over.” “I’ve forgotten how long it’s been since we took over,” Taillon said. “We work on the festival and the parade all year long and they kind of blend together.” The parade, Taillon said, is expected to have around 100 entries, including marching bands, dance units, floats, fire trucks and dignitaries. Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux is riding as grand marshal. “It’s all for the families,” Taillon said. Many families stake out their spots the night before and spend the day “cooking and getting together.” “It’s like tailgating at a LSU äSee PARADE, page 2G

home game,” he said. Money made from the parade and festival is used to cook thousands of jambalaya dinners that are sold by nonprofit groups to support dozens of good causes, Taillon said. The JFA also provides the rice concoction to government-supported events, like a recent training hosted by the parish’s emergency preparedness office and other law agencies. Since August, the group has cooked at least two large pots of jambalaya a week for local charities, he said. In addition, the group provides money to the Louisi-
ana National Guard and area schools. The JFA has about 45 members with a core of “15 workers I can count on at every event,” Taillon said. The group plans to sell 500 bowls of jambalaya on parade day in front of EAHS. Taillon and his crew also will prepare around 180 hamburgers for those who don’t want jambalaya. While Blair will spend the next week finalizing the parade lineup, Taillon will worry about the weather. “All we want is sunshine and blue skies,” he said. Leadership team gets $5,000 donation Advocate staff report Healthy Spaces for West Bank Faces, a Leadership Ascension project team, received its first donation on Nov. 19 for a community park the team plans to build in Donaldsonville this spring. The $5,000 donation was provided by PotashCorp. The team seeks to raise $50,000 for the project and also hopes to install a walking path. The park site, located at the old Lowery Middle School, owned by The Church of Donaldsonville, will include a playground designed by LSU engineering students based on drawings and comments from students at Donaldsonville Primary School and Lowery Elementary School, a news release said. “These kids should be able
to have constructive fun in a nice family setting. This park will provide a place for our students to play in a safe environment when they are home, not out running on the streets,” said Dawn Love, principal of Lowery Elementary. The LSU engineering students are led by Dr. Marybeth Lima, the Cliff and Nancy Spanier Alumni Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and director of the Center for Community Engagement, Learning and Leadership at LSU. Her students have designed and built more than 30 playgrounds. To become a partner or contribute to the project, email project manager Jackie Tisdell at jackie.tisdell@apsb.org or call (225) 210-7567.

Advocate staff report Principal Dawn Love, of Lowery Elementary School in Donaldsonville, and a small group teachers and staff delivered surprise visits to students on Nov. 24. The group drove through various neighborhoods to deliver more than 50 backpacks filled with books along with cookies, treats and hugs. “Now four months into the school year, many of our students have broken backpacks and have not been able to replace them. By removing barriers to learning, this is one less thing for our students to worry about. We want to provide the tools they need to focus on being kids and learning,” Love said. The deliveries were funded by a Believe and Succeed Grant recently awarded to Lowery Elementary by the Louisiana Department of Education. Returning and new members of the 2015-16 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council took their oaths of office during the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. a Better Tomorrow,’ ” said Tamiko Garrison, volunteer coordinator of the group. Garrison said the group was originally created in 1996, under then-Mayor Bernard J. Francis Sr., Garrison’s father. However, the group remained dormant until 2014, when current Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr. and Garrison revived and restructured the program. Basketball is front and center
Basketball season is underway with tournament play that will last for a while, sort of like preseason on the professional side. The East Ascension Spartans boys sport a 5-1 record going into the Thanksgiving holiday weekend fresh from winning the G.L. Harris Tournament in White Castle. In the first game of the tournament against the Port Allen Pelicans, the Spartans came away with a 71-43 win. Scoring double digits in all three games was junior guard Koye Ruffin as he led the offensive output with 12 points in the opener. In the second game, the Spartans took on the Plaquemine Devils and topped them 65-46 as Ruffin led the way with a 16-point game. In the finals, the Spartans toppled the Donaldsonville Tigers 85-54 and again Ruffin led all scorers, ringing up 29 points. Senior point guard Jimel London added a scoring punch for East Ascension in all three games as did junior guard Le’Aaron Cain. The Spartans have a very young team this season but have the potential to do very well in district play. “I would describe our team as growing,” said head coach Barry Whittington. “I think we have the potential to be very, very good but we still have so many young kids that don’t seem to have the urgency I’d like them to have. We are growing into that role and we’ll have much more balance than we did last year.” Although the youth on the team is an asset, court experience from some of the older players will prove valuable. “With the young team we have, senior forward Bilal Frank, who was co-defensive district player of the year last season, will have to take on some of the court leadership role, along with point guard Jimel London,” he said. “He’ll be sort of our quarterback, leading by action and attitude.” Two of the younger players that didn’t see much playing time last year that look to be a big asset this year are Cain, who is a good scorer, and Cameron Wire, whose rebounding skills will give the Spartans some goals under the net and the offense more opportunities. Three of the football team’s players that competed in the playoffs joined the team as well. Justin Harris and Cameron Wire played defensive end on the football team and Shedrick Smith, who is a wide receiver, will be a valued shooter on the basketball team. The trio is playing now but it will take some time to get back in the flow of things. The district title will be hotly contested this season. “Catholic High won the district last year and have a lot of guys returning this year so they will be very strong,” he said. “Coach (Harold) Boudreaux will have his team ready, so McKinley will be tough again this year. “Coach (Travis) Uzee will have the Gators ready and coach (Patrick) Hill with have the Griffins ready and both teams will be very well coached,” the coach added. “We

Not long after, Alan caught a 3-pound bass and added another redfish to the ice chest. Things were looking up a little so we headed a little farther up in the marsh. We stopped the boat at the end of a canal and the water was gorgeous so we took out the bass fishing gear. Working grass beds with spinner baits and the points with a chrome/ blue back Sexy Shad, the gang added another 15 bass to the ice chest. We decided to head back to Lake DeCade to finish the day fishing for specks and picked up another bass on the way. The weather warmed up from the cold morning and sometimes that will lend itself to better fishing for specks. We fished for another hourand-a-half with the Sexy Shad and plastic baits under a popping cork and put eight specks and two more redfish to the count. That made our total for the day 8 specks, 4 redfish and 17 bass; a great mix of fish that proves we are really blessed in south Louisiana. But like most usual fishing trips like this, something else turned out to be a little more important than the catch. We grew up in Gaudin subdivision and Barry grew up in Oak Terrace, so we’ve known Barry Advocate staff photo by APRIL BUFFINGTON and his brother, Randy, since we were kids.
