School for the Deaf opens learning village BY C.J. FUTCH
cfutch@theadvocate.com Seven-year-old Lexus Pleasant made her way through a series of pint-sized buildings that are made just for children, but are tall enough to accommodate adults. There’s a specific reason why. “Teachers need to be able to get in there and teach lessons,” said Nancy Benham, principal at the Louisiana School for the Deaf, where the Lagniappe Children’s Village is located. The school dedicated the children’s Village during an April 21 ceremony. Since many of the children who attend this school are there during the week overnight, many of them never get the opportunity to go with their parents to places like the bank, the doctor’s office, a police station, or other areas that can be intimidating the first time. The purpose of the buildings, situated in the center of campus, is to teach students how these places work, what terminology is commonly used, and how to communicate the idea behind, say, making an appointment with a doctor, using a train station, getting an oil change, or taking money out of the automated teller machine. There’s a lot of roll play involved, she said, including after-school hours with the dorm staff, and the students love it. “They’re learning while they’re playing,” she said. Pleasant was having a great time at the April 21 ribbon-cutting to the village, which äSee VILLAGE, page 5G

St. George Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chad Roberson has been accepted into the third year of the Fire Service Executive Development Institute, the International Association of Fire Chiefs announced. Roberson competed with new fire chiefs and chief officers from Roberson across the country to become a member of the 2015 program. Roberson also has been awarded a scholarship to cover the expenses for attending the program, a news release from the St. George Fire Department said. The Fire Service Executive Development Institute is a year-
long leadership development program created and implemented by the IAFC to provide new and aspiring fire chiefs with the tools needed to have successful and productive tenures, the release said. The institute will meet in May for its first six-day session, in addition to two other sessions six months apart. The group will communicate between sessions using an online community. Roberson has 27 years of experience and rose through the ranks of the St. George Fire Department. He holds an associate degree in fire science, a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree. He also has completed the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program and, in 2011, was awarded professional accreditation as a certified fire officer, the release said.

An abundance of ginger, plumbago, split leaf philodendron, roses, agapanthus and a variety of ferns, cast irons and daylilies grow in the numerous beds providing fodder for beautiful arrangements. “We have to deal with quite a bit of wildlife out of the swamp, including numerous desirable and undesirable critters,” Bob Tucker said. They constructed gravel paths through their backyard, winding among numerous large George Tabor azaleas, dwarf azaleas and Indian hawthorns. Their plantings include river birches, Japanese magnolias, holly hedges and beds for a small raised vegetable garden, annuals and hydrangeas. The paths connect the pool area with a recently added outdoor cooking pavilion and the pond, where bald cypresses and dawn redwoods, which were acquired at the Hilltop Arboretum Plant Sale over 25 years ago, stand.

schools Students portray objects in first Space Pageant Advocate staff report To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope, fifth-graders at Shenandoah Elementary School participated Friday in the school’s first Space Pageant. Seventy-five students dressed as self-selected celestial bodies and entered as contestants in the pageant. Contestants researched their ce-
lestial bodies and created costumes for the event. During the event, the contestants displayed their celestial bodies and answered interview questions for the judges and audience. James Kuterbach, who took on the part of “Father Time,” and Kathrin Mundinger McGregor, who portrayed “Mother Earth,” said they created the pageant to increase student awareness of the vast universe.

Runnels School third-graders have “traveled” to foreign shores in their reading class this year, and they learned more about several destinations April 17 during the annual Trip Around the World day. Students took in the sights and sounds of several of the faraway places they’ve learned about without ever leaving the comfort of the school campus, a news release from the school said. For the tour, classrooms were transformed into five destinations: France, Scotland, China, Mexico and Australia. Using passports they made in class, third-graders stopped at each port of call to learn a about its culture, language, landmarks, attractions and cuisines. At the France station, students learned about the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre and had an art lesson about famous French masters. They stomped grapes in the tradition of French winemakers and learned that a bottle of champagne contains about 50 million bubbles. Students ate croissants while listening to Edith Piaf. The tour of Scotland included a sing-along to bagpipe music, a Gaelic language lesson and an introduction to the British pound sterling. Students tried on kilts, learned about tartan plaids and coats of arms and viewed the highlands, the lowlands, lochs and castles. Upon entering the classroom on China, students removed their shoes in the Asian

tradition, heard the story of “Lon Po Po” or “Little Red Riding Hood” and became acquainted with the history of the fortune cookie. They also tried picking up grains of rice with chopsticks. At the Mexico stop, students learned where the Spanish language originated and where it is spoken. They were taught the Spanish names of a few colors and numbers and then used their new vocabulary words to request sheets of red, orange, or yellow tissue paper to make huge traditional flowers, which have been used as decorations in Mexico since preColumbian times. Students also sampled churros and broke piñatas. On the tour of Australia, students picked up information on the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House and the Outback. Students learned about the platypus and echidna, egg-laying mammals unique to the land down under. A highlight was passing around a boomerang. Serving as tour guides were third-grade parent volunteers. “We always have many volunteers for this project,” said third-grade reading teacher Lisa Harris, who organized the project. “Parents knowledgeable about particular countries enjoy sharing what they know with students. They always add something new to the project — new crafts, vocabulary, ideas and foods.” At the end of the tour, the travelers had lunch featuring dishes from around the world.

Kenilworth students get excited about science
Advocate staff report
Kenilworth Science and Technology School teacher Kate Williams was surprised with the reaction she got to the suggestion that her students stay after school to learn more about science. Back in September, she thought she might get a few students to agree to stay after school twice a week, two hours a day, to learn a little more science and put a team together to participate in the Louisiana Science Olympiad. More than a few responded, a news release from the school said.
“The kids love being here after school. I was not expecting that at all,” Williams said. “Now, I’ve become really passionate about opportunities for students outside of the classroom.” The third-year teacher from Utah got enough support from her students to form a team for the science competition. The 15-student Kenilworth team made a strong showing as the only middle school representing East Baton Rouge Parish at the Louisiana Science Olympiad. Kenilworth finished in second place in the “robocross” category, a team competition
using robotics, the release said. “We were first-timers at the Olympiad, but even placing in one category is great,” Williams said. “The kids were so excited. They’re already talking about next year.” The Louisiana Science Olympiad features teams of students that must execute a gauntlet of science experiments, tests and demonstrations. This year’s event was held on April 18 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. St. John Berchmans Cathedral Catholic School in Shreveport finished first in the overall middle school competition. Williams credited her fellow
teachers and the Kenilworth administration for supporting the students in their first year of competition at the Olympiad. “I had a lot of help,” Williams said. “A lot of the science teachers are willing to put in a lot of extra hours, and Mr. (Hasan) Suzuk, our principal, really trusts his teachers. We’re all working toward giving the kids a place where they feel successful.” Kenilworth is an open-enrollment public charter school that offers free tuition and transportation for students entering the sixth through eighth grades in East Baton Rouge Kate Williams Parish.

VILLAGE
Continued from page 1G consists of 13 buildings and one gazebo — a wooden structure in the center of the village that began the whole process. It was built by high school students in woodworking classes, she said. The rest of the buildings were custom made for LSD by Lilliput Play Homes, a company that manufactures play structures. Through an interpreter, Pleasant said she liked the police station, the hospital, the deli and the bank. “Pretty much everything. Can I go play now?” she said. It is, obviously, well received by students. Staff also use the village as a way to incorporate service learning, said fifth grade teacher Brian Cheslik, who was instructing his students on how to help the younger children use the village buildings. “It gets them involved, even though they may feel too old to use the play houses,” he said. Benham said she got the idea to create the village because a similar set up worked well at her last school in Pennsylvania. But they’re not just learning about the hearing world around them, Benham said. They’re also learning about deaf culture and Louisiana culture, all of which were carefully incorporated into the names of

CALENDAR
Continued from page 1G to room, they were able to see the work their children had been toiling over for the last six weeks, and far from being grossed out by the experience, they were elated. “My son said it was the ‘best day ever,’” Kendyl Worrell laughed, recalling the day her son Oscar came home and told her about dissecting the frog. “He absolutely loved it.” The students are incorporating lessons drawn from science, reading and art with the exercise, and it’s always a big hit with students and parents alike, Sarah Savoie, another first-grade teacher said. “They also dissected owl pellets. We found them on Amazon,” Savoie said. They found and identified bones from shrews, rats and other animals, she said. First-grade teacher Michelle Zarei said it’s something they all look forward to, and it’s a great learning experience for the students, particularly when it comes to public speaking and group research.
