Besides volunteering, VIPS is helping schools by creating partnerships with area businesses and organizations through Partners in Education. LSU’s College of Human Sciences and Education participates in the program. “We have so much human capital and human resources and kind hearts and hands that will hopefully be able to make a difference,” said Renée Boutte Myer, outreach and advocacy coordinator for the college. Myer participated in a recent VIPS Principal for a Day program, where Partners in Education representatives were paired with principals in East Baton Rouge public schools. State leaders plant oak

Advocate staff report State officials joined members of the Society of American Foresters on Nov. 2 to plant a live oak tree near the State Capitol. The tree was planted at Fourth Street and Spanish Town Road to commemorate the opening of the national Society of American Foresters convention in Baton Rouge. The national meeting, the first of its kind in Louisiana’s capital city, was Nov. 3-7. The professional society, headquartered in

Bethesda, Maryland, includes foresters, wildlife managers, and educators in the forestry field along with students enrolled in forestry curriculums. “We are excited to be bringing more than 1,400 forestry professionals to Louisiana,” said Matt Menashes, the chief executive officer for the SAF. “The Bayou state is special because this is where all the natural resource professions, from forestry to wildlife and fisheries management, from oceanography to geology, and from geography to economics,

remain so important, so essential to the people of the community.” The live oak represents “one of the hardiest trees that survived hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” said C.A. “Buck” Vandersteen, program director for the convention who is also the executive director of the Louisiana Forestry Association. On hand for the planting were Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain, State Forester Wade Dubea and SAF President Robert Alverts.

City, Kansas, to Baton Rouge. International trips have led Nee along trails from Quebec City, Quebec, through the Canadian countryside to Nova Scotia and then on a ferry to Portland, Maine. “You meet the best people out there,” Nee said. “People are friendly and helpful. They’re interesting to talk to. It’s just awesome.” It was Nee’s younger brother and occasional longdistance bike partner, Scot Nee, who inspired him to think about a trans-American bike trip. “I need to do this before I get too old,” Nee said, and the brothers began planning. They began their transAmerican trip in Bellingham, where relatives lived, on June 1. The pair carried all they would need, including camping supplies, extra fleece clothing and a stove, Nee said. Once they made it through the snow-capped Cascade and Rocky mountain ranges, the brothers shipped home 24 pounds of gear they wouldn’t need in the warmer regions of the country. They carried about three days of food on them, usually dining on tuna fish in a pouch or canned franks and beans for lunch and dinner, and shopping in towns each time they needed groceries, Nee said. The brothers always ate a big breakfast in mom-andpop-type restaurants to fuel them for the day’s ride, Nee said. “French toast got me across America,” Nee said, adding he lost 25 pounds on the 71-day trip. The pair spent just nine nights in a hotel and took only five days off from their journey to rest and sightsee, Nee said. They traveled through 15 states and rode more than 1,000 miles of the journey on the “rails-to-trails” program, where railroad tracks have been replaced with bike and walking paths, Nee said. Nee will never forget several moments of the journey. One night while camping at Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, Nee left his tent to find the bathroom. He noticed a beautiful waxing moon amid stars in a crystal-clear sky and there was the silhouette of Devils Tower, a geological wonder more than 1,200 feet high, standing before him. “A sight like that,” Nee said. “It just sticks with you. You think to yourself, ‘How many people get to see this?’ ” The brothers also spoke with a man at Devils Tower who had inquired if they had seen any rock climbers. They told the man where to look and continued on with their trip. More than a month later, while sightseeing on their bicycles in Washington, D.C., the same man spotted them at an outdoor concert and asked if Nee was the man he had spoken to at Devils Tower. “It blew my mind that he recognized us,” Nee said. Other highlights of the trip included touring the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington, seeing the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument in Montana, riding the Coeur d’Alene Trail in the Idaho panhandle and visiting the Great Serpent Mound in Ohio. Once the brothers got through Washington, D.C., they had two days of hard riding, traveling more than 100 miles each day to get to Virginia Beach on time. The men were ready to be done with the trip. “We’re like a horse heading for the barn door,” Nee said. Once they rode into Virginia Beach, they ended their trip by dipping their front bicycle tires in the Atlantic Ocean just as they had dipped their rear tires in the Pacific Ocean to start their trip on the West Coast. “It was a good conclusion to a great bicycle ride,” Nee said.

VIPS

Continued from page 1G schools are like and to create relationships. Through the program, VIPS hopes to dispute misconceptions about public schools. Through previous volunteer work and the College of Human Sciences and Education, Myer said she already is aware of the challenges facing public education in the parish. Britten and Myer noted that one challenge they faced in the partnership is scheduling conflicts between LSU and the elementary school, but overall the program is reciprocally rewarding. Through the program, LSU students can receive credit for reading or helping with math in the schools. “We’re helping to produce some good citizens,” Britten said, “so we’re starting young to build the character, the values, as well as educational aspects of our students.” Myer believes it is important for the university, and the College of Human Sciences and Education in particular, to partner with the school because it is committed to public education in Louisiana.

1 package Manda Sliced Bacon 1 slice Manda Hot Pepper Cheese

Make a cut in the boudin’s casing and peel the casing away from the rice mixture. Discard the casing and place the rice into a bowl (for food safety, wash your hands after discarding the casing). Butterfly cut the pork tenderloin by cutting the tenderloin lengthwise ¾ of the way through. After butterfly cutting the tenderloin, you should be able to open the tenderloin like a book. Lay the sliced bacon (side by side) in a row the length of the tenderloin. Lay the cut tenderloin over the sliced bacon so when you close the tenderloin, the bacon will already be under the tenderloin and easier to wrap. Break the cheese into pieces then place into the opened tenderloin. Fill the opened tenderloin with the boudin mixture. Close the tenderloin then wrap each piece of bacon around the closed tenderloin, using toothpicks to hold each piece of bacon. The stuffed tenderloin should be completely wrapped in bacon from one end to the other end with toothpicks sticking out the sides. Grill the stuffed tenderloin until cooked thoroughly. Be sure the boudin mixture in the center of the tenderloin reaches 160oF (approximately 45 minutes over an indirect medium heat fire). Once cooked, remove the tenderloin from the grill, and let sit 10 minutes then remove toothpicks, slice and serve.

Advocate staff report Runnels School Advanced Placement statistics students recently spent several class periods in the school parking lot working on an observational study to determine whether teachers or students are better parkers. The students selected 24 student cars and 24 teacher cars in the main campus parking lot for the study. Parking scores were determined by measuring the distance from the parking lines to each tire. The difference between the side wheels (on both sides), the rear wheels and the front wheels was calculated and then added together to determine the parking score. The lower the number, the better

the parking score, a news release said. Students judged “good parking” to mean that a car was straight and centered in a parking spot, AP statistics teacher Karen Matthews said. One class added a penalty if a car’s bumper extended over the front of a parking space, while the other class added penalty points if a car sprawled over a side line, the release said. Matthews said less than one point separated the teachers from the students, with the teachers just edging out the students. The result was declared a tie because there was no statistically significant difference between the scores. In the two previous years, the students were declared the winners.

Runnels educator named Math Teacher of the Year Advocate staff report The Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics named Runnels School teacher Mark Landry the 2015 Outstanding High School Math Teacher of the Year on Nov. 10 at the River Landry Center. The award was presented at the Joint LATM/Louisiana Science Teachers Association Conference and included a $200 prize, a commemorative plaque and complimentary one-year memberships to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and LATM. Candidates were evaluated on educational background, teaching experience, participation in professional development, letters of recommendation and a reflective essay on teaching philosophy and practices. Landry, a 22-year faculty member at Runnels, teaches advanced placement calculus and advanced math. Five Runnels math teachers were nominated for LATM awards this year, including Runnels Math and Science Department head Karen Matthews,

who was a finalist for the Outstanding Math Educator Award.
