HISTORY
In the footsteps of the The London–Sydney Marathon of 1968. Driving 35.000 kilometres across the globe from the most south western major city all the way to the capital of the UK
In the realm of adventure, the latest endeavour stands as the pinnacle of a decade’s worth of experience and planning. Dubbed “the most extreme challenge to date”, this venture aims to traverse the longest distance ever attempted in such a format. Spanning approximately 33,000 kilometres, the journey from Sydney to London is not just a test of endurance but a monumental tribute to the spirit of exploration.
Structured as a quartet, the challenge unfolds in four segments, each lasting around four weeks. This meticulously designed format allows participants to experience the journey in phases, with a three-week break interposed between each stage. During these intervals, the logistics team undertakes the task of transporting vehicles to the next starting point, ensuring that both machines and humans are ready for the next leg of this unparalleled journey.
The Sydney to London route is more than a mere distance to be covered; it represents a synthesis of the knowledge, skill, and spirit accumulated over ten years of adventure. This expedition is not just about reaching a destination but about connecting continents and cultures, pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and embodying the essence of exploration in its most pure and exhilarating form.

ABOUT CAR CHAL LEN GE
For fifteen years, CarChallenge has been at the forefront of designing auto tours that blend driving, adventure and luxury into an unparalleled global experience available throughout the year.
At the heart of a Challenge lies the quest for unique routes that push the boundaries of creativity and ingenuity. These are not just drives; they are carefully curated adventures designed to test one’s resourcefulness and to immerse participants in the unparalleled beauty of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes. It’s about more than just the challenge; it’s about the boundless joy of encountering rare cultures and accessing locales far beyond the reach of the average tourist.
Since its inception in 2007, CarChallenge has orchestrated over fifty events across every continent, crafting itineraries that read like a globetrotter’s dream. From Amsterdam to Singapore, Mumbai to Tokyo, Anchorage to Panama, Perth to Sydney, Dar es Salaam to Cape Town, and back from Cape Town to Amsterdam, these are but a few examples of the myriad journeys that have captivated the hearts of adventurers. Each Challenge is a testament to the spirit of adventure that drives us to explore the furthest corners of the planet, not just as tourists, but as pioneers of the open road.
Each participating team navigates the journey independently, allowing for a personal exploration of the terrain with the assurance of reuniting with fellow travelers and the organisation at designated hotels each night.
Navigation is streamlined and user-friendly; routes are pre-loaded onto smartphones or tablets using specialized apps for offline maps, ensuring participants can always pinpoint their location without needing to stay in a pack. This approach fosters a sense of personal adventure while maintaining a connection to the group.
Accommodations and dining experiences vary widely across continents— from the modest hotels in Indonesia to the more luxurious stays in Bangkok, reflecting the diverse cultures and economies encountered along the way. While group dinners are not a nightly requirement, the organizers recommend and vet certain local restaurants outside the hotels, offering participants the chance to explore local cuisines on their own or in smaller groups.
The journey is segmented into stages with varying driving distances, all prechecked by the organisation for safety and feasibility. Despite the independence afforded to each driver, a communal spirit often prevails, with many choosing to drive together for companionship and shared experiences.
Each day ends with a briefing, “The Day of Tomorrow”, a gathering that discusses the itinerary, offers insights into the next day’s route, and addresses any concerns. This daily checkpoint reinforces the communal aspect of the Challenge, ensuring everyone is prepared and informed for the adventures that lie ahead.
SYDNEY TO LONDON
PART 1
Sydney to Darwin
PROGRESS OF THE CHALLENGE:
DARWIN
Our adventure commences in Sydney, Australia's sprawling metropolis, from where we set our compass Northwest. The route takes us through locales such as Eumundi, Hervey Bay, and Mt. Isa, with a special detour across Fraser Island. Here, we're greeted by pristine sandy beaches, marking our first foray into the natural wonders that lie ahead.
As we traverse the vast Australian outback and we make our way more inland. We visit Uluru and we make a stop in Katherine before our initial leg concludes in Darwin. After reaching Darwin, we pause for three weeks, allowing time for our vehicles to be shipped across the Timor Sea, setting the stage for the next phase of our journey.
SYDNEY
PART 2
Timor to Medan
PROGRESS OF THE CHALLENGE:
50%
Dili to Medan: Across Timor and Beyond Landing in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, introduces us to a nation with a tumultuous history, gaining independence from Portugal in 1975 only to face immediate challenges. However, since achieving official independence from Indonesia in the early 2000s, Timor-Leste has been on a path of economic and political progress. From Dili, our expedition becomes more rugged, leading us through Timor into Indonesia, and onto the city of Kupang.
The journey intensifies as we embark on the longest ferry crossing of our trip to Ende on Sumbawa, an experience that’s as raw as it is memorable, with simple beds and benches for rest. Alternatively, participants may choose to fly to Ende. Our path then takes us to Labuan Bajo, a key location near the Komodo Islands, where we enjoy rest days filled with exploration and tranquility.
As we sail to West Nusa Tenggara, we’re treated to breathtaking stages through lush jungles and special accommodations,
notably in Lombok. Less touristy than Bali, its highlight is Mount Rinjani, the region’s tallest peak. Our passage continues to Bali, a unique blend of Hindu culture, stunning beaches, and traditional Balinese dance, with a restful stop in Ubud.
The adventure presses on to Java, Indonesia’s bustling island, where we marvel at Mount Bromo, explore Yogyakarta, and take in the Borobudur Temple, one of Asia’s most significant archaeological sites. Our final Indonesian island, Sumatra, presents us with untouched rainforests and the chance to encounter orangutans in their natural habitat, a fitting end to this segment of our journey in Medan, before pausing once more to prepare for the next chapter starting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
PART 3
Kuala Lumpur to Mumbai
Our journey begins in the pulsating heart of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. From the cosmopolitan streets of the capital, we venture through the lush, verdant landscapes of the Cameron Highlands, making our way towards the island of Penang. Crossing into Thailand, our path leads us to Krabi, where a luxurious hotel stay promises a well-deserved day of relaxation. Here, we temporarily exchange our cars for the elegance of a catamaran, embracing the serenity of the sea.
As we journey up Thailand’s east coast, Bangkok beckons with its vibrant allure, offering us a day and an evening to soak in its dynamic spirit before we step into the rich historical tapestry of Cambodia. In Siem Reap, a rest day is dedicated to exploring the majestic Angkor Wat, a testament to the country’s ancient architectural prowess.
Our route meanders along both rugged and paved roads, following the Mekong River upstream to Phnom Penh. Cambodia’s capital grants us two days of reflection at The Killing Fields, a poignant reminder of the country’s turbulent past under the Khmer Rouge, situated just outside the city.
Heading north once again, we trace the Mekong into Laos, where the challenging terrain calls for the prowess of a 4x4. The ancient city of Champasak reveals itself, with the UNESCO-listed Wat Phu Temple, a marvel of 5th-century architecture, standing as a silent witness to centuries of trade and tradition. The Bolaven Plateau, with its breathtaking landscapes, marks another highlight of our passage through Laos.
Re-entering Thailand, the journey takes a northern turn, unveiling the beauty of Sukhothai, Chiang Rai, and Chiang Mai. Here, amidst the backdrop of historical sites and vibrant city life, we pause to gather our spirits for the next leg of our adventure: China.
The drive into China introduces a bureaucratic odyssey, navigating through paperwork to witness the majestic Himalayas unfold before us. Climbing towards the “roof of the world,” we pass through Shangri-La, Dali, and Lhasa, cities that speak of Tibet’s mystique and splendor.
From China, our journey dips southward, yet the Himalayas remain our constant companion. Gazing upon Mount Everest, we navigate the rustic border into Nepal, arriving in Kathmandu. The ensuing days weave through Nepal and India, exploring Rajasthan before concluding this leg of the challenge in Mumbai, marking the end of an epic third chapter.
This segment of the Sydney to London Challenge encapsulates the essence of exploration—a narrative that stretches across cultures, landscapes, and histories, inviting you to be part of a story that spans continents and conjures a sense of adventure like no other.
PART 4
Muscat to London
After a brief respite, our journey resumes with the vehicles shipped across the Arabian Sea, poised for collection at a magnificent hotel in Muscat, Oman’s gleaming white capital. From here, the Sydney to London Challenge embarks through the shifting landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula, beginning with Oman’s rugged terrains before venturing into the expansive deserts of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. As we navigate through this region, the scenery transitions from the mountainous to the desert, introducing us to Al Hofuf and steering us south towards Riyadh, where volcanic rock and greener vistas dominate the landscape.
Saudi Arabia offers an enchanting pause at Al Ula, a place rich in historical treasures and exceptional accommodations, marking our final interaction with this diverse country. Jordan awaits next, with our initial encounter being the mesmerizing desert landscape of Wadi Rum. Amidst its red rock formations and sand dunes, we find a splendid accommodation, albeit without internet, offering a stark contrast to the digital world.
Jordan’s allure is undeniable, with Petra as its crown jewel. Carved by the Nabataeans, Petra is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders, where we rightfully pause to marvel at its ancient beauty.
Our route may then lead us to Israel, contingent on the situation. Jerusalem, one of the world’s oldest cities, beckons with its ancient buildings and sacred sites, including the Old City, the Western Wall, Temple Mount, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Our passage through Israel concludes in Haifa, from where the vehicles are shipped to Mersin, Turkey, as we fly over the Mediterranean to reunite with them.
In southern Turkey, the adventure intensifies with unpaved roads, steep inclines, and river beds marking our passage. Cities like Konya dot our route, but it’s the blend of rugged and smooth paths that defines this leg. Istanbul then provides a well-deserved break, signifying the end of our Asian adventures as we pivot towards Europe.
The journey’s final chapters unfold in the Balkans, exploring the lesser-known terrains of Serbia and Croatia, leading us towards the concluding stretch of the Sydney to London Challenge. Finally, we cross the channel, arriving in London, the terminus of an extraordinary expedition that weaves together continents, cultures, and landscapes into a singular tapestry of adventure.
For this challenge, the vehicle of choice is a robust 4x4—think Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Discovery, or Toyota Hilux. Essential features include ample ground clearance, underbody protection, and durable All-Terrain tires to navigate diverse landscapes with ease and assurance. To complement this, we provide technical support throughout, with a singular goal: ensuring every participant reaches the finish line.
However, the essence of the Challenge transcends mere driving. It’s about curating an experience that balances thrilling driving stages with ample opportunities for cultural immersions, excursions, and relaxation. Our itinerary includes carefully selected excursions deemed memorable from our inspection trips, offering participants unique, unforgettable experiences.
Navigation is made effortless through pre-loaded routes on tablets provided by us, enabling participants to explore at their own pace without the necessity of moving in a convoy. This freedom extends to evening arrangements as well; while communal dinners are an option, participants are equally welcome to dine independently, with recommendations provided for major stops. Moreover, the cost of dining, whether at our recommended spots or within the hotel, is covered by us.

Our years of experience have honed our understanding of what modifications are essential for such a demanding route. Necessary adjustments include the right wheels and tires for durability and traction, increased ground clearance for navigating uneven terrains, and underbody protection to shield against the rigors of off-road travel. On the more luxurious end, features like an in-car coffee maker represent the "nice-to-have" enhancements that can make the journey more enjoyable, though they fall into the category of not compulsory but beneficial.
For participants who have yet to purchase a vehicle for the Challenge, we offer our expertise and guidance. Drawing on our extensive experience, we advise on both the selection of the appropriate 4x4 and the requisite modifications to ensure that it is perfectly equipped for the journey ahead. This encompasses both the "necessary" modifications for safety and performance, and the "nice-to-have" features for comfort and convenience, ensuring that every participant is well-prepared for the adventure that awaits.
PARTICIPATING, AND THEN
In the lead-up to the grand Sydney to London Challenge, participants have the unique opportunity to dive deeper into the adventure that awaits through specially organized evenings in both Europe and Australia. These gatherings are designed not just as informational sessions but as social hubs where adventurers can connect, sharing anticipation and excitement for the journey ahead.
For those unable to attend in person, accessibility is a priority, and each event will be recorded. This ensures that every participant, regardless of their schedule or location, has access to the wealth of information shared about the journey from Sydney to London, as well as the chance to feel a part of the community of fellow travelers before the adventure even begins.
