AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

for children

An Enemy of the People is about Dr Stockmann, who discovers that the bathing water in the city’s spa is contaminated with dangerous bacteria. He expects people to value his discovery and thinks it will help improve the city. Instead, his political enemies try to destroy him, attempting to silence him with threats. Dr Stockmann stands his ground and in the last act, he delivers one of Ibsen’s most famous lines: “The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone.”

An Enemy of the People is a play that outraged people in its day, but that has gained fresh relevance in our own era. This is the first book in a new series for children about the works of Henrik Ibsen.

With the aid of illustrations and simplified text suitable for younger readers, the series aims to introduce Ibsen’s plays to new generations all over the world. Ibsen is the world’s second-most performed playwright after Shakespeare. This series will give children an understanding of what Ibsen’s texts are about and what they can teach us today.

Kåre Conradi (b. 1972) is one of Norway's most famous actors. He's educated at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Conradi has acted in a number of films, TV shows and theatres, including West Side Story and Hamlet. Kåre Conradi has been an Ibsen ambassador for several years, and is the leader of the Norwegian Ibsen Company.

Sunniva Fluge Hole is a character designer and illustrator from Norway, based in Oslo.

PEER GYNT

Henrik Ibsen for children

Peer Gynt, liar extraordinaire, grows up in a valley in Jotunheimen, where he wanders around in the mountains and tells tall tales about the adventures he has there. The life of a Norwegian farmer’s isn’t enough for him: his thirst for adventure and lack of any sense of responsibility drive him out into the big wide world. We follow Peer on his voyage, while his devoted mother Åse and his beloved Solveig sit waiting for him to come back home.

Peer Gynt is Ibsen's most famous play. This is the second book in a new series for children about the works of Henrik Ibsen.

101 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU GROW UP

You have to learn lots of weird things before you become a grown-up: reading, writing, putting your hand up in class, brushing your teeth, saying “Yes, please” and “No, thank you” and “How are you doing?”. But you’ll learn absolutely NONE of that in 101 things to do Before You Grow up.

This book is about all the funny, crazy, exciting, wonderful and magical things you can do in childhood that grownups don’t often get to do.

Suggested activities include:

• Talking in rhyme!

• Making yourself incomprehensible!

• Living backwards for a day!

• Going on holiday at home!

• Swapping families!

Readers are guided through an inventive universe of short texts and colourful illustrations that are bursting with energy, humour and playfulness. The book aims to encourage children to hold onto the unique aspects of childhood that also, oddly enough, help make us better, cooler and more creative grownups later in life.

TWO LITTLE KNIGHTS

The princess has gone missing – has she been kidnapped by the dragon?

Rosebush and Bang are sent off to bring her back. But it isn’t as easy as you might think. The Princess always causes so much fuss, and the dragon isn’t exactly a cuddly toy… and besides, Rosebush has just polished his sword. Maybe they should just drop the whole thing? That’s when Bang gets a text from the king – with dungeon emojis and all. No, it looks as if they’ll just have to get the job done!

This is a book about courage and heroic deeds, about getting dressed up and a little bit about not being all that bothered about princesses – or girls in general.

THE KNIGHTS GO FOR GOLD

The two little knights are back, just in time for the large knight tournament. And just like last time there is some seriousness beneath all the silliness: Why can’t girls do the same as boys? And does one HAVE to be tough and brave, just because one is a boy? The Middle Ages are almost at an end, after all!

It’s the annual knight tournament in Klampenborg, and Rosebush and Bang have been training for a whole year. They’ve probably snuck away a bit too, because it’s a little dangerous to do both sword fighting and archery – not to mention jousting. They don’t really want to take part, but Princess Begonia does! The problem is just that the King has said she’s not allowed to take part because she’s a girl. So the two little knights must help her to secretly prepare for the tournament. They have to train her for the exercises and find armour that will hide her face. Neither of those things are easy!

THE KNIGHTS AND THE GREAT BONFIRE

It’s Midsummer’s Eve, and Bang the knight has been given the task of lighting the great Midsummer bonfire. It’s a huge honour, but he’s dreading it! What if he can’t get the fire lit? Maybe he’d better practise a bit beforehand. But that could go badly wrong too – because once you’ve started a fire, it’s kind of hard to stop it again...

Bang and his fellow knight Rosebush head into the forest, but before they know it, they’ve been sent to Klampenburg Castle to look for Zippo, the Dragon’s little nephew. Zippo has been kidnapped by none other than Blackbeard, the wickedest robber in the country!

But fortunately, help arrives from an unexpected quarter…

The goats attend the Christmas tree lighting. They eat gingerbread and talk to their friends, and everyone talks about Santa. But Santa has never visited the goats. Maybe he can’t find their home? But if they write their wish list and send it to Santa, THEN maybe he will come! As soon as they think it, they do it. What they want most of all is a sled with a steering wheel.

THE ANGEL WITH TOOSHORT WINGS

Once upon a time – back when the world was created – there was a plump little angel called Jorkalel. No matter how hard he tried, he never could learn to fly. He just tumbled from cloud to cloud instead. The other angels had to keep saving him to stop him from crashing. In the end, they got bored of looking after him. When that happened, Jorkalel was given the job of tending the Garden instead. He became the first gardener in Paradise. Jorkalel was good at getting the flowers to bloom. But he was even better at looking after the animals, especially when they needed help and comfort.

A beautiful tale about taking care of those who are a little bit different.

THE TURBO TWINS AND THE GREAT DODGEBALL BATTLE

Turbo Twins Robert and Harald have to move from the big city to the countryside, because their mother gets a whim and needs more space for her thoughts.

The house they’re moving to is run down, has an outdoor toilet and the whole area smells like cow dung. The Turbo Twins look forward to starting a new school, but already on their first day it turns out the entire school and everyone in the village is completely obsessed with one single ting: DODGEBALL. In addition to this, the twins end up in the same class as the school bully and dodgeball state champion, Sølvi.

Sølvi challenges the twins to create their own dodgeball team and sign up for the big tournament that takes place every year.

But who should be on their team? What happened to the new boy in their class who disappeared without a trace after the last tournament? And how in the world do you even play dodgeball?

The Turbo Twins and the Great Dodgeball Battle is hysterically funny and heartwarming story about being a good brother, a good friend, and a good person.

THE TURBO TWINS AND THE MAYOR’S EVIL PLAN

Harald and Robert have settled down pretty well in the countryside. They’ve made some friends at school and spend lots of time with Sigrid, Rudolf and the animals on the next-door farm. But when the twins return to rural life after an unsuccessful autumn break in Oslo, they find that everything is topsy-turvy.

The local council has decided to build an enormous motorway in the village and it’s going to pass RIGHT THROUGH Sigrid and Rudolf’s farmyard. Sigrid and Rudolf aren’t convinced by the council’s promise of a new flat above the supermarket with a massage shower and underfloor heating: they don’t want to move and the Turbo Twins have to help them!

Harald and Robert decide to stop the council’s plans, but little do they know what the evil village mayor is capable of. How do you even stop a motorway? Can children stand up to adults who are being unfair? And what on earth will happen to the animals if the farm is demolished?

The Turbo Twins and the Mayor’s Evil Plan is a hilarious, heart-warming story about being creative, standing up to the powers-that-be and sticking up for other people.

If it wasn’t for Jørgen’s best buddy Mikkel, he’d probably have died of a stomach ulcer. Or loneliness. Or getting beaten up. But since he does have Mikkel, everything is fine. And he has his aunt too. And as a last resort, there’s always God, who’s okay to talk to at night – though not about the big issues. Mostly about small stuff. Like how to catch the eye of the prettiest girl in school and things like that.

Jørgen gets pretty scared sometimes, but he always feels safe with Mikkel. Mikkel is like Jørgen’s lifesaver. But one day something terrible happens – and now perhaps Jørgen's the one who’ll have to be a lifesaver.

I took my mobile out of my pocket. My fingers were trembling. So was the huge chandelier above us. But just as I went to type in the number for the emergency services, the screen went completely black. As though the battery had conked out as well.

Then I heard: footsteps. Thump. Thump.

Swish…

They came closer, towards us, and I pressed even closer against the wall. Pepper clawed and squeaked restlessly beneath my jumper and I took him out so I could calm him down. At that exact moment, the strange man stomped out of the office. His left foot crashed hard against the floor. Thump. Then he slammed a cane down onto the floor. Thump. Then he dragged his right foot behind him. Swish …

He stopped. Just outside the narrow, secret door. Just a few metres away from Rasmus and me.

There was something in the way this long man moved, the way he tilted his head. He made everything inside me conk out as well.

Pepper, however, hissed.

The strange man immediately stopped whistling. He stood there, completely unmoving, like a solid tree, his back to us. My heart pounded in my ears.

Then he turned around.

The brim of his uniform cap shielded his eyes, but I saw his face. It was long and nar-row. His nose was long and narrow. His mouth was like a thin, narrow, crooked line. At the same time, a smell crept towards us, a burning smell…

The man just stood there. As though he were giving us the opportunity to escape. May-be he preferred to hunt his prey. But I sat glued to the floor with a ticking bomb in my chest. There was no longer any connection between my brain and my legs. My body had decided to play dead.

Then the man thrusted his chin up and those narrow eyes became visible. They were filled with the darkest, blackest night – and looking straight at me. I was completely certain…that…this…would…be…my last…

Then he turned back towards the secret door.

I couldn’t say anything. It didn’t look like Rasmus could either. We just stared at the strange man. He lifted one leg. It hung in the hair like a lonely branch and quivered in front of the papered-over door. Was he going to kick it open?

But then.

His leg went straight through the door…

Not just his leg, but every part of this long man went straight through the door, as if it were made of air.

NORDIC NATURE

The nature of Norway and the Nordic region is unique. Although fewer species live here than in rainforests, tropical coral reefs or the African savannas, many of the animals and plants are among the world’s coolest, fastest, smartest and toughest. They can cope with cold, heat, rain and snow. They can survive on a starvation diet and are great at hiding.

Come along on a journey from the highest peaks and the wettest marshes to the deepest oceans and the world beneath the city streets. Get to know all kinds of animals, plants and fungi – both rare and common.

Few other countries have as much untouched nature, clean water and fresh air as the Nordic region. A walk in the forest, on the beach or in the city will never be the same again after reading this book.

The world-class illustrations are by artist Esther van Hulsen, and the text is written by award-winning author and journalist, Ole Mathismoen.

AND ODDER JOBS

A book of fun facts about really odd jobs that you’ll never believe exist.

Most children wonder what they’ll be when they grow up. Who doesn’t dream of being a footballer or a popstar? Or maybe a firefighter, a doctor, a hairdresser or a lawyer? But why do the same thing as everyone else? Why not do something completely different? How about being a dinosaur-duster, a snakemilker or an armpit-sniffer?

In Odd and Even Odder Jobs, Bjørn F. Rørvik has come up with more than 50 professions that you probably never knew existed. There’s plenty of fun and peculiar stuff, and some of the jobs sound really unlikely. But all of them are absolutely real – and all of them need to be done!

Bjørn F. Rørvik (b. 1964) is one of the most successful and renowned children's books authors in Norway. His book-series about The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Purriot and Fox & Piglet has sold in hundreds of thousands of books in Norway alone. His writing is full of crazy humour and original concoctions that make them great fun for readers of all ages.

Joachim Berg (b. 1984) lives in Oslo, and works as an illustrator and animator.

REAL SPORTS HEROES

The coolest heroes are the ones who are brave enough to take action off the field too.

The biggest sporting stars are major celebrities. They have masses of fans who’ll cheer them on whatever they do. That gives them an opportunity to make an impact on the world around them. Some of the biggest stars choose to use that opportunity. They want to make the world a better place. And they choose to do so in different ways.

In this book readers will meet heroes like Muhammad Ali, who was jailed for opposing the Vietnam War, Marcus Rashford who fights for free school meals in the United Kingdom, and Ingrid Olsdatter Vestby, the first female ski-jumper, who paved the way for other women.

The book tells the story of fifty heroes in a variety of different sports.

Taylor og Norge

Visste du at ...

I think not):

Fifteen

1 Sparks Fly

2 Mine

HANDBOOK FOR YOUNG ANTIRACISTS

Racism is a tough topic for us adults to navigate and it’s an issue that many of us find particularly challenging to discuss with our children. What are we supposed to say? Where should we start?

Tinashe Williamson makes her authorial debut with a handbook that illuminates, engages, and encourages the most important thing of all: dialogue. Through ten chapters and ten fictional characters, Williamson answers questions about what racism actually is, why representation matters, and what to say if you see somebody being discriminated against because of their skin colour.

A must for all children ages 9 and up – and their parents too!

«Tinashe Williamson has written a book that is easy to understand and utterly engaging. The book obviously has great potential to start important conversations between people from different generations.» DAGBLADET
