W

elcome back to the Tiny Pint, sorry we have been away. The 5th Rutland CAMRA Beer festival and the 2nd Oakham Ale Trail is almost on us. Yes, again Oakham will be providing visitors from far and wide over 100 beers, 40 or so at our venue the well-loved County Museum. We are also being joined by the Oakham Arts Festival so mirth and jolliment is guaranteed. June 25-28th is when everything will happen, our beer list will be on our website www.Rutlandcamra.org.uk and we will also endeavour to feature the complete Ale Trail list. Our beers have been assembled by Rutland CAMRA member Russ Hibbitt, who along with helping us out also organises the Empingham Cricket Club’s excellent beer festivals and the amazing Burghley Park Cricket week’s beer festival just over our border in Stamford. The branch membership is growing, slowly, but as Dave Casewell tells us in his article we need some fresh faces and enthusiasm to keep us going. Contact Dave on membership@rutlandcamra.org.uk. One advantage of being a member of Rutland CAMRA is that you get the monthly newsletter compiled by Paul Lucas - this is worth membership alone. Dave Laughton our Pubs Officer - sorry Pub Campaigns Coordinator, not his choice of title - has kept our pubs up to date in www.WhatPub.com and also organises our Pub of the Season and Pub of The Year contests. This year The Green Dragon in Ryhall are worthy winners of Rutland’s Pub of The Year. Since our last issue Rutland CAMRA has campaigned hard to get our own entry into the Good Beer Guide. The 2014 national CAMRA Member’s weekend and AGM passed Motion 16 which said “This Conference, respecting the full branch status of Rutland CAMRA, demands that the Good Beer Guide (GBG) lists Leicestershire and Rutland as separate counties in the GBG as soon as possible and no later than the 2016 edition of the GBG”.We have received assurances from CAMRA’s Chairman, Colin Valentine, that this will indeed happen and we look forward to seeing this in September. That’s more than enough from me. I look forward to meeting you at our Beer Festival, thanks to all those who will put a huge amount of time into making it a success. Many thanks to Paul & Stephanie for proof reading, any errors are ours - not theirs. Tiny Pint is out again in the Autumn. Jon Whowell - Chairman Rutland CAMRA Branch

RUTLAND PUB OF THE YEAR COMPETITION GREEN DRAGON, RYHALL

T

he presentation of the Pub of the Year award to the Green Dragon in Ryhall was the culmination of a busy and interesting year. The highest accolade that any branch can accord to any pub is that of POTY and it is right that the award should be seen to be hard earned. In Rutland, four qualifying pubs are selected by virtue of winning the Pub of the Season (POTS) award and the fifth is the highest scoring, non-award winning pub over the entire year. The selection of POTS is achieved two ways. The beer scores are recorded over the quarter, these are then examined by me to check they satisfy our criteria for nomination; these are: open for more than six months and they must have three beer scores of 3 or greater. The top three averaging pubs are automatically nominated and a simple show of hands at a branch meeting decides the winner. Thus we combine beer quality with a degree of consistency and by also having the final vote we ensure that unusual or tactical voting can be eliminated. The spring award of 2014 went to the Grainstore Brewery Tap in Oakham, a regular and deserving winner. The summer award went to the White Lion, Whissendine; it was with great pleasure that I presented Yolanda and Chris with their first CAMRA award. The autumn award went to the Green Dragon, Ryhall; I was delighted to present the award to Deborah and Shaun - their first venture into the pub trade - trading now for just two years. The winter award was yet another first, this time for the Three Crowns, Oakham but it was tinged with a little sadness. The award was a first for the pub under

Dave Laughton, Pubs Officer, seated left presents the 2015 Pub of The Year (POTY) to Shaun and Debbie Rolfe.

Jeff Fraine’s management; the pub had only been opened 12 months following its sale and refurbishment. Unfortunately, Jeff was leaving in the New Year and we wished him well. Our fifth contender was the Old White Hart, Lyddington and POTY judging could start. The criteria for judging is, as expected, more rigorous and follow the CAMRA guidelines for the regional and national competition. While still including beer quality we also have, atmosphere/style/décor, service/welcome and community focus, among others. The rest, as they say, is history. One of the good things about being Pubs Officer is that it forces you to go out and view other pubs within the branch rather than just sitting in your local, but you too can take part in deciding Rutland’s award winners. If you are not a member join, attend branch meetings and drink real ale with us. RUTLAND CAMRA NEEDS YOU! JOIN US TODAY

M

any readers of this magazine will already be members, but I guess the majority will not be. If you are NOT currently a member, can I ask you to pause for a second and think “why not?” • •

You are probably a real ale drinker You probably have a vague notion that if it were not for the 40 years of campaigning by CAMRA there would not be any real ale today You will have read in the national press that over 30 pubs per week are closing due to the actions of pubco’s and penalising taxation such as VAT and Business rates And more importantly, you are most likely to be a sociable person who enjoys the odd pint of beer or cider in a pleasant pub, with good company. A slab of industrially produced coloured water is not your idea of a decent pint.

Now cease reflecting, turn to the page towards the back of this magazine, pick up a pen and complete the CAMRA membership form and send it off immediately,

A VISIT TO THE CAMRA’S MEMBERS’ AGM WEEKEND CAMRA AGM IN NOTTINGHAM

O

ff we sped, the two Rutland CAMRA attendees, on the early train to Nottingham aiming to be there in good time for the 9.30 kick off. A bacon butty and a cup of coffee, and we were ready for the fray. The meeting took place at the Albert Hall which, ironically, has its roots in the Methodist movement! Over 1000 members slowly filled the hall to capacity, with much greeting of old friends, much relieved that they were all still alive! A hush came over the hall as the executive emerged onto the stage led by the CAMRA chair Colin Valentine. Conference then approved CAMRA policy documents which basically set down the internal workings of the movement, and the agreed stances taken on the various campaigns it mounts. Then on to the fun bit where conference debates motions put forward by various members and branches. There was a lively debate as to whether it was appropriate for CAMRA to denigrate those who choose to drink keg beers and fizzy lagers and ciders. After much heated debate it was agreed that all have the right to choose what they wish to drink, and CAMRA should NOT try to belittle their choice, rather try to influence them to try the real thing! We had a guest speaker Professor Charlie Bamforth who, whilst originating from Lancashire, now works as a professor of Brewing in California. He was a natural wit, making the case that wine has stolen the intellectual high ground from beer, and that it was time to reverse the trend. His argument went along the lines that beer was, in fact a complex drink with a huge spectrum of sophisticated features, whilst wine is a simple drink made

The great and good of CAMRA gather in Nottingham to talk beer, cider & perries

complex by clever marketing and intellectual snobbery. “To make wine, all you do is tread on grapes and wait! What do you do whilst you wait? You drink beer!” His well delivered homily to beer was, naturally well received by the conference. Conference was also addressed by CAMRA’s new CEO, Tim Page, who outlined how he interpreted his role in the organisation, and outlined “passions” which would influence his leadership • Beer • Volunteer • Pubs • Campaigning Following his excellent outline, members retired to the volunteer bar to sample ales from the Nottingham area. A few glasses accessed my lips, and my favourite was “Rise and Shine”, a coffee milk stout from the Black Iris brewery in New Basford. Other commitments meant that I had to head back to the station to return home, but not before an excellent pint of “Sherwood Reserve” stout from the Castle Rock brewery drunk with some rapidity at the Canal House on Canal Street. Attended by Jon Whowell, Branch Chair and Dave Casewell, Branch Membership Secretary Dave Casewell (scribe) Nottingham Castle (left), Robin Hood statue (centre) and the Members bar sign (right)

THE BREWERIES OF RUTLAND CALLING ALL AMATEUR HISTORIANS (WHO ARE INTERESTED IN BEER)

I

know it’s simple. Firstly there is Grainstore then Barrowden and now Bakers Dozen. Well – No! What about Oakham Ales now of Peterborough, I hear you cry. Well – still No. OK, I hear you now! You mean Ruddles in Langham! Well – getting closer. I’ll give you a clue, how about Green & Hacker in Whissendine producers of Cottesmore Hunt Ale! Who? Would the Crown Brewery in Ryhall help or would knowing that Sismore & Gann operated as maltsters in 1826, whilst the Sismore family ran the Green Dragon inspire further thought. Perhaps you have heard of Hanseatic Trading of Hambleton, I suspect not but I bet you have heard of McMullens. Do I have your attention now?

The Whissendine Brewery of Green and Hacker

There have been numerous breweries in the county over the years and while some information is available, it is by no means complete. I can supply some information from the Brewery History Society that will point us in the right direction. It is by no means complete but it would be interesting to paint a picture of beer retailing, malting and brewing within the county but it needs someone who is prepared to chase down the clues to help produce a snapshot of the past. Could that someone be you? If you are interested please contact me, details below. Dave Laughton Pubs Officer (Pubs Campaigns Coordinator) pubs@rutlandcamra.org.uk, 07887 797 557

CAMRA - THE CAMPAIGN FOR REAL ALE CAMPAIGNING FOR PUB GOERS & BEER DRINKERS

C

AMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is a powerful champion for pub-goers and beer drinkers. Formed in 1971 it now has more than 171,000 members. CAMRA is A Campaign of Two Halves. Firstly, the serious campaigning half which fights for the rights of pub goers and beer drinkers and secondly, the fun side that encourages our members to enjoy real ale, pubs and the membership benefits they receive when they join the organisation. CAMRA campaigns tirelessly to support and promote pubs, real ale and consumer rights. Current campaigns include: • The Beer Tie - The unfair operation of the “beer tie” by the large pub companies means higher prices for pub goers, under investment in pubs and pub closures. To deliver a fair deal to consumers CAMRA is demanding that large pub companies deal fairly with tied pub licensees and provide guest real ale rights and free of tie options. As a result of CAMRA’s ongoing work, MP’s have unanimously supported an independent review to ensure the large pub companies change.

• Campaigning against beer tax hikes - One of CAMRA’s key campaigns is to stop beer tax killing beer and pubs. The main aim is to ensure a long term freeze in beer duty. After a year-long campaign CAMRA achieved a huge campaign win at Budget 2013 as the Chancellor axed the beer duty escalator and announced a 1p cut in beer duty, the first time beer duty has been cut since 1959. • Ensuring political support for pubs - CAMRA has secured support from over 270 MPs for our call on Government to introduce pro pub policies. • Protecting the future of pubs - CAMRA campaigns for improved planning protection for pubs to help prevent the unnecessary loss of viable pubs. CAMRA is calling on Government to grant Local Authorities new powers to protect pubs and other local services. • It is important that CAMRA members enjoy real ale, pubs and great membership benefits - CAMRA membership is fun and offers a superb social side that is open to over 171,000 members to enjoy. Meeting people with the same hobby is an important part of being a CAMRA member. • Real Ale - Britain now boasts more than 1000 breweries that brew real ale. This is four times the number than when the Campaign for Real ale was founded in 1971. Our hard campaigning for over 40 years means pubgoers now have the choice of over 5,500 different real ales on today’s market • Real Cider and Perry - CAMRA also supports real Cider and Perry. For more information please visit www. camra.org.uk/cider • Well-run community Pubs - 31 pubs close every week in Britain. CAMRA is working tirelessly to stem this worrying trend through a number of campaigns which include: Organising Local Pubs Week across Britain, promoting prestigious pub awards and producing the best selling Good Beer Guide which features the top 4,500 real ale pubs according to the CAMRA membership.
