The Lipata Ferry Terminal in Surigao City got the much-coveted Safety Seal Certification for compliance and adherence with the minimum public health standards set forth by the government to contain the spread of COVID 19 and prevent future surges.

“It is an advantage for the coconut farmers in the region since soon we will have our own source of planting materials, unlike today, that we will source it out from other regions, so farmers can assure quality,” Oclarit added.

The Safety Seal was given recently by an inspectorate team composed of representatives from the Surigao del Norte Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) , Philippine National Police (PNP) Surigao City, and Surigao City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)

He also said that aside from being a coconut seed farm, the project will also serve as a research area for students and other interested stakeholders. Marco Antonio Morido, High-Value Crops Development Program Coordinator said that DA-Caraga will support the project through the provisions of planting materials to be intercropped with coconut and livestock animals, as well as monitor the progress of the project. Mobile lab for ASF detection to be deployed in Mindanao A mobile laboratory for the detection of the African swine fever (ASF) is currently being developed and will be deployed in Mindanao, an official of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said Wednesday.

MINDANAO NEWS

“The BioAssets Corporation is setting up a high containment laboratory unit that will be deployed in Mindanao. This laboratory will help veterinarians and farmers to have the diagnostics, so they could immediately respond to a disease outbreak,” DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevara said in a public briefing. This project of the BioAssets Corporation was funded by the DOST for PHP15.95 million. Guevara pointed out that detecting the ASF fast and having an accessible laboratory would lessen the number of pigs that would have to be killed. “At present, when you need to test a suspected ASF case, you would get a sample and bring it to a laboratory. We will do it the other way -- the laboratory will go to where there are suspected ASF cases,” she

said. “Alam naman natin ang mga patakaran ng Department of Agriculture (DA) tungkol dito sa ASF, kaya kung makaka-respond kaagad itong laboratory, mas mapapabilis ang aksiyon at mas kaunti na lang ang ating mga kailangang patayin na mga baboy (We know the DA’s rules with regard to ASF, so a mobile laboratory would hasten the response and would lessen the number of pigs to be killed),” she said. Guevara said she was referring to the DA’s rule that once ASF was detected, all the other pigs within a onekilometer distance should be culled. “If there will be a detection kit, there will be no need to kill all the other pigs. You could detect which

among them is infected,” she said. Guevara said there are currently two ASF detection kits. One is the ASFV Nanogold which is still being developed and needs to be registered. The other one was made by a DOSTattached agency. The latter is based on a real-time polymerase chain reaction or PCR, and could be used for certification, according to Guevara. The official said the ASF really made the public feel the increasing prices of pork. “This is why our scientists wanted to develop (an ASF) diagnostic kit, and they would also want to develop a vaccine against ASF,” she said. Reconciliation and Unity, on Wednesday. In a statement, Galvez said BARMM’s economy grew by 7.5 percent in 2021, a “remarkable” feat amid the pandemic, a testament of the region’s vast economic potential. “This is not only a testament of the region’s vast economic potential but also an indication

Reacting to journalist Raissa Robles’ Twitter post on June 2, Galvez said putting Mindanao in a bad light is “worrisome.” Galvez raised concerns after Robles questioned the preparedness of Mindanao areas to secure foreign tourists against the rebel Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG). Robles’ tweet came after incoming Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco laid down her plans to further open up Mindanao for foreign travelers. “We are not quite sure about Ms. Robles’ intentions but she is instilling fear among

local and foreign travelers who wish to visit Mindanao. By doing so, she is creating a negative image of the place in the public’s eye which I find worrisome,” Galvez said.

Galvez said the significant decline in violent incidents in the Sulu archipelago was noticeable following the heightened presence of military forces within communities.

surrendered and are now living peacefully with their families. They no longer have the influence over the communities, particularly in Basilan and TawiTawi,” he said.

Galvez said the negative views thrown by Robles about Mindanao as a whole must be “unfair” to the current and previous administrations, local government units (LGUs), and the security sector that “have been working very hard to put an end to Mindanao conflict” for years.

“Particularly through the military brigades and battalions that have been strategically deployed in the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi,” he added.

During his stint as an active military member, Galvez said he personally saw and felt the determination of LGUs and their communities to get rid of lawless elements, address the roots of armed violence, and bring genuine peace and sustainable development within their localities.

The same stakeholders were “tireless and relentless” in improving the overall peace and order situation in Mindanao, he added. “Ms. Robles claims that she has been covering terrorism in Mindanao for the longest time. If this is the case, then she must know that the attacks perpetrated by terror groups have significantly gone down during the term of President [Rodrigo] Duterte,” Galvez said. Decline in violent incidents

“As the former commander of the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), we focused on addressing the threat posed by the ASG and other terror groups by making our presence felt and working closely with LGUs to ensure peace and security in their areas,” Galvez said. The efforts resulted in many ASG members returning to the folds of the law and now embracing a peaceful life. “The numbers of the ASG are dwindling. Hundreds have already

“Having previously worked closely with local chief executives and other community leaders for many years, I could really sense their commitment and desire to present their areas in a better, more positive light. There was even a catchphrase: from terrorism to tourism,” he added. Galvez said Robles could be trying to implore images of the “wild, wild west” when describing Mindanao, but in reality, “this island region is now

PCOO’s ‘The Virtual Presser’ bags Philippine Quill Award With less than a month remaining, the Presidential Communications Operations Office clinched another recognition for its innovation in delivering information to the public and in engaging with local and international media partners.

“It is an innovation ahead of its time. This program has been pivotal most especially during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when the conduct of face-toface press conferences and briefings were not allowed,” Assistant Secretary for Global Media and Public Affairs JV Arcena said.

This time, “The Virtual Presser” bagged an award in the Communications Management Division – Media Relations category at the 19th Philippine Quill Awards. “This award recognizes our efforts in innovating our program not just for the Filipino people, but also for our media partners in the country and across the globe. No Covid-19 surge due to non-stop vaccination: Galvez

DOH eyes inclusion of Covid vaccination in public health programs

The Philippines keeping coronavirus cases low and not recording a surge for months is a “major accomplishment” and a result of the government’s continuous vaccination activities nationwide, said Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 chief implementer.

The Department of Health (DOH) plans to institutionalize the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination program into its regular programs for public health.

Latest data as of June 8 from the National Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC) showed that the Philippines has fully vaccinated 71,090,091 Filipinos with primary Covid-19 doses. About 14,355,799 eligible individuals received a third dose or first booster shot. “There has been no surge in infections recorded recently because of the continuous vaccination being carried out by local government units nationwide,” Galvez said in a recent interview. “This is a major accomplishment considering that there have been a lot of superspreader events in the past months, which include the national elections, Ramadan, Holy Week, the resumption of on-site work reporting, and the further easing of restrictions.” The Philippines only recorded 2,437 active Covid-19 cases

as of Wednesday. “These positive developments will help more Filipinos bounce back from the health crisis, and enable the next administration to sustain and build on these gains,” Galvez said. The government has earlier targeted fully vaccinating at least 70 million Filipinos to achieve the country’s population protection against Covid-19, as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). “Ang WHO po ay ay talagang tuwang-tuwa din dahil (The WHO is also happy because) there are only few countries who have accomplished ‘yung 70 million fully-vaccinated people. And isa po ang Pilipinas na sinasabi nilang

napakaganda ng pagarangkada sa vaccination (And they said the Philippines is one of the countries that have a good vaccination drive),” Galvez said. Galvez said the current Covid-19 situation in the country will help more Filipinos to bounce back into normalcy. “We were able to save more lives without compromising our economy. We are now on the road towards full recovery,” he added. “We are confident that the incoming administration will build upon these developments, sustain the government’s vaccination efforts, and effectively lead the nation to the new normal.” (PNA/Lade Jean Kabagani)

In an online media forum Tuesday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said they want the inoculation program against Covid-19 to be part of the routine work of the local governments or the local health units. “Kaya ‘yong mga malakihang bakunahan ay hindi na po natin masyadong ginagamit sa ngayon, binaba na po natin sa mga community ang ating vaccination centers. Mas malapit po ito sa ating mga komunidad, mas malapit sa mga tao, mas accessible sa kanila, mas magpapabakuna sila (We’re no longer using the large-scale vaccination centers now because we brought to the community the vaccination centers. When it’s closer to the community, it’s closer to the people, it’s more accessible to them, they’re more likely to get vaccinated),” she said.

About 14.3 million have received their first booster shot while 426,000 have been vaccinated with their second booster shot.
