Secret #1 Digestive Capacity * The quantity of food intake should be directly proportional to the power of digestion and metabolism; Always eat according to how much you feel that you are able to digest. Each person is different; don’t compare to how much others eat. This can be always the same for some people, for others it may vary from day to day and meal to meal. This also varies from season to season, for example people generally desire less food in summer but have a bigger appetite during winter. more on

Q. When should we stop eating? A: When there is relief from hunger and thirst, when you have the feeling of

comfort in standing,

sitting, walking, exhaling, inhaling, laughing and talking.

If you can’t

do any of the above with ease it means you have eaten too much.

Additionally, there should be no pressure in the stomach due to food taken, no obstruction to the proper functioning in heart, no pressure in the sides of the chest, or excessive heaviness in the abdomen. If you are not hungry, it usually means that you don’t need to eat (there are exceptions). It definitely means that your digestive capacity is low at that point in time. If you must eat when you are not hungry, don’t overdo it. You can fill your stomach from two thirds to three quarters with food and drink. Any more will disturb digestive capacity, making the gastric juices less powerful as they have more ‘material’ to deal with. 2 Carabulife.com

Secret #2 Time of Day The time when we can digest the largest meal is midday. Just as the warmest part of the day is when the sun is directly above us, our ‘internal fire’ is also at its peak. From 10am to 2pm should be the time of your largest meal. That is why when you eat late at night the food can just ‘sit’ in your stomach. This applies to people with slow metabolism (what we call digestive capacity). Others can eat late at night, and not have problems, but it will catch up with them at some time in life. Exactly 12 hours later, from 10pm to 2am is when cells regenerate, this process will not occur effectively if your body has food to digest, as energy

will

go

to

digesting

and

not

to

regenerating. The latest time you should eat, unless exceeding hungry, is around 7pm depending on season (later in summer) but don’t over-do it. The earlier you eat the better chance you are

giving your body to

restore its health.

Secret #3 Correct Order Eat once the previous meal has been digested. Eating when the previous meal is still in your stomach is literally a recipe for disaster. The semi-digested product of the previous meal mixes with the new meal and automatically disturbs bodily functions. If you eat a couple of raisins after a meal it is not a problem. It is recommended not to take an entire meal within a short time of having another.

* Make sure your bowels and urinary bladder are clear before eating. This means if you need to go to the bathroom, do not wait until after your meal. And NEVER suppress urges to go the bathroom. This will only re-circulate toxins to other parts of the body. * Don’t eat before going to sleep – unless you are extremely hungry AND tired. * IF you need to take a bath, it is recommended to do it before eating. Secret #4 State of Health This is quite simple. If you are overactive do not take food or drinks that increase this state. For example, don’t take light, airy foods or coffee or other stimulants. Take heavier, but healthy foods. If you get angry easily or have high blood pressure, do not take spicy foods, these will just increase your blood pressure and make you more irritated. If you are lazy, sleepy or feel heavy, never take: heavy, oily, cold foods. Prefer lighter foods like salads, feel free to add spices, eat less and sleep normal hours. In Ayurveda this is called vata, pitta or kapha aggravation. Secret #5 Method of food preparation Food should be prepared with a natural ‘fuel’. Always prefer food that has been cooked on a gas stove, fire oven or natural log fire. It is better to avoid food that has been ‘zapped’, microwaved, freeze dried, flash processed and all the other artificial/hi-tech processing methods now used. This includes milk that has been homogenized. Secret # 6 Mental State and Concentration Sometimes we are afflicted with anger, fear, grief, sadness. These emotions put a dampener on our digestive fire and also on the efficiency of bodily functions. 5 Carabulife.com

7 secrets on healthy eating

Do not expect food to be nutritious if you eat when sad or stressed. Digestion is never perfect when we are afflicted with negative emotions. The healthiest piece of fruit can be potentially toxic when we eat under stress. The happier you are the more efficient digestion and will be. Eating a meal is a ritual and not a chore. Concentrate on what you are eating. Avoid eating in front of the TV. To improve mental state, sort out your problems or put them aside before you eat. Take at least 10 long deep diaphragmatic breaths, before eating to calm down. Food

Eat in a relaxed manner, sitting down and if possible with good company. If you are hungry for a long time and don’t eat it is usual for hunger to diminish because you did not eat when you were supposed to. bacteria but it definitely has lost most of its nutritional benefits, including its prana/chi (vital energy). Continually eating cold food from the fridge can also put a dampener on your gastric juices.

Learn to respect your body; you only have one for your entire lifetime. Provide your body with the food it needs to thrive. The best rewards will be physical and mental health.

Combinations Try not to mix fish with yogurt; this is a really bad combination. Meat with any dairy products is a bad combination – both foods are really heavy and combining them just puts more strain on your body to process them. For potential vegetarians/vegans: Never eat the meat of a diseased animal. This sounds obvious but do you know if the meat you are eating comes from what was a healthy animal that lived a healthy life.

This brochure is based on Ayurvedic principles. Ayurveda believes that indigestion is the root cause of all diseases. According to Ayurveda improper digestion results in ‘undigested residue’ due to incomplete processing of bodily wastes, which are essentially toxins. When not taken care of they can eventually spread all over the body.
