What is Heart Transplantation?  When heart disease is advanced, patients no longer improve with only medications. This is called Heart Failure and heart becomes weak.  This may be due to decreased blood supply to heart (coronary artery disease) or advanced valve problems. Then the only solution to such patients is Heart Transplantation.  Heart Transplantation (replacement of a damaged heart with a normally functioning heart) is done when heart function is severely decreased and it is expected that patient will not live long with ongoing treatment.  Heart Transplantation - where in the weak heart is removed and replaced by a healthy heart from another brain dead donor.

Who Needs Heart Transplantation?  The heart is the hardest working muscle in the human body. Located almost in the center of the chest, the adult human heart is about the size of one’s fist.  At an average rate of 80 times a minute, the heart beats about 115,000 times in one day or 42 million times in a year.  During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 3 billion times, pumping an amount of blood that equals about 1 million barrels. Even when a person is at rest, the heart is continuously at work.  Heart Transplantation is a major heart surgery. It is considered for a patient with heart disease only when there is no other option to make him/her live longer with quality life and without it person is unlikely to live longer than a few months.
