The loneliness is a grave, and the beautiful is asleep in the darkest circumstances, the environment has changed ……home is not home and the walls are not even bearable ……only the imagination fills the place…mending her life …..saving her self from death!! She is not at all alone any more ….yet there is nobody.

2011 Exhibit: My Neighbor

"Protecting the Neighbor" oil on canvas 80x80 cm The neighbor has the right to be protected by his neighbor. The neighbor is always the nearest and fastest support. It is a mutual relationship, characterized by the love, friendship and neighborhood rights. Regardless of sex, color, origin or religion they are all Adam and Eve’s descendants; the Prophet Mohamed had said about a neighbor “Gabriel continued to recommend the neighbor until he almost asked me to consider him a successor”. The painting is in a square shape describing the interdependence between neighbors. In the painting we see two girls; one of them is sheltering behind the other girl and they are holding hands. In the background we see an old man holding a cane and depending on a strong young man by holding his arm. The strength of expression in this painting is its parallelism. “The Greatest Love"

Blue is the color of our pure soul, white is the color of our beautiful hearts and gold is the color of our strong faith. Let's be one as we've always been. It doesn't matter who we are, what we are or where we come from, what really matters is that we all share one great love, the love of GOD.

Behind this mask (Who are you?)" My painting represents my feelings about all religions and my acceptance to them. It is a woman sitting on the globe like the Pharaonic scribe who represents knowledge and culture. The woman has four arms like the Indian goddess (Lakshmi) the goddess of beauty, purity and fertility and who is the favorite goddess of women. One hand is holding a Synagogue while the other is holding a Church. The other hands are holding a Mosque and a Buddhist temple. The woman has an embryo representing Africa. She is wearing a doublefaced mask and Cleopatra’s crown. Above her head there is Atoun, being a mono God. All around the woman are ornaments from all Religions. So if I ask you‌behind this mask (Who are you)? You will be a human being. Exhibit: The Peoples' Egypt since 25 January

FARID FADEL

EGYPT

Described by some people as a true “Renaissance man,” Farid Fadel was born in 1958 in Assuit, Upper Egypt, into a family noted for both its musicians and its doctors. He has since excelled at medicine, art and music, taking all three gifts very seriously. In art, he has held 34 solo exhibitions; in music, he has given several prominent recitals and concerts, and in medicine, he obtained his M.Sc. in Ophthalmology, and is presently working as a practicing eye doctor at the Memorial Institute of Ophthalmology, Giza.

In 1975, on the inauguration of his fifth exhibition, the Egyptian Parliament granted him a trip to Italy to see Renaissance art, which had a strong influence on his style. He has taken part in several group shows, both in Egypt and abroad, such as the People’s Show in Portland, Maine, USA (1982), where he displayed fifteen portraits. His fourteenth solo Exhibition was held at the Egyptian Cultural Center, Mayfair, London, 1989 and his 16th show in the University of Toledo, Ohio, USA. 2011 Exhibit: My Neighbor

The Good Samaritan The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the words “My Neighbor” is the parable of the Good Samaritan. What a story! It is exactly what the world needs today. It’s about an unfortunate man who was brutally attacked by criminals as he travelled alone on the road. Two clergymen passed him by, and did not offer to help, when at last a most unlikely man became his life-saver. Although a Samaritan was a natural enemy to a Jew, he did not hesitate to clean the beaten-up man’s wounds, carry him to a hotel, pay for his stay and promise to come back to ensure his well being. This painting is inspired by a moment of great danger. Angry clouds announce an impending storm, while two birds of prey are looking for a dinner made of human flesh. There is nowhere to go in this arid desert, with one bare tree and rough ground with actual rusty nails and foot-bruising sharp stones. My neighbour is the one close-at-heart not close-at-hand. In times of trouble it is the compassion not physical proximity that counts.

My Neighbor 80x80

The main idea of my art focuses on two branches: The first is the mix between Islamic art and Coptic art. I choose many elements of from each tradition….like an angel, mosque, bird, lion, hands, church…to come together to form a perfect unit. The second is the mix between several styles and techniques like paintings, wood relief, metal, gold paper….

Strolling along the streets of Heliopolis one can nowadays notice many mosques and churches of different faith standing peacefully together in the immediate vicinity given a good example how "East and West" can blend together. The history of the suburb of Heliopolis started at the turn of last century when the Egyptian Government sold five thousand acres of desert land to the Belgian industrialist, Baron Edouard Empain, who erected the suburb of Heliopolis in a neo-Moorish style. It all began with a basilica and a mosque in close neighbourhood built at the towns centre.

EGYPT

Maher Ali is an Egyptian artist. He was born in Alexandria but his family left there for Cairo when he was young and settled in Tura where he currently lives with my wife, Eman, and two children, Amr and Nour. His father was a source of support and encouragement by taking Maher with him to look at the surrounding villages and downtown Cairo and Alexandria. It was at this time that he felt the beginnings of a desire to be an artist. After leaving High School he studied privately. Firstly, with Mohammad Abbaza who showed me the techniques of pyrography (wood burn) painting, and then in Zamalek with artists, Fragali, Mustafa al Razzaz and Mohamad Allam where he learned about various styles of art. Between 1991-93 he studied silk screen printing techniques in Syria. When he returned to Egypt he worked and studied in the studio of Kwame Brian in Maadi. MOHAMED ABLA

EGYPT

Renowned Egyptian artist Mohamed Abla, winner of the prize at the 1998 Cairo Biennale and of many prestigious awards in Egypt and abroad, is a man of curious character and many faces. Born in Mansoura, Egypt, he graduated at the top of his class in 1977 from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Alexandria. Upon graduation he took part in Egypt’s “Young Artists Exhibition,” winning the grand prize. He then spent 7 years traveling around Europe, painting and studying. As a young artist he was almost detached from his indigenous ties, reluctant to settle in one place. Germany was definitely a turning point in his life. Finding one gallery owner, he showed his work and was transported to elation by the owner’s enthusiastic response. “He saw my sketches, loved them, bought them and asked if I would put on an exhibition.” Six more exhibitions followed in the next two years. His continuous traveling, has given him a broad exposure to the international art scene, and has resulted in him studying, teaching and exhibiting in galleries around the world. Abla says that he has an internal feeling that art is the key to bringing cultural and environmental awareness to people. He has an intense desire for expressing feeling through his paintings. Both you and I live in the same building, covered by the same sky and gathered by the same land We breathe one air ... and face the same fate. It does not matter who lives in the first floor and who lives on the last one. What it matters is to work together so the building stays standing firm facing the winds.

The Three Farmers oil on wood

It is impossible to live alone without neighbors. The relationship between them should be lovely and peaceful. This painting expresses my view of “my neighbour”. The Egyptian woman farmers, who are neighbors, come together to go to the river to fill their water jugs. On their way they walk through the grass and plant, playing together…representing the love that have for each other.

REDA ABDEL RAHMAN

EGYPT Born in Ismalia, Egypt and having studied at the University of Minya at the College of Fine Arts, being surrounded by outstanding Pharonic monuments and Coptic monasteries left a lasting impression on Reda Abdel Rahman, one of Egypt’s leading contemporary artists. It has resulted in his artistic expression focusing on the relationship between what he regards as his ancient Egyptian heritage and the demands of contemporary life.

One of the key focal points in his work is that happiness, indeed “a good life,” are intricately related to what is grown and gleaned from the fields of Egypt and the Nile valley, and hence serves as a reoccurring theme in his art. Reda’s work draws strength from the nurturing Nile which serves as a source for his creativity. Also, unlike much of contemporary Arab art, Reda has been seen as ground-breaking in that he draws and presents to us the naked or semi-naked female figure in his pictures, believing profoundly that women are central to the well-being of the family which is a commonly held value in Egyptian society. Through Reda’s work we see the combination of Pharaonic and decorative motifs. He draws a direct relationship to the hieroglyphs that the ancients left behind. Taking this further and incorporating the ancient traditions, he has designed many mosaics that decorate many cities throughout Egypt. Indeed, his work can take on monumental proportions, whether it is large canvases or murals, depicting scenes that are of old yet at the same time new. More recently he has powerfully focused on the Egyptian revolutionary events of January 2011. Not only has Reda enjoyed a prolific and international career in the Arts but he has also encouraged others by participating in a number of varied initiatives designed to promote artists and the Egyptian art scene. In this regard, he has been integral to the formation of internationally recognized events such as the Luxor Painting Symposium and the formation of the annual Aswan Sculpture Symposium. He has also led the Fustat workshops in Old Cairo that brings together a range of artists from around the Middle East. Reda also established an art magazine and curates a gallery in downtown Cairo, both of which are titled Portrait. His artistic career has taken him around the world, from Latin America to Europe.

When I was invited to the first exhibition to be held in the church, I was thinking at the time of the theme of the acceptance of others. This time I thought about what happens in Egypt. Common people throughout our history were Egyptian, whether Christian or Muslim, side by side in every crisis. I wish to move closer to understanding the reasons it is no longer this way, and address this issues in practical ways, like through this art festival.

2011 I enjoy manipulating shapes, patterns, space, and especially colors in the visual expression of subjects that intrigue me. Frequently, I choose to break up the picture’s plane. This technique emphasizes the abstract qualities of the design rather than focusing on a literal interpretation of the subject.

My Neighbor

My interpretation of the Caravan theme My Neighbor: East and West is inspired by a quote from Khalil Gibran. “Your neighbor is your other self, dwelling behind a wall. In understanding, all walls shall fall down. Who knows but that your neighbor is your better self, wearing another body? See that you love him as you would love yourself.” -- Khalil Gibran, from his book Jesus, Son of Man The compositional vertical divisions represent the walls of separateness that we must eliminate to know our neighbors. The abstract figures convey three different stages: remaining apart and isolated, moving past confining walls, and finally coming together to meet each other. The circle symbolizes the inclusion of all mankind as neighbors.

CATH BARNES

WALES

Cath Barnes has been influenced by the cultures she has lived and worked among, she has combined this with the more traditional European approaches to Art which she received in her Western training as an artist. She worked for many years with textiles as a medium. However, more recently, she has focused on painting. Her passion for colour is a common element to both. Prior to moving to Egypt, she lived in China, Indonesia, and Malaysia. She has work in private collections around the world. China had a big influence on her work, this can be seen less so in the themed work of this exhibition, although it is evident in the use of Chinese gold temple paper (meant as an offering to our dead ancestors). Her work embraces elements of East and West. Although she is from the West, she feels she belongs in the Far East.

2011 I have a fascination with the Boulak market area of Cairo on many levels. My strongest interest concerns the colour to be found there which is a delight as I find that in Cairo I miss the vibrancy of colour to be found in Asia. I have a love of flowers which I often paint, some of the amazing, extravert, structural dresses to seen hanging in the streets of Boulak remind me of huge colourful blossoms hanging on dismal dull buildings, I enjoy the juxtaposition. These dresses fascinate me because they are clearly influenced by western style and are to be worn at wedding parties. I find it sad that the same women who cover up in the shapeless dark clothes as in “Boulak Market 2 where the vendor is dressed in such a way, should not be able to express their extravert, joyful side by what they have to wear day to day. Everything about these wild colourful dresses make me smile.

Return to a Cairo of happiness, pride, and expectation oil on canvas As a single female expatriate experiencing the revolution I felt fear, dread and a lack of safety, I was one of many who left the country in the middle of it only to watch closely from afar what amazing results ensued. My piece of work is a response to what I saw on my return which was a huge national pride, great happiness and a tangible feeling of looking to a bright future. Seeing so many young people cleaning the streets, painting the curb stones and tidying their community up made a big impression, this is represented in the painting. Bastet as the life-preserving goddess of joy and protector of women seemed very fitting and she appeared in my sketchbook. The lotus flower symbolises Egypt and the sun makes me happy as well as being a huge element of ancient Egyptian culture. I hope Egypt sees the results of the revolution in a bright and peaceful future for all. 65

My Neighbor hand-colored lithograph

My piece is a hand-colored lithograph (one of a kind). When planning my work, I considered the relationships and needs that we share as neighbors on the earth; the most basic are food, clothing and shelter. The figures are centered in the abundance of the earth’s gifts. I also thought of our Christian and Muslim shared roots as children of Abraham; thus the stars of three faiths in the sky. I drew the figures with hands outstretched in shared work and respect for the resources given to us by God.

Julia Morgan-Leamon is a painter and video installation artist from the USA. Her work examines gestures of figures as they move through time and space. She asks what happens when one moves from a safe and familiar place into the strange and unfamiliar? Is there a conceptual boundary that is crossed, or a chasm that is bridged? To practice respect and tolerance for difference in peoples, religions, neighborhoods, and countries is to cross boundaries. Learning another’s language and practicing writing the strange letters of another’s alphabet over and over is a gesture of reaching beyond the familiar.

The hand and its belief in protection seemed particularly relevant for me to use in the painting as it is recognized and understood in many cultures, regardless of religion and language. I like to use words in my paintings. The words chosen for this painting express how we share symbolic things across cultures. The feeling of love has no boundaries, and is something felt by all humans, regardless of religion, culture or race.

Exhibit: My Neighbor Beach Ball Mixed Media Wall Sculpture

In the context of living in Assala village I am a Western female living mostly among Middle Eastern males, so have interpreted the theme ‘My Neighbour’ as the Other, using the Taoist symbols of Yin and Yang to convey the balance of opposites. In this famous symbol white represents male, black represents female and at the centre of black there is a core of white, as within white exists black. Female represents the Orient, male the Occident so as the opposites continue to crossover it becomes confusing which side we are on. I have used beach ball bats to symbolize that relationship is a game which is much more fun if you keep the ball in the air and nobody wins. The female component offers a flower from her centre which attracts the ‘male gaze’ or is it the West voyeuristically viewing the East as a commodity.

2011 Exhibit: My Neighbor

Landing Soon Mixed Media on Canvas 60x60 cm The painting I have submitted, titled Landing Soon, is in the theme of "Neighbors". It is a story of opening our consciousness and hearts not only to our neighbors in this physical realm with its enormous diversity, but also to the myriad of possibilities in the realms and dimensions unseen. Landing Soon is depicting a dawn of a new age where we become Galactic as well as Earthly. With this expansion, my wish is that we truly connect to Christ consciousness on a whole new and deeper level in compassion and love. Exhibit: The Peoples' Egypt Since 25 January

It Takes a Village to Raise a Child I feel it is so important as a message. We are everyone’s children and every one is our child. I was inspired to this thought one day at the toll office when bringing my art to Egypt. It was hot and my shirt had slipped a little out of my jeans and an old Egyptian woman just simply came and stuffed it back into my pants. I felt how sweet. She really viewed me as her daughter. I thought with this feeling there is no doubt a society can be responsible for each other with love and encouragement. When I made my New Dawn Exhibition my prayer for the world and for Egypt was that each and every one of us connect to what values are near. What do we want as a common thread. From Love, Romance, Children, a Home, the time and safety to dream. The simple things in life. Change happens within first. 81

Exhibit: My Neighbor

Exhibit: The Peoples' Egypt Since 25 January

An East-West dialogue portrayed as a conversation between neighbours over cups of tea. The view through the arched window aims to capture the warmth and energy of life on the balconies in the busy neighbourhood. Developed from everyday observations, the lights from the apartments glow as dusk draws in, some are finishing domestic chores, others taking in the view. The arch represents harmony and unity and the pattern around it combines stars and crosses.

MARIELLE VAN DER WOUDE

NETHERLANDS

Being born and brought up in The Netherlands I have been exposed to different cultures living together. My grandfather opened my eyes to see the world beyond mine by taking me to great museums: to learn about great art-masters, beauty of creation, history and diversity of societies. From a young age my talent for art was recognized, but instead of the art academy circumstances took me to the academy of life. God has given me my talent as a seed, my grandfather formed a beautiful flowerpot and Egypt is like fertile soil providing opportunities for my talent to grow and start to blossom.

NEIL CROUCH

CANADA

I am in my 5th year teaching Ceramics, Sculpture and Graphics/Printmaking at CAC. Most of my other 34 years teaching were in the Comox Valley, B.C., except for 3 years in the Canadian Forces School in Germany from 1988 – 91. I am blessed to be married for 39 years to Mary Jean and be the father of 2 girls and 2 boys aged 26 to 34. I have loved drawing and painting since my own Elementary school days, but I like a lot of other endeavors too (sport, house design/construction, piano) so have found that the art I do with my students mostly satisfies my need. Perhaps someday I will become an artist.

Barad chai Misri clay

Barad chai Misri It is our 5th year here and my wife and I have never been in a more welcoming, ‘meet-onthe-street-friendly’ country than Egypt. Behind doors and inside apartment entries we hardly know anyone but as I cycle around Ma’adi (now in the 100’s of times) and into Tourah, Basatien, rural Giza and beyond, I am met everywhere with “Hello – where you from? Welcome to Egypt!” This ‘Barad chai Misri’ is a tribute to all those people. The small ‘Pyramid-with-a-twist’ on top is a nod to the power of the past in today’s society.

My neighbour does not merely mean one of the church or faith to which I belong, it has no reference to race, colour or class distinction. My neighbour is every person on earth who needs my help. My neighbour is every soul who is wounded or bruised by adversity. My neighbour is everyone who is a “child of God, a God who wants to develop in me, the attributes of compassion, tenderness and love for my neighbour. The World is My Neighbor

Exhibit: My Neighbor My Neighbors --Diptych Oil on canvas Landscape has always been important to me. The return journey from school was through the flat lands of The Fens, East Anglia, England, which allowed me to stare in awe at the beauty of sunsets. To be later inspired by the paintings of Claude Lorraine, Reuben, Constable, Turner and Rothko, I have decided to use their inspiration to create the landscapes of “My Neighbours. Here in Egypt I attempt to show the contrast between City and Countryside of my immediate neighbours and the beauty of their surroundings.

SILVIA DAVIES

GERMANY

I was born in Germany and have travelled extensively worldwide. My first experience of photography was when I picked up my grandfathers SLR camera in a young age. I enjoyed experimenting with images, controlling light and depicting movement. The hardest bit was always the wait for the photos to be developed and in my hands! After completing studies of different aspects in photography which gave me a further insight into how I could create the images I wanted people to see. Cairo is a perfect place for me because on every corner there is something of interest. Most of my photo shoots turn into an experience, from sitting on a donkey cart to invitations for falafel and tea.

Around the corner photograph framed-57x70 cm

Around the corner I met this man when I was walking around an affluent area of Maadi. I was struck by the man's nobility, despite his poor surroundings and lack of material possessions. The interwoven nature of wealth and poverty is something which interests me as an outsider living in Egypt. I have mirrored this in the crisp fabrics beside the weather-beaten face of this old man. The image begs the question of how we would view the world if we were in similar circumstances and if fate had dealt this man a better hand, what would he look like to the outside world?
