27th Wigan CAMRA Beer Festival

WELCOME TO THE 27th WIGAN BEER FESTIVAL ORGANISED BY YOUR LOCAL WIGAN BRANCH OF CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale)

R

eal Ale (also known as cask beer) is brewed from traditional ingredients mainly malted barley, hops and water (though brewers call this liquor!) After yeast has fermented the sugars into alcohol the beer is then put directly into casks without any filtration or pasteurisation. This means the living yeast remains in the cask and the beer can benefit from a secondary fermentation therein. This allows complex flavours to develop and improve the beer. We have adopted a pirate theme (maybe PIErate?). Many of us will be in fancy dress on Saturday and the bars are suitably bedecked. Why not join in the fun and come as Johnny Depp or Captain Kidd – there will be a prize for the best fancy dress on Saturday. In addition to the real ale bars we have a great range of traditional cider and foreign beer each on opposite sides of the hall. For more information on these read on in the programme. Bus News We have the usual double decker doing shuttle runs between the festival and the Anvil Pub in Wigan Centre. Special thanks to the Anvil for sponsoring this. This service is FREE but we do ask for a small donation (ideally £1) to cover some of the cost. This year on Friday and Saturday we have another FREE service running from the festival to The Anvil then up to The Brocket on Mesnes Road, on to the Boars Head & Globe in Standish, to The Silver Tally in Shevington Moor and The Crooke Hall off Standish Lower Ground and finally back at the festival. This is a circular trip and you can get on and off as you wish. Details for both services can be found from the entry desk and thanks to Prospect Brewery for sponsoring this new service. We would also like to thank all our barrel sponsors and the major sponsors The Anvil, The Jolly

MEMBERSHIP EY-UP BEER LOVERS!

W

e at the Wigan CAMRA branch are a diverse bunch. We have one thing in common. We love beers. You can join CAMRA for only £23 a year (less for concessionary groups) and you get £20 of Wetherspoons Vouchers, a quarterly magazine and a monthly newspaper and there are discount schemes for several useful retailers. You’ll find membership posters dotted around the venue and application form in the back of this programme. If in doubt talk to us, we don’t bite. I may do the odd burp though. Beer isn’t just for beards – it’s for all people. Get involved, and help us have fun. We have a Branch Newsletter and we will be mailing out twice a month. If you are a Wigan Member and you haven’t had an email this month – or you think you’ve missed it please email membership@ wigancamra.org.uk and I’ll check our records, and send it back out to you. Excellent sites such as www.whatpub.com are entirely built, run and maintained by beer loving volunteers – but you don’t have to campaign hard. Drinking Real-Ale and visiting pubs helps keep more establishments open and keeps our healthy, community based, drinking culture alive. Next time you see us out talk to us about beer. You may even see a few volunteers happy enough to have a sign saying “Hello my name is” who love to talk to everyone about beer and pubs. We seek great beer, seek great conversations, and meet new people? Does that sound good to you? See you soon & cheers to the beer Shaun

REAL ALE SECTION AVAST YE BREW DRINKING LAND LUBBERS!

T

his year we’re proud to showcase award winning beers, known favourites & radical boundary pushers. We’ve sourced beers from around the UK & importantly from our hard-working LocAle breweries – we have 3 breweries in the Wigan CAMRA branch boundaries alone. With so many more only just outside we couldn’t include them all in the same year. We’ve got a lot of styles, and flavours – but we’ll make you a deal. There’s no ‘walking of the plank’ punishment regimes if you don’t like a certain beer. We’d just ask you to try a few. Please try not to drink

DARK BEERS

with your eyes. Drink with your taste buds & see what hidden treasures you can find! Remember we all taste things differently, but we all agree we like beer. The fun starts with the debate & your journey into the unknown seas of beer research! Just don’t get too groggy me hearties or you might lose your sea-legs! Remember beers are an adventure. It does not matter when you start, just as long as you explore it! Where tasting notes denote LA = LocAle beer

This list is provisional and subject to last minute changes and alterations depending on availability.

OUTSTANDING

LA Lager 4.5% Only Maris Otter low colour malt gives this beer a very pale appearance that looks like a lager but is definitely an ale. Lightly bittered with a heavy concentration of flavour towards citrus and floral nose and mouth feel.

Blonde

Ginger Tosser

Ginger 3.8% Designed for red-headed pancake tossers (of course! What did you think the name was referencing...for shame!). Made with the finest Cornish Honey. This golden ale is mild sweet and malty. Surprisingly hoppy with a mild ginger burn. Finishes a little dry and crisp.

Refunds WIGAN CAMRA offer a full refund for any unused tokens (though we welcome donations to our nominated charity Wigan & Leigh Hospice) and for your Festival glass, should you not wish to keep it. However we ask that at the end of the night any token refunds need to be requested by 11:10pm (bars close at 11pm) and that glasses are returned by 11:20pm as most of our volunteers have by then been working around a 12 hour day and need to clean up and get home for a few hours sleep before coming in the next morning (festival take down and clear up on Sunday starts at 9am!). We request that anyone who has unused tokens or unwanted glasses after this time kindly donate their value to the Hospice. Also due to our hire agreement with the venue we will be asking all visitors to leave the premises by 11:25pm.

CIDER & PERRY WELCOME TO THE CIDER & PERRY BAR SECTION

W

ith a bigger stillage and longer bar, the Cider bar team have been working hard this winter to save (smuggle) cider out of the flooded south-west of England ! Among our large selection of products you will find easy going blended ciders & perrys, challenging scrumpy’s, unique single varieties, and even some mead. Now a little word of warning .... all of these ciders & perrys are extremely strong. One half pint of our cider contains the same units of alcohol as one pint of strongbow or similar fizzy ciders. Please don’t be surprised or offended if the staff suggest a half

CIDER

rather than a pint, it will allow you to take your time and sample some of the other products on offer. And while we are on the subject of sampling, we want you to find the cider that matches your palate so please ask the staff for a couple of samples if you aren’t sure what to have; but please don’t abuse this. Finally on behalf of the cider bar team we hope you have a safe and enjoyable festival, please remember to drink responsibly. If you do have any problems, suggestions or complaints please ask for Sam at the bar.
