A Note from the SCHS National Honor Society Board
W
e would like to welcome all the new members of the San Clemente High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. Founded in 1921, National Honor Society was intended “to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.” Our chapter continues to hold these standards in high regard. As new members, you have demonstrated through scholastic achievements, as well as your commitment to school and community service, that you have become a role model for your peers and a leader among high school students.

Peter Bennett Class of 2013 Peter is a junior this year. He has loved playing on the high school Water Polo Team for the past three years and this year received the JV Coaches’ Award. He is president of the Invisible Children Club and has organized an on-campus screening for several hundred students, as well as campus fundraisers. He is having fun being on the yearbook staff and is involved in other clubs on campus, including the Environmental Alliance and Stand Up to Cancer. He has been volunteering at the Ocean Institute since he was a freshman, volunteers at Emerald Cove Day Camp as a counselor and works as pizza chef extraordinaire at Papa Murphy’s. In his free time Peter like listening to music on his record player, going to concerts, traveling, snowboarding and spending time with his friends and family. Peter is an IB candidate and hopes to attend a four-year university in California or on the East Coast focusing on environmental science or engineering.

Melia Bernal Class of 2013 Melia is a junior. She has been a member of the SCHS Girls Cross-Country Team and the Track and Field Team as a distance runner since freshman year. On campus, she is involved in Be a Hero Become a Donor, Autism Youth Ambassadors, Spanish National Honor Society, and Hugs and Hope Club; she is also the secretary of For the Love of Dance Club and the president of H3, a multicultural club. She has been in the Dual-Immersion Program since kindergarten and has been playing piano for the past seven years. Since Melia was four years old she has been a member of Lokelani’s Rhythm of the Islands, a Polynesian dance group, and has performed Hawaiian, Tahitian, Maori and Samoan dances all over the western United States, Hawaii, Tahiti, and Japan. Melia has a passion for languages and people and she aspires to travel the world in her future. In her spare time, Melia enjoys baking cookies, exercising, and spending time with her family and friends.

Raina Borum Class of 2013 Raina is a junior at San Clemente High School and is pursuing the IB diploma. An avid violinist, she has been concertmistress of the San Clemente High School Chamber Orchestra for two years and first violinist of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, for three years. Raina has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall and asked to join musical programs at Chapman University and Schlernn, Italy. Recently, she was offered a scholarship to Idyllwild Arts Academy. Although music plays a giant part in her life, Raina’s true passion is in biology and medicine. At SCHS, she founded the San Clemente Public Health Team, an awareness club that educates students about health issues. Raina hopes to double major in biology and musical performance and eventually attend medical school. She aspires to become a cardiologist, or maybe even a traveling doctor in thirdworld countries. Raina enjoys spending time with family, listening to many varieties of music and seeing the world. Without her strong-hearted and supportive parents, she would never have gone as far as she has now. 6 ď€
Chandler Boyd Class of 2013 Chandler’s life revolves around dance and the San Clemente High School Dance Team, which has provided her with the opportunity to serve as Junior Varsity captain, and be awarded for both solo and team performances. Luckily, between practices, concerts and competitions, the Dance Team also participates in community events such as preparing lunches for the homeless, putting together care packages for our troops, and raising funds for Relay for Life and Children’s Hospital of Orange County. School work is also important, as is involvement in school clubs, dance classes, spending time with family, and balancing it all with a fun social life.

Elizabeth Bracken Class of 2013 Elizabeth, a junior at San Clemente High School, is looking forward to her years ahead as a senior and college student. Over the years, Elizabeth has received multiple academic and athletic awards and generally spends her free time reading, babysitting and spending time with her friends and family. Elizabeth grew up dancing ballet and jazz, but this past summer found a new passion and love for crosscountry. She looks forward to college where she plans to major in business and enter the business world, where she can continue setting and achieving her goals. Elizabeth loves to travel and wants to visit as many countries as possible in her lifetime. She wants to experience different and exotic cultures around the world and she hopes to backpack around Europe at some point.

Ian Christner Class of 2013 Ian has striven to be creative and motivated throughout his education. He enjoys problem solving, especially with his technical and video computer skills via creative writing and art. Ian also enjoys volunteering with youth groups, both through the Boy Scouts of America and at SCHS through the AVID Math Tutoring program. Additionally, he has been a part of the San Clemente chapter of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life since its inception. Ian has studied Spanish and Japanese and traveled in the U.S. and abroad. He has spent time in South America and is saving for a trip to Japan this summer. Ian’s goal is to attend a four-year university where he can continue to strive to be a professional computer software/gaming technologist.

Derek Cousineau Class of 2013 From an early age, Derek has had the desire to learn. Be it learning to cook, playing the piano, competing in swimming and water polo, or in the classroom, He loves learning something new. As Derek approaches the end of his high school career, academics direct his daily tasks, along with his commitment to water polo, but he has found a new hobby in film photography, which allows him to unwind from the daily stresses of school work and workouts. Derek is learning to balance his overachieving personality with things he enjoys, and hopes to end up in a college town where he can reap the benefits of a high level of academics, a competitive water polo program and the ability to explore a new city and all it has to offer. He is an International Baccalaureate candidate and plans to complete the challenge this program offers. Derek is 1st out of 720 students in his junior class and has a 4.5 grade point average.

Jamie Davis Class of 2012 Jamie is a senior. She has been a member of the Triton Girls’ Tennis Team for the past three years, and is involved with Key Club, Books of Hope, and Spanish Honor Society, of which she is currently president. Jamie volunteers for the Mission Hospital Student Auxiliary, where she enjoys greeting and directing visitors as a shift coordinator, and is also a co-chairman of the Winter and Senior Service Awards Banquets. In her free time, she enjoys tutoring and spending time with her friends and family. Jamie hopes to be accepted into either a biology or biomedical engineering program at one of the many universities to which she has applied.

Alexis Fredriksen Class of 2012 Alexis is a senior. She was a member of the SCHS Cheer Team for the past three years. This year she chose a new path and joined ASB. Alexis loves being a part of all school activities and showing her school spirit. On the weekends you can find Alexis making delicious lattes at Starbucks, where she works as a barista. For the past three summers Alexis has worked as a lifeguard at Wild Rivers. Since her freshman year Alexis has been a devoted member of the Be a Hero, Become a Donor club and this year started a club of her own, Students Against Drunk Driving. Alexis volunteers for Orange County Safe Rides, an organization that protects teenagers from the dangers of drinking and driving. Alexis loves traveling, making new friends, babysitting and most recently, snowboarding. She plans to attend a university in the fall at which she can expand her horizons as she studies psychology, joins a sorority, and makes the most of her college experience.

Jennifer Garred Class of 2012 Jennifer is a senior and loving it! While she is an active tutor for her peers at the high school, she especially enjoys working with the Assisteens League of Capistrano Valley. Jennifer has been a member of this organization for five years and has served as second vice chairman and is the current chairman. In addition, she volunteers to tutor younger students at both the local Boys and Girls Club and Our Lady of Fatima Parish School. When she has time to relax, Jennifer cherishes the time spent with her family, shopping with her mom, watching the “Big Bang Theory” with her dad, and even driving her little brother to his friends’ houses. In the fall she will begin her pre-pharmacy coursework at a college yet to be determined.

Graham Goodwin Class of 2012 Graham is a senior. He has been a member of San Clemente’s Cross-Country and Track Team since his sophomore year, working his way up from the frosh-soph level to varsity. He is co-president of Hikers for Environmental Awareness and an active member of the student-run Environmental Alliance. Graham has been involved with the school newspaper since his sophomore year as a staff writer, photography editor, and editor-in-chief. He has spent the past two summers traveling with his sister teaching mentally challenged kids how to ride bikes and working as a lifeguard. He enjoys long walks on the beach, candle-lit dinners, and acid jazz. Graham plans to study either civil or environmental engineering at a university in California or on the East Coast.

Amanda Huffman Class of 2013 Amanda is a junior at San Clemente High School. She has lived in San Clemente her entire life, in fact her father is a San Clemente High School graduate. She is a five-year member of National Charity League, Monarch Chapter, and have held numerous positions including sunshine officer and vice president of philanthropy. She earned the class award for most philanthropy hours as a freshman, working 66.5 hours that year, and has complete more than 250 philanthropy service hours in her five years with National Charity League. Amanda was a member of the SCHS Varsity Golf Team this year, having been on the Development Team as a freshman, and the Junior Varsity Team as a sophomore. She has been a member of the A Capella Women’s Choir for two years. Amanda enjoys golfing, singing and writing. She plans to major in creative writing in college and become an author.

Adam Ishaq Class of 2012 Adam is a senior at San Clemente High School. A committed musician, he has been involved in the Triton Music Program since his freshmen year, participating in the school’s jazz band, winter drumline, concert orchestra, chamber orchestra, pit orchestra, and marching band. A member of the San Clemente High School Newspaper for the last two years, this year he takes pride in being the paper’s opinion editor. Arduously committing himself to improving the high school’s music program, Adam is president of the school’s Band Union, fighting for the rights of musicians schoolwide. Striving to improve his community, Adam has been a volunteer at St. Michael’s Church for the past three years, while also volunteering at Family Assistance Ministries for the past year. In his free time, Adam enjoys taunting his friends and constantly discussing “baylife” and his cat.

Neda Kanani Class of 2012 Neda is a senior. She has been involved in many school clubs such as Key Club and is vice president of the Junior Youth Empowerment Project. Neda has volunteered at FAM and for the past four years has been involved in Baha’i inspired children’s classes and junior youth groups. She enjoys playing the piano, being outdoors, and spending time with her amazing family and friends. She hopes to attend one of the UC’s this coming fall and pursue a major in communications.

Kris Klein Class of 2012 Kris is a senior. Since his freshman year he has been on the Varsity Boys’ Swim Team, where he swims primarily breaststroke and backstroke. Kris also plays the violin for the Chamber Orchestra and volunteers teaching swim lessons through a non-profit organization in San Juan Capistrano. Over the last two years, Kris has been involved in the Books of Hope Club, the Interact Club, Academic Decathlon, Model Congress, and Model United Nations. In his junior year, Kris was selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and the American Legion’s Boys’ State Conference in Sacramento. Kris hopes to attend the best college possible to pursue an education in political science and hopes to attend law school.

Ian Kos Class of 2013 Ian is a junior working toward the International Baccalaureate diploma. He has been involved in Triton Aquatics, playing water polo and swimming for the past two years, and plans to continue these sports throughout high school. He values his time spent with the Be a Hero, Become a Donor club at SCHS, as well as, with Boy Scout Troop 737. With a deep passion for the ocean environment and humanity, he has found that working as an ocean lifeguard for the City of San Clemente’s Marine Safety Division provides a huge degree of job satisfaction. Ian enjoys spending his time with his family and friends when he is not sailing or out on the water. He hopes to attend a four-year college within the UC system or a school on the East Coast.

Jesse Kriege Class of 2012 Jesse is a senior. He enjoys writing, science and above all, the ocean. He got involved in school publications his sophomore year, first as photo editor for the Triton newspaper and now as editor in chief of the Thalassa yearbook. Jesse joined the SCHS Cross-Country and Track teams in 10th grade and continues to run. He is involved in medical missions abroad and leadership programs at home, travelling to India and attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Jesse enjoys spearfishing, scuba diving and underwater photography. He has worked as a karate instructor and ocean lifeguard and intends to pursue a career in medicine. He plans to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to study molecular biology.

Molly Mann Class of 2012 Molly is a senior. She is captain of the Girls’ Varsity Cross-Country and Track teams and head photographer and photo editor on the Thalassa yearbook staff. She was the Sign Language Club president for two years and is a proud member of the Best Buddies Club. She is the SCHS class of 2012’s ambassador for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program and loves volunteering with her church in Mexico. Molly is an intern with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research. She loves photography, running, the beach, and watching romantic comedies. Molly loves all of the friends and family who have shaped who she is and will be. She plans to attend a university on the West Coast and compete in collegiate running.

Kelly Shannon Mathiesen Class of 2012 Kelly is a senior. She has been a part of the San Clemente High School Dance Team for the past four years. When she is not at dance, working at Bagel Shack with her friends, or furiously working on studies at Peet’s Coffee, she enjoys preoccupying herself with art, going outside for jaunts on the trail, and watching Harry Potter movies. On Dance Team, Kelly has been freshman representative, Junior Varisity captain, competition captain, and currently is co-captain with her best friend, Maria Rose McGuire. She has participated in numerous community services through Dance Team and other opportunities, her favorite being Relay for Life because of the honorable luminary ceremony. She intends to pursue her love for art, design, and the environment and study landscape architecture next fall at a major university.

Caili McDaniel Class of 2013 To summarize the fantastic opportunities Caili has been afforded thus far in High School, one word alone could suffice: blessed. She cherishes her job as Community Service Captain on the Dance Team, otherwise known as her second family. Among her favorite activities are smiling, writing, dancing, meeting new people, thinking big, playing piano and volleyball and spending time with the ones she loves. She was honored to be chosen as the sophomore representative to the HOBY Youth Conference last year, named a finalist in the Nestle Best of Youth Competition and presented the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. She encounters endless joy from her roles with the Shea Center for Therapeutic Riding, Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, San Clemente Red Ribbon, Character Counts, Watershed Task Force, campus clubs, and as the club president of Hugs and Hope for Sick Children. Within the coming year, she looks forward to exploring all her options for a university in California so there will be “no beach out of reach.” Above all, she is fundamentally led by the wisdom and grace of Jesus Christ, through whom she knows she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. 23
Maria McGuire Class of 2012 Maria is a senior. She has been a member of the Dance Team for the past four years and is currently president of Key Club. In her free time, she enjoys doing Ms. Shick’s study guides and posting pictures of herself on Facebook. Her friends encourage her to please stop singing, and she is famous in the parking lot at school for being the best at parking. She likes chocolate, cupcakes, and long walks on the beach. She’s really enjoying her senior year and is so excited for everything to come!

Hayley McVicar Class of 2012 Hayley is a senior. She has been an IB diploma candidate all four years of her high school career. She is an equestrian rider and showed in 2009. She has been taking yoga classes since 2007 and became a yoga instructor in 2010. She has spent hours volunteering at the Shea Center, a horse facility for disabled riders, since 2010. Hayley loves reading, equestrian riding, yoga and listening to music. In the fall of 2012, she plans to attend the finest university that will accept her in hopes to earn a degree in journalism in the United States, the United Kingdom or France.

Sofia Medrano Class of 2013 Sofia is a junior. She has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten and is working to finish her Gold Award this year by continuing her own girls’ leadership mentoring program, called Circulo de Amigas, at Las Palmas Elementary School. She has been a member of the Triton Girls’ Volleyball Team for the past two years and also has played at T-Street Volleyball Club. She has been involved in school groups such as California Scholarship Federation, Be a Hero Become a Donor and the It Gets Better Project. She started the Autism Youth Ambassador club this year and is vice president of the multicultural club, Hands Hearts and Hellos. Sofia has volunteered at her church, St. Edward the Confessor, and also has become more involved in the Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) foundation. Sofia enjoys being a member of the yearbook staff and loves the outdoors, photography, and spending time with her family and friends. She plans to pursue a liberal arts education at a university on the East Coast.

Bill Morris Class of 2012 Bill is a senior. He likes to surf and play volleyball. He is the middle blocker for his club team Main Beach Laguna and the high school team. He is looking forward to his upcoming senior season and hopes his team can make a solid run in CIF. When he’s not busy with volleyball, he likes to go down to Trestles or Rivi to surf. Bill has received an “A” in every class he’s taken, and hopes to attend UCLA next year to major in business.

Kyle Murphy Class of 2012 As a senior at SCHS Kyle has been involved in many groups on campus, but the organization most important to him is the Associated Student Body. Kyle has held the positions of: ASB president as both a junior and a senior; ASB commissioner of elections and awards; and ASB freshman representative. He received the Achievement Award for Student Government in 2010 and 2011. Kyle has worked with ASB to help the Dance Team collect, pack, and send care boxes to Camp Pendleton Marines serving in Afghanistan. He has been involved in various clubs, drama productions, the Dance Team co-ed performances and Air Guitar. Kyle joined the Golf Team his freshman year and earned a varsity letter his junior year. Kyle considers the honor of being named a Scholar Athlete one of his greatest achievements at SCHS. Off campus Kyle has dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours to San Clemente Little League and held summer jobs as a bus boy and a golf instructor’s assistant. He looks forward to continuing his career in student government at a four-year university in the fall. 28 ď€
Jamie Park Class of 2012 Jamie is a senior at San Clemente High School. She is a four-year cheerleader and currently the Varsity Cheer captain and has been the Junior Varsity captain as well. She also has been a violinist for the San Clemente Chamber Orchestra for the past four years and volunteers with the Be a Hero Become a Donor club, helping run and organize blood drives. She enjoys being involved with her school as well as the community as she has been involved with Model Congress, Hiking Club and San Clemente Presbyterian Youth Group. Jamie loves hiking, baking, going to the beach and spending time with her friends and family. She has dreams of becoming a pediatric oncologist later in life and hopes to attend a fouryear university majoring in pre-medicine on the East Coast.

Gillian Perry Class of 2014 Gillian is a sophomore and so excited to be a part of the National Honors Society. She loves to play the clarinet and is the spirit leader of the Triton Marching Alliance and concert master of the Wind Ensemble. She is also involved in the Triton Theater Arts Program where she enjoys working in both cast and crew. She has also enjoyed being a peer buddy and secretary for the San Clemente High School chapter of Best Buddies. Outside of school, Gillian is a member of the Laguna Playhouse Youth Repertory theater program and performs in various productions, including an annual studentdirected show. She is an active Girl Scout and plans to earn her Gold Award before she graduates. In her free time, Gillian loves to read, especially classics, swim, and spend time with her family and friends, including her big golden retriever Jeeps.

Austin Patrick Reagan Class of 2012 Austin is a senior. On campus, he is the president of the Model United Nations Club and led a group of 16 SCHS students at the 2011 UCLA MUN Conference in November. He is also president of the Habitat for Humanity Club, an organization he is very passionate about and for which he has volunteered for more than 250 hours. In 2011, he received the Gold Level President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Obama. Austin in a three-year Boys’ Golf Team member, and tutors in Spanish and math through the school’s free tutorial program. Off campus, Austin has held a position as a writer for the San Clemente Times and Dana Point Times since he was a sophomore. He enjoys writing about local current events and plans to write for the newspaper of whatever college he enters next fall. Austin enjoys traveling abroad and spending time with friends. He hopes to attend a university on the East Coast and plans to major in Environmental Studies and Public Policy.

Summer Secrest Class of 2012 Summer is a senior at San Clemente High School. She is an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate and is one of four students in the top 1 percent of her class. Outside of her studies, Summer participates in two varsity sports: softball and golf. She is a team co-captain for this year’s varsity Softball Team and plays on an elite club team based in Huntington Beach. Summer was on the 2011 Homecoming Court and is a member of the Capistrano Valley Assisteens League. In her spare time, Summer loves to hang out with her friends, hike, go shopping, read, and write. She aspires to become a writer and publish a book. She is also considering attending law school. Summer will be attending New York City’s Columbia University in the fall where she will play on the softball team.

Iman Shull Class of 2012 Iman is a senior at San Clemente High School. He is an ecstatic candidate of the marvelous International Baccalaureate diploma. In school he also finds time to: sing with the Madrigals Choir, dance with the Lovely Ladies in IB-Dance, and is the founder and president of the Junior Youth Empowerment Project, a club in search of role models that helps middle-schoolers find their full potential in life. Besides reading and analyzing Plath poetry, Iman spends his free time with his family and friends, volunteers in the SMMC Emergency Room, goes shopping with his Sweetness, and animates his own Junior Youth Group. He is pursuing a career in medicine and will become a physician someday.

Natasha Skrbin Class of 2012 As a high school student, Natasha has always strived to achieve the highest grades possible and challenge herself in every way. Aside from working hard at school and studying, she participates in clubs and community service endeavors. This summer, she interned for a CPA office in San Diego. She has been part of the Spanish Honors Society, the SCHS Tennis Team, and Books of Hope. Along with being involved in the Environmental Awareness Club, she started her own campus cleanup club to further improve SCHS’s learning environment while beautifying the community and promoting sustainable practices. The majority of her family lives in Turkey, so every summer she visits them there. Personally observing the lifestyle of such a distinctive ethnicity not only helped her to appreciate her heritage, but also provided her with marvelous insights to a culture far removed from her American roots. Natasha’s schoolwork, extracurricular activities, world travels and interest in other cultures has shaped the person she is today and hopes to improve upon through her university studies. 34 ď€
Carly Stiles Class of 2012 Carly is a senior. She has played soccer for thirteen years with her club team and with the high school. She is also involved with Habitat for Humanity, Key Club, Books of Hope, and coaches indoor soccer at the Boys & Girls Club. Carly hopes to be enrolled in a good college next fall where she plans to study math and somehow get a career out of that. Carly loves her family and friends and would like to thank them for all of their love and support.

Nicholas Vermillion Class of 2012 Nicholas is a senior. He has been a proud member of the San Clemente Boys’ Basketball Team for the past four years, playing the center and power forward positions. He was captain of the sophomore and junior varsity teams and was named Best Defensive Player for his 63 blocked shots in his sophomore season and Coach’s Choice Player for his hard work and dedication to the team. Nick has also been a volunteer each summer, working with the SCHS basketball program as a coach and referee during skills clinics to teach the youth in the community how to play basketball. Nickolas also enjoys spending time with his family and friends and hanging out at the beach in his free time. He plans to attend either Cal State Long Beach or the University of San Diego to pursue a degree in finance and business administration.

Isabelle White Class of 2013 Isabelle is a junior. In her last three years she has been an active member of the Be A Hero Become A Donor club, Best Buddies, and the It Gets Better Project. Her freshman and sophomore years she was involved in the San Clemente Theater Arts Program, and joined Associated Student Body this year as junior class president. In her time outside of school, Isabelle works at Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt and tries to spend as much time as possible with her family. Isabelle plans to attend a college on the East Coast.

Sarah Wyman Class of 2013 Sarah is a junior who enjoys playing cello in the chamber orchestra and is an avid member of the maritime community. Sarah has served in demanding leadership positions with the Mariners 936 Sea Scout group and South Coast Sailing Team. She recently completed the requirements to achieve the rank of quartermaster, which is the equivalent of an Eagle Scout and the highest rank offered by the Sea Scouts. In addition to her sailing commitments, Sarah dedicates a great amount of time to volunteering. Over the course of two years, Sarah spent more than 140 hours tutoring her peers in math and volunteered as a sailing instructor over the summer. She has also performed at local senior centers with her cello studio during the holidays. Although Sarah does not know where she wishes to attend college or what she will study, it is likely that her major will be in humanities.

Kendall Yamane Class of 2012 Kendall is a senior. She has participated in the high school softball program for the past three years and volunteered for the Ocean Institute in Dana Point for the past year and a half. Kendall serves as co-vice president of Key Club and is an active member in the Environmental Alliance and Hikers for Environmental Awareness. In her free time, Kendall enjoys a good cry after reading Nicolas Sparks novels and playing with her cat, Charlie. She also likes spending time with family and friends, especially if popsicles are involved. Kendall plans on attending any university that falls outside of an 80-mile radius of San Clemente.
