Riveting USO-style show honors vets BY C.J. FUTCH
cfutch@theadvocate.com The Old South Jamboree in Walker looked every bit the part of a World War II-era USO show April 8, complete with bandstand, a 10-piece band dressed in period costumes and a cast of 10 wearing victory rolls in their hair.
“We’re rehearsing for the show Friday (April 10), said Charlotte Reynolds, wearing matte red lipstick and a wool pencil skirt. She and her husband, Rob, the band leader, drummer and founder of the Denham Springs-based band, Rosie and the Swingin’ Riveters, are part of a cast of 20 who put on a radio play and swing

Being a missionary often requires living in less than ideal conditions for extended periods of time and going unrecognized for the many sacrifices necessary to serve people in need. The Rev. Val Taylor, lead pastor of Life Church in Walker, decided to create an event to honor missionaries for all their hard work. “Several years ago, I felt like celebrities always got the red carpet rolled out to them and I felt that if anybody needs to get the red carpet rolled out to them, it should be to people who give their lives to the cause of the gospel,â€? Taylor said. “A lot of times they’re not seen, but they help the homeless, they feed the hungry, they go into Third-World countries and they do things that nobody ever sees. No news media is carrying it, nobody knows about it, but God does.â€? Taylor birthed the idea of Red Carpet Weekend, a weekend filled with food, tours and meetings with state representatives to show appreciation to missionaries not used to red-carpet treatment. Some of this year’s events included a tour of Tiger Stadium, a meal at Drusilla’s Seafood Restaurant, a meet-and-greet with Sen. Dale Erdey at the Capitol and a fish fry. All meals and activities were paid for; the missionaries simply had to show up and enjoy. Nations throughout the world were represented by the missionaries present at Red Carpet Weekend, held Friday through Sunday. Pat Franks, one such missionary, has been working with churches in Cuba for 20 years, doing everything from preaching to buying mules to sending computers loaded with Bible teaching materials to pastors in the area. Franks explained getting into Cuba isn’t always a simple process. “I have to have a religious visa that is sponsored by a Cuban reliäSee MISSIONARIES, page 4G

Advocate staff report U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy talked to north shore residents for the first time since his election during an April 7 luncheon hosted by the Greater Hammond Chamber of Commerce, a news release said. Cassidy updated more than 160 guests on the efforts in Washington, D.C., covering topics including the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, the federal health care law, mental health and homelessness. Cassidy pointed out that big things are going on with the health care law as the Supreme Court prepares to make a decision in King v. Birdwell early this summer. The court could find that the law has been incorrectly implemented, he said, which would leave many Louisiana residents unable to afford insurance. “As many as 119,000 people may not be able to afford insurance if the Supreme Court finds against the federal government,” Cassidy said, noting
there is a backup plan being formulated should the court decide against the administration. The luncheon was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Southeastern Louisiana University Student Union and was sponsored by the Seale and Ross law firm. “We were very honored that Sen. Cassidy was able to come and update us on the forward to seeing how he will state of Washington, D.C.,” utilize his time in the Senate chamber President and CEO over the next six years.” Chris Brannon said. “We look The next chamber general

SHOW
Continued from page 1G show, she said, which was the kickoff of a weekend of activities meant to create an immersive environment at Sidney Hutchinson Memorial Park in Walker. “My husband has been building the pieces to re-create a wartime French village. Most of them have been under my carport for the last three weeks, but he’s started setting up the village now,” she said. “He would be even more elaborate if I didn’t kind of rein him in.” He does it, she said, because of a love for the era he developed as a child, listening to records with his grandmother. “He’s always loved that time period,” said Charlotte; and every year, they took a trip to the World War II Museum in New Orleans for his birthday. The museum has volunteers who work as actors in the living history program there, Reynolds said, all of whom dress in period costumes to give patrons a more authentic feel for what the time might have been like. The volunteer program fascinated Rob, and he began volunteering himself, learning about military dress code and searching for authentic uniforms or replicas. At first, she said, she was not interested in putting on wool uniforms. “I’ve also never been able to do my hair the way Miranda can,” she said, pointing to her daughter, wearing a party dress and victory rolls. But then, she began meeting veterans. “The first time I ever dressed up (at a Veteran’s Day parade), I had a veteran come up to me, unable to speak for a few minutes,” she said. “He was look-

If it was a powerful emotional experience for them, Reynolds said, that feeling was multiplied for her. After that, she didn’t need to be convinced. “I mean, why not honor them, and do something special for our veterans while they’re still here with us?” she asked. They began participating in re-enactments like the one they did this weekend, and volunteering with the living history program on weekends, and putting on shows at the Jackson and Reserve War Veterans’ Homes. “I can’t tell you how many wonderful people I’ve met along the way,” she said. Her eyes filled with tears more than once as she talked about the people she’s gotten to know, and who have died. One special veteran, Robert “Bob” Lyle, a Marine who served in the Pacific Theater,
died on Good Friday, she said. Lyle went to her church and was very close to her and her family. It made putting on the show harder to concentrate on, she said, but his wife, knowing how much the shows had meant to her husband in the past, delayed his memorial service until Sunday, after the show, in part to wait for traveling family to come in from out of town, but also in part to allow the reenactors a chance to attend. He was honored at the show along with Edwin “Eddie” Lohr, who died in February. Lohr served as a shooting instructor stateside. Reynolds said she and her husband enjoyed hearing the veterans’ stories so much that they decided to start documenting their memories, “otherwise that rich part of history would be lost to us,” she said, and she enjoyed the process so much she started seeking out other veterans and documenting their stories, as well. They became a resource for finding veterans for the museum’s video documentation project. This year, the WWII Mu-
seum, in recognition of the Reynolds’ contributions, sent the Victory Belles, a singing group that performs regular shows at the museum theater, to perform a few songs at the show. “It’s not a full show, but usually to see them live, you’d have to pay $30. Our show is $10,” she said. Proceeds from the Walker show went to supporting the Veterans’ War Homes. Reynolds pointed out that the effort of their band and the players, plus many other volunteers, is what makes the show a success every year. “And we want to keep doing it. We have swing dancers who will be performing off to the side, and the front area is where veterans dance, if they choose to,” she said. “They are why we do this.” Along with the Reynolds family, volunteers are actors Chase Bernard, Michael Verrett, his son Chris, Susan and Branden Burette, Toni Bennett, Tracey Ardoin, Patrick Mitchell and Michelle Morgan, who plays Rosie in the band. Other band members are Pris Ashworth, keyboards; Nathan Heck, bass; trumpeters Alan Honeysucker and Carey Griffin; trombonist Richard Kilpatrick; and saxophone players Jim Wilson, Brian Feigles and Stuart Sonnier. “We just love the era and the men and women who served. We want to thank them and let them know that they will not be forgotten,” Reynolds said, her eyes getting teary once again as she thinks about Lyle. The Reynolds’ recently completed a book about his life and service, she said, that is currently in shipment. a success story.
“I was an active, on-the-run, business owner until kidney problems brought my busy lifestyle to a dramatic halt. Over time, I became frustrated when I could not find a doctor who could help me. Finally, I found Dr. Lake at North Oaks. He and the North Oaks staff made my care a top priority. Within a few weeks after my procedure, I was pain free and back at the gym. Thanks to North Oaks Health System, I have my life back!”

‘Accalia and the Swamp Monster’ on exhibit Advocate staff report The Hammond Regional Arts Center’s “Accalia and the Swamp Monster Drawings” art exhibition by Kelli Scott Kelley is on display through April 30 at the center, 217 East Thomas St., Hammond. Kelley’s exhibition takes viewers on a journey through a haunted southern landscape, one populated by surreal swamp monsters, which can only be found during our nightmares after a chilling bedtime story, a news release said. Kelley, an associate professor at the LSU School of Art, drew upon Roman mythology, Jungian analysis and the psychology of fairy tales to create “Accalia and the Swamp Monster.” The exhibition features several of Kelley’s charcoal drawings along with mixed media works, painted and drawn on repurposed antique linens. The works together form the basis for Kelley’s fairy tale “Accalia and the Swamp Monster,” inspired by Kelley’s research into the lore of the Louisiana swamplands. “The fairy-tale-like story of Accalia and the Swamp Monster,” Kelley said, “is based on my own autobiography and dreams. The images in my artwork have often referenced fairy tales and fables, and so I became curious about writing a mythological narrative as a starting point for a series of artworks.” For more information call (985) 542-7113.
Community College, Northshore Technical Community College, Delta College or Baton Rouge Community College. Applications are available at covmande-la.aauw.net. The deadline for applying is May 25. Branch President Eileen deHaro said the organization recognizes that while four-year universities are important, so are community colleges. “AAUW changed their membership requirements several
years ago to include an associate degree or its equivalent from an accredited source as the minimum requirement for membership, and this scholarship program is an effort to reach out to those colleges and establish a working relationship.” AAUW designed the scholarship for students who may not necessarily qualify for traditional performance-based academic scholarships. DeHaro
said the committee is reaching out to women who want to better themselves through education, even if their past grades are not very good. “The ultimate goal is to help this student get a foothold toward a degree.” In addition to three letters of recommendation, applicants must also submit a resume. The resume should include anything that would describe the applicant’s accomplishments and future goals.

There is a superstition that if a player does not touch the bar before entering the stadium, the Tigers will face defeat. gious organization in order to be legal there. Sometimes we’re in favor, sometimes we’re not. I’ve been denied a visa on several occasions; right now I seem to be in favor, though.” Franks explained that although he is not always physically present, he is working year-round to support churches in Cuba through his ministry, Harvest International. “Throughout the year, I may only be down there one or two times, but while I’m here in the states I try to represent them and tell the churches what their needs are.” As a traveling missionary, Franks does not always receive support from a particular church, so for him it’s “a pretty exciting thing for itinerant ministries such as ours to come in and be celebrated. We go different places and speak, so when we get a church like this that says ‘We’re for you and we’re going to celebrate you,’ that’s exciting.” Bob Sayre lives in China with his pregnant wife, parents and kids, where they run an orphanage called Home of Hope. Sayre works to rescue children abandoned due to China’s “one child policy, which says you can only have one baby,” he said. “The problem that creates is if the baby comes out and is not perfect, it has a health defect, cleft palate, or it’s an albino they just throw them out on the streets,” he said. “What we do is we go find those babies, rescue them, take them in, give them surgeries if they need surgeries and give them a home to live in. We have 30 kids there, and the two ways we get the kids is either somebody brings them to us or we find them.” Since moving with his wife and kids to Alaska to enter the mission field in 1990, Odis Ganey has helped to plant 14 churches and has served in about 65 churches throughout the state. Ganey is originally from Walker but always felt a pull toward Alaska. “When I was 7 years old, God laid Alaska on my heart. I’m a Louisiana boy, but all my life Alaska had a special place in my heart and I couldn’t ever seem

It was tough at first, when we went to the first village we were the minority, so the kids got picked on a little bit, but it got better over the years. When God calls you, he enables you.” Red Carpet Weekend was started over 20 years ago, but Linda Janet has been the organizer for the past three years and is deeply inspired by the missionaries she helps host. “I just love missionaries and what they do. I’ve always read about them,” Janet said. “I’ve been impacted by Amy Carmichael and Heidi Baker, a current missionary in Pemba, Africa.” Janet also serves as the cochildren’s pastor at her church and regularly goes into the Rodeo Drive community in Denham Springs to bring children to church, so she considers herself a missionary, but has deep respect for those who leave their homes to do missions work. “I’m doing it from my home, but they actually leave their families to go out on the mission field.”
