Fiery tradition rages on for Gonzales families BY VON DE LEIGH HATCHER Special to The Advocate

The holiday season is a time of tradition, celebration and remembrance for the extended Laiche and Duplessis families, and this year is no exception. Since 2001, the family has gathered for an annual Thanksgiving weekend camping trip to plot plans for their nowThis year, legendary New Year’s Eve the cousins bonfire. When this family builds a decided to bonfire, it is no small matbuild a Navy ter. In the past, they have Douglas SBD built a traditional tepeeDauntless styled bonfire, a replica Aircraft A-24 of the south end zone of the Tiger Stadium, and an to honor 80-ton Link-Belt hauler veterans crane. Summertime memories of chlorine-died green hair, Frito pies, baseball games, tennis lessons and late-night dances echoed in the halls of the St. Amant Recreational Center as hunClouatre dreds gathered on Dec. 22 to rename St. Amant Park as the Roger J. Clouatre Memorial Park. While the Parish Council approved the renaming earlier this year, friends and family gathered last week to officially rename the park in memory of one of the men who pushed to make the once-private park a public property. The ceremony highlighted the love and laughter of a lifetime as friends and family remembered days at the St. Amant Park with Roger James Clouatre. Brothers Robert Clouatre and Randy Clouatre Sr. welcomed guests and recognized present elected officials. The Rev. Tom Ranzino, vicar general of the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge and pastor of St. Jean Vianney Church in Baton Rouge, gave the opening invocation. Roger Clouatre’s grandchildren led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Parish President Tommy Martinez credited Clouatre with making the park available to parish residents and commented on the large number of Clouatres in attendance. “It’s kind of tough being the only non-Clouatre on the agenda,” Martinez said. “Without the help of Roger Clouatre, we would not be here today.” The park was first formed in 1968 as St. Amant Properties Inc. and led by a board of 20 members, presided by Perry Sheets. The park, previously cow pasture, bordered the land of the Clouatre family. In 1995, SPI sold the park to Ascension Parish at the urging of Roger Clouatre, who saw it renovated before his death in 2001. Clouatre was a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and avid volunteer who led Ascension Parish in initiatives such as the Ascension Parish Trash Bash, Chem Friends, Physics Fun Fest, Library Technology Center, Parish Science Fair, Boy Scout food drives, Volunteer Ascension School Tools Drive, Junior Achievement and Teacher and Student Shadow Days. äSee CLOUATRE, page 3G

raising, was the odd man out in the eventual five-man race that also included Democrats Ricky Diggs and Clarence Henry Jr. Matassa led with Cointment only five points behind. In the runoff, Matassa continued to stress his experience and rolled out endorsements from Parish Council members and others, while Cointment pounded away at what he saw as parish government’s inability to deal with growth. Cointment closed the gap, but Matassa was the eventual winner, garnering just 117 votes more than his opponent. With wins by Matassa, a former longtime Democrat turned Republican, and incumbent Coroner Dr. John Fraiche, who changed parties in 2015, all five parishwide elected officials — parish president, coroner, sheriff, assessor and clerk of court — are Republicans for the first time in decades.

Domestic abuse deaths

A Geismar man was accused of brutally beating his estranged wife to death with a baseball bat Aug. 9 and breaking the arm of her 18-year-old son when the teen tried to defend his mother. David Johnson Sr., 38, was under a restraining order to stay away from his wife, Monica Butler Johnson, 45, when he allegedly killed her and left her body in the backyard of the family home. Johnson was arrested on a count of first-degree murder. Johnson had been arrested in December 2014 on a count of domestic abuse strangulation. Domestic abuse strangulation is considered the best predictor of the future homicide of victims of domestic violence, police and victim advocates say. Monica Johnson, though, dropped that count against her estranged husband, but six months later, she sought a protective order, saying he was stalking her. A temporary restraining order issued against him was extended, and a hearing had been scheduled for Aug. 24 to consider the protective order. Monica Johnson’s murder was one of two domestic violence homicides in Ascension Parish during 2015. Deshad Perry, of Prairieville, was stabbed to death in October. His girlfriend, Jonqualya Benton, was arrested in the killing. Also, a mystery that had remained for nearly a year in an apparent 2014 domestic violence homicide case was solved when the body of the alleged perpetrator was pulled from the Mississippi River. Authorities said at the time that Ronald Green Sr. leaped from a bridge after shooting to death his wife and son, Dewona Green, 40, and Ronald Green Jr., 12, at their Gonzales home in April 2014. When his body wasn’t immediately found, it led to speculation that Green had, instead, planned a getaway. But Green’s body was found in March by a crew member of a tugboat who saw it floating in the river near Reserve. Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley created some con-

Wiley stood by his comments after criticism by such groups such as the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the National Network to End Domestic Violence, which said that it’s actually more Brown dangerous for women to have a gun in the home when they live with an abusive spouse. This past fall, the Sheriff’s Office put into effect new protocols for handling domestic violence cases, including helping victims get to a shelter more quickly than before, adding more officers to its Domestic Violence Unit and speeding up the process of serving offenders with temporary restraining orders.

Politician accused of abuse

Slightly more than a month after cruising to victory in his Oct. 24 bid for re-election, Democratic State Sen. Troy Brown was arrested on allegations he punched a woman who claimed to be his longtime mistress — what she called a “side friend” — during an argument after the Bayou Classic in New Orleans on Nov. 28. The married man didn’t confirm the claims because he said he could not remember what happened that night. He said brain damage from a long-ago car accident has led to short-term memory loss, a disorder he said that worsens when he imbibes in alcoholic beverages, which his spokeswoman admitted he was doing the night of the big football match between Grambling State and Southern universities in New Orleans. The victim told officers she and Brown, who as a legislator in 2014 proposed the creation of a domestic violence commission, had previous arguments that involved grabbing. In 2012, she and Brown had a domestic disturbance at her Labadieville home one night that led her to call Assumption Parish sheriff’s deputies, though she did not press charges and Brown was not arrested, a sheriff’s report says. Amid that turmoil, it also came to light that Brown lives at and uses for tax and business purposes a Geismar address that is outside the boundaries of his Senate District 2.

Brown gave the address to New Orleans police officers responding to the incident at the Hyatt Regency hotel. Brown’s spokeswoman said he has multiple properties and spends time at the Geismar address — where his wife said he lives — and at a unit in a Paincourtville duplex that is in his district. Though Brown’s spokeswoman has said he has no intention of leaving office, he was forced in early December to give up his vice chairmanship on the Senate Environmental Quality Committee until his legal issues are resolved. Brown is headed to court Jan. 8 in New Orleans over his Nov. 28 arrest on a charge of misdemeanor domestic abuse battery. A court challenge also has been filed against Brown over his residency in Senate District 2.

Argument leads to slaying

Todd Toups, 18, a high school senior who apparently planned to make a quick stop by a girl’s home Oct. 10 to finalize details of giving her a ride to the St. Amant High School homecoming dance later that night, was killed when an argument between himself and another boy, Jacob Westbrook, 16, ended with Toups being fatally stabbed, authorities have said. Earlier that week, West-

In October, Derek Vidrine, an Ascension Parish man, who was hunting squirrels on his property shot down a neighbor’s drone that had been flying over his home off and on for several months, making his wife feel as though she was being watched, he said at the time. His neighbor and owner of the drone, Aaron Hernandez, denied the allegations, saying his camera-equipped drone could be flown only for short periods and flew too high to film people on the ground. It was one of several incidents that occurred this year nationwide involving drones, including a drone that crashed on the White House lawn and another one that came down into the University of Kentucky football stadium before a game with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. No arrests were made in the Oct. 6 incident in Ascension Parish. Recreational drones have been self-regulated up to now, but on Dec. 12, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that it would begin requiring drones to be registered to make it easier to identify owners and education hobbyists. The requirement covers aircraft weighing up to 55 pounds, including equipment mounted on them, such as a camera. Drone owners age 13 and older are required to register on an FAA website that became available Dec. 21, just before the wrapping paper came off of drones that were holiday gifts.

Adrian Laiche said the family wanted to build something patriotic. “We went to the Empower Air Show hosted by the World War II Museum in New Orleans, and then our uncle passed away,” Laiche said. “This is a combination of it all.” The replica of the naval aircraft is built to scale, with a 42-foot wingspan and a 9-foot tail. Construction of the plane has taken approximately eight men working 10 cumulative days to complete. This year’s workers include Mark Blackwell, Caleb Duplessis, Chad Duplessis, Chris Duplessis, Cody Duplessis, Courtney Laiche, Tyler Laiche, Chris Odom, Jason Pugh, Lance Villar and C.J. Young III. “We were all between the ages of 15 and 18 when we started doing this.” Laiche said. “A lot of families aren’t as close as we are. Our getting together each year to build a bonfire showed everyone just how close we are. We’re still doing this 14 years later. Cousins aren’t always this close. We are as close as siblings are in

other families,” Laiche said. Finding the wood to build these elaborate bonfires has become increasingly difficult each year. Usually, friends of the family offer wood. “If the water is up, like it is this year, we cannot even get close to the wood,” Jason Pugh said. Another concern is finding the particular type of wood that they need to build the bonfire. “Willow and sycamore is the straightest wood that grows in this area. Oak has too many breaks and edges in it,” Pugh said. This year, the wood came from private property in Geismar. What has, perhaps, impressed fellow family members and onlookers so much in the past has been the attention to detail given by the family to each bonfire built. “So far, on everything we’ve built, something moved or we added a visual affect. On the train we built last year, the bell rang. On the crane, the wrench lifted up and down. This year, the propeller on the plane will spin,” Villar said. This family holiday tradition has been woven into local legend. “It’s pretty exciting. One year, I was in the grocery store with my cousin, and I overheard someone say, ‘Did you see the big pirate ship bonfire?’ We said, ‘That’s us,’ ” Laiche said. “Even if people don’t remember our family name, they remember that we are the bonfire people.”

DONALDSONVILLE — A group of local high school students officially began the second year of a reborn program that involves

local youth in government. Returning and new members of the 2015-16 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council took their oaths of office during the Aug. 11 City Council meeting. MYAC’s mission is to serve as advocates for local youth to city government, addressing issues that affect local youth while also offering a chance to learn volunteer, leadership and civic skills. “MYAC’s motto is ‘Young People Leading the Way to

a Better Tomorrow,’ â€? said Tamiko Garrison, volunteer coordinator of the group. Garrison said the group was originally created in 1996, under then-Mayor Bernard J. Francis Sr., Garrison’s father. However, the group remained dormant until 2014, when current Mayor Leroy Sullivan Sr. and Garrison revived and restructured the program. schools Ascension school district maintains A Advocate staff report The 2014-15 school report cards released Dec. 17 by the Louisiana Department of Education show Ascension Parish public schools remains among the top performing districts in Louisiana. Ascension, with 27 schools districtwide, maintained its A rating for the fourth consecutive year with an overall score of 107.4, up from 106.9 last year, and is ranked No. 4 among public school districts in the state, a news release said. “I am immensely proud of the hard work by teachers, staff and school leaders that went into our district’s achievement scores,” Superintendent Patrice Pujol said. “We expected to see slight dips in scores this year as periodically happens when new curriculum and assessments are introduced. To be able to not only maintain our A ranking but also grow while implementing more rigorous standards is quite an accomplishment.” Twelve schools — Dutchtown Primary, Dutchtown Middle, Dutchtown High, Galvez Primary, Lake Elementary, Lakeside Primary, Oak Grove Primary, Prairieville

Primary, Prairieville Middle, Spanish Lake Primary, St. Amant Middle and St. Amant High — earned A grades. Eight schools earned B grades, four earned C grades and three earned D grades. There were no F grades this year, the second year in a row. Top Gains Schools, a designation awarded to schools with exceptional growth in performance score and/or progress of struggling students, were Dutchtown Primary, Dutchtown High and Spanish Lake Primary. “Last year, the state revamped student assessments to be more rigorous. Therefore, this year’s School Performance Scores are a new baseline upon which to build,” said Jennifer Tuttleton, Ascension’s director of school improvement. “While we are pleased that 14 schools were able to increase and perform very well despite the increased rigor, we will be looking for opportunities to replicate those best practices across the district. We will not rest until every child is successful,” Tuttleton said. For a complete listing of scores, visit louisianabelieves. com/accountability/school-letter-grades.

For some, training dogs to hunt is more than sport

Lifestyles, businesses and heritages are things that sometimes get passed from generation to generation. I remember as a kid my dad having a passion for the outdoors that included hunting and fishing. With six boys and two girls to feed, some of that passion was destined for sustenance, but mostly, it was for pleasure. I’ve passed that passion to my son Wesley and am passing it on to my grandchildren. Enter Todd Jackson, of Hodgeson Road, in Gonzales. Jackson is in his early 50s and has two children with his wife, Missy. He got his start in life hunting with his grandfather, Bernie Hodgeson, and his uncle, Carroll Hodgeson, when he was 5. The Hodgeson family settled on a land grant, a plantation with several thousand acres that was ASCENSION just on the outskirts of ATHLETICS present-day Gonzales LYLE JOHNSON before Louisiana became a state in 1812; hence the name Hodgeson Road. There is still over 400 acres of Hodgeson family land there today. The Hodgeson family men hunted and fished for sustenance. Jackson got his start hunting squirrels, coon, rabbits and deer with his granddad and uncle. “I made lots of money selling coon hides back in the day when I was a teenager with our dogs,” Jackson said.” I hunted rabbits with my Uncle Carroll a lot. Even when he got Alzheimer’s, we still took him into the woods up into his early 70s.” His granddad started him off still hunting for squirrels, but hunting with dogs was their passion. “We had coon dogs, beagles to hunt rabbits, deer dogs. Heck, we even had fox dogs to run foxes at night. Man, that was pretty cool to come up that way.” His son Gavin is having the same opportunity that Todd had. Gavin Jackson is a 17-year-old junior at Ascension Catholic High who has his eyes set on a chemical engineering degree at LSU when he finishes high school. But Gavin is following very closely in his father’s steps when it comes to the outdoors. “I knew since I was 5 or 6 years old that hunting and training dogs is what I wanted to do” Gavin said.” I really like to squirrel hunt with dogs because there’s a lot of action, you don’t have to be quiet and the social element just rounds out the fun. You can take part in this kind of hunting at a very early age, so it’s easy for kids to do.” He doesn’t remember it, but Gavin’s first time in the woods was in a sack draped around his dad’s neck, so he started pretty young

going into the woods. “I don’t remember when I first started going into the woods, but I do remember following my dad and the dogs in the woods.” As a matter of fact, he killed his first turkey at 5 years old with a .410 shotgun. Gavin killed his first squirrel and deer at the same age with the same gun. Gavin grew up like most boys, playing sports for fun and competition. “I played basketball and ran cross country and enjoyed them both, but they just didn’t hold the excitement of hunting and training those dogs.” A look inside his bedroom lets you know that he’s not quite like the average teen. There are no photos of Jeff Gordon or Dale Earnhardt Jr. There is a picture of Taylor, but it’s not Taylor Swift. It’s Taylor the squirrel dog and the competition they won. All of the game the Jacksons kill is eaten, but they really love the sport — so much so that Todd and Gavin raise their dogs for hunting and competition. The duo raises mountain curs for squirrel and coon hunting. The dogs compete in the Original Mountain Cur Breeders Association field trials. Gavin won his first competition

hunt at 9, pitting Taylor against 43 other dogs. The OMBCA qualifies a dog as champion when a competition hunt is won. The dog must add another 150 points by placing second or third in other hunts. Once a dog is crowned a champion, they can progress into a grand champion by competing against other champions. They own a grand champion trained by the younger Jackson — Gavin’s Lil Annie, a 6-year-old,

With that kind of gene pool to work with, the Jacksons have turned their hobby into a pretty good business of breeding, training and selling squirrel dogs. They fetch a healthy $600 or so for a pup and upwards for a trained dog. As a matter of fact, they’ve been offered Photo provided by MISSY JACKSON $17,000 for Lil Annie and turned it down. is their only grand champion. Lil It’s great to see a young man so Annie is one of only two female focused in his passion for huntdogs to win this competition.
