Behind the Sequined Sweater The sweater featured on the cover is a truly special find. It is in fact a vintage find, found by the founder of Carbon, Hilary Pendleton. After acquiring this garment from a lucky trip to Buffalo Exchange, she knew she wanted to feature this colorful garment on the cover of Carbon’s December/ January 2011 issue. Sequins are all the rage this season and are the perfect choice for a holiday party. Showing up as mini dresses from all our favorite stores; Forever 21, Nasty Gal, ModCloth… you name it- a modern version of the featured sweater is easy to find. Don’t be afraid to go bold with sequins. You’ll sparkle and shine and light up the night while decked out in this funloving textile.

Right: Founder of Carbon Magazine, Hilary Pendleton, spotted sporting the sparkling sequined sweater at the Project Ethos event at Scottsdale’s the Mint Lounge by AZcentral.com’s style photographer.
What we can further emphasize about this sweater is the importance of vintage shopping. You never know when you’ll find something dazzling and one-of-a-kind. Trends are always cycling around and something that may have been odd a few years ago, may be on point for the current season. The important thing is to make the item modern by adding a personal twist. In the photo to the right, Pendleton has paired the sweater with a bodycon dress and suede wedges. Her satin clutch finishes of the palette of colors and textiles well. So go bold this holiday season and adorn yourself fabulously. FASHION
Winter weather is working its way through our woven sweaters, awaking goose bumps from their summer hibernation. The best way to combat the freezing of our nose and toes is to bundle up with an authentic fur jacket. Fur has the unique ability to not only warm you up, but also to keep you warm as it traps in your body heat, creating your own personal sauna. Not only that, but fur coats have been a fashionable way to warm up not just in one particular era, but throughout the ages. The stunning sophistication of a fur coat will never go out of style making it truly a fashion for the ages. However, fur coats can be both expensive and controversial. With the popularity of vegetarianism and the advancement of animal protection laws, real fur is something that can be hard to come by. Many stores now offer up faux fur coats, but they don't offer quite the same warmth as authentic fur. So what's a cold and classy lady to do? Hit up your local thrift store. Oftentimes if you search hard enough you can find some quality fur coats for greatly discounted prices at places like Goodwill and The Salvation Army. Make sure to check for things like stains, because a fur coat is too delicate to just be thrown into the wash. Pair one with a pair of pearls and a Manhattan and let your coat transport you decades into the past while keeping you as warm as a summer's day.

can I have the brightest lips of them all?
Mirror
It’s the holidays and your days are now filled with parties and with that are full of wonderful hugs and kisses. For this season, what girl doesn’t want to glam up with a bright lip color? However lets face it, most of us are never brave enough to wear a super bright lip weary that it may rub off all over the place like a champagne glass, or a friends cheek. However, here are a few suggestions on how to make your lipstick last all night! First, formulation is everything matte shades are the best finish for a long lasting pout. The three we recommend are Revlon’s Really Red, M.AC.’s Ruby Woo and Illamasqua’s Encounter. To apply, you’ll need a small lip brush with a bit of curve to it. Using the brush, swipe just a small amount of lipstick onto it and begin working the color into the lips. Be sure to follow your natural lip shape. The lipstick should start to feel more like a stain.

BEAUTY
Take a step back and examine your lip shape to see if maybe one side is higher than the other or arched differently. Take a lip pencil or lip marker of a matching color and gently buff little strokes around your mouth. Alternate using the marker and your brush to smooth out the line. After you’ve done so, blot with a bit of tissue. You’ll notice that not much is coming off because the color is worked into the lip like a stain. Proceed to do one more layer with a brush. If you think the end result is too intense, just dab your finger over your lips to make it less extreme. Before you know it, you ought to have a kiss proof, drink proof red lip. For the rest of the face we recommend keeping the eye makeup neutral with a hint of blush to keep you looking fresh. By Ariana Parra

Wrap Star be a present wrapping wizard with creative gift wrap.
An eco-friendly and budget-friendly solution to expensive and waste-worthy wrapping paper is to use materials that you already own around the house to wrap gifts. For box presents, try using old magazine paper. Magazines often have eye catching graphics and ads that produce beautiful and unique wrapping. Magazine paper is also generally a better paper quality than traditional wrapping paper. You’ll find that it is easier to work with and will make for a smooth and clean finish. Finish off your magazine-wrapped gift with an old shoelace bow. You know you were throwing away those old sneakers anyways. For bag presents, try using a shopping bag from one of your favorite boutiques. Use a bag that can stand on its own, like the paper one shown. For tissue paper, use a plastic shopping bag. First, cut into two halves so that you have two large rectangles. Cut off the handles of each side and put aside for later. Take one half of the bag and wrap your gift in it and place in the bag. Take the other half and fold hamburger style. Begin to cut diagonal slits in the bag along the non -folded side. Take the bag and place into your sturdy shopping bag as you would do with tissue paper. Finish off the gift by tying the handles of the paper bag with one of the cut handles of the plastic bag. If you want to be extra fancy, cut a triangle into the edges of the makeshift plastic bow.

one hot gift
Cocoa is not only the perfect company on a cold day; it also makes a great gift. To create a cocoa care package, first think of the person who will be receiving the gift. Ask yourself if they fit into any of the following categories: chocoholics, mintmaniacs or traditionalists. Once you have pinpointed their flavor preference, you can begin to personalize their gift. For the chocoholics, I suggest giving them a cocoa mix made from dark chocolate, and for extra oomph, include chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate pieces in their cocoa package. For the mint-maniac, the perfect complements to hot cocoa are: candy canes, mint syrup or Andes mint candies. And, of course, the traditionalists should be given marshmallows and whipped cream. The extra toppings can be given in their original packaging or can be transferred into decorative canisters (but please, don’t try and transfer the whipped cream). After you have selected the toppings, move on to choosing the actual cocoa mix; this can be anything from Nestle to Ghirardelli. Next transfer the mix into a decorative canister. Finally, hand write or type the directions from the original cocoa packets and using ribbon attach them to the cocoa canister… you don’t want your friend to be left wondering what’s inside! For another personalized touch, include a monogrammed mug in the cocoa gift set. Finally, wrap the items you have chosen and voila! you a personalized cocoa care package. By Rachel Knebelsberger

Seasonal Chic
It's that time of year again; the time where Christmas tree sweaters, cornucopia earrings and other holiday accessories flood people's wardrobes. I love the holidays and encourage holiday enthusiasm‌ when it's done tastefully. The key to updating your wardrobe is to dress for the season, not a particular holiday. Here are several easy ways to remain seasonally chic and avoid holiday over kill: 1. Be selective: if you have a favorite holiday accessory you insist on wearing, make it the focus of your outfit. Carbon Tip: turn your holiday brooch or pin into a necklace by simply adding a chain! 2. Incorporate jewel tones: jewel tones are an easy way to make an outfit festive without going overboard. Think fuchsia, emerald, and sapphire. 3. Play with texture: heavier textures such as fur, velvet and satin are perfect for fall/winter and will enhance any ensemble 4. Accessorize creatively: avoid being literal by choosing accessories that hint at the holiday. Golden leaf earrings could be the perfect touch! By Rachel Knebelsberger

must have
Winter time is all about feeling warm and cozy during the holiday season. There are a few things that I can't live without in the winter as well as some new things I think are must-haves for this year. My winter must-haves starts with the sweater dress! Sweater dresses are the dress of the season! They are so comfortable and functional for cold weather. My favorite sweater dress find is at Urban Outfitters, but there are also many other options found at H&M and Forever 21.The next thing every girl needs in the winter is a pair of black opaque tights. They can make your outfit a little more classy while still doing the job of keeping you warm. You want to make sure they are actually opaque which means when you put them on you can't see your skin through them. Black opaque tights are the perfect accessory for a fun holiday dress! If you want to make a statement this winter go for the faux fur. Its warm and makes a bold statement. Who does fur better than the Kardashians? Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe just released their Kardashian Kollection at Sears with a beautiful faux fur vest
in their line. Forever 21 also has a faux fur vest that is just as classy! Pair the vest with jeans for a casual look or dress it up with a dress! Boots, boots and more boots! From classic Uggs to high heels, boots are essential for the winter! I love my Uggs around the house. When it comes time for a night out I choose ankle booties. They're comfortable and stylish! Uggs can be a bit pricey but you can find similar styles at Target. You can always find amazing styles and prices at Forever 21 as well! I love my red accents in the winter! Pick up some OPI A Oui Bit of Red nail polish and some Nars Mascate Pure Matte lipstick to finish the look! You'll be ready for a night on the town, a holiday party, or a fun date night with that special someone! Last, but certainly not least would be mood music! Grab the new She&Him Christmas album. Play it for your own cozying up by the fire or for background music at your fabulous party! Zooey Deschanel has the perfect voice to put you in good spirits! Pick one up today and throw a fabulous holiday party that no one will forget!

Designer Spotlight:
There’s a new girl in town, she’s edgy, bad ass and has some serious style. She’s the type of girl that shops at Dirty Monroe, one of the web’s up and coming T-shirt lines. Founded by Shavona Powell and Imani Sharrieff, these two ladies have emerged into the fashion industry with their unique taste and forward -thinking ideas. Their objective is “effortless fashion” and strive for versatility and difference– something that they have certainly achieved with Dirty Monroe.
22 CARBON|Dec/Jan
What are Carbon’s thoughts on Dirty Monroe? If you couldn’t tell from the glowing intro on the opposite page… we love it! Of course their shirts are edgy, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Their line is something we haven’t seen before and that’s why we like it so much. Not only do they offer interesting and thought-provoking graphics, these shirts come in a variety of colors and cuts, which is what keeps Dirty Monroe’s T-shirts different and new. Our favorite shirt is clad with the text, “Money, Clothes, Boys” across the chest. We think that sums up a girl’s favorite three things. When paired with leather skinnies and denim jacket as pictured, she depicts the exact mantra of Dirty Monroe,
effortless fashion.
We’re hoping that Dirty Monroe will continue to produce quality T-shirts for years to come. To support this brand, purchase their items at www.shopdirtymonroe.com. You can also keep up with their blog at dirtymonroe.tumblr.com! By Hilary Pendleton
