The casts of ghost-hunting TV shows have made their way through the building’s hallowed halls, each reporting something different. Opened in 1847, the Louisiana Old State Capitol has stood the test of time, and many know the historical events that occurred, such as the impeachment proceedings for former Gov. Huey P. Long. Not many, however, know Confederate Gov. Henry Watkins Allen is buried in the building’s lawn. Museum curator Lauren Davis said after the Civil War, Allen fled to Mexico, as did many other members of the Confederacy. He died in 1866, and his body eventually was moved to Lafayette Cem-

“That’s the worst thing that ever happened to me, in there,” Smith said. A maintenance supervisor, Smith has worked at the Old State Capitol for the last eight years. During his time in the 168-year-old building, he’s had his fair share of scares. Smith had a paranormal experience before he worked at the Old State Capitol and said he’s not sure who the ghost might be, if that’s what it was. The bathroom incident is the only physical paranormal experience Smith said he’s ever had on the Old State Capitol grounds, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t come in contact with other ghostly spirits he claims are roaming the halls. There’s a hot spot — a place with a sign of ghost activity— in the basement, which functioned as a prison and hospital during the Civil War, Smith said. He’s heard the click-clack of shoes roaming

Gloria LeBlanc spent the last Wednesday of the year the same way she spends most Wednesdays. She had her morning cup of coffee, exercised with around 40 of her friends and played board games at BREC Independence Park with members of the Busy Bodies. It’s a routine LeBlanc recommends for other seniors in the Baton Rouge area. Sheila Smith, the center’s head of adult leisure programs, said she stays busy organizing several senior programs for folks like LeBlanc who want to stay active. She started her day supervising the assembly of new table tennis equipment. In a room at the back of the park’s community center, Smith pointed to a photo of the Busy Bodies group. “Don’t they look like they’re having fun?” Smith said, adding that the exercise program stresses low-impact movement for cardiovascular conditioning. Smith said having fun while you exercise is a key to keeping fitness in your routine. Smith, 82, who has worked

Cheryl Michelet, director of communications for BREC, said programs like the senior exercise group and a popular Tea Dance held every week at BREC’s main building on Florida Boulevard provide seniors a way to stay active. The Tea Dance, which gets its name from its afternoon

start, draws a crowd of around 100 each week who enjoy refreshments and dancing. Musicians perform “high energy” music, Smith said, adding that the seniors enjoy fastpaced dances and “not that slow stuff.” The dance has been around for more than 30 years and has seen a few marriages and courtships blossom. His plot is designated with a marker. “It’s probably a good thing he (was) brought back here because it was a special place to him,” Davis said. Surprisingly, Davis said, Allen’s haunting story isn’t the one people latch onto when the topic of ghosts in the Old State Capitol arises. Davis said one of the most popular stories is that of Pierre Couvillion, a senator from Avoyelles Parish who, as legend has it, had a heart attack around 1852 in the Senate chamber during a heated argument. She said she doesn’t know how the story got started, but it’s possible Couvillion didn’t even die in the building. She said most signs point to him dying elsewhere. “All I ever have found is that there’s no proof that he ever died here. It seems like he just died at home, probably of a heart attack,” Davis said. Just because Couvillion probably didn’t die in the Old State Capitol doesn’t mean others didn’t perish on the grounds. Davis said several Civil War battles took place around the grounds of the Old State Capitol in what is now downtown Baton Rouge. “Did people die in this area? Yes. This building has been here since 1849, so I’m sure there are some secrets on these grounds somewhere,” Davis said. One of those “secrets” is that of Sarah Morgan, a spirit the museum staff created to tell the story of the Old State Capitol’s history to tour groups. In the exhibit, “Ghost of the Castle,” Morgan takes visitors through the Capitol’s many hardships, from the Civil War era to present day. While Morgan is based on a real person of the same name, the haunting was created for the enjoyment of museumgoers. Whatever’s in the basement might be another story.

For 35 years or so, Jo E. O’Neill has hosted a Christmas Eve celebration reminiscent of the tailgate parties after LSU games that her parents, Joe and Josie Ragusa, enjoyed with their friends and family. Josie Ragusa was known for her homemade biscuits at the party. Her best friend, Isaure Manda, brought the Manda’s sausage and somebody would scramble eggs. The family gathers on Christmas Eve to enjoy the same meal, where Jo E. now prepares the biscuits. After the food, the family retires to the living room to sing Christmas carols. Son Raph O’Neill provides the music for the sing-along. 200 bags of clothes are delivered to needy kids Advocate staff report On Dec. 22, the Baton Rouge Sanitary Sewer Overflow Program delivered more than 200 stuffed clothing bags to the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services as part of the program’s first Bags 2 Pack initiative. The bags, filled with a variety of blankets, soft toys, socks, gloves, accessories and toiletries, will be distributed to boys and girls of all ages in the foster care system. SSO Program staff also volunteered for the DCFS annual Christmas event, which provides gifts and goodies to children and parents in the foster care system, a news release said. DCFS Secretary Suzy Sonnier said she hoped that everyone who donated to the initiative understood what an impact it would make in the lives of so many children. spond to meet interestsâ&#x20AC;? of the residents, she said. Renovation projects have started at several parks, and residents should see improvements all around town. Recent renovations at the Florida Boulevard facility included updates to its upper deck area. Batting cages and workout areas were added so children and adults can exercise together. The area also features pingpong, video games and inflatables. Michelet said it is important BREC provides spaces where people of different ages can get together â&#x20AC;&#x153;to have a good time.â&#x20AC;? Many parks will see added

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an indoor track at the North Sherwood Forest Park so residents can walk or run in bad weather. The Independence Park center has indoor tennis courts. BRECâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two BREC on the Geaux mobile units even bring exercise to parks and neighborhoods to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The mobile units were purchased thanks to a partnership with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation. LeBlanc said she appreciates the effort BREC put into providing ways residents can stay

active. She credits BREC and its programs with â&#x20AC;&#x153;saving my life.â&#x20AC;? Smith said many of the Busy Bodies members turned to the program after an illness or death of a spouse. Leblanc, Sallie Segura and Janet Davis â&#x20AC;&#x201D; all members of Busy Bodies â&#x20AC;&#x201D; said they enjoy the friendships theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made and the opportunity they have to get together every week. The trio said they plan to continue meeting three times a week this year at the BREC park. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just love it here,â&#x20AC;? Segura said. Grilled Ham n Swiss Melt Ingredients: Sliced Tomatoes Sliced Manda Ham, French Bread Four Star Ham or BBQ Sauce Chef Master Ham Olive Oil Sliced Swiss Cheese (or another cheese of your choice)

Cut the French bread in half lengthwise. Lightly brush the bottom of the bread with a thin coat of olive oil. Lay the two pieces side by side, be sure to keep each piece separate (open faced). Spread some BBQ sauce on each piece. Top each piece with sliced ham, sliced tomato, and sliced cheese. Grill the two ham melts so that the bread is crisp and cheese is melted (usually 3-6 minutes). After grilling, slice the two melts into 1-inch slices and serve.

Runnels School eighthgrader Minna Ismail enjoys time out between midterm exams on Dec. 15 with Cooper, a rescue puppy from the Baton Rouge Companion Animal Alliance. Cooper and several other rescue dogs from CAA and Bark and Roll Rescue visited with students to provide stress relief from exams. Three dogs participating in the program, including Cooper, found homes with Runnels families thanks to the project.

Episcopal High luncheon celebrates research students

Gathered together during a luncheon at Episcopal High School’s Alumni House Parlor in December are, seated from left, Episcopal Students Take Action in Advanced Research students Aaron Miller, Adair McCanless and Diamond Spears; and back, Upper School Division Head Dr. David Perkinson, teachers Betsy Minton and Melissa Estremera and Associate Head of School Dr. Jewel J. Reuter. The students conducted research at LSU this fall, collaborating with professors and the faculty at Episcopal High School. The resulting papers were accepted to the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. The luncheon with the students’ mentors and teachers was arranged to celebrate their accomplishments.

The Runnels School community helped provide holiday gifts for 100 disadvantaged children in the area through the project. The Senior Beta Club also collected eight barrels of food and nearly $600 in donations for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

The Runnels School community has participated in the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign for many years. With three full boxes of toys for the project are Runnels elementary and preschool secretary and Toys for Tots organizer Pamela Culp, in back, and, from left, elementary students Lily Hayden, Nicholas Bell and Alyssa Oubre.

Runnels students come up with Louisiana-flavored play Advocate staff report Students in Neena Kelfstrom’s high school playwriting/directing class at Runnels School are working with Playmakers of Baton Rouge to develop a script for the troupe’s annual Spring Educational Elementary School Tour, a news release said. The play, titled “My Habitat is Where It’s At,” will be performed by professional actors in Louisiana schools from February through May. Playmakers Education/Tour Director Danielle Adams and professional actors Maggie McGurn and Joshua Allred, who are members of the spring touring cast, visited the school in early December to help the students prepare the script for production. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to see the whole process of putting a play on its feet — from inception to performance,” said Kelfstrom, who is the kindergarten through 12th-grade theater program chairwoman at Runnels and will direct the production. The spring tour is funded by a grant from the Louisiana Environmental Commission, which called for the play to feature an ecology theme and to be written by high school students. The play tells the story of a bear named Bonnie who longs to be a jazz singer in New Orleans. To get there, she travels

through the five regions of Louisiana, meeting indigenous animals, the release said. “It’s both fun and educational,” Kelfstrom said. Playwriting/directing class

students include Joseph Armoney, Isabel Booty, Jena Bordelon, Micah Danos, Jarrett LaBonne, Will Lurker, McKenzie Mayeaux and Savannah Sanders.
