School for deaf opens learning village

BY C.J. FUTCH

cfutch@theadvocate.com Seven-year-old Lexus Pleasant made her way through a series of pint-sized buildings that are made just for children, but are tall enough to accommodate adults. There’s a specific reason why. “Teachers need to be able to get in there and teach lessons,” said Nancy Benham, principal at the Louisiana School for the Deaf, where the Lagniappe Children’s Village is located. The school dedicated the children’s Village during an April 21 ceremony. Since many of the children who attend this school are

there during the week overnight, many of them never get the opportunity to go with their parents to places like the bank, the doctor’s office, a police station, or other areas that can be intimidating the first time. The purpose of the buildings, situated in the center of campus, is to teach students how these places work, what terminology is commonly used, and how to communicate the idea behind, say, making an appointment with a doctor, using a train station, getting an oil change, or taking money out of the automated teller machine. There’s a lot of roll play involved, she said, including after-school hours with the dorm

staff, and the students love it. “They’re learning while they’re playing,” she said. Pleasant was having a great time at the April 21 ribbon-cutting to the village, which consists of 13 buildings and one gazebo — a wooden structure in the center of the village that began the whole process. It was built by high school students in woodworking classes, she said. The rest of the buildings were custom made for LSD by Lilliput Play Homes, a company that manufactures play structures. Through an interpreter, Pleasant said she liked the po-

Students Jacob Duval, Avery Plum Harris and Simon Hezel researched the gliding tree frog, a rainforest dweller, and not only were they able to discuss the common characteristics and life cycle of the frogs, they also were able to detail the different layers of habitat in the rainforest. Four Highland sites on LSU garden tour Advocate staff report

Hilltop tour

Highland Road will be the path to four gardens on the LSU Hilltop Arboretum’s spring garden tour, “Historical Highland Road Gardens, on Sunday. Tours will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the four garden sites in three subdivisions — Highland Ridge, Myrtle Hill and Knox Hill. On tour will be the gardens of Charla and David Wade in Highland Ridge subdivision; Dr. Anthony and Susan Ioppolo in Myrtle Hill subdivision, and Belinda and Charles King and Sherryl and Bob Tucker, both in Knox Hill subdivision. Visitors can start the tour at any of the four gardens. Visit lsu.edu/hilltop for tickets and a tour map. The LSU Hilltop Arboretum, 11855 Highland Road, also will be open during tour hours for plant shopping. On tour are: Wade garden, 16612 Autumn Ridge Ave., Highland Ridge subdivision The Wade home sits at the back of the subdivision with an elevation change undetectable from the street. From the front ridge, a 30-foot slope leads to the bottomland floodplain of Bayou Fountain. Alongside the driveway, a 100-foot stream begins with a

Bordering the shade garden are coral bark maple and bloodgood Japanese maple intermingled with parasols and a forest pansy redbud. The large drake elm offers nice shade to the deck. Nearby is a three-quarteracre pond with a central fountain and patio for bass, bream, catfish and carp to eat the food thrown by the automatic feeder. The pond is surrounded by cypress trees and lush plantings. Behind the house is the main patio, which features a large bottlebrush tree and a koi pond, where some of the fish are more than 20 years old. King garden, 10245 Knox Hill Court, Knox Hill subdivision In early spring, the pathway into the Kings’ old-fashioned Southern garden is filled with blooming Japanese magnolia trees and crape myrtles, while sweet olives and orange blossoms lend their fragrance to the air. In 1999, the couple’s yard was transformed from a sloping grassy backyard into a beautiful oasis. The original landscape and pool designer/architect, Eduardo Jenkins, held on to the home’s original redwood octagonal deck and designed around it to create a series of waterfalls cascading into lagoon-style pools. The caladium-lined pond adds to the calm and cools the vine-covered deck, creating

an almost year-round refuge. An abundance of ginger, plumbago, split leaf philodendron, roses, agapanthus and a variety of ferns, cast irons and daylilies grow in the numerous beds providing fodder for beautiful arrangements. Tucker garden, 10229 Veranda Court, Knox Hill subdivision The Tuckers built their house in 1987, planting numerous azaleas and trees to complement the lot and saving an old pecan tree from the original Knox estate. A pond in the back of the yard borders Bluebonnet Swamp. “We have to deal with quite a bit of wildlife out of the swamp, including numerous desirable and undesirable critters, Bob Tucker said. They constructed gravel paths through their backyard, winding among numerous large George Tabor azaleas, dwarf azaleas and Indian hawthorns. Their plantings include river birches, Japanese magnolias, holly hedges and beds for a small raised vegetable garden, annuals and hydrangeas. The paths connect the pool area with a recently added outdoor cooking pavilion and the pond, where bald cypresses and dawn Photo provided by LSU Hilltop Arboretum redwoods, which were acquired at the Hilltop Arboretum Plant Garden of Charla and David Wade in Highland Ridge subdivision Sale over 25 years ago, stand.

Advocate staff report A standing room only crowd of more than 200 members of Goodwood Property Owner’s Association attended the organization’s annual membership meeting April 21 to learn details of the recent traffic study conducted by the city-parish’s Department of Public Works, a news release said. The meeting was held at the Our Lady of Mercy Parish Activity Center, a news release said. Ingolf Partenheimer, the cityparish’s chief traffic engineer, said many –– but not all — of the Old Goodwood neighborhood streets that were part of the traffic calming study, which took place in late 2014 and early 2015, experienced reductions in traffic and speeding. The traffic calming study included temporarily converting several two-way streets to one-way traffic, putting up stop signs and other measures, Partenheimer said. Partenheimer said his department continues to study the results of the changes. He said the Old Goodwood traffic study was one of the largest ever conducted by the city-parish. Area residents will have input regarding which,

Association members also heard reports from GPOA Vice President Norman Ryan and police Capt. Stephen Browning, coordinator of the association’s Private Police Patrol, regarding safety in the area. Ryan said Old Goodwood ranks among the safest neighborhoods in Baton Rouge, the release states.

of the habitat, that the canopy of the rainforest, at the top, has different conditions than the forest floor. In addition to the rainforest frogs, students studied desert and wetland frog species, which included both common and endangered amphibians. As parents moved from room to room, they were able to see the work their children had been toiling over for the last six weeks, and far from being grossed out by the experience, they were elated. “My son said it was the ‘best day ever,’ ” Kendyl Worrell laughed, recalling the day her son Oscar came home and told her about dissecting the frog.

dren use the village buildings. “It gets them involved, even though they may feel too old to use the play houses,” he said. Benham said she got the idea to create the village because a similar set up worked well at her last school in Pennsylvania. But they’re not just learning about the hearing world around them, Benham said. They’re also learning about deaf culture and Louisiana culture, all of which were carefully incorporated into the names of the

buildings and the curriculum that will be used to teach them. Buildings are named after Dummy-Hoy, the first deaf professional baseball player; Mayflower, which is the street the original LSD was located; Thomas Hopkinds Galadet, considered the founder of modern education for the deaf and hard of hearing; and Alice Cogswell, the deaf child who inspired his search for methods to educate the deaf. “We tried to make it as rich as possible in all those ways,”

“He absolutely loved it.” The students are incorporating lessons drawn from science, reading and art with the exercise, and it’s always a big hit with students and parents alike, Sarah Savoie, another first-grade teacher said. “They also dissected owl pellets. We found them on Amazon,”

Savoie said. They found and identified bones from shrews, rats and other animals, she said. First-grade teacher Michelle Zarei said it’s something they all look forward to, and it’s a great learning experience for the students, particularly when it comes to public speaking and group research.
