DA-Caraga Regional Executive Director Engr. Ricardo M. Oñate said the Abonong Swak campaign supports the agency’s Balanced Fertilization Strategy, highlighting the importance of combining organic and inorganic fertilizers to reduce production costs while ensuring a higher yield.

“This campaign aims to widen the utilization of both organic and inorganic fertilizers. With our goal to empower the farmers in addressing the rising fertilizer prices, its success is dependent on the support of the local government units (LGUs) and the farmers embracing the Abonong Swak recommendations,” he said. “ No matter how good is our strategy, without the support of our LGUs and the farmers themselves, it would be impossible to achieve its purpose, so we have to collaborate to attain the intended goal,” Director Oñate, Jr. added. According to Regie Bicamon, Senior Agriculturist at DA-Regional Soils Laboratory, the idea of Balanced Fertilization is a revival undertaking since this was introduced more than 20 years ago. She also explained the different recommended combinations of organic and inorganic fertilizers based on targeted production volume and

Following the Abonong Swak technology, farmers could save P2,000 to P4,000 a hectare,” she said. Enocensio B. The result will be a strong evidence to our farmers on the effectiveness of Abonong Swak,” he concluded. MinDA convenes ODA orgs

capable of defending and maintaining our sovereign state, and of assisting our people in times of dire consequences and today’s reality that this dictates. A more modern, aerial, and surveillance capability is all the more felt given the territorial disputes that we in the Philippines are involved in. This enhanced capability is also proven to be very critical in the Philippine military’s efforts to protect the nation from local communist insurgents and the extremist groups in the south. As our country is defined by more than 7,000 islands, several of which are located in active volcanic zones or in a pathway of some of the strongest typhoons ever recorded in history, natural disasters are certainties we all expect now to happen. Transport aircraft, helicopters and the like, are important facilities that only the Philippine Air Force can suitably and sufficiently provide, especially during
humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. All these are just some of the most fundamental and significant functions that we have come to expect from our Air Force.
PCOO holds handover ceremony as it welcomes new head
At this point, it is but proper that we honor, acknowledge, and appreciate the Philippine Air Force’s outstanding personnel and units for today is their day and deservingly so. Congratulations to all the awardees. All of you are worth our emulation, our respect, our admiration. You are what makes this 75th Year even more meaningful and essential than it already is. Thank you all to the officers and men and women of the Philippine Air Force. Mabuhay po kayong lahat! And I thank you once again to be part of the 75th celebration of the establishment of the Philippine Air Force. Magandang hapon na po sa inyong lahat. Marami pong salamat.

Filipinos should learn to live with Covid-19: DOH
(PNA photo by Jess Escaros Jr.)
Filipinos should learn to live with the coronavirus disease 2019 and transition to a new normal as the eradication of the virus is not feasible, a health official said Wednesday. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the public would have to rely on vaccines and continue to observe the health protocols to coexist with the virus while reducing the risk and protecting others. “Tinuturuan po natin ang ating mga kababayan na (We’re already teaching our

countrymen that) we should live with this virus, they must protect themselves by receiving our vaccines and also doing and complying with our safety protocols like wearing face masks,” she said. “Alam din po natin na pang matagalan po ang sakit na ito na hindi naman po talaga basta-basta mawawala (We also know that our battle against this disease [Covid-19] will take long and it won’t disappear easily).” She said the government would no longer impose strict lockdowns as it
used to at the height of the pandemic to prevent coronavirus transmission, even as the cases rise. Health experts said living with the virus is acknowledging that the eradication of SARSCoV-2 is not feasible and would get to a point that it is incorporated into other common viruses. Vergeire said about 63 more cases of three Omicron subvariants were logged in Western Visayas, National Capital Region, and among returning overseas Filipinos.

She added that it is expected that Filipinos will contract Covid-19 as cases are on the rise again due to mobility patterns, low vaccine uptick, especially for booster shots and compliance to minimum public health standards. “Basta mild and moderate lang at saka asymptomatic, tayo po ay makakaagapay dito. Ang pinakaimportante sa atin ngayon ay mai-manage natin at mamaintain natin ang ating mga ospital na hindi dumadami po ang mga nagkakasakit at naaadmit, ma-maintain po natin na mababa ang (As long as it’s mild and moderate only and asymptomatic, we can survive this. What’s important now is to manage and maintain our hospitals, that the cases admitted won’t increase and we maintain low) severe and critical [cases],” she said. As of June 28, DOH data show that more than half of the total hospital admissions are asymptomatic and mild cases of Covid-19 while
the severe and critical cases comprise at least 10.68 percent or 591 cases only -- lower than the 20 percent logged in January. No let-up Amid an uptick in Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Maj. Gen. Felipe Natividad reiterated his call to the public to strictly observe existing Covid-19 health protocols and guidelines to prevent another surge. This came as the NCRPO nabbed 1,920 persons and fined 409 others for violation of minimum health protocols. This reflects a trend of disregard for existing policies despite the pandemic lasting for over two years now, Natividad said. “We should have learned to live with this virus by now. These policies were in place to ensure that our communities are safe and our citizenry especially the children

and the elderly are protected. I urge everyone to re-instill your commitment and strengthen our unity against this deadly disease,” he said in a statement. From June 20 to June 26, the country has recorded a total of 4,364 new cases or an average of 662 cases daily, a 53 percent increase from the case figure from June 13 to 19. Around 591 of these cases were categorized as severe and resulted in a 14.9 percent intensive care unit bed utilization rate and 18.1 percent non-ICU bed utilization rate. “Let’s keep ourselves and our families reminded of our obligation to continuously observe minimum health and safety standards in place to protect us against this disease. To those who remain unvaccinated, the time is not yet up. Get vaccinated and boosted while there is enough time,” Natividad said. (with Lloyd Caliwan/PNA)

COVAX to deliver 17M more vax doses after PRRD admin
The rise in Covid-19 cases due to the emergence of variants of concern (VOC) will not determine the risk classification of an area.
The Philippines will receive at least 17 million more doses of coronavirus vaccines from the World Health Organization-led COVAX facility after the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term.
Dr. Rontgene Solante, Vaccine Expert Panel member, said it has always been the practice of health authorities to monitor health care utilization rate and cross tabulated it with average daily attack rates and thresholds. “With this current variants of concern, alam natin na napakataas ng hawaaan (we know that infections are really increasing) but we expect na less number ang ma-hospitalize at magdevelop ng severe (that there will be less number of hospitalized and those will develop a severe) infection,” he said during Tuesday’s “Laging Handa” public briefing. Solante emphasized that the government’s massive vaccination program helped in lowering hospitalization and mortality rates. The World Health Organization said four Omicron variants are classified as VOC as of June 9. Solante explained that a

rise in active cases in certain areas won’t always mean that the Alert Level system will escalate. “Titingnan natin ang health care utilization, titingnan natin ‘yung viability ng health care system. Kung hindi naman napupuno at kaya pa maski mataas ang kaso. Definitely we can do with that and we can continue with our activities,” Solante said. Metro Manila will remain under Alert Level 1 until July 15 after the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) updated the matrices to be used for the Alert Level System. The two-week growth rate will no longer determine the case risk classification, which will now be based on
average daily attack rates and current thresholds. However, the IATF retained the total bed utilization rate and its current thresholds as the main metric for health system capacity. The Department of Health recorded 4,976 new cases from June 21 to 27 as cases rose to 710 per day or 257 more than the previous week. “There’s nothing to worry about because we’re still at less than one case per 100,000 population for our average daily attack rate,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in an online media forum on Monday. Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., chief of the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF), bared the COVAX commitment Monday night when he welcomed 299,520 doses of Pfizer jabs at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 with United States Embassy Manila Chargé d’Affaires Heather Variava. The jabs were donated by the US government through COVAX and was the final vaccine delivery under the Duterte administration. “The COVAX Facility has committed to deliver 17 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, mostly US donations. They also promised to replace all expired jabs,” Galvez said in an interview. He thanked the US government as well as other partner nations for helping the Philippines ensure a steady supply of Covid-19 vaccines. The Philippines received a total of 245,382,600 doses under Duterte’s watch, with 35.6 million doses donated by the US government out of the 74.2 million from COVAX. The Philippines has so far

Through this strong partnership, we have made the seemingly impossible, possible,” Galvez said. Galvez hopes the Marcos administration will build on the US-Philippine partnership, especially in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic response. booster shots as well to strengthen immunity against the virus. “The United States, the Philippines, and COVAX have been working together for more than a year now to bring safe and effective vaccines to the Philippines and it’s great to be back here to have another delivery of vaccines,” she said. Variava thanked Galvez, Department of Health, InterAgency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the Duterte administration for showcasing a “great” bilateral partnership with the US government, especially in fighting the global health crisis. “We look forward to continuing that work with the incoming Marcos administration because Covid is still with us and we still need to fight,” she said.
