TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Engines rely on the timing belt to keep their moving parts in sync and running smoothly. Belts are generally replaced at service intervals, but what are the most common causes of premature timing belt failure? • Incorrect belt tension • Crimping of the belt • Foreign objects in the drive system All timing components wear out including oil seals, tensioners, and guide pulleys. Replacing only the belt could lead to one of the other components failing and causing major damage to the engine. It is recommended to replace all components at the same time with a timing kit that includes all the parts you need - just like the NAPA Timing Kit.
A noisy or damaged belt is a sure sign of a well-worn belt due for replacement. Identify the type of noise and damage, to determine where the malfunction lies: • A squeal indicates a lack of tension often caused by a failing tensioner • A chirp can be the result of misaligned belts caused by improperly mounted or worn pulley bearings • Grinding or tapping noises are caused by contamination such as grit, rocks or salt • Side fray occurs with extreme pulley misalignment or tensioner pivot bushing failure • Pilling happens after excessive belt slippage or contaminated pulleys • Glazing may occur when lack of tension allows continual belt slip 1.5 Preferred Supplier Bonus Points
