Children participating in the Louisiana Art & Science Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Engineer It program on Saturday spent the afternoon learning about the water they use every day to stay hydrated, clean and fed. In Engineer It: Water Works, a team of engineers from MWH Globalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Baton Rouge office took turns answering questions about both our local water supply and water supplies in general. Engineer It is part of a series of lessons presented by members of Baton Rougeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local engineering community at the museum on the third Saturday of the month, said Sheree Westerhaus, planetarium educator. Last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s program was on bridge building, she said, and LASM is in the process of coming up with more ways to expose area students to engineering, in itself a combination of art and science. The design process for artists is very similar to the problem-solving process used by engineers, said Douglas Kennedy, communications coordinator for the museum. Students learned, when presented with brown water from the Mississippi River just outside the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doors, how the water they drink goes from dirty to clean. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get our water from the Mississippi River,â&#x20AC;? Thomas said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but the city of New Orleans does.â&#x20AC;? The students mixed in some potting soil to represent the silt and sediment that would normally be in water drawn directly from natural sources, then learned how municipalities go about cleaning the water up for residents. Jeff Duplantis, Sparkle Noble, Theresa Kelly-Brown and James Thomas, of MWH, led the students, ages 6 to 12, through the process of building their own water filtration system with recycled 2-liter bottles, sand and rocks. Jesse Noble, 8, paired up with Cale Carlisle, 7, at one end of their makeshift laboratory table while Cross Carlisle, 10, and Sadie Noble, 12, were at the other. Each station had coffee filters and the 2-liter bottle, cut in half. Following instructions from the engineers, the students put the coffee filter around the neck of the bottle, secured it with a rubber band, and inverted it into the bottom half of the bottle, which would be used to catch the filtered water. Students then added layers of sand and different-sized pebbles to the bottle top, and poured in the dirty water. What dripped out of the filter was still a bit cloudy, but was free of the potting soil â&#x20AC;&#x153;sediment.â&#x20AC;? The water we drink in Baton Rouge, Duplantis said, went through the same basic filtering process as the water on the lab tables, but used the ground under our feet as the filter layers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The water we drink in Baton Rouge fell in Mississippi hundreds of miles north of us in the time of the dino-

The test sites are sponsored by the American Garden Rose Selections and The American Rose Trials for Sustainability, Ellis said, and are mainly in response to the fact that roses that grow well in one region of the country may require much more maintenance, pesticides and fungicides to get the same blooms. “Apart from the initial watering to get the plant established, we’re looking for roses that will grow in the conditions we have, so don’t water, and use minimal pesticides,” she said. Lower maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance, Ellis stressed. Regular pruning is still necessary, and occasional treatments for insects may be required. Overall, however, the newer varieties that come out of the program — the first selection winners will be named in 2016 — should not need the weekly rotation of fungicides and pesticides normally needed. The LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden is one of 12 initial AGRS trial sites in the country. The U.S. selection program will include regional winners from the Northeast, Southeast, North Central, South Central, Northwest and Southwest. Trials for the second program, The American Rose Trials for Sustainability, began in 2014, and look at similar factors — the most disease- and pestresistant, hardiest and best garden-worthy rose varieties. The LSU AgCenter is also evaluating Kordes rose varieties for the Gulf South. Kordes is one of the world’s largest and oldest rose-breeding com-

They do not use fungicides in rose development and evaluations. Kordes roses are sold in the United States by NewFlora. “Disease resistance in hybrid teas, sustainability in rose growing and growing ‘own-root’ modern roses can be achieved with some of these varieties,” said Ellis. “Well-known, older Kordes varieties that we have successfully grown in Louisiana many years include Shreveport and iceberg.” Some of the newest Kordes hybrid tea and floribunda rose varieties being evaluated at the AgCenter Hammond Research Station and at the Botanical Gardens at Burden include Beverly, grand amore, pink enchantment, sunny sky, wedding bells, winter sun, Poseidon and summer sun. “Serious rose gardeners and members of the American Rose Society know these new varieties, but the average gardener is not yet knowledgeable on these

plants,” Ellis said. These evaluations are being done in cooperation with K & M Roses in Buckatunna, Mississippi, and Chamblee’s Rose Nursery in Tyler, Texas. The LSU AgCenter has many current recommendations to aid Louisiana rose growers as they select new varieties, Jeff Kuehny, director of the Botanical Gardens at Burden. The popular Belinda’s Dream rose has previously been named a Louisiana super plant by the LSU AgCenter and has now been named the Gulf District Rose of the Year for 2015 by the American Rose Society. The ground cover, dwarf landscape shrub Drift series roses with seven colors — apricot, red, pink, coral, popcorn, sweet and peach — are also Louisiana super plants. For patrons of the gardens who would like to see the gardens in bloom and support the center, the public is invited to Gourmet in the Garden, May 1

The Mind’s Eye is presented by NAMI Baton Rouge to raise public awareness of mental illness through free support groups and free educational programs, to raise funds to present these free programs and to create an opportunity for artists to showcase their work. All profits from sales of exhibited artwork will go to the artist. BRAC names leadership, business award recipients Advocate staff report The Baton Rouge Area Chamber announced award recipients honored at its annual shareholders’ meeting on March 24 at L’Auberge Casino Hotel. “We believe it’s important to recognize individuals and companies who display exemplary leadership through service to the region’s business community,” said Erin Monroe Wesley, executive vice president and chief operating officer of BRAC. Award recipients include: n Pamela Bounds, Berente Companies, Volunteer of the Year Award. n Patricia “Patty” McMurray, Adams and Reese LLP and 2014 chairwoman of BRAC’s Education Issue Council and BRAC board’s general counsel, D. Sheriff’s Office team wins Canine Association trials Advocate staff report The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office K-9 Team was named the 2015 United States Police Canine Association Region 10 Champion after a recent competition in Baton Rouge. The win comes six months after receiving the Top Dog award in the National Trials. Capt. James Broussard and K-9 Indo received the Top Dog award and took first place in patrol, agility, article search, box search and scent work in the local Regional Trials held last week. In October, Broussard and Indo attended the 2014 USPCA trials held in Wilson, North Carolina, where 46 agencies participated with 104

Police K-9 teams, representing 26 regions from the USPCA and were named the 2014 USPCA National Champions, making them the first-ever Region 10 team to win from Louisiana. In addition to Broussard’s win, the EBRSO K-9 Team took home the following awards at the trials: PATROL DOG RESULTS: Cpl. Diana Wales and Enzo, second place, criminal apprehension; Cpl. The Crowning Moment queens from around Louisiana participated in the recent Families Help Families of Greater Baton Rouge’s annual Active for Autism 5K. The local beauty queens made posters to cheer on runners along the route, took pictures with participants, provided entertainment and led the 1-mile walk for autism. President and founder of the Avoyelles Autism Network, Amanda Reed, came from Moureauville for the event. The Crowning Moment offers youth mentoring and pageant coaching to girls across the Gulf Coast. Boudin Stuffed Pork Chops

Ingredients: 1 package Manda Boudin 4 Thick Pork Chops ¾ cup Cream of Mushroom

Make a cut in the boudin’s casing and peel the casing away from the rice mixture. Discard the casing and pour the rice into a bowl (for food safety, wash your hands after discarding the casing). Mix the boudin mixture with the cream of mushroom. With a sharp knife, make a horizontal slit into the side of each pork chop to form a pocket for stuffing. Season the pork chops. Stuff each pork chop with the boudin mixture. Grill the pork chops and brush with BBQ sauce. The grilling time will vary depending upon the thickness of your pork chops. They usually cook for 40-60 minutes. Be sure the stuffing inside the pork chop reaches a temperature of 160°.

DeMouy shared a portion of his thesis, “Foreign Polyphony: Music Criticism’s Role in Representing Non-western Artists,” while Merchant shared a portion of his own research, “Enter the Clan: A Look into the History of Social Interaction in Video Games and the Impact of Online Multi-players on the Gaming Community.” Most of the work exhibited at the conference was presented by professional scholars, a news release said. Human resource group awards scholarships Advocate staff report The Greater Baton Rouge Society for Human Resource Management awarded two $1,000 scholarships during its March 19 meeting. Allison Mueller, of LSU, and Damien Parker, of Southern University, were awarded the scholarships. Student SHRM Chapters of each university led the meeting, a news release from the group said. Mueller is an undergraduate senior studying psychology and anthropology. During her first year at LSU, she led a research project under the supervision of Rebecca Saunders. She spent this past academic year as a student research assistant for Tracey Rizzuto’s human resources and industrial/ organizational psychology lab group, the release said. Mueller serves in leadership positions as the secretary of LSU’s People at Work Student Organization, the editorial committee undergraduate edi-

tor for the Tiger P@Ws Student Journal and the secretary of LSU’s Lambda Alpha National Anthropology Honor Society. She is also an active member of SHRM at LSU, Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society, the Psychology Club and the Geography and Anthropology Undergraduate Society. She plans a graduate degree and a career in human resource management. Parker is studying for a master’s degree in business administration. He graduated in May 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences. Parker is employed by Robert Half International as a human resources generalist. Some of the presentations I saw were ingenious and only helped to foster my curiosity, a feeling that I crave. Student awarded first Lamana scholarship Advocate staff report Lee High School’s Tamara Kay Fluker was named the recipient of the first Randy Dale Lamana Memorial Scholarship. The announcement came during East Baton Rouge Parish School Board’s April 16 meeting, which was held on the anniversary of Lamana’s death. The announcement was made by representatives of the Foundation for East Baton Rouge School System and members of Lamana’s family. Lamana represented District 11 on the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board and was the owner of Three B Services. Fluker has a 3.6 grade-point average and plans to attend Southern University. She is a member of the Beta Club and is taking college courses to help prepare her to become a nurse. She serves as a senior library aide in the Lee High Library and Media Center. She is active in her church, Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church where she is a member of the hospitality committee, a volunteer nursery worker and a member of

the choir. She was selected to participate in the Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response Program and has interned with the Big Buddy Program. She is a debutante with the Nu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. There were 29 applicants representing eight high schools in this first year of the scholarship.
