> WELCOME TO THE 3RD WINDSOR LocAle BEER FESTIVAL! Thank you for supporting our festival at Windsor Farm Shop and thank you to the Crown Estate for allowing us to use this wonderful venue once again.
There is plenty to suit everyone, with light hoppy beers through to dark stouts. We have ordered beers from within a 30 mile radius of the festival and with so many new breweries to choose from, we hope there will be something that you haven’t tried before to tickle your taste buds. We also have a great range of ciders, again keeping to a local theme and including cider made just down the road in Slough. This festival is run by CAMRA volunteers who give up their time to put this all together and I would like to thank them all for helping us out. I do ensure they are fed and watered (with beer, of course), so it’s not all bad! If you are not sure what you like, then ask a member of bar staff, who will be happy to point you in the right direction. This year, our charity of the festival is Berkshire County Blind Society. Please give generously to help them raise funds for this very worthy and local cause. It is a sad fact that 16 pubs are closing every week, which is not helped by the government’s stance on beer duty. This is set to rise every year by 2% above inflation, which will mean your pint will cost you 5-10p more each time. Britain has the second highest rate of beer tax in the EU and I would urge every one of you to sign our online petition at www.camra.org.uk/saveourpint to help trigger a debate and put pressure on the government to think again. There are many benefits to being a CAMRA member and the membership fee is tremendous value. £20 worth of money off real ale vouchers for J D Wetherspoon, a monthly newspaper and quarterly magazine, discounts on CAMRA books and free or discounted entry into beer festivals along with 10-20% off at various travel, outdoor and holiday companies, all for the great price of £23 per year. There are joint membership rates and discounts for concessions and for paying by direct debit. If you would like to join CAMRA, use the form in the brochure. Leave it with us today and we will send it to Head Office for you, saving the postage. Enjoy the festival and drink safely.
Cheers!

> THE OLYMPICS AT DORNEY LAKE, WINDSOR Plenty of great pubs to make your day, as Allan Willoughby explains
T
he wait is nearly over for what promises to be a fantastic festival of sport, as well as a landmark cultural event. Team GB’s biggest haul of Gold medals could take place in our branch area! The Eton College Rowing Centre, Dorney Lake, hosts the Rowing, Canoeing & Kayaking and Paralympic Rowing events as part of the London Olympics. Dorney Lake is a modern world-class rowing and flat-water centre set in a spectacular 450 acre parkland near Windsor. Constructed and privately owned by Eton College, it is managed by Dorney Lake Trust, the registered charity which operates the Lake Site. The lake is 2,200 metres long and has an eight-lane course and was fully completed in 2006. For the Olympics, the facilities have been upgraded to include new access roads and the construction of two bridges on the island between the main lake and the return lake. Up to 30,000 spectators per day will be able to enjoy the Rowing, Kayak and Paralympic events and there will be 3,500 staff and volunteers assisting the venue. Dorney Lake will continue to provide a world-class training and home of Eton’s rowing. Athletes will be housed at the Royal Holloway College, which is 16Km from the competition venue. Athletes will also be provided with a bed at the main Olympic Village in Stratford.
Rowing There are two types of Rowing at the Olympic Games: Sweep Rowing and Sculling. Sweep Rowing use a single oar. They compete in crews of two, four or eight – the eight is steered by a ‘cox’, who also gives the crew instructions. Scullers have an oar in each hand, and so can compete alone in a single, as well as in doubles and quadruple sculls. Competition dates are from Saturday 28th July to Saturday 4th August, there are 14 Gold medals in total and some 550 Athletes are participating.
Canoeing & Kayaking Within Canoe racing there are two disciplines, Canoe Sprint and Canoe Slalom. Canoe is a generic term and includes Kayaks and Canoes. The Kayak ‘paddler’ is in a sitting position with a double-ended paddle and the Canoe ‘paddler’ kneels in the boat using a single-bladed paddle. Competition dates for Canoeing & Kayaking are from Monday 6th August to Saturday 11th August, there will be 16 Gold medals (12 Flatwater and 4 Slalom) and some 330 Athletes are participating (248 Flatwater, 82 Slalom)
Paralympic Rowing In 1975 Adaptive Rowing programmes began in a number of countries, including Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Sates. There are currently four classes which involve a coxed four, a double scull, and two sculling events. All races are held over a 1,000 metre course. Paralympic Rowing is the youngest sport in the Paralympic Games, making its debut at Beijing 2008. Adaptive rowing boats are equipped with special seats, which vary according to the disability of the athlete. Competition dates are from Friday 31st August to Sunday 2nd September, there will be 4 Gold medals and a total of 108 Athletes are participating Team GB successes have been pioneered by the likes of Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the tradition will continue. Based a stone’s throw from Windsor, spectators will have an enviable selection of superb pubs endorsed by the Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead branch of CAMRA, so why not give them a go if you are visiting the games........or even if you are not! In the meantime you can visit www.london2012. com to get the latest news, and get ready for that opening ceremony on Friday 27th July, hopefully you would have recovered from our Beer Festival by then!

> FIGHT BACK TO SAVEYOUR PINT SIGN THE BEER TAX E-PETITION I
t’s time to save your pint and fight back against this year’s budget which saw the Government continue its damaging policy of the beer duty escalator. Every year beer tax increases by 2% above inflation meaning your pint in the pub costs you 5-10p more. This mounting pressure is contributing to the closure of 16 pubs every single week. CAMRA is calling all beer drinkers and pub goers to sign an online e-petition today by visiting www.camra.org.uk/saveyourpint. Reporting in July’s edition of CAMRA’s What’s Brewing, the petition was set to reach the 60,000 mark - meaning it’s on target to achieve 100,000 signatures and force a debate in parliament on duty rises in time to potentially effect the budget in 2013 To stand a chance of doing this we need your help in reaching as many people as possible. So please sign the petition and then spread the word.
CAMRA also has free material to take down your local and join the campaign. Email claire.cain@camra.org.uk to order free beer mats and posters.* With around £1 on every pint going to the Treasury in beer duty and VAT, it’s time to save your pint and call time on the beer duty escalator! *One pubs pack contains 5 x A4 posters and 100 beer mats, please let Claire know how many pubs packs you would like.
