SHOCKS Shocks are critical for the safe control, steering and braking of a vehicle. If they’re not in peak condition, worn shocks will add 2 metres to emergency stopping distances at 50km/h, increase tyre wear by up to 7% and reduce grip making it harder to steer. Signs of worn shock absorbers include: • Increased braking distance • Abnormal tyre wear • Less control of the vehicle, especially around corners • Oil on outside of body of shock when inspected

Most drivers only notice their shocks are worn by the time something goes wrong. Unfortunately, when coupled with a reduction in driving control, worn shocks will cost your customer in the long term. Many workshops only look for leaking shock absorbers but there’s more you can inspect for your customer to ensure their suspension is in the safest condition.
THE FIVE BEST WAYS TO IDENTIFY WORN SHOCKS 1. Listen for knocking sound in a road test, when driving over speed bumps 2. Bounce test the vehicle; it should stop after 1-1.5 bounces 3. Visually inspect the shocks for leaks 4. Check the bump stops for bottoming out 5. Check for irregular tyre wear cupping; a series of flat spots at regular intervals
