Many household cleaners are hard on the environment. And in our region anything that goes down a drain inside our homes can end up in the ocean or in our ground water. Whether you are connected to sewer or on septic, what you put down the drain makes a difference. Fortunately, there are environmentally safe and affordable alternatives to most household cleaners. Lemon juice, baking soda and vinegar are just some of the natural products used in recipes you’ll find in this first edition of The Clean Green Cookbook.

Household Disinfectant /2 CUP BORAX 4 LITRES HOT WATER 1
Mix together. Borax can also be used as an alternative to bleach.

Ammonia-Free Spray Cleaner /4 TSP. DISH SOAP WHITE VINEGAR

Mix together in a spray bottle.

Oven Cleaner BAKING SODA SALT
Mix together in equal parts. Add enough water to produce a paste. Apply to surface and scrub with a scouring pad.

Lemon-Based Cleaner 4 TBSP. BAKING SODA 1 LITRE WARM WATER LEMON
Combine baking soda and warm water. Add lemon juice as needed to cut grease. For use on counter tops, walls, floors and upholstery. NOTE: As with other cleaning products, always test a small, inconspicuous area first.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner BORAX LEMON JUICE BAKING SODA
Make a paste of Borax and lemon juice. Let stand then scrub. Alternatively, sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda and scrub with brush. Add a few drops of lemon juice for freshness. NOTE: As with other cleaning products, always test a small, inconspicuous area first.

PREVENTION TIP! Do not pour any fats, oils or grease down your drains. Instead, cool then pour them into a sealable container. Store in the fridge or freezer until full, then put in your household garbage. NOTE: Not recommended for ceramic toilets. For occasional use only, as continued use may only push a clog further down the pipe.
Drain Cleaner /2 CUP BAKING SODA /2 CUP WHITE VINEGAR 2 LITRES BOILING WATER 1 1
Pour baking soda down the drain followed by vinegar. Cover drain and leave for 15 minutes. Flush with two litres of boiling water.

Scouring Powders BAKING SODA VINEGAR SALT
Use baking soda as an alternative to conventional scouring powders. Alternatively, combine vinegar and salt for an effective surface cleaner. NOTE: As with other cleaning products, always test a small, inconspicuous area first.

Powdered Laundry Soap 1 CUP SOAP GRANULES 1 /2 CUP BORAX
/2 CUP WASHING SODA 10 DROPS ESSENTIAL OIL (OPTIONAL) 1
Combine dry ingredients. Stir in essential oil. Label your finished products and store them safely away from children and pets. T I P : To soften fabrics, pour 1 cup white vinegar into rinse cycle. NOTE: As with other cleaning products, always test a small, inconspicuous area first.

Liquid Laundry Soap 7 LITRES HOT WATER 1 CUP SOAP GRANULES 1 /2 CUP BORAX
/2 CUP WASHING SODA 20 DROPS ESSENTIAL OIL 1
Add 1 litre water and soap granules to pot. Heat until dissolved. Pour into pail with remaining water, Borax and washing soda. Stir until dissolved. Add essential oil. Soap will gel as cools. NOTE: As with other cleaning products, always test a small, inconspicuous area first.
