New Beginnings

ho said life in motorised lifestyle media was boring? Never mind the fact that we test and feature the fastest cars, the wildest dirt & superbikes and the most stylish in marine craft. This time the excitement has come from the fact that, niche market magazine group, Media in Africa, has acquired a majority share of Xtreme Car & Leisure Magazine.
ing company, adding a wealth of experience and stability to the magazine. Our title is now eight years old, and as you know, we are a title that has a dedicated and varied readership all held together by one very strong central theme: You guys and girls mostly make a purchasing decision based on the ‘I want it, because I want it’ philosophy and are not ‘transport for the sake of transport’ kind of people.
The Media in Africa group began its foray in the publishing industry more than a quarter of a century ago in 1983. Since then they have grown to become a leading dynamic publishing group who put product quality and customer satisfaction above all else. This acquisition also means that we will have the backing and expertise of an established niche magazine publish-
Issues like fuel consumption and budget beating value for money is not at the top of your purchase list criteria as you rate the emotional appeal, performance and status that your purchase can give you as most important. This new chapter in our titles lifespan is best summed up by Liezel van der Merwe, MIA Director, when she adds, “It’s especially this niche that attract-
ed our attention to the Xtreme Car & Leisure title, as it’s here that we see massive potential. One title that caters to the entire spectrum of motorised lifestyle products is a very exciting concept, as it’s a motorised lifestyle magazine featuring the latest, greatest, and fun lifestyle vehicles spanning across the motoring, marine and motorcycling spectrums. We have big plans for the Xtreme Car & Leisure title in terms of target distribution, product quality, and innovative new concepts and we look forward to an exciting new era for Media in Africa and the Xtreme Car & Leisure title.”

MOTORING Born On The Track To Live On The Street
T
wenty five years ago BMW created an icon when it debuted the very first BMW M3 at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show. The BMW M3 created a legacy of driver involvement, sublime handling and giant-killing performance that has passed to each of the car’s four generations. South African buyers never experienced that first BMW M3 as it was only built in left-hand drive and the first BMW M3 to reach these shores was the 6 cylinder E36 M3 Coupe of the early 1990s. So, to meet demand for a sport BMW 3 Series in the late Eighties, BMW South Africa’s engineers at Plant Rosslyn produced two very special BMW 3 Series for South Africa only. The first was the Alpina-based BMW 333i, which shoehorned a 145 kW 3.2-litre inline six cylinder engine into the two-door BMW 3 Series saloon in 1985. Then, in the late 1980s, the Rosslyn engineers created the BMW 325iS. Initially this was merely a two-door 325i saloon fitted with a bodykit and a close-ratio gearbox which improved acceleration at the expense of top speed and economy. But more changes were made to keep the car competitive in South African saloon car racing culminating in the 325iS Evo II of late 1991. By now several body panels were made of aluminum and the engine capacity grew to 2.7 litres, produced 155 kW and the car achieved a 0-100 km/h dash in a mere 7.5 seconds. Now, to celebrate 25 years of the BMW M3, BMW South Africa’s engineers are at it again and will produce a very special version of the current V8-engined BMW M3 Coupe in celebra-

Each car will also feature the the M Dual Clutch Transmission as part of the standard specification. Featuring

an AC Schnitzer exhaust pipe, intake manifold and a revised engine management system, all covered under the standard BMW Motorplan and Warranty, the Frozen Edition BMW M3 Coupe will now produce 330 kW at 8 400 rpm and 420 Nm of torque at 3 900 rpm. The BMW M3 Frozen Edition will be priced at R1 180 000.
Renault Sandero Steps up in 2010
S
et to launch in November, Sandero Stepway is poised to take up the mantle of flagship model of Renault South Africa’s Sandero line-up and further enhance its robust range.
A big-size car with a small-size price tag, within just 17 months, Sandero has become a top seller and Renault is confident that its introduction of Stepway will further boost its growth in
South Africa. The locally manufactured Sandero Stepway is due to go on sale in South Africa in November 2010.
As the only cross-over model in the AB entry level segment, Stepway’s offering to consumers is innovative and unique and Renault is confident that the newcomer will prove a serious contender in this highly contested passenger car segment. Stepway boasts best-in-class interior space and value for money. A full 20 mm higher than current Sandero models, a host of styling cues sets it apart from its peers. These include satin and chrome trim, front fog lights and black bushplate headlamps - all of which combine to give Sandero Stepway an SUV-look that simply shouts stylish ruggedness. Like its Renault Sandero siblings, Stepway will be manufactured at Alliance partner Nissan South Africa’s Rosslyn production plant.
Mini Set To Join World Rally Championship From 2011.

INI is making a comeback on the international rally circuit. From 2011, the brand will compete at selected rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and will go on to contest the entire season from 2012 onwards. The car charged with this task is the MINI Countryman WRC, which is being developed by Prodrive, in close cooperation with MINI, and is based on the production model. The powerful heart of the racing car is a 1.6 litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine from BMW Motorsport. The car complies with the new Super2000 regulations put in place by the FIA. This decision sees MINI continue its success story in the world of rallying. In the 1960s, the MINI Cooper S caused a sensation with victories at the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. The company also tasted success on many occasions in the European Rally Championship. The MINI Countryman provides an excellent basis, from which to create a competitive racing car for the world championship. During the 1960s MINI captured the imagination of the
world when the tiny car took on the might of V8 powered Fords and won what was then one of the toughest motorsport events, the 4000km Monte Carlo rally. The new MINI will surely become a firm favourite of the latest generation of rally fans, just as it is adored by its millions of owners across the world. Prodrive has been working on developing the MINI Countryman WRC since early 2009. From 2011, over 40 years down the line, the MINI Countryman WRC will be charged with adding further chapters to this success story. It bridges the gap between the classic MINI concept and a contemporary Sports Activity Vehicle. The brand’s first model to feature four doors and a wide-opening tailgate, it offers more space – which can be used in a wide variety of ways – to go with its raised seating position and optimised ride comfort. Plus, the “go-kart” feeling for which MINI is a byword has been preserved and takes on a new dimension with the optional MINI ALL4 all-wheel-drive system.
P Zero Trofeo – The Track Is Your Road
P
irelli with over a hundred years of motorsport experience, adds to that satisfaction with the new P Zero Trofeo, a tyre designed mainly for the racetrack on powerful road cars. P Zero Trofeo is an innovative, ultra-low profile road tyre for racetrack driving on dry surfaces, enhancing the experience, transmitting safety and reacts with precision on command. The tyre is however also road legal, thanks to an asymmetrical tread design, with two wide central ribs and large regular blocks, the inner area with greater groove density, the outer area with a pattern derived from asphalt rally applications. The result is a inner area that responds to the demands of wet surfaces and aquaplaning. Imposing ribs in the centre guide the trajectories and withstand the structural stresses on braking, the transversal cuts ensure traction. For the compound, Pirelli developed new formulas, in order to maintain high performance over longer periods in the presence of very high thermal stresses, without penalizing handling on wet surfaces

Fiat Bravo Sport
T
he Fiat Bravo Sport one of the most underrated hatch backs in South Africa, has just undergone a very subtle facelift. There is a new grille up front which is finished in burnished metallic along with the headlights that are now smoked and the indicators that are clear. And if you thought the outside upgrade was subtle, then you need to pay attention now because inside all you get is reworked door panels that feature reflectors and a head rest for the rear middle passenger. But remaining are the
carbon fibre bits, sporty facia and comfy sports seats. Now contrary to what you might think, this minimalistic approach is not a bad thing, because the Bravo Sport retains the very good 110 Kw 1.4 litre T-Jet engine. Turning the key and charging around the Magaliesburg was a real treat, especially when you keep the overboost ‘sport’ button on permanently. Besides making you smile, this button also allows 230 Nm of torque at 3 000 rpm (as op-
posed to 206 Nm at 2 000 rpm), which if you add the already mentioned impressive power rating, you have a exceptionally well priced, full house hatch going to 100 km/h in a claimed 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 212 km/h. This car comes in at only R239 900, which is actually some R15 000 cheaper than it cost before the facelift. It has a full house of luxury and spec and a three year / 100 000 km warranty and a five year / 90 000 km service plan as standard.

Overall output of the parallel system is comparable with that of a conventional 1.8-litre petrol engine, offering 91 kW of maximum power at 6 100 rpm, and 174 Nm of torque, already available from 1 000 rpm. The dashing coupé is said to complete the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 10 seconds and achieves a top speed of 200 km/h.
onda has taken the global motoring arena by storm with the launch of the world’s first hybrid sports coupé: the arresting CR-Z. And despite huge international demand, the CR-Z is now available in South Africa. The CR-Z uniquely links the environmental advantages of a clean and efficient hybrid drivetrain and the sporty appeal of a six speed manual gearbox to a striking, streamlined 2+2 design.

The CR-Z’s eco-friendly credentials are borne out by its fuel efficiency and low emissions. The coupé is credited with a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of only 5.0 litres / 100 km, while the CO2 emissions rating stands at 117 g/km – below the impending 120 g/km emissions tax threshold, due for introduction in SA in September this year. The Honda CR-Z has a recommended retail price of R299 900 and will be available from Honda’s national network of franchised dealers. It is supported by a three year / 100 000 km warranty, and a five year / 90 000 km service plan. Service intervals are every 15 000 km.

he current Toyota Corolla has been around three years and it had come time to freshen the car up a bit. The Corolla has not been SAs top selling sedan for the past 26 years for nothing; it is seriously good at getting you from A-B in a relaxed to brisk fashion at best. The two models we drove in the form of the existing 1.6 litre that makes 90 kW / 154 Nm and the new 2.0 litre that produces 102 kW / 189 Nm have the numbers on paper and against the competition, but are horribly let down in any fast paced environment by their old school four speed auto boxes. What has actually changed on the car includes a new headlamp design, squared off front bumper, longer fog light bezels and a bolder front grille up front. Moving past the new alloy wheels and side mirrors with integrated turn signals to the back,
Toyota Corolla you get new, wider rear tail lights with chrome detailing and a wide chrome number plate garnish. Inside it is Toyota class and functionality as per usual, and for me this car certainly has one of the more modern less boring facias and instrumentation packages in the segment. It has gone up a step too in my books with a new thicker, flat bottomed sports steering wheel and the Optitron instrumentation panel now featuring a new white illumination.
The new Euro 5 compliant MultiAir 1.4 litre engine will initially be available in two turbocharged forms for the South African market. The 1.4 Ecotec is lighter and more fuel-efficient. It features variable valve timing and port de-activation technology to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption out on the road. A new oil pump also contributes to the lower fuel consumption of this engine as it now gives optimised oil pressure and reduced friction.
Opel’s new engines offer substantial improvements in performance whilst at the same time reducing CO2 emissions with a new figure of 129 grams / kilometre, which is an improvement of 13 percent on the previous engine. Fuel consumption is now claimed to be 5.5 litres / 100 km down from 5.8.

priorities: the pace and performance feel of the previous RS, but with even more power and greater stability; durable circuit performance, but with greater comfort for everyday driving. From NVH to design, powertrain to safety, Ford specialists from across the engineering spectrum were involved with Focus RS, needing to understand quickly its requirements and attributes and the differences in philosophy between the ‘ST’ and ‘RS’ brands. To illustrate the fundamental differences of approach between an ST and an RS; While both models are highly developed for their roles they both have unique characteristics – ST is a balance of performance and refinement, but do not fit the attributes designers set for RS and vice versa. The Focus RS was designed to fulfill the promise of being the ultimate production Focus. In keeping with its heritage, RS is an even more performance-oriented vehicle than ST, developed in every detail with on-track performance of equal importance to on-road behaviour. An exhaustive set of individual criteria was created for every aspect of the car’s performance, dynamics and durability, a process similar in scope to that required for a whole new carline. “South Africans never had the opportunity to drive the previous model, we are therefore extremely excited to bring the new Focus RS to local shores,” continues Pillay. “There will be a very limited run of the hallowed car making it all the more exciting.” The Ford RS retails for R479 000 and comes with a five year / 90 000 km Service Plan and a comprehensive four year / 120 000 km warranty with service intervals of 15 000 km. 60 of these models made their way to South Africa, but have all been sold.

Launched Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Gullwing Flyer There is no easy way to say this, but Mercedes-Benz AMG cars and race track launches have always been a bit of an oxymoron for me. The cars go like hell in straight line, but they were never going to win a track shoot out against the likes of BMW’s M or Audi’s RS cars. Kinda like back in the day when as National Servicemen we used to think that it was the same with the term military intelligence.
T
he irony is that I still know one of two relics from this military intelligence era and they still proudly fly the moron flag, so some things it seems will
never change, but I can tell you that this is not the case in AMG land. The new SLS AMG has just comprehensively rewritten this rule and the boys at M and RS Head Office better take note! Lap times of under two minutes and in fact closer to one minute fifty with a skilled driver on board were bandied about at the car’s Kyalami Race Track launch. This is fast in anybody’s language for a street car running on street rubber with a MobiloDrive 120 maintenance plan attached. And not to be out done in a straight line either, the SLS AMG sprints to 100 km/h in only 3.95 seconds, crosses the ¼ mile mark in 11.97 seconds at 193.76 km/h, while running through the 1km board at 247.08 km/h on the way to a heady top speed of 314.69 km/h. Now that is fast too! As most of you know, I never really get into styling as it is such a subjective subject, but even though the team at Merc were at pains to tell us that this car is not the successor to the legendary SL300 Gullwing of the 50’s, you would have to be blind not to see the stunning similarities. More importantly though is the fact that this AMG is not based on any other car in the Mercedes-Benz stable. It has been completely built up new from the ground, and it shows. Featuring a bare aluminium spaceframe body that weighs a mere 241 kilograms, and a seriously grumpy 420 kW and 650 Nm naturally aspirated 6.3 litre V8 connected together with an aluminium sports suspension for a complete package that comes in at a mere 1 620 kilograms. As the planning of the day would have it, I got to take to the road first in this super sports car, and was determined to make proper and civilised road use of the smooth seven speed double clutch gearbox in order to actually explore the everyday side of this car. First it has to be said, getting in and out of this car is no dignified affair. I am sure the international paparazzi have already sent the collection tin around so they can get the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton one, in order to can sell the resultant pictures for millions. But seriously, the seats are low down in the body like they should be and you well and truly climb in and out of the SLS AMG. This worked for me in terms of maintaining that purist sports car feel, and when you add to this the top class two-seater interior, you have a car

that will cause your spine to tingle in anticipation of what is to come. Punch the start button and the best sounding V8 in the business blasts into life, and now your levels of anticipation go up to a whole new level. Out on the road, the car is firm and there is a fair amount of tyre noise, from the big 19 inch and 20 inch wheels that run on the front and rear respectively, which gets into the snug cabin. But this is not a large family sedan, this is a super sports car to enjoy, and enjoy it you will based on how quick this car covers tar when provoked. Even the gullwing doors, which sit just out of reach of all but the tallest of drivers, can’t dampen ones enthusiasm. This is one car that will be forgiven mostly anything when you prod the accelerator. With the road and sanity behind us, it was time to unleash the SLS around the track and see exactly what all the engineering and power hype would reveal in a true acid test of the cars handling and ability. Put the multistage traction control in ‘Sport’ mode and turn the engine control dial to ‘M’ for Manual and blast out onto the circuit at a pace

Ingolstadt’s Best Audi are pretty well known for doing things right, and not only from a ‘bringing cool and trendy cars to the market’ point of view either. Because on a recent trip to Berlin where we got drive just such car in the new Audi A1, we also had a number of hours to kill between airports.
S
o rather than die a slow an painful death in the business class lounge, we were given the chance to grab a few exciting new Audi model deriva-
tives that will reach us in October this year to go and play with. First and top of everybody’s list was the monster RS 5, then the face lifted TT and finally a Q7 that will get here with the 3.0 supercharged S4 / S5 engine, but the one you all want to know about is the stunning RS 5. As far as looks go, I doubt there is a better looking coupe in the world. If this were a styling bun fight, the M3 and C63 AMG would not even get on the stage. But to rule the road, you need more than just looks. Taking care of this next part of the equation is a high revving 4.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 that pushes out 331 kW at a heady 8 250 rpm and 430 Nm of the best sounding torque you are going to hear for a long time to come between 4 000 and 6 000 rpm. On paper and I am sure in the real world it will have the beating of the already mentioned M and 63 in a straight line.

Launched Nissan 370Z Roadster
Blowing The Top Off The Z range of cars have always been great cars to drive and now the 370Z Roadster adds all the fun and exhilaration of an open top without compromising the awesome dynamic performance of the 370Z Coupe.
T
he dramatic 370Z Roadster, designed from the start as a convertible, is ready to join the awesome GT-R and thrilling 370Z Coupe to complete Nis-
san’s sports car offering. As a result of the car being designed from the ground up as a roadster it is notably stiffer than its predecessor to guarantee there has been no compromise in terms of the dynamic performance, which is the area which matters most in a sports car. High levels of handling and overall refinement are among the benefits of a more rigid body structure. Hydraulic speed sensitive rack and pinion steering have also been revised to provide more communicative feedback and better response around the dead ahead position. The system is said to deliver greater agility around town and enhanced stability at motorway speeds, it does however get a bit twitchy at high speeds when hurtling down bumpy roads. Braking performance has been enhanced with larger diameter ventilated discs front and rear and the adoption of a variable ratio brake pedal which is said to provide more movement for easier control at low speeds, but a firmer pedal at higher G forces. Lowering or raising the roof takes a mere 20 seconds with one push of a button and no fiddly latches to open or close. As in the Coupe, the Roadster is powered by the 3.7 litre V6 engine developing 245 kW thanks to Variable Valve Event Lift (VVEL) technology. Power is up by five percent while torque rises to 363 Nm. The Roadster is available with a choice of two transmissions, a seven speed automatic and the six speed manual with Synchro Rev Control, still the only manual transmission in the
ness to minimise the effects of camber change.

Much of the IS-F development took place at racetracks around the world, including the Nurburgring Nordeschleife, Paul Ricard and of course Fuji Speedway. Although it uses the basic double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear set up of the IS platform, the IS-F has a number of track proven modifications. It is 25 mm lower and spring and damper rates are increased, while larger diameter stabilizer bars are used. Rear control arms are also specific to the IS-F
The Lexus IS-F is an extremely fun car to drive, firstly it is simple with no need to turn a number of knobs to get full power, one has all the power, all the time. There is a sport button but this only controls the VDIM and when pressed allows higher dynamic thresholds before intervening. Secondly it is undoubtedly very user friendly and can be used to potter around town very comfortable, but when one needs to it is transformed into a track attacking monster simply by putting the gearbox into the manual mode. Sporty SAV BMW say, “This new compact BMW X model is the first premium Sports Activity Vehicle of its kind and offers, at the same time, a new interpretation of BMW Sheer Driving Pleasure.” But if you are completely blunt, you will quickly realise that all the new X1 is, is a replacement for the old X3 that is also due to get bigger and more expensive later this year.

Dimension wise the X1 is said to be smaller than the X3, and I am sure it is, but you would need to take your ruler out to measure exactly where this might be the case. But that is where it ends with the comparison to the X3; the looks of the new car are sharp and fresh and like it a lot. I would go so far as to say that if I was shopping for a new family vehicle and the 3 Series or anything else in this segment was on my list, I would opt for the X1 before them, mostly because it is new and different. Inside the car, it is familiar E90 luxury territory with a healthy dose of space thrown in for good measure. You get three full sized seats in the rear and a three piece rear-seat backrest that increases luggage capacity from 420 to 1 350.
Not so impressive is the fuel consumption though, expect around 9.0 litres / 100 km (claimed is 6.6 litres) when driving normally, and even higher than this if you make full use of the power and torque available. Obviously

The Range Rover has been at the forefront of technology, luxury and 4x4 ability since its inception, we take a look back as they celebrate their 40th birthday.

T
he Range Rover celebrated its 40th birthday on 17 June, 2010. One of the most significant vehicles in the history of motoring, the Range Rover
was the world’s first vehicle as good on-road as off-road. It was the first fully capable luxury 4x4 and was a milestone in the development of the SUV. There have been three generations of Range Rover. The original, now known as the Classic, went on sale in 1970 and continued in production, with numerous upgrades and a multiplicity of variants, for just over 25 years. The second-generation vehicle, known as the P38a, went on sale in 1994 and was replaced in 2001 by the current model. The continuing success of the Range Rover ensured that other premium makers jumped into the booming luxury SUV market. The latest version has enjoyed higher annual sales than any previous models and continues to be popular around the world. “The Range Rover is really four vehicles in one,” says managing director Phil Popham. “It’s a seven days a week luxury motor car; a leisure vehicle that will range far and wide on the highways of the world, a high performance car for long distance travel and a working cross-country vehicle.” The Range Rover could do all these things. No other car in the world could even get

sales brochure spoke about ‘the most versatile motor car in the world’, and the ‘interfusing of Rover car comfort with Land Rover strength and four-wheel drive mobility’. The Range Rover went on to be the world’s first luxury all-terrain vehicle. But, although that first Range Rover had a luxury car ride and premium saloon performance, it certainly did not have the trimmings of a luxury car. That came quite a few years later. The first Range Rover was a relatively spartan vehicle inside, with vinyl seat trim and vinyl and moulded rubber flooring to make it easy to hose out. There was no wood, or leather, or even carpet. “It certainly wasn’t a luxury ve-
Among the new features were the stiffer monocoque body, replacing the traditional 4x4 ladder frame and the fully independent suspension with interconnected air springs. The interior was also widely lauded as the finest of any car cabin. The shape of a Range Rover is instantly recognisable. “You can describe a Range Rover with three or four lines on a piece of paper,” says former design director Geoff Upex, responsible for the current model. “A child could draw the basic shape, so it’s instantly recognisable in the same way as a Porsche 911 or Volkswagen Beetle.

The Land Rover, of course, had aluminium
It had special pale blue metallic paintwork, a
bodywork, one of the reasons for this wasy because there was more aluminium available than steel in post-war Britain, when the first Land Rover was conceived. Most of it was leftover from the wartime aircraft industry. This tradition has been continued untill today. The 2010 Range Rover featured revolutionary TFT (thin film transistor) instruments. It was the most thorough automotive application yet of this new technology. This instrumentation improved clarity and versatility. For instance, major warning signs can momentarily replace dials, satellite navigation instructions can temporarily supplant a less important display when approaching a crucial junction. At the same time, the Range Rover became the first car with a ‘dual-view’ centre screen, which allows driver and passenger to watch the same screen but see different images. The driver can be checking satellite navigation instructions while the passenger can be watching a DVD, depending on the angle at which the screen is viewed. Like its little brother, the Land Rover, the Range Rover was soon crossing deserts, climbing mountains, wading rivers and traversing swamps. That luxury touch in no way diminished the car’s adventurous spirit. The Range Rover has also cut its teeth in the demanding world of motorsport. A specially modified Range Rover won the first Paris-Dakar rally in 1979 driven by Frenchmen Alain Génestier and Joseph Terbiaut. A Range Rover won again in 1981 and were used for the 1981, 1982 and 1987 events. The vehicles were heavily modified with roll-over cages, stronger under-body protection, winches, engine snorkels (which, in the diesel engine’s case, allowed the vehicle to run when submerged) and navigation and communication equipment.
more luxurious interior including wooden trim and full carpeting, air conditioning and a picnic hamper. The ‘In Vogue’ set the marker for the car’s move upmarket, which was subsequently cemented by the production Vogue model which became the most luxurious Range Rover in many markets. Two specially modified Range Rovers were built for Pope John Paul II during his six-day visit to the UK in 1982. The pope rode in a special rear display area protected by bullet-proof glass. The limited edition CSK was named after Range Rover founder Charles Spencer King. It was the first new two-door Range Rover in several years, yet its significance went well beyond that. The CSK, launched in 1990, was a sportier Range Rover. Just as the ‘In Vogue’ began the route down the luxury path, so the CSK opened the door to a new sportier future, as epitomised 15 years later by the Range Rover Sport. The Vogue was a move upmarket for Range Rover. But the limited edition Linley – just 10 were made – was on another plane altogether: Inspired by furniture designer Lord Linley, the 1999 Range Rover Linley featured lustrous allblack paintwork. Inside, all the trim was in black leather and the woodwork was piano black ebony veneer. It was the first Range Rover to feature satellite navigation; it also had a TV. The Range Rover has long been a popular car with politicians and leading industrialists. It has served as official transport for many heads of state, including British prime ministers. The latest model was officially developed, by Land Rover Special Vehicles, into an armoured vehicle. The ‘official’ armoured vehicle, first launched in 2007, is certified for European B6 ballistic protection. I have no doubt that the Range Rover lineup is going to continue setting the benchmark for

Not much larger in diameter than a broomstick and between 25 and 33 cm long (depending on model), the Fire Stryker uses a blast of potassium nitrate to effectively kill a fire in one easy step. Potassium oxidizes rapidly in air so when the seal on the Fire Stryker is broken and it releases its contents, it devours the oxygen in the immediate vicinity and in so doing deprives the fire of the
oxygen necessary for it to burn. The 8B model has an emission time of 50 seconds yet weighs only 275 grams while the flagship 13B model lasts for close to 100 seconds and the compact and ultra lightweight 5B model will last for 25, often critical, seconds. Using Fire Stryker is as quick and easy as striking an oversized match: while holding the plastic handle simply pull off the protective cap, remove the ‘striker’ from the other end and strike it against the front of the tube to start ignition. With a five year warranty and approval from the South African Maritime Safety Authority, ATS is confident that the Fire Stryker is the answer when a portable, practical and light fire-fighting solution is needed. The vessel’s unique trimaran hull form combines the softer roll of monohulls with the low resistance, stability and carrying capacity of catamarans to deliver proven advantages over conventional designs. These advantages include greater speed for the same installed power, an ability to operate in higher wave heights and maintain higher speeds in waves, greater resistance to damage and reduced wake which reduces impact on the environment. The Future Of The Ferry y incorporating lessons learnt from the Austal’s inaugural 2005 trimaran “Benchijigua Express” and the Austal designed and built Littoral Combat Ship “USS Independence”, the company’s latest trimaran delivers innovation without risk. Austal undertook a detailed market study on the commercial ferry industry looking at the size and capacity of existing fleets. Based on the data collected from this study, it was determined that 102 metres, 1 165 passengers and 254 cars were the approximate specifications most applicable to the existing market.

portantly, the trimaran’s lower roll speed means lower accelerations experienced by passengers, significantly reducing passenger seasickness. Studies show that motion sickness on the trimaran will be approximately 56 percent lower than on a 100 metre catamaran operating in head seas. Because the vessel was being built on speculation, the design of the vessel’s interior and vehicle deck has been pitched at a level that permits the eventual owner to easily modify the vessel to suit their particular market. So if you’ve always wanted to enjoy an ocean cruise but could never get over the seasickness, the new trimaran hulls may be just what you were waiting for.
ärtsilä and ABB Turbo Systems are developing a new application of two-stage turbocharging on large diesel engines. Advanced engine technology, together with two-stage turbocharging, offers advantages in fuel consumption and engine emissions. In the new engine design, two turbochargers are arranged in series to generate increased air pressure and airflow. This results in an efficiency rating of up to 76 percent. The increased air pressure, combined with the advanced engine technology, improves the engine output and power density by up to 10 percent and allows to reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Further emission reduction can be achieved with additional engine systems or by the use of exhaust gas after-treatment. A precise combination of fuel consumption levels and reductions in CO2 and NOx emissions can be selected through detailed systems configuration. Intelligent engine control allows optimum operation of the advanced engine design over the whole load range, and a significant reduction in NOx emissions can be reached. Emissions control plays an increasingly important role today, and in particular reducing CO2 and NOx levels is high on the agenda. Today, the market is demanding environmentally sound solutions with competitive lifetime costs. This need continues to pave the way for the introduction of new technologies developed with environmental impact at its core.

outstanding fuel efficiency that will help boaters significantly reduce fuel costs. And to summon that wave splitting performance you crave, Suzuki engineers have drawn on their unrivalled experience in both the motorcycle and automobile worlds to create the all-new three cylinder engine that incorporates DOHC and four valves per cylinder. Effective use of Suzuki’s advanced technologies plays an important role in providing the DF60 with the power needed to battle your way through the surf. But perhaps the most impressive feature of the new DF60 is its lightweight and compact design. Suzuki engineers worked around the clock to come up with ways to reduce weight on their outboard motors and the fruits of their labours can be seen in the DF60. The new DF60’s dry weight is a whopping 42 percent less than the current model, weighing in at just 104 kilograms. To accomplish this each component part was designed individually from the ground up, with Suzuki’s wealth of experience once again aiding them on the technical side. The end result of this is an outboard motor that boasts the lightest weight in its class, and we all know less weight equals increased performance. Another great feature on the new DF60 is Suzuki’s self-adjusting, maintenance free timing chain, the first time this advanced feature has ever been offered in the 60 hp category. The timing chain is oil-bathed and features an automatic hydraulic tensioner that keeps the chain properly adjusted at all times for maintenance free operation. The DF60 also features Suzuki’s Easy Start System which starts the motor with a single quick turn of the key. The starter stays engaged until the motor is operating, this also helps prevent the owner from turning the key to engage the motor when it is already running, an aspect that has been an issue with Suzuki motors because they run so quietly. Feature Sodwana
This Is Paradise There are few things better than breaking away from the office for a week or so and heading down to the coast. And that’s exactly what we got to do last month, together with Yamaha and Toyota.
T
here were several reasons behind our trip. One, to complete the practical part of a sea skippers course with Yamaha. And two, to test out the pow-
er and fury of one of the newest Toyota Land Cruisers, while it’s in its element. So, where is the perfect place to do these things you may be wondering? Well, in our humble opinion there are few places left in the country as beautiful and still untamed as the North Coast’s Sodwana. Located close to the border with Mozambique the area is filled with lush semi-tropical vegetation, spotless beaches, and most importantly, a pristine section of ocean to play around in. So first things first, getting there. Sodwana is about 500 km’s from Pretoria in a straight line, but don’t let that fool you, you aren’t going to make the drive in five hours. Initially we were blessed with some good highway but as you move farther away from the hustle and bustle that is Gauteng, the roads start deteriorating quite quickly. In addition to road works that has been going on for years you’ll find delays, potholes, mist, cattle, nerve grindingly slow trucks and all sorts of other fun things like that. Without a trailer or boat you should be able to make the journey in about seven hours, but if you’re towing a boat it’s another story altogether, taking up to ten hours depending on how many trucks you get stuck behind on the single lane roads. Sure the road isn’t the best in the world, but it’s by no means terrible. Any South African road user would be able to deal with it. And afterwards, when you reach your destination and all the worries of the road dissolve with the first sip of a cold beer on the beach you suddenly realize how glad you are you did it. Afterwards my frustration toward the road turned to something else as I realized that this semi-treacherous road might be one of the main things that have kept Sodwana from turning into another Durban or Cape Town clone. There is something very different about the feeling you get from standing on a beach in Sodwana with no malls or parking attendants or traffic jams or even reliable cell phone reception. You get that feeling of being free from the worries of your daily grind, and isn’t that what going to the coast is all about anyway? After we (and by we I mean our diesel powered Toyota Land Cruiser), had successfully managed to tow Yamaha’s skipper training boat, a Seacat Cc (centre console) all the way up to the coast we met with some fellow students and prepared to get started on the training aspect

of this trip. Now as we’ve mentioned in previous articles, you now need a SAMSA approved skippers license if you’d like to pilot a boat on the water. It’s a fairly new thing for freshwater boaters, but it’s always been the case if you wanted to go out to sea. And let me tell you, this course isn’t as easy to complete as the freshwater one, in addition to practical training on the water students are also required to write a four hour theoretical exam before they can obtain their qualification. To take the students through the practical side of boating on the open ocean (quite obviously the most important part), was Mr. Arthur Moorecraft from Mako Diving and Fishing charters. He has been a part of the Sodwana boating and diving scene for years now and by all accounts knows those waters like the back of his hand. Well, getting up at 06:00 am the next day we prepared to go meet the waves face to face. After a safety briefing we headed to the beach where to our surprise a large number of boats and trailers were already assembled. A fishing competition had been going on for a about a week and the anglers were out in full force since daybreak. And this was mid-May, not really the peak of the holiday season, just proving again how popular and teeming with life these waters still are. It should be remembered that a large part of Sodwana and the beaches surrounding it form part of a protected nature reserve known as the Sodwana Bay National Park which itself falls within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This means you’ll have to go through a checkpoint (and pay) before being able to get on to the beach, and only 4x4 vehicles are allowed. This isn’t a big drawback though as the beaches of Sodwana are the only spot in the entire country where one is still allowed to take vehicles (4x4’s) directly onto the beach these days. Anyway, after a few talks about knots and conduct at sea the first crew was taken out to start their training. After an hour or two on the waves they returned, looking a tad shaken and very wet. Next it was our turn to face the swells and we were more than up for the challenge. After a few sharp words from Arthur our boys managed to get the hang of it and in a few days everyone would be more or less comfortable on the water. But now for a bit more on the heroic bakkie that got us all the way there with almost a ton of boat in tow. Thanks to Hatfield Toyota we were

Previously, the
3.2L DI-DC engine produced 121 kW of power and 373 Nm of torque. Matched to this model year change is a five speed automatic gearbox, INVEC-II with enhanced gear ratios to better suit the engine refinements on the diesel model, making it an even greater tow vehicle. “We are delighted with our Pajero customers who have remained loyal over the years, and we find that we have an extremely high retention rate. Approximately 80 percent of our Pajero sales are existing customers. These customers are discerning buyers and find that the Pajero is a perfect fit for their lifestyle. Customers will now have the benefit of more engine power, improved and better performance off-road capabilities and better towing capacity,” says Suraiya Naidoo, Divisional Manager of Mitsubishi Motors. The Pajero’s history and its ability to rise to the challenge are synonymous with the history and adventurous spirit of Mitsubishi Motors itself. From the searing heat of the equator to the extreme cold of the artic, the Pajero has conquered it all, earning the absolute trust of its owners in widely differing environments of 170 countries throughout the world. The engine in the Pajero 3.2L DI-DC has undergone a number of technological enhancements to achieve the increased power. An improved pump impeller in the water pump and a modified port form in the intake manifold and the opening temperature on the thermostat have been changed. Certain modifications have also taken place on the cylinder head, injectors and turbo-charger. Not only is this new engine quieter than the previous model, it is also both cleaner and more economical giving improved CO2 emissions which are reduced to 245 grams / kilometre. The Pajero is, and has always been, a 4x4 specifically designed to go anywhere, no matter the terrain. The four wheel drive system comprises of the sophisticated Super Select 4WD-II transfer case with both ASTC developed on the bedrock of MMC’s all-wheel-control (AWC) concept and delivering significant improvements in both off-road and on-highway performance. Designed to tackle both heavy-duty rough and smooth roads, to climb, tow and navigate sand, rock, water, mud, highways and even the high street, the rugged yet refined new SWB is powerful, responsive and utterly exhilarating.
Security and safety is paramount to Mitsubishi and the standard fitment of the theft alarm sensors inside the interior light fitting uses a supersonic wave sensor for motion detection inside the vehicle.
A further warning alarm
in this system is the inclination sensor which detects the vehicle inclination angle. For example, if the vehicle is locked and an attempt is made to tow it away, it will sense the angle change and engage the alarm. In the case of the cut-off of power supply and the interruption of communication is detected, the theft alarm siren will automatically operate off the internal battery power supply. For those customers who embody the Mitsubishi Motors ethos of go anywhere, anytime, Mitsubishi Motors has now introduced the Mitsubishi Integrated Communication System (MICS) into this version of the Pajero. The latest GARMAP navigation system is a standard feature across the range of Pajero models, in both the petrol and diesel derivatives. The latest map updates can be downloaded over the internet, saving the customer the added cost of purchasing updates. New Husqvarna Te250, Tc250 And Te310 For 2011
S
wedish firm Husqvarna has launched new versions of its TE250, TE310 and TC250 models. The three bikes receive new reinforced frames, new hubs, new exhaust pipes with heat protectors, waterproof spark plug covers, and crank-case with steel frame sockets. Each model also receives specific changes too. The TC250 is equipped with battery-less fuel injection, new camshaft intake phasing and a new exhaust system ending with an Akrapovic titanium silencer. The TE250 has been given a new air box, a new layout of radiator tubes, a new headlight support, a new 8.5L tank and new hand guards. It also receives a new CDI with two maps selectable from the handlebar (also on the TE310), a new silencer and new suspension settings. The TE310, gets a new engine and a lighter overall weight of 106 kilograms dry. These new bikes will be in dealers from the end of July.
2010 Electric Motorcycle Shootout 64.5kg Ossa Brammo Enertia vs. Native S vs Zero S Tr280i Is The World’s Lightest Trial Bike
R
eborn Spanish brand Ossa has come back with a bang – a sleek-looking new trials machine it says is the lightest in the world.
The 64.5 kilogram bike is the first new Ossa in 25 years and features a 272cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine. Production begins in September, with the entire 1250-bike initial run sold into dealers around the world. A second batch of 2500 will follow next year, by which time a newly-developed upside-down fork will be an option.
W
ho would have thought even three years ago that we’d be comparing three U.S.-manufactured electric street motorcycles priced for popular consumption, and with no less a mission than to change the world? While Zero, Brammo and Native may only sometimes allude to this intent, anyone paying attention to all the rhetoric pouring forth can see this is a goal in which these small startups seriously hope to play a significant role. Accordingly, the Zero S, Brammo Enertia and Native S are part of the gambit by tech sector entrepreneurs wagering that they’ll do for the transportation sector what others among them have already done to transform virtually everything else in this global civilization. The heart of these bikes consists of their aircooled motors, motor controllers, and batteries

with integrated battery management systems (BMS) and on-board charger. Brammo uses a brushless AC motor from the well-regarded manufacturer, Perm. Zero uses a brushed DC motor from the race-winning Agni Motor company, and Native uses an Etek-style brushed DC motor. The Enertia is powered by a 72-volt lithium iron magnesium phosphate battery system that’s made with components sourced from Texas-based Valence. Zero’s founder, and former NASA engineer, Neal Saiki developed a 4.0 kWh, landfill-approved 58-volt lithium-ion manganese battery for his Zero S (and Zero DS). This powerpack is made up of 336 cells, and utilizes 24 large format cells supplied by the Chinese EV power manufacturer, Thundersky. These e-Bikes are set to hit South Africa next year.

Living La Vida Loca In the old days motorcycles were mostly used here as a form of cheaper transport. The average owner was the sort of guy who was going through his apprenticeship or had just started swinging spanners.
T
hese guys would ride the Katana, CBX and Thumper type bikes everyday of the week regardless of rain or shine. And all you have to do is go to a rally
to confirm this as I think you will see some of them still riding the same bikes today! These were and are hardcore bikers, but this demographic has changed with the times. Nowadays peppy scooters are becoming the new commuting choice for the yuppies stuck in office blocks while bigger superbikes and cruisers are the more weekend lifestyle choices. And it is exactly in this lifestyle category that I believe Harley-Davidson motorcycles fit best. You are not going to buy a Harley to dodge the traffic with, you are going to buy a Harley so that you can go out and release a little tension and enjoy yourself on the weekend. Most of the time you will see seriously big and rigged out Ultra Glide tourers leisurely twisting through the country side with a pillion and luggage for the long weekend on board or mean looking dudes on grumpy sounding Fatboys on their way to meet up with their mates. Both are specialist machines so to speak and both are far from cheap. So what if you are an old biker looking to get back on the road or even just a current biker that wants to live the Harley lifestyle? Well Harley have the answer in the recently launched Forty Eight Sportster and we got to ride it in the stunning lake area of Milan in Italy. The low riding bike looks seriously cool with its classic 8.0 litre “peanut” fuel tank, low single seat, under bar mirrors, fat takkies and blacked out and polished 1 200 cc V-Twin engine. With Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) and a broad torque curve, there is more than enough grunt to keep you moving at just about any pace you would want to ride a naked bike. The sound from the standard chrome, staggered shorty dual pipes is also not too bad, but I would opt for a set of aftermarket pipes, as almost every Harley owner does, and take a bit more pleasure in letting our friends in four wheeled transport know that we share the same road. And it just sounds so much cooler when you make a noise on a Harley. The big trick with owning a Harley is that you can spend forever customising your bike, your wardrobe, your bar, your kids, your pets, your… you get the idea. Do yourself a favour; take a trip to the Harley dealer nearest you, and you will see exactly what I mean! And the new Forty Eight has retained that aura of rebellion since the introduction of Sportsters back in 1957. This was a time when the founda-

Staying true to what I think most would use the Forty Eight for, me, minus any pillion, had a blast simply winding up and down to the various lakes that surround Milan at a pace that would not set any new lap records, but still enjoying scratching the odd foot peg when the mood took me. Of course, as I have told you, you can customise this bike to your heart’s content, and it is primarily a one-man machine, but importantly a seat for your better half, foot pegs and backrest are also some of the goodies that you can specify. I was going to add that this would prevent you from having to eat leftovers and sleep on the couch every weekend, but this machine is so easy to ride that your wife or girlfriend could go

This Changes Everything Honda is looking to make some bikers cry, wondering why they don’t have one. I’m talking about the new 2010 VFR1200FD DCT, VT750S and CBF600S. Making a full assault on the road, not taking any prisoners and ready for anything.

Honda’s goal is simple: to make motorcycles easier and more fun to ride. This gearbox delivers the same level of rider enjoyment as a manual transmission but with the flexibility of a fully electronic option for enhanced sport and comfort riding. And Honda certainly made sure you have more than enough power with the VFR1200FD DCT boasting an impressive 127 kW (170 hp) and 129 Nm of torque. Not only is the VFR1200FD DCT a fast and powerful bike, it also has superb handling. It may be a little big compared
With three amazing bikes to test, I got to work. First on my list was of course the new 2010 VFR1200FD DCT. I jumped on looking forward to trying the dual clutch transmission first hand. I started out in automatic with “D” mode selected for maximum fuel efficiency, perfect for effortless dally commuting and saving some trees. The clutch and gear shifts are now electronically controlled by the computer giving me the freedom to concentrate on enjoying the road ahead. Out of experience I know auto gearboxes aren’t always as smooth as you would think. Now imagine trying to fit all that technology into a bike frame. But to my surprise the shifts were perfect with almost no delay and as smooth as a baby’s bottom. But how could this be? The bike changed at the perfect time, every time. But how did Honda achieve this amazing feat? The dual clutch transmission system is controlled by a microcomputer that constantly evaluates rider and motorcycle behaviour and recognises when to change gear. The VFR1200FD’s Dual Clutch Transmission employs dual concentric input shafts (one shaft runs inside the other hollow shaft), an exclusive in-line clutch design, and concentration of hydraulic circuitry beneath the engine cover to achieve a compact design. This was all fine and dandy but what about sport mode?

Something else that I found very useful was the Honda Electronic Steering Damper. It is an electronically controlled hydraulic rotary damper, mounted on the steering head. Damping characteristics are automatically adjusted in response to motorcycle speed and acceleration, for high-speed comfort and low speed manoeuvrability without the rider having to have expert track set-up knowledge to extract the best from his machine on the road or the track. Over the past few years not much has changed on the CBR600RR. It still looks basically the same as the 2007 model, so why buy a 2010 model if you own a 2007 model? Well let’s just say there’s more to it than meets the eye. The first thing you’ll notice is colour scheme changes for the 2010 model. My favourite and surely yours, the black and white camo-style paint job. Which in fact is a woman called Leyla …moaning in delight. Although all of these changes involved the addition of some materials, the overall weight of the 2010 CBR600RR remains the same as the previous model. This was achieved through weight savings in the engine, exhaust, and chassis as it continues to be the lightest bike in the super sport class. Overall the CBR600RR has a natural race feel you can’t help but notice. Twisting the throttle and screaming down the road never felt quite this good. I had the opportunity of taking Leyla for a spin; by the way I’m talking about the bike. After only a couple of meters I could immediately notice how the improved stability comes into play. It felt like all the road imperfection that comes with riding on South African roads disappeared (you still need to avoid the pool sized potholes). That said, riding felt almost effortless, all this weight saving and little changes added up to a pretty smooth ride. And now on to my favourite part, the improved torque. The CBR all ready has a reputation for being a torquey bike with great handling. But the 2010 model takes that to a whole new level.

Not really knowing where I was going, but in the general direction of Kroonstad. The open road proved no challenge for me or this beauty. With such a relaxed riding position. It felt like I could ride for days. Riding faster than I was supposed to, was easy thanks to the great throttle response and mind blowing power that this little 600 cc produces. I had to check my speed often to make sure I was behaving. She kept whispering more, more…. more speed. But being the responsible one I slowed down a little to enjoy the scenery. That lasted a good couple of seconds as I once again twisted the throttle and went blasting into the unknown. I see this bike as the perfect package for the adrenaline junkie or not so average Joe. Tested Yamaha YZ250F & YZ450F
A Lethal Combination Over the last decade a lot has changed, not only in the motorcycle industry but in general. Suddenly it’s cooler to have hundreds of friends on facebook, most of whom you have never met, than actually have real life friends you hang out with.
N
owadays you can send messages from your mobile phone to people all over the world in seconds. It’s too much to keep up with and
may leave you feeling nostalgic, yearning for the past where things seemed much simpler. The good old days where R5 got you a bus ticket, a movie ticket, a box of popcorn and a coke, when coke was still coke. But luckily all this seemingly useless progress for the sake of progress has some benefits. It contributes to much better, more powerful and easier to ride motorbikes. So it’s currently worth mentioning Yamaha’s new YZ250F and YZ450F. Why? You may ask. Well not only do they come from a long and championship winning pedigree. Both are jam packed with revolutionary, cutting edge technology, which enables them to make anybody look like Chad Reed in front of their mates. The 2010 models are more than you could possibly imagine. Revamped looks deliver newgeneration styling and performance. Among other things one of the biggest changes is the new four valve cylinder head which is matched to a fuel injection system developed specifically for the YZ450F. It instantly adapts to changing air/fuel mixtures depending on altitude and temperature, this makes the engine deliver no matter what the conditions are. This making it perfect for not only the race track, but trips into the bush too. Which is exactly what I did, I had the privilege of having both the YZ450F and YZ250F for a weekend of fun. So I called up a friend and he had no hesitation in agreeing and even said he’ll cover the fuel costs. Early the next morning we saddled up and hit the trail. Me on the beastly 450 cc and him on the 250 cc. My house was about 10 kilometres from an offroad spot formerly known as N1 4x4. Luckily there was a little dirt road that we could take which led us straight to the railroad close to our destination. From the first twist of the throttle I could feel that there was definitely some hocus pocus going on under my bum. And I was right; well kind of because the YZ450F features some interesting advancements like the rearwardslanted engine, which allowed engineers to design straight intake and exhaust ports, creating the most direct path for air flow into the fuelinjected engine for incredible performance. It also uses a battery-less fuel injection system with a 12 hole injector for superb fuel atomization. The 44 mm Keihin throttle body is designed for easy starting, with an integrated cold start and idle speed adjustment knob. And Yamaha’s FI provides optimal air/fuel mixtures

All this contributes to a very powerful but smooth and user friendly motocross bike. The YZ450F’s new engine design achieves unmatched mass centralization, concentrating inertial mass toward the center of the machine. This bold new design also swaps traditional intake and exhaust positions, putting the lightweight airbox and throttle body out front. This contributes to mass centralization for nimble handling while also achieving a straight intake tract for superb combustion efficiency that delivers more power. This also minimizes internal friction which contributes to quicker throttle response. The YZ450F also features a new “tornado-style” exhaust header with resonator. This efficiently scavenges exhaust gasses and helps the engine achieve its exceptional low-to-mid range torque characteristics, while the 150 mm longer muffler comfortably meets the latest noise stan-

provides a superb rigidity balance that compliments the engine for unmatched lightweight handling and cornering. The chassis has a very symmetrical design, which promotes nimble handling, letting riders enter and exit corners as quickly as possible to put the competition behind them. The result? days. With disc brakes front and rear I had no trouble stopping for the occasional taxi cutting across the road. Driving through the traffic people couldn’t help but stare as I zipped by. Traffic was almost non-existent and I loved it. I got on the highway looking forward to seeing what this scooter is capable of. I reached 120 km/h, a marker not many scooters can reach but the Vespa wanted more speed. A couple of seconds later I found myself on 145km/h clock speed. As I started braking for the toll gate I was blown away. The Vespa shattered my expectations by a long shot. I knew the Vespa was a great looking scooter. But I never expected it to be so fast and rider-friendly. I pulled out my wallet to pay and a man to the right of me started laughing. He asked me what kind of motor I fitted this scooter with. I simply answered “It’s a Vespa”. The Vespa is in my opinion the Ferrari of the scooter world. It’s a purebred Italian scooter. Not only is it fast, it’s also jam packed with useful futures. The people at Vespa really thought of everything. And that’s what sets this scooter apart. There are a couple of things I found very
