Library System hires broker for south branch location BY ANDREA GALLO
agallo@theadvocate.com The East Baton Rouge Library System’s leaders are continuing their yearslong search for a south branch location and have hired a real estate broker to help in the process. The city-parish finalized a contract this week for the library to use Sperry Van Ness/Graham, Langlois & Legendre, LLC as its real estate broker to help with the site search. The library will not pay a fee to the broker, and the property seller would have to pay any commission that Sperry Van Ness earns. Library Board members and staffers have gone through an exhaustive search of potential properties for the south branch over the past few years. They once planned to build the south branch at Rouzan, developer J.T. “Tommy” Spinosa’s mixed use development on Perkins Road. In 2013, the library pulled out of äSee LIBRARY, page 3G

BR soccer league scores high with players 40, older BY AARON E. LOONEY

Niomi Krzystowczyk eagerly cheered on the Bravehearts while looking on at BREC’s Burbank Soccer Complex on a recent Sunday afternoon. “Good job out there,” she yelled as players passed the ball and attempted a shot on goal against the opposing Global40. “Keep going.” The 51-year-old was not cheering for her child playing, but for her husband, Doug. And she did so while waiting on the sideline to enter the game herself
“As you get older, your time to go out and be active may be limited because of work or family responsibilities. This league offers a chance to get outside and be active, keep in shape and socialize with people they may not be around normally.” PATRICK BUENO, who serves as Baton Rouge Soccer’s adult leagues director
on a substitution. Krzystowczyk is one of the 127 members of Baton Rouge Soccer’s Over-40 division, a recreational league which plays 90-minute games on Sunday afternoons. “It’s a lot of fun,” she said of playing in the league. “You get the joy you had
as a kid running full out, because you don’t get that just by exercising at the gym on the treadmill.” The league is open to both men and women age 40 years or older. However, a player may be 39 years old if they turn 40 during the season. “As you get older, your time to go
out and be active may be limited because of work or family responsibilities,” said Patrick Bueno, who serves as Baton Rouge Soccer’s adult leagues director. “This league offers a chance to get outside and be active, keep in shape and socialize with people they may not be around normally.” Bueno said the Over-40 league offers a chance for players of all skill levels to play not only with friends or significant others, but even their parents. “It’s really a social league,” he said
More tenants in line for Long Farm Village BY TIMOTHY BOONE
tboone@theadvocate.com Now that the extension of Antioch Road is complete, commercial activity in the Long Farm Village traditional neighborhood development is picking up steam. Rouses started construction of a 55,000-square-foot supermarket that will be one of the anchors of Long Farm, a mixeduse development bordered by Airline and Jefferson highways and Barringer-Foreman Road. The store is scheduled to be open by the summer. A Zaxby’s chicken tenders restaurant has been permitted for a spot at the corner of Airline and Antioch. On Dec. 14, the City-Parish Planning Commission will vote on granting fi-
nal approval to just over 18,000 square feet of additional retail space in Long Farm. Russell Mosely, who is developing Long Farm on a 237-acre tract of farmland assembled by his grandfather, the late U.S. Sen. Russell Long, said he has lease contracts and agreements with a number of tenants, which include restaurants and retailers. Mosely would not disclose the tenants but said he would release names in December or early 2016. “We’ve got to get a couple of things finished up and get a couple more contracts on paper,” he said. Plans are for Long Farm to eventually have about 400 single-family residences, up äSee LONG FARM, page 3G

BR Magnet celebrates Blue Ribbon designation Advocate staff report Baton Rouge Magnet High School students and staff celebrated the school’s Blue Ribbon school of excellence designation Nov. 19 with music, food and activities. The school was one of nine Louisiana schools receiving the designation in September. It’s the third time the school earned the honor. The Blue Ribbon award is given by the U.S. Department
of Education, which began bestowing the honor in 1982. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan at 10 a.m. announced the 335 schools named this year — 285 public and 50 private schools nationwide. Schools can earn Blue Ribbon awards in two ways: They are among the top performing schools in their respective states, or they have shown substantial progress in closing the achievement gap between all students and his-
torically low-performing subsets of students such as racial minorities and those living in poverty. Last week’s celebration included performances by ballet and band students The U.S. Department of Education honored the 335 schools at a recognition ceremony Nov. 9-10 in Washington, D.C. In its 33-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this award on some 8,000 schools.

Continued from page 1G that agreement and cited frustrations about a lack of process on the site. The board also hired a search firm in 2014 to help scout possible south branch locations, but none of those locations were deemed to be what the library
was looking for. About a year ago, library officials said they were hoping to build the south branch on a plot of land across from Lee High School. But nearby residents said they were not interested in having a library there, citing worries it would add traffic to the already congested Lee Drive. Library officials are now back at the drawing board.
Some Library Board members have questioned whether it’s worth continuing to pursue plans for a south branch when search efforts so far have been fruitless. But other Library Board members said they will not go back on their commitment to the south side of the parish, especially because the money for the south branch has been
saved and set aside. The Southside Civic Association also encouraged them to keep looking and not to give up. The library had envisioned a 15,000-square-foot library for the south branch, but Library Director Spencer Watts acknowledged they may need to become more flexible with their ideas or consider a different kind of library.

Tapestry Long Farm will contain a mix of one-, twoand three-bedroom units. The complex will feature amenities such as a cyber cafe; an outdoor pavilion complete with a bar; washers and dryers in each unit; high-end finishes; and most likely a game room. Plans are for the complex to be completed by late 2016.

For the fourth consecutive year, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System received the Library Journal’s America’s Star Libraries Award. This year, EBRPL is the only library in the state honored with the Journal’s 5 Stars rating. “We are delighted to be named one of America’s Star Libraries for 2015 and are eager to share this honor and all it recognizes in services, programs and collections with our real stars — our library patrons,” said Kizzy Payton, president of the EBRPL Board of Control. Only 85 library systems, or 1.1 percent across the nation, earned 5 Stars this year out of a review of 7,663 public libraries being scored for the main award, a news release said. “It’s great to hear from our
customers and our peers in libraries across the nation that we are getting it right in promoting lifelong learning while engaging and inspiring the public,” Kizzy said. The Library Journal’s Index of Public Library Service compares U.S. public libraries with their budgeting peers based on four per capita output measures: circulation, library visits, program attendance and public Internet computer use, a news release said. “This is a tribute to the hard work and innovative spirit of our staff, the strategic planning and leadership of the Library Board of Control, the continuing collaboration and assistance of the Mayor’s Office and the Metro Council and the enthusiastic support of our community,” EBRPL Director Spencer Watts said.

It’s really laid back.” The league is open to players of all skill levels, Bueno said. “You don’t have to have played soccer before to join this league,” he said. “Soccer is an easy sport to learn and to play. All you need is some space, a ball and people who want to enjoy their time together. The fact that the different levels of play can combine and still enjoy it is great.” Krzystowczyk is an example of this, joining the league after watching her children and husband play the sport. “It’s such a great cross-section of people,” she said. “I didn’t start playing until my 40s. Even after you’ve hit 40 and even if you’ve never played, you can come out here and have a lot of fun. Being coed is very nice, because I get to play with my husband.” The coed league has 11 teams, with rosters ranging from 8 to 15 members. Players wear numbered jerseys, along with shin guards. Slide tackling is not allowed, and all players are limited to scoring twice per game. Teams are granted unlimited substitutions in a game, and all free kicks are indirect. While Baton Rouge Soccer’s focus has been on youth leagues, Bueno said, its adult membership has grown to be the largest in the state. “Just in our adult leagues, we have more than 1,000 members, including the 127 players in the Over-40 league,” he said. Bueno said that the league “was on the back burner” for years before being retooled in 2013. “There wasn’t a lot of interest in it,” he
which typically is held up to a month before the start of the season, is $43. After that time, regular registration is $68. The cost includes insurance and field availability. While league registration used to be during a specific time period, Bueno said he is opening registration yearround starting in the spring of 2016. “In this league, we have players who will play for a few months and may get hurt,” he said. “They take a little longer to recover, so that team is now down a player and has to grab someone else to fill that position. Opening the registration period helps the teams out in that regard.” Baton Rouge Soccer currently has approximately 7,000 registered players throughout all of the leagues, Bueno said. Schulze said he feels the Over-40 league is evidence of the growth of soccer in the Baton Rouge area in the past 20 years. “Soccer is doing very well here,” he said. “Right now, I believe, we have more soccer players than any other sport. I love seeing it grow here like it has, and it’s only getting bigger.” The sport’s popularity around the world also helps to create a very diverse community, Bueno added. “When people from other countries who maybe played soccer before move here, we give them the chance to stay involved with the sport they grew up playing back home,” Bueno said. “It’s really visible in the Over-40 league. Playing with people from different cultures give you a chance to learn about them. We’ve got plenty of different cultures coming together to play a game they all love. It’s just awesome.” For information or to register for the Over-40 league, visit www.brsoccer.org or contact Bueno at (225) 924-2157 or pbueno@brsoccer.org.
