W

elcome (or is it welcome back?) to the Winter Gardens in Morecambe for the third CAMRA beer festival. As our regulars can see, the building is slowly improving and heading back to its former glory. As for Lunesdale CAMRAs efforts, well there are at least fifty real ales on, at least twelve ciders, and wines for those who have been dragged here by their partners. Hopefully something for every one. Music is provided, as usual, by locals bands. Wicked Soul provide Friday’s entertainment with their varied line up of classic pop/rock from the closing decades of last century. Saturday is the High Society Jazz Band’s turn to play on the same stage as the Beatles (and of course many other famous acts). There are any number of individuals and companies without whose help this event would not be happening. Our local brewers, local pubs and those in the surrounding area, our sponsors, the friends of the Winter Gardens, the people of Morecambe and Lancaster and how long have you got?

Branch Contacts

There are a number of people, mostly here tonight, who will claim to have done all manner of things – choosing and ordering the beer – sorting out the scaffold and bar equipment – organising logistics – recruiting and training staff – publicising the event – raising the money and taking care of it. Well take no notice of them, it was I who did it all and all of my own and don’t listen to anyone else. Looks like I’ll have to go now, the little white van’s arrived together with my straight jacket. Have a great night and we’ll see you next year. Cheers, George Palmer, Festival coordinator

THE BOROUGH BREWERY A message from...

F

irst off all is a big thank you to all the volunteers who get together in their own time to put on this cracking shindig for us all. The Morecambe Beer Festival is in its third year now but this is the first time that the Borough Brewery will have its own beer available and we couldn’t be more excited to be here. The Borough Brewery started a little over a year ago at The Borough on Dalton Square in Lancaster. In that time the Brewery has focused on establishing its core range of a Pale, Bitter and a Seasonal Dark. With the capacity to brew around 1500 pints a week we’ve been working hard to get them out there for you to enjoy and we’re really pleased with how they’ve gone down with the real ale drinkers of Lancaster. All our beers are available at The Borough but they’re also available across Lancaster so you might have also tried us at The Gregson, The Snug, The White Cross and The Merchants. We’ve also been doing swaps with other Breweries so you might be lucky to stumble across us further afield than Lancaster now too. So here we are, with our core range well established it’s time for a new adventure and we will be mixing things up a bit with some specials, more seasonal offerings and some one off get them while you can brews. Even better, the next step for us starts here as the lovely folk at the Morecambe

4

Morecambe Beer Fest 2014.indd 4

Beer Festival have commissioned us to brew a beer specially for the event and we’ve come up with FestivAle. It’s a delicious caramel malt focused summery session ale, nicely hopped with First Gold and Cascade. Our flagship Pale will also be available at the festival. It’s 3.7% with Chinook and Cascade hops perfectly complementing the prestigious Golden Promise malt. So enjoy the beer, there is a lot of different and exciting brews to try over the next few days and we look forward to seeing you for a chat at the bar. Julian Holt

JULIAN HOLT Sadly missed

E

arlier this year a great man died. He was a good friend to many, a husband, a father and grandfather. He was also a real ale drinker. He supported CAMRA and its goals from the start. He was a stalwart of the Lunesdale Branch and is sadly missed by ever so many. Beer is the reason I met Julian Holt. His personality, sense of humour and integrity is why we became friends. But who was he? A beer drinker and renowned home brewer? A lifelong member of the communist party? A teacher? A prize

winning creative writer? All these and so much more. He was unique, enigmatic, a true one off. A true friend to so many. He died of Marphan’s Syndrome, a hereditary genetic condition which has claimed other members of his family. It is because of this that we will be accepting donations for Marphan Society in exchange for a sample of special beers brewed and donated by Cross Bay. Enjoy your beers tonight, and raise a glass to a great man, Julian Holt.

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP CAMRA Contact secretary@lunesdalecamra.org.uk

I

f you can never make our BRANCH Meetings, there are still plenty of things you can do for CAMRA. Here are two: SCORE BEERS The main problem here is remembering to do it Log in to CAMRA’s online pub guide, WhatPub (www.whatpub.com), using your membership number and the same password that you use to enter the CAMRA national website. Search for the pub and enter a score for each beer that you drank. If you can’t get online, use the form below to score (or any piece of paper with the same information) and send it to the address above. One score per pub per member per month is adequate. Please submit scores for every kind of premises, not just ‘good’ pubs.

DELIVER THIS MAGAZINE This particularly applies to members living in remoter rural areas. Just go to the White Cross in Lancaster and ask for some Lunesdale Drinkers. Then leave them in a pub, club, shop or anywhere the public can pick them up. No special authority or permission from us is required to do this, but if you want to do it regularly, contact secretary@lunesdalecamra.org.uk (or 22 Cumberland View, LA1 4AB) and you will be told when the new issues come out. About two dozen copies is a reasonable number for the average pub. If you don’t get to the White Cross often (or at all), we will try to arrange a convenient pick-up point for you.
