OFF-ROAD READY Going off-road is a great Australian past time, with thousands of us exploring many of the country’s stunning landscapes each year. While some go further than others, it’s important to be prepared for the great outdoors, even for a day trip. Basics include: • Driving lights - round or bar, ensure you have a polycarbonate lens, aluminium heat sink and 6000K output for longevity and visibility. • Inspection lighting - find your way around site or your engine bay in need of a night-time emergency. • Charging - every battery needs power, especially the one in your phone. • Spares - having a selection of fuses, tape and zip ties handy can solve many situations.
THE FIVE HOT TIPS FOR SOLDERING 1. Always wear eye protection and heat resistant gloves. Cover all skin to prevent burns on your arms. 2. Keep your workspace clean and uncluttered, particularly free of anything that can ignite as solder can drip or splatter. 3. Don’t rest the tip of the iron on the bench and ensure it’s kept free of build up. 4. When soldering two or more wires together, insulate the finished solder with heat shrink. This is best applied before soldering then slip it over the exposed join. 5. Don’t solder anything connected to active power. A soldered wire is effectively an exposed wire and should be treated as such.
