Memorial to honor firefighters The Louisiana Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the State Fire Marshal office building, 8181 Independence Blvd. The ceremony is an annual event to honor Louisiana firefighters who died in the line of duty, said Louisiana State Fire Marshal H. “Butch� Browning and Louisiana Walk of Honor Foundation President V.J. Bella. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service that will include representatives from numerous fire departments, fire service organizations and families of deceased firefighters. In addition, this year’s event will mark the unveiling of a new monument honoring industrial firefighters who respond to and battle fires in the state’s chemical plants. Of the 106 names that adorn the walls of the memorial, two are those of firefighters who died in chemical plant fires in 1982 and 2011. “Whether it’s municipal, wildland or industrial firefighters, these men and women selflessly give of themselves every day to protect the citizens of this great state. Arts Market takes April off

The Arts Council’s downtown Arts Market is taking a break in April. The Arts Market will be held from 8 a.m. to noon May 2 at Fifth and Main streets. At the Baton Rouge Arts Market, more than 50 artists will present original works of art in a variety of mediums including pottery, jewelry, woodwork, textiles, photographs, glass, paintings, sculpture and handmade soaps. The event includes special art activities for kids, pet adoptions and other activities. The Arts Market is free and held alongside the Red Stick Farmers Market. Artists or craftsmen interested in taking part in future events can call Sandy Parfait at the Arts Council,

There are so many wonderful plants,� she said, walking from greenhouse to greenhouse, full of volunteers checking plant labels, adding prices, and moving pots to the shopping area at the LSU Agricultural Center Botanic Gardens at Burden. The East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners Program members began the process of potting and growing more than 7,000 plants of 250 varieties for the April 11 plant sale, to run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the gardens just off the Essen Lane exit for Interstate 10, beside Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. “It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,� Montgomery said, adding that the proceeds will support the master gardener’s program and will be shared with the Burden Center, funding educational activities like plant health clinics, school gardens, seminars for home gardeners and other programs at Burden. This year’s sale will also include a variety of gardening accessories donated to the society that will be sold “dirt cheap,� volunteer Cathy Mayer said, with a chuckle.

Socialization, stimulation key at Camp Bow Wow BY C.J. FUTCH

cfutch@theadvocate.com Drew Detlefs’ eyes almost never leave the screen of the television in his office at Camp Bow Wow, a day care center for dogs. He has cameras monitoring nearly all areas of the 14,000-square-foot facility on Pecue Lane. It is, so far, the largest Camp Bow Wow location in the country, he said, and he built it big for a reason. There’s a market for it. It was a slow day on a Tuesday in March when Detlefs pulled up

his day camp count. “We have 113 dogs here today. And that will pick up later in the week,â€? he said, eyes continually darting back to the cameras, which are available all day as a live stream for “pet parents,â€? as he calls his clients. In his busier times — and Easter/spring break is one of those — Camp Bow Wow has had as many as 189 dogs. Continued from page 1G our site at the office, because I guess people were spending too much time watching the live streams,� Detlefs said. “I had a couple of husbands call and beg me not to let their wives buy a cabin, because they’d be watching the dog sleep during vacation,� he laughed. Regular pens are available for overnight stays, but clients can upgrade to a cabin, which has an in-room camera that live streams to the website, and a television, tuned to either the Cartoon Network or Animal Planet. And for all those groaning at the thought of paying for doggy day camp, there are many happy clients whose dogs no longer destroy the furniture while they’re alone in the house, Detlefs said. “It’s socialization and stimulation,� he said. “Our counselors aren’t there to play with the dogs. “The dogs aren’t here for human interaction. They get some, but it’s very limited. That’s not the point. The point is interaction with other dogs. They come here to be a dog,� he said. And when they get home, they’re better able to relax. After an extensive interview process to spot any problems with aggression or anxiety, dogs are divided up by size and temperament. “Sometimes the dogs in the midsize pen will start getting their energy up too much,� Detlefs said. “We can bring a really calm larger dog with good energy in to bring that pen back a little,� he said, pointing out a large Doberman in the medium dog pen. Counselors’ main job is to keep the energy below the level that causes problems. Playing is good. Aggression isn’t, and there is a zero-tolerance policy for dogs that cause fights. Counselors walk the perimeter of the pens with a spray bottle to calm any aggression issues. There is also a hose in each pen for real emergencies, Detlefs said, but he can only count two times they’ve had to go that far. One of the services Camp Bow Wow provides is training for any issues the dog may have developed at home, said Patrick Ransom, on-site trainer at the camp. “It’s a great setup for training dogs, especially if they’re here all day. We can bring a dog in for multiple lessons on the same day, and give them play breaks in between,� Ransom said. That allows him to work with the dogs when they are at their most focused, and generally, that means less training is required. Often, Ransom said, just coming to Camp Bow Wow a couple times a week for a few hours resolves any behavioral problems at home. In addition, for all those dogs who don’t make the camp cut — only spayed or neutered dogs are allowed, and they must have a base level of socialization — there’s also a home-visit service called Home Buddies. “We have something for every situation,� Detlefs said. For Teresa King, an ear, nose and throat doctor with two golden retriever/poodle mixes, Camp Bow Wow was a game-changer. “I know, I used to be one of those people who thought, ‘Wait. Day care? For your dog? Are you serious? No way would I ever do that,’ � said King, who has been a client since Detlefs opened his facility a little more than a year ago. When Lucy and Coco reached about 7 months, “I couldn’t keep up with their energy needs,� she laughed. Now she brings the dogs twice a week, which is all they need to be calm at home. They’re so calm, she got them certified to be therapy dogs. “I take them twice a month to Pennington, to people being treated for cancer,� she said. “I’ve been a doctor for 71/2 years, and honestly, after a while, I was starting to get a little burned out,� she said. If bringing her dogs to camp twice a week made them better dogs, she said, bringing her dogs to Pennington has made her a better doctor. “It really speaks to what I got into medicine to do. I wanted to help people, and I have honestly been happier all around since I started this,� she said.

The Baton Rouge Area Chamber is accepting applications from Baton Rouge area educators for its BRAC Excellent STEM Educator Award program. Davanna Hart, who got the nickname “The Succulents Lady” because of her life-long passion for the plants, has been working with two other members of the Horticulture Society to arrange assorted succulent plants in shallow dishes, all of which will be offered for sale. “The most expensive one will be about $40, and the price goes down from there, depending on the size,” Hart said. “I love succulents because they’re survivors. These are plants you can leave on vacation, and they’ll still be alive when you come back and haven’t watered,” she said. More arrangements of cooking herbs and hanging baskets will also be available for sale. There will be a wide selection of Coleus varieties in the Coleus Corner. The plants grow well in Louisiana, Montgomery said, and have an astonishing diversity of textures and colors for the garden. “We will also have Coleus henna, a 2015 Louisiana Super Plant, available,” she said. Super Plants are picked for their performance in South Louisiana growing conditions, she said. Chicken Sauce Piquante Makes 5 Gallons Ingredients:

4 lbs. Manda Sausage or Manda Andouille 15 lbs. Boneless Chicken Meat 4 lbs. Onion (diced) 3 cans Green Chiles 4 Cans Diced Tomatoes 1 cup Diced Jalapenos

18 oz. Tomato Paste 2 tbs Minced Garlic 8 Chicken Bouillon Cubes 1 cup Flour 1 cup Vegetable Oil 1½ gallons Water (or 25 cups)

You may use either boneless chicken breast meat or boneless chicken thigh meat. But, we suggest a combination of the two. Cut the chicken and sausage into bite sized pieces. Bring the burner up to medium heat. Add the flour and the oil and stir to make a roux the color of chocolate. To do this, you have to keep stirring for 20-30 minutes, so the roux does not burn. Once the roux is formed, stir in the chicken, the sausage, the diced onion, chilies, and garlic so they are coated with the roux. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring so that the roux does not burn. Add the water, bouillon cubes, tomato paste, diced tomatoes and the jalapenos and stir very well so the roux is mixed well with the water. Bring to a boil, reduce and lightly boil for 10 minutes. Lower heat and simmer for 1 hour or until the meat is tender. Season to taste. Serve over rice or pasta.

The kindergartners at Runnels teamed up with their sixth-grade buddies on March 30 to tackle a 35-station circuit workout in connection with the school’s Zip Fit Challenge, a 50-day fitness initiative for students and faculty in honor of Runnels’ 50th anniversary. The circuit workout, which took place on the elementary playground, rotated kindergartners and their sixth-grade buddies through a series of fitness stations focusing on important skills like balance, jumping and hopping, core strength, tossing and catching, and coordination, a news release from the school said. The workout also emphasized fun and friends. “Today is all about active exercise and having fun together,” said kindergarten fitness teacher Mary Winnett, who planned and organized the event. “It’s a great opportunity to get in some fitness and spend quality time with our buddies.” Fitness is a regular part of the kindergarten curriculum at Runnels, Winnett said. Every day, students have two recesses for unstructured activity and 30 minutes of physical education called kindergarten fitness. Two days a week in fitness class, the kindergartners do stations such as frog jumps, agility ladder, tin can stilts and the tunnel crawl. “We have so much fun with our stations,” Winnett said, “we wanted to invite our buddies to join us.” On hand for the kindergarten and sixth-grade buddy circuit workout was Zip Fit Challenge co-coordinator and cross country and track coach Julie Fink. “The circuit workout epitomizes what we’re trying to do with the Zip Fit Challenge — fitness and fellowship,” she said. “We want to get students moving and we want to build friendships.” For the Zip Fit Challenge, which concludes with a school-wide pep rally on the Runnels softball field on April 13, students and faculty were assigned randomly to a gray, white or blue team. Each team member keeps a log of the number of miles he or she walks, runs, bikes, swims or spends in active exercise. Teams pool their miles to compete for prizes. Students participating in the kindergarten and sixth-grade buddy circuit workout were able to add 30 minutes of active exercise to their Zip Fit Challenge logs.
