SPIS uses solar energy for water pumping, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from irrigated agriculture. Aside from its capacity to irrigate the farms, the technology is aligned with the DA’s undertaking on climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.

Dr. Clemencia L. Sumagaysay, NEMSU Campus Director expressed her gratitude to the DA-Caraga for realizing their dream.

“The establishment of the SPIS on the campus fulfills the institution’s mandate for Instruction, Research, Extension, and Production,” Sumagaysay stated. “Aside from being a show window to the students, the facility will enhance food security and income among farmers,” Sumagaysay added.

The turn-over ceremony was led by DA-Caraga Regional Executive Director Ricardo M. Oñate, Jr., together with DA-Agricultural Program Coordinating Office (APCO) – SDS Chief June Anthony S. Ouano, RAED Chief Engr. Rene Morales, and Rice Program Coordinator Marisa Garces.

All interventions of the DA-Caraga are in partnership and coordination with the Province of Surigao del Sur through the Provincial Agriculture Office headed by Provincial Agriculturist Marcos Quico. (DACaraga/PIA-Surigaso del Sur)
