Gonzales holds first local Wreaths Across America Day BY VON DE LEIGH HATCHER Special to The Advocate
Area residents on Saturday paused in the midst of the holiday season to gather at the Ascension Veterans Memorial Park in Gonzales to remember deceased veterans for the first local Wreaths Across America Day ceremony.
The event was part of a nationwide movement held at the same time, on the same day to honor deceased veterans. Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez and Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux attended the ceremony, which displayed wreaths designed for the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POW/MIA. The Ascension Veterans Associations hosted the ceremony and distributed wreaths to place on the local grave sites of veterans in across Ascension
Parish. Tanya Whitney, committee chairwoman for the Ascension Veterans Memorial Park, said she first learned of Wreaths Across America while serving on active duty in Washington, D.C. “Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreathlaying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992,” Whitney said.
One hundred and thirty wreaths were placed on graves in Ascension Parish this year. “The VA statistics say we have about 7,000 local veterans in Ascension Parish. We have quite a few in active duty,” Whitney said. “We want you to understand that the freedoms we enjoy today come at a cost that one day you yourself might have to pay.” In addition to the wreath-laying ceremony, the Ascension Republican Women dedicated two new bricks for the park’s memorial garden in honor of Sgt. Justin Michael Kling and

Ascension Christian Superintendent Mark Pellegrin had no idea his desire to graduate “problem solvers and advanced thinkers” would result in the school receiving a national certification for its efforts to promote science, technology, engineering and math. Pellegrin found out in early December that Ascension Christian, a prekindergarten through 12th-grade school in Gonzales with 465 students, has become the first school in Louisiana to receive a STEM certification from the nonprofit group AdvancED. The school was in the process of renewing its national accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools when it learned that SACS and its parent group AdvancED were offering a new STEM certification. “We looked at the standards and realized we were already doing the work and decided to go for it,” Pellegrin said. That started the ball rolling on a lengthy review process to meet AdvancED’s 11-standard review process. Pellegrin said the reviewers were looking for program that were interdisciplinary and taught students to research, design and implement a project to solve a problem. Pellegrin pointed to a group of students who recently created a robot that could deliver a cup of coffee to his office. “I’d been challenging the students to build a robot to bring me äSee STEM, page 6G

BR charity gets a hand from Gonzales police Advocate staff report For many years, the Gonzales Police Department has gifted area families and children with food, clothes and toys throughout the holiday season. This year, based upon a request from Officer Robin Brunke, the department gave some assistance to Needy of Greater Baton Rouge. Needy of Greater Baton Rouge President Tim Arceneaux and his wife, Tracy, have been donating items to needy families during every holiday throughout the year for more than 10 years. “When Officer Brunke approached me about us being the ones to give back this time, it was a no-brainer,” Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson said. “Tim and Tracy have been so passionate about helping our cause for so many years. Being just as passionate about helping them became equally as important to all of us.” After approval from Jackson, the department began collecting clothes and shoes and presented them to the couple on Dec. 1. Advocate staff report The Senior Robotics Club from St. Theresa Middle School in Gonzales participated in the First Lego League Qualifier at Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Magnet Academy in Scotlandville on Nov. 14. Teams from area schools competed in the categories of robot design, robot performance, project and core values. St. Theresa won the trophies for robot performance and overall champion. This year’s theme was “Trash Trek. Students identified a problem with the way we make or handle trash, then designed a solution. St. Theresa chose the way a school handles trash: specifically paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum cans. To promote recycling at school, the team organized “Recycle Wars, in which gradelevel competition was established with students bringing in paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum cans for two weeks.

DONALDSONVILLE — A group of local high school students officially began the second year of a reborn program that involves local youth in government. Returning and new members of the 2015-16 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council took their oaths of office during the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. MYAC’s mission is to serve as advocates for local youth to city government, addressing issues that affect local youth while also offering a chance to learn volunteer, leadership and civic skills. “MYAC’s motto is ‘Young People Leading the Way to
a Better Tomorrow,’ ” said Tamiko Garrison, volunteer coordinator of the group.
Garrison said the group was originally created in 1996, under then-Mayor Bernard J. Francis Sr., Garrison’s father. However, the group remained dormant until 2014, when current Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr. and Garrison revived and restructured the program. Young Bulldogs squad ready to rebound With a 1-2 record at press time, the 1A Ascension Catholic’s boys’ basketball team could be a bit discouraged. But that’s not how first-year head coach Kylon Green sees it. “We lost a close game to Berwick, which is a good team, and lost to Zachary,” he said. “We will use these two games as a learning experience, and they were a good measuring stick for us.” So how do the Bulldogs stack up this year? “We have two returning starters from last year, Javon Yarbrough and Kaleb Winchester, but we also have two other players, junior Kebori Hunter and junior Jacoby Stewart, who has considerable amount of playing time with the 2014-15 team,” Green said. Winchester and Hunter are the offensive leaders and contributing on defense, he said. As far as youth is concerned, the coach said he will be counting on freshman Jamil Truxillo. “But we have another firsttimer on the basketball squad, senior D.C. Mattingly, who is our spark on the team,” he said. Mattingly was the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs and decided to give the basketball team a try. Ascension Catholic’s biggest competition for this season will be the Southern Lab Kittens as well as the White Castle Bulldogs, who are 6-3. But the biggest challenge might well be that Green will be the Bulldogs’ fourth coach in four years. “My goal for this year is to assure the guys that I’ll be around for a while and get us to the next level,” he said. “We’ve made the playoffs in the last three years but we want to use our experience to get to the second round this season.” Their season opener was against the Berwick Panthers (8-3), a 3A team that looks to
do well in district play with a shot at the title. The Bulldogs, behind the scoring of senior guard Kaleb Winchester’s 17 points, led at the half 28-24. But the offense couldn’t quite keep up the pace as they were outscored 26-19 in the second half and lost a close one 50-47. Game two was not so nice to the Bulldogs as the 5A Zachary Broncos (6-3) came into town and left with a 93-58 win. Winchester led the Bulldog scorers again with 18 points. ASCENSION In game ATHLETICS three against the Holden Rockets (5-8), the offense and defense played with consistency and Ascension Catholic came away with its first win of the season 57-48. Winchester led the scoring with 19 points while junior Hunter had an allstar performance night with 17 points and 13 steals.

Winchester has a shot at breaking scoring record
Winchester comes into the season with 1,524 points under his belt. He has averaged 508 points for each of his three seasons. He needs 530 points to tie the 2,054 points all-time leading scorer Lane Frey scored from 1996-99. The former Bulldog All-District and All- State standout went on to play at Southeastern Louisiana University as a starter for three years. Troy LeBoeuf coached Frey at Ascension Catholic High School in his junior year and was head coach for his senior year. “Lane was a great athlete and person as well. If you had a son, he is who you’d like him to be. He was very unselfish on the court,” LeBoeuf said. “As a matter of fact, I had to threaten him to make him shoot more. I’m still active in all things Bulldog and know Kaleb as well. He has a great opportunity in front of him. It

Ascension Catholic’s Kaleb Winchester drives to the goal for a basket against St. John during a game last season. will be exciting to watch this season.” Although coach Green is coaching Winchester for his first time, he’s known him for a long time. “He’s always been a very special player; he can get it done on both ends of the court,” Green said. “His peers follow him; as he goes, we go. He’s very passionate about the game and is always willing to learn new things. He puts 100 percent in everything he does.” So Winchester started off this season by averaging 18 points in the three games they’ve played. He needs to average a little over 20 points per game to tie or break the record. So just how does he feel? “Man, I’d like to do this a lot because it makes me feel good on the inside. It would make
my mom and dad proud of me,” Winchester said. What does he think his chances are of accomplishing this feat? “I think I really have a good chance. I’ve been averaging 21 or 22 points a game so I think I have a good shot at breaking the record.” Frey is well aware of Winchester’s opportunity to break his record. “I am very excited for his opportunity and hope he plays well enough to beat my record. Nothing would make me happier,” Frey said. Frey is now an endocrinologist for Thibodaux Regional Hospital and a proud father of a 6-month-old boy. He keeps up with Bulldog sports through his former coach, Troy LeBouef, and hopes to make a game to see Kaleb play near the end of the season.
Lane Frey, who played at Ascension Catholic High School from 1996 to 1999, holds the school’s basketball points record.
