Compliance carbon market signals opportunities and risks Australia’s peak body for carbon market professionals welcomes the passage of the Clean Energy legislation and the resultant creation of Australia’s compliance carbon market. “It’s here, it’s law and it’s time to get on with it,” says Carbon Market Institute executive director Mike Tournier. The introduction of carbon pricing provides signals to both investors and traders along with the legislative framework for compliance risk management decisions. In Australia, the compliance market will present many challenges and opportunities and CMI will be helping businesses achieve their obligations. “CMI is launching a series of practical guides to advise business how to manage the risks and realise the identified opportunities,” says Tournier. The credibility of the carbon market in Australia depends greatly on design rules that create efficient, fair and orderly transactions, so ensuring the regulations that underpin the Clean Energy legislation are world’s best practice is vital. “As people often say, the devil is in the detail, and we look forward to reviewing the draft regulations when they are released and working with our members to effectively meet their compliance obligations.” ends
