VIPS lends skills, heart in schools BY RANDEE ILES
Manship School News Service Volunteers are working to improve public education in East Baton Rouge Parish through Volunteers in Public Schools, a community nonprofit with multiple programs aimed at achieving this goal. In two of the programs, EveryBody Reads and EveryOne Counts, volunteers meet with children to read to them and help with math problems. Besides volunteering, VIPS is helping schools by creating partnerships with area businesses and organizations through Partners in Education. LSU’s College of Human Sciences and Education participates in the program. “We have so much human capital and human resources and kind hearts and hands that will hopefully be able to make a difference,” said Renée Boutte Myer, outreach and advocacy coordinator for the college. Myer participated in a recent VIPS Principal for a Day program, where Partners in Education representatives were paired with principals in East Baton Rouge public schools. Myer was matched with Charlotte Britten, principal of Buchanan Elementary, near the LSU campus. The representatives and principals shadowed each other to observe what public schools are like and to create relationships. Through the program, VIPS hopes to dispute misconceptions about public schools. Through previous volunteer work and the College of Human Sciences and Education, Myer said she already is aware of the challenges äSee VIPS, page 3G

On hand for the planting were Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain, State Forester Wade Dubea and SAF President Robert Alverts.

Continued from page 1G facing public education in the parish. Britten and Myer noted that one challenge they faced in the partnership is scheduling conflicts between LSU and the elementary school, but overall the program is reciprocally rewarding. Through the program, LSU students can receive credit for reading or helping with math in the schools. “We’re helping to produce some good citizens,” Britten said, “so we’re starting young to build the character, the values, as well as educational aspects of our students.” Myer believes it is important for the university, and the College of Human Sciences and Education in particular, to partner with the school because it is committed to public education in Louisiana. In 1991, Myer was LSU’s first African-American homecom-
dipping their front bicycle tires in the Atlantic Ocean just as they had dipped their rear tires in the Pacific Ocean to start their trip on the West Coast.

Lay the sliced bacon (side by side) in a row the length of the tenderloin. Lay the cut tenderloin over the sliced bacon so when you close the tenderloin, the bacon will already be under the tenderloin and easier to wrap. Break the cheese into pieces then place into the opened tenderloin. Fill the opened tenderloin with the boudin mixture. Close the tenderloin then wrap each piece of bacon around the closed tenderloin, using toothpicks to hold each piece of bacon. The stuffed tenderloin should be completely wrapped in bacon from one end to the other end with toothpicks sticking out the sides. Grill the stuffed tenderloin until cooked thoroughly. Be sure the boudin mixture in the center of the tenderloin reaches 160oF (approximately 45 minutes over an indirect medium heat fire). Once cooked, remove the tenderloin from the grill, and let sit 10 minutes then remove toothpicks, slice and serve.

Copper Mill,LSU Lab take top honors at Math Olympiad
Advocate staff report Math was the star Nov. 7 at the Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad at Kenilworth Science and Technology School. Hundreds of people from across Louisiana packed the school gym to cheer on fifth-graders who spent their Saturday testing their math chops at the Olympiad. The results added up to victory for students from Copper Mill Elementary in Zachary and the LSU Lab School in Baton Rouge. The two schools combined to take all four of the top spots at the Olympiad, which drew students from 51 schools in 14 towns and cities throughout Louisiana, including Brusly, Destrehan, Gonzales, Jackson, Mandeville, Plaquemine, Port Allen, Prairieville, Thibodaux and Walker. The statewide event, held Nov. 7, was open to students from all public, private, parochial, charter and home schools in Louisiana. Gavin Malden of Copper Mill Elementary in Zachary took home first place in the “old school” math contest; Alex Wu of LSU Lab School came in second; William Iannitelli of Copper Mill was third, and Aadit Narayanan of LSU Lab finished fourth. Those students won prizes, including an iPod Touch, Kindle Fire, Kindle and an iPod Shuffle. Their teachers also were awarded with gift certificates. View the list of the top 25 students here. The students selected 24 student cars and 24 teacher cars in the main campus parking lot for the study. Parking scores were determined by measuring the distance from the parking lines to each tire. The difference between the side wheels (on both sides), the rear wheels and the front wheels was calculated and then added together to determine the parking score. The lower the number, the better the parking score, a news release said.
